NOVEMBER 10TH, 2019 THIRTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME THE RESURRECTION OF THE DEAD WAS KNOWN TO OUR JEWISH ANCESTORS,

`

My Dear Parish Family, My favorite Catholic apologist,

social commentator and author, G. K.

Chesterton once wrote that “Courage is

almost a contradiction in terms. It

means a strong desire to live taking the

form of readiness to die.” Veterans

Day is the day established to

commemorate the Armistice that was

signed to end the First World War.

When he announced this national observance, President

Woodrow Wilson proclaimed that the day “should be

filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died

in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory."

As time went on, however, Veterans Day became the

occasion “to honor and thank all military personnel who

served the United States in all wars, particularly living

veterans.” And rightly so. It is good, therefore, that we

come together as Catholics ... not only to “honor and

thank” our veterans but also to lift them up to Almighty

God in grateful prayer for their service and their sacrifice.

As we do that, I am mindful of the words of President

John Fitzgerald Kennedy some 50 years ago. Kennedy,

himself a veteran and a Catholic, when speaking of his

brothers and sisters who wore the uniform remarked,

“As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that

the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live

by them.” It was President Kennedy who placed before

our country and the world in his inaugural address this

reminder of the price of the freedoms for which our

veterans fought. Noting that the “rights of man come not

from the generosity of the state but from the hand of

God,” Kennedy cautioned, "Let every nation know,

whether it wishes us well or ill... that we shall pay any

price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any

friend, oppose any foe, to assure the survival and the

success of liberty."
