What shall I return to the Lordfor all his goodness to me?

    (Psalm 116: 12 )

This weekend we hear the famous parable of the talents, and it is notable that

the Master expects every servant, whether they were given five coins or onlyone, to give him some return on his money. The parable is principally aboutusing our abilities in Gods service - something I wrote about in the bulletinlast week. But I know that many Pastors will use this Sundays readings to talkabout the financial aspect of stewardship.

Saint Charles is a very unusual parish. It has a very small territory because, asthe original cathedral, it was designed to be an administrative center; and inturn that means it is numerically small. Yet this tiny parish, by far the smallestin the Orlando area, has huge responsibilities. We have three Catholic schoolson our campus and try to serve all of them as best we can. We provideCatholic chaplaincy services to the largest single hospital in Central Florida -Florida Hospital South. And, at a time when many parishes have cut back on

their help to the poor, we continue to run the Brothers Keeper thrift shopand Food Pantry which has recently been serving over 800 families permonth. Like a big family we have learned to live frugally. The parish now hasfewer staff members than when I came three years ago, and we are constantlygrateful to the generosity of volunteers with their time and talents. Even so,we need the gift of treasure, the money you offer regularly in the collection,to support the many ministries of the parish and help us to serve more peopleand serve them better, and so in my homilies this weekend I will ask each oneof you to commit yourselves to supporting the work of God in this parish ofSaint Charles. When we give in church its a sign of gratitude to God for hisgenerosity, above all in sending his only Son to die for us; its also a pledge ofour partnership with God in building his kingdom.

A priest must practice what he preaches, so it has been my habit tocontribute to the offertory in all the churches in which I have served and likemany of you I have found that sacrificial giving to the Lord has brought morepeace than anxiety. I would ask you to join me in taking time to think, prayand plan how much you will give in the coming year. Many parishioners usethe biblical tithe (one tenth of their income) as their guideline, giving 5% tothe parish, 1% to the Diocesan Appeal, and the other 4% for their Alive inChrist pledge, special collections, Catholic school tuition or favoritecommunity charities. Most people give their main contribution weeklythrough the envelopes, which allows us to keep a record of yourcontributions so we can provide you with a tax deduction letter. Some of youhave been parishioners for many years, some are new; some have aconsiderable income, some have less. I know all of us have been affected bythe recession, but todays Gospel asks us all to do our best. Please make thethings of God a priority and play your part. Trust in God, for He is neveroutdone in generosity. With your help, from the beginning of the newliturgical year in two weeks, we will support the parish according to theprinciples of stewardship and my hope is that we will be able to serve Godas He deserves. Remember: this is not just about keeping the parish afloat butabout gratitude to the Lord for his many gifts. God bless you all.

Each of you must give as you have made up your mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

    Healing the painof abortionone weekend

    at a time.

Rachels VineyardRachels VineyardRachels VineyardPostPostPost---Abortion RetreatAbortion RetreatAbortion Retreat

November 18-20, 2011at San Pedro Center, Winter Park

If you have been affected by abortion and neehealing, community and the love of God, thretreat is for you. This confidential retreat offea safe, non-judgmental environment whewomen and men find healing and reconciliatiofor the painful experience of abortion.

For more information or to register, please contact Karen at321-662-5097 [email protected]

Abortion is not the quick fix that society would have us believe. Thereare lingering effects that continue years after the abortion wasperformed. Studies show that 42% of women with a history ofabortion had experienced major depression in the last four years(Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, 2006). Women whohave had abortions are about four times more likely to abuse drugs andalcohol as those who carried their pregnancy to term. (CanadianJournal of Psychiatry, April 2010), Women who have had an abortionface a 248% greater risk of suicide, accidental death, or homicide inthe following year. (European Journal of Public Health, 2005).

The Rachels Vineyard RetreatRachels Vineyard RetreatRachels Vineyard RetreatRachels Vineyard Retreatprogram is a response to this pain andsuffering. Rachel's Vineyard has a number of powerful exercises which

allow the soul to speak its grief and sorrow. The exercises help toconnect participants to their inner voice, to each other, and to thelove and compassion of God. The retreat exercises help participants toforgive themselves and to forgive others. There is also an opportunityto re-connect with the children that have been aborted on a spirituallevel, to give them honor and dignity through many special andcreative spiritual exercises as well as in a memorial service.

It was simply beautiful and well worth the time spent in healingthrough scripture and meditation and talking. Each of the peopleinvolved with presenting were truly Representatives of Christ.

I hope there comes a day when this retreat is not needed. That the world comes to believe in life.
