Principal’s Corner:Tips for Teaching Kids to Be Thankful
Help your family learn the true meaning of Thanksgiving with these ideas from Care.com
Play the gratitude game. Lennay Chapman, author of Secrets to a Rockin’ Life has created a game for the family to play together called “The Gratitude Game.” The game needs only three or more players and a timekeeper. Have everyone sit in a circle with one person starting of saying, “I am grateful for (fill in the blank).” That person has five seconds to come up with something for which they are thankful. As soon as the first person finishes, the person to the left goes. The key is to say what you are grateful for without repeating and without pausing for more than 5 seconds.
Get creative with a Thankfulness Jar. Create a “Thankfulness Jar” or basket or bin for the family, which the kids could decorate. Place a notepad and a pencil next to the jar and leave it there so that during the days before Thanksgiving family members can write (or draw) things for which they are thankful whether big or small. During your Thanksgiving dinner you can share them.
Create Thankful Turkeys. These can be the old-fashioned “hand turkey” or something more elaborate. Write things for which you are thankful on the turkey’s feathers. Create more feathers if the first ones get full.
Have children participate in “giving back.” Giving time, energy or needed supplies to others in need helps teach kids to appreciate what they have. As a family collect for the food drive, volunteer to rake leaves for a neighbor, or visit a nursing home. Think about each member of the family. Have the children show gratitude to each person at the Thanksgiving table. Draw them pictures, or set place cards on which children draw or write special things they appreciate about each person there. They can also show gratitude for everyone’s special contribution to the meal as well.
Thankfulness is not something that is only practiced on Thanksgiving. Find ways to teach your children to practice gratitude for all of their blessings all year long, and let them know how much and in what ways you are grateful for them. This is a great topic for dinner conversation year round.

KSDK Weather Academy: Tracy Hinson from KSDK came to give the first and second graders a presentation on weather today.

Happening at St. Ambrose:As part of the Adopt a Cow Program, Erin McGraw from the Dairy council paid Ms. Seaton’s Pre-K 4 class a visit. She read a story and talked to us more about dairy products and our cow, Flower.

Congratulations to PREK3, PREK4, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Grade on exceeding their goals and winning a treat for the Sept/OCt contest. The treat this time will be Gus's Pretzels on Nov 26th.

Secret Santa Shop:The 8th grade is hosting Breakfast with Santa on Sunday December 8, 2019. We are looking for items to be donated for our Secret Santa Shop.Secret Santa shop items can be anything from knick-knacks, coffee mugs, candles, puzzles, costume jewelry, etc. Anything that could be a gift for the children to buy for very little money and wrapped up for their family and friends for Christmas. Items sold in the shop are priced at $0.50, $1 and $3. Some larger items may be $5.Deadline for donations is Tuesday, Nov 26.
