THE HOLY EUCHARIST WITH HEALING Twenty sixth after Pentecost November 18, 2018 10:30 am WE WELCOME YOU TO THE EPISCOPAL CHURCH OF THE REDEEMER, BETHESDA, MARYLAND. If you are visiting today, do join us afterwards for refreshments downstairs. During the liturgy, we use the two books found in your pew or seat rack: The Book of Common Prayer (1979) and The Hymnal 1982. Generally we stand to sing, but we sit for the offertory and communion hymns. ‘S’ numbers refer to music for the set parts of the service, and these are found in the front half of the Hymnal. We sit for the readings from scripture, the Old Testament Reading, Psalm and ‘Epistle’ (from the New Testament). We stand for the Gospel reading, and turn to face the Book and its reader to elevate Christ’s word and example. We also stand for the Creed, and say together all text set in bold type. Communion is a spiritual and visual expression of our communal life together in Christ. Everyone is welcome to receive communion or a blessing at the Lord’s Table. The text of our liturgy is taken from two sources: ‘The Holy Eucharist: Rite 2, Eucharistic Prayer C’ from The Book of Common Prayer © 1979 The Episcopal Church, and, ‘Eucharistic Liturgy: Thanksgiving for Creation and Redemption’ from A New Zealand Prayer Book, He Karakia Mihinare o Aotearoa, © 1989, The Anglican Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia, on-line update 2014. Both Prayer Books, from the Anglican Communion, have at their root the 1549 Book of Common Prayer, the first comprehensive prayer book to be written in English, by Thomas Cranmer, Archbishop of Canterbury of the Church of England, ‘to the end that the congregation may be thereby edified.’ (BCP, p.866). The Bible translation that we use is the New Revised Standard Version, which is based on the original Hebrew and Greek scriptures. Every third Sunday of the month we offer healing prayers and laying on of hands at the altar of St. Luke the Physician. If you wish to have someone pray for you, someone you love, or for the world, make your way to the healing ministers during communion.

THE FIRST READING 1 Samuel 1:4-20

On the day when Elkanah sacrificed, he would give portions to his wife Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters; but to Hannah he gave a double portion, because he loved her, though the LORD had closed her womb. Her rival used to provoke her severely, to irritate her, because the LORD had closed her womb. So it went on year by year; as often as she went up to the house of the LORD, she used to provoke her. Therefore Hannah wept and would not eat. Her husband Elkanah said to her, “Hannah, why do you weep? Why do you not eat? Why is your heart sad? Am I not more to you than ten sons?”

After they had eaten and drunk at Shiloh, Hannah rose and presented herself before the LORD. Now Eli the priest was sitting on the seat beside the doorpost of the temple of the LORD. She was deeply distressed and prayed to the LORD, and wept bitterly. She made this vow: “O LORD of hosts, if only you will look on the misery of your servant, and remember me, and not forget your servant, but will give to your servant a male child, then I will set him before you as a nazirite until the day of his death. He shall drink neither wine nor intoxicants, and no razor shall touch his head.” As she continued praying before the LORD, Eli observed her mouth. Hannah was praying silently; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard; therefore Eli thought she was drunk. So Eli said to her, “How long will you make a drunken spectacle of yourself? Put away your wine.” But Hannah answered, “No, my lord, I am a woman deeply troubled; I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but I have been pouring out my soul before the LORD. Do not regard your servant as a worthless woman, for I have been speaking out of my great anxiety and vexation all this time.” Then Eli answered, “Go in peace; the God of Israel grant the petition you have made to him.” And she said, “Let your servant find favor in your sight.” Then the woman went to her quarters, ate and drank with her husband, and her countenance was sad no longer. They rose early in the morning and worshiped before the LORD; then they went back to their house at Ramah. Elkanah knew his wife Hannah, and the LORD remembered her. In due time Hannah conceived and bore a son. She named him Samuel, for she said, “I have asked him of the LORD.” Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.

THE RESPONSE—1 Samuel 2:1-10 sung by the choir Frederick William Wadeley (1882 - 1970)

Cantor: Hannah prayed and said, Choir: “My heart exults in the LORD; my strength is exalted in my God. “There is no Holy One like the LORD, no one besides you; there is no Rock like our God. Talk no more so very proudly, let not arrogance come from your mouth; for the LORD is a God of knowledge, and by him actions are weighed. The bows of the mighty are broken, but the feeble gird on strength. Those who were full have hired themselves out for bread, but those who were hungry are fat with spoil. The barren has borne seven, but she who has many children is forlorn. The LORD kills and brings to life; he brings down to Sheol and raises up. The LORD makes poor and makes rich; he brings low, he also exalts. He raises up the poor from the dust; he lifts the needy from the ash heap, to make them sit with princes and inherit a seat of honor. For the pillars of the earth are the LORD's, and on them he has set the world. “He will guard the feet of his faithful ones, but the wicked shall be cut off in darkness; for not by might does one prevail. The LORD! His adversaries shall be shattered; the Most High will thunder in heaven. The LORD will judge the ends of the earth; he will give strength to his king, and exalt the power of his anointed.”

 THE EPISTLE Hebrews 10:11-25

Every priest stands day after day at his service, offering again and again the same sacrifices that can never take away sins. But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, “he sat down at the right hand of God,” and since then has been waiting “until his enemies would be made a footstool for his feet.” For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are sanctified. And the Holy Spirit also testifies to us, for after saying, “This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says the Lord: I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds,” he also adds, “I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more.” Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin. Therefore, my friends, since we have confidence to enter the sanctuary by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain (that is, through his flesh), and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us approach with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast to the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who has promised is faithful. And let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching. Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.

all turn to face the Gospel book Gospeller The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. People Glory to you, Lord Christ. As Jesus came out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him, “Look, Teacher, what large stones and what large buildings!” Then Jesus asked him, “Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone will be left here upon another; all will be thrown down.” When he was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked him privately, “Tell us, when will this be, and what will be the sign that all these things are about to be accomplished?” Then Jesus began to say to them, “Beware that no one leads you astray. Many will come in my name and say, ‘I am he!’ and they will lead many astray. When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed; this must take place, but the end is still to come. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there will be earthquakes in various places; there will be famines. This is but the beginning of the birthpangs.” Gospeller The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ.

THE NICENE CREED BCP, p. 358

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE A New Zealand Prayer Book all kneel or remain standing

Caring God, we thank you for your gifts in creation: for our world, the heavens tell of your glory; for our land, its beauty and its resources, for the rich heritage we enjoy.

We pray: for those who make decisions about the resources of the earth, that we may use your gifts responsibly; for those who work on the land and sea, in city and in industry, that all may enjoy the fruits of their labors and marvel at your creation; for artists, scientists and visionaries, that through their work we may see creation afresh. Silence We thank you for giving us life; for all who enrich our experience.

We pray: for all who through their own actions or the actions of others are deprived of fullness of life, for prisoners, refugees, and those who are sick; for those in politics, medical science, social and relief work, and for your Church, for all who seek to bring life to others.

Silence

We thank you that you have called us to celebrate your creation, give us reverence for life in your world. We remember those who have died. Father, into your hands we commend them.

People Amen. CONFESSION OF SIN Celebrant Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

Silence may be kept. People Most merciful God,

we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

God of all power, Ruler of the Universe, you are worthy of glory and praise. Glory to you for ever and ever. At your command all things came to be: the vast expanse of interstellar space, galaxies, suns, the planets in their courses, and this fragile earth, our island home. By your will they were created and have their being. From the primal elements you brought forth the human race, and blessed us with memory, reason, and skill. You made us the rulers of creation. But we turned against you, and betrayed your trust; and we turned against one another. Have mercy, Lord, for we are sinners in your sight. Again and again, you called us to return. Through prophets and sages you revealed your righteous Law. And in the fullness of time you sent your only Son, born of a woman, to fulfill your Law, to open for us the way of freedom and peace. By his blood, he reconciled us. By his wounds, we are healed. And therefore we praise you, joining with the heavenly chorus, with prophets, apostles, and martyrs, and with all those in every generation who have looked to you in hope, to proclaim with them your glory, in their unending hymn:

SANCTUS & BENEDICTUS—S 130 Deutsche Messe, D.872 Franz Schubert (1797-1828)

And so, Father, we who have been redeemed by him, and made a new people by water and the Spirit, now bring before you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ our Lord. On the night he was betrayed he took bread, said the blessing, broke the bread, and gave it to his friends, and said, "Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me." After supper, he took the cup of wine, gave thanks, and said, "Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me."

Remembering now his work of redemption, and offering to you this sacrifice of thanksgiving, We celebrate his death and resurrection, as we await the day of his coming. Lord God of our ancestors; God of Abraham and Sarah; Isaac and Rebekah; Jacob, Leah and Rachel; God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ: Open our eyes to see your hand at work in the world about us. Deliver us from the presumption of coming to this Table for solace only, and not for strength; for pardon only, and not for renewal. Let the grace of this Holy Communion make us one body, one spirit in Christ, that we may worthily serve the world in his name. Risen Lord, be known to us in the breaking of the Bread. Accept these prayers and praises, Father, through Jesus Christ our great High Priest, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, your Church gives honor, glory, and worship, from generation to generation. AMEN.

As our Savior Christ has taught us, we now pray,

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen.

or with these words

The Body of Christ, the bread of heaven. [Amen.] The Blood of Christ, the cup of salvation. [Amen.] MUSIC DURING COMMUNION AND HEALING MINISTRY sung by all

Founded in 1940 in a small village in eastern France, Taizé is an ecumenical monastic community whose prayer, three times each day, is at the center of their life together. Today, Taizé is

a place to which visitors of all ages and backgrounds come on pilgrimage, to participate in international meetings of prayer and reflection.

In the Taizé tradition, single verse hymns are sung, in repetition, a dozen or so times over the course of several minutes. During the repetitions, the music (and the singer) are gradually released from the

shackles of the printed page, and the melodies may then be freely adapted, improvised upon or reharmonized, as the Spirit takes us—similar in many respects to the freeing nature of jazz.

You are invited to sing or hum the melodies in any language, or to simply listen and reflect.

Adult Forum—We are joined today by John Mendes, the Executive Director of Bethesda Cares. Redeemer contributes a dinner for the homeless of Bethesda every other month and collects clothing, gloves, hats, etc. John will discuss the workings of Bethesda Cares.

There will be no forum on Thanksgiving weekend, so the next forum will be Chuyoung showing us something about Advent Music.

December 16 will be a question: What if Advent was 7 weeks long?

The Choir is still riding high on the success of the Durufle requiem service and the incredible

standing-room audience. Thank you to everyone who made this service possible. Believe it or not, the season isn't half over yet! Please mark your calendars for Advent Lessons & Carols by Candlelight, December 9th at 5pm. Don't forget to invite your friends. Word of mouth is the best promotion: it's personal and free! Because it is a liturgy, the lessons and carols service is open to all. A free-will offering will be taken.

Be sure to get a seat for the Music at Redeemer events in February and March:

Saturday, February 2, at 5pm - EYA: St. Brigid, the Second Patron Saint of Ireland

Saturday, February 9, at 7pm - The Whiffenpoofs in Concert

Saturday, March 2, at 7pm - Erik and Chuyoung Suter, Rachmaninoff & Grieg Piano Concertos

Tickets for these concerts are available at Eventbright, which is accessible through the musicatredeemer.org website.

Bethesda Cares is our local support center for homeless adults in our town.

They are asking for donations of new or clean, lightly used clothing for both men and women as follows:

Hats, gloves, scarves, socks, jackets, sweatshirts, and blankets are always welcome.

We have a tote beside the piano in the Parish Hall where donations can be dropped off. Church volunteers will take them to the Bethesda Cares center in downtown Bethesda.

We need 2 more volunteers to help to deliver these throughout the winter season.

Look for THE GIVING TREE as we get closer to Christmas!

Barbara Thackray

Redeemer Book Group

The next book we will be reading is "A Gentleman in Moscow" by Amor Towles. When in 1922, the thirty-year old Count Rostov is deemed unrepentant aristocrat by a Bolshevik tribunal, he is sentenced to house arrest in the Metropol, a grand hotel across the street from the Kremlin. Rostov must now live in an attic room while some of the most tumultuous decades in Russian history are unfolding outside the hotel's doors. The book will be discussed on January 13 at 3:00 pm at the house of Ann Hartman, 107 Hesketh Street, Bethesda, Md. 20815. For questions, contact Huda Kraske at [email protected].

The books we will be reading next are: The Killers of the Flower Moon by David Grann and Pale Blue Ink in a Lady's Hand by Franz Werfel.
