Forming the ‘Wild Bunch’By A. Nadine Pickthorn

Back in the early 1980s, I was looking or a way togenerate additional income to help support our amilyarming operation. I decided to try my hand at paintingwildlie.  My success, in large part, was due to the support Ireceived rom my buyers in Glasgow and the surroundingcommunities. As a much younger, beginning artist, Ineeded the encouragement that came with those salesto pursue my artwork.  Afer thirty-two years o arming between Fort

Peck and Nashua, we sold our arm and moved tosouthwestern Montana. Te art lovers o the Glasgowarea had been consistent in purchasing my work orall those years. I wanted them to know how much thatwas appreciated. Tereore, I created the Glasgow “WildBunch” Art Show.

Tis is an annual event in which I participate, exhibiting my artwork. I also invite about a dozenadditional artists to show their creations to my riendsand collectors in the area. It has become a reuniono sorts and a way or me to bring the people o

northeastern Montana an event eaturing exceptionaartists and art. I will never orget where I came rom, norwill I orget all o those who helped me along the way. Iam grateul to an awesome, loving God who brought usall together. Tereore, I extend a huge “Tank You” toall my supporters in northeastern Montana. You knowwho you are!

Yet another one of Nadine Pickthorn’s stunning works

of art utilizing a piece of sandstone as her canvas. The

Wild Bunch Art Show will be held at the CottonwoodInn in Glasgow, November 20-22.

Somehow we have orgotten that hunting todayis about being outdoors, perhaps companionship, enjoying nature.  Tere are some in the hunting raternity that

believe going a season without bringing anything homeis a disaster. Really? When did that law pass? And whatgovernor signed it?  It’s okay to smile and shake your head whensomeone asks, did you get your elk?  Look, most o us are not going to find a cure orcancer, bat cleanup or a major league baseball team orwalk on Mars. So why not enjoy the little victories lieoffers.  Victories like hunting with a good riend.  Like seeing the sunset gleam on a silent, snow-

covered prairie.  Like teaching a youngster the sae, ethical way tohunt.  Let’s not be corny here – oh orget it, here’s corn:  When I was much (much!) younger and ready tosolve all the world’s ills, a relative told me there’s nothingwrong with settling down and just being a good citizen.  ranserring that sentiment to hunting, it’s greatto take home a huge bull elk or trophy mule deer. Butwhat’s wrong with spending the day taking your gun

or a walk?  Every hunting season, the stories that make thenews are shoot-outs at elk herds, trespassing huntersand landowners with closed gates. Unortunately, thosestories are taken up as gospel by non-hunters. Believeme, I’ve heard them.  Call me naïve, but I’m convinced those actionsrepresent the minority o hunters. Te vast majority are just good citizens, doing the right thing and enjoyingthemselves.  Hunting is leisure time, not a competitive sport,

    Montana Tales & Trails

Remember: Hunting is Fundespite those big buck contests you sometimes see inother states.  o quote the over-quoted Aldo Leopold, ather omodern wildlie management: “Te man who cannotenjoy his leisure is ignorant, though his degrees exhaustthe alphabet, and the man who does enjoy his leisure isto some extent educated, though he has never seen theinside o a school.”

Modern hunting or most is not about subsistenceliving. It’s been proven time and again that the moneyspent on hunting, to include everything such as gunsammunition, clothing, our-wheel-drive pickups, couldeasily be spent on ood at the grocery store.  Hunting today is a hobby. It’s fine to be seriouseven passionate, about your hobby, just remember ahobby is a gamble. It can result in a reezer ull o gameor not, but either way it’s time well spent, one o lie’slittle victories.  O course the opposite o lie’s little victories are

lie’s little mistakes.  Like having a big buck walk up on you, then spookand run off when you turn around to see what the noise is  Like realizing you brought the wrong ammunitionafer you got up beore dawn, drove two hours, andwalked up a mountain.  Like finding the elk you shot in a deep ravine andknowing you are going to have a long day o dragginguphill.  Mistakes happen, it’s human.

      More important, it’s hunting.

Many times over the years, I’ve been asked, “Howare you able to build a business selling art in such aremote region o Montana?”  I respond, “You cannot imagine the wealth otalented artists living in that part o our state.”

Tis very interesting situation has created someo the most sophisticated art buyers I have ever met.Tey are not impressed by ame or swayed by someoneelse’s opinion o the artwork. Teir past exposure toabulous art enables them to confidently judge artworkor themselves. In other words, they know what theylike and they have seen enough to recognize excellentquality.  Tereore, at an art show in the area, a beginningartist can be as successul as a well-seasoned one.Tis creates an exciting event or the artists, as you

never know when you may make your best sale ever.It certainly could happen at the Glasgow “Wild Bunch”Art Show. Many o my most successul shows over thepast thirty-some years have occurred there.
