There has been an overwhelmingly positive response to the introduction of Living Choice Home Care on the Central Coast, since the first information sessions were held at Alloura Waters, Broadwater Court and Deepwater Court.

The exciting new service for eligible Central Coast residents marked an

important milestone for Living Choice, which hopes to roll out the program to other villages over time.

Spearheaded by Tim Bentley, General Manager NSW Central Coast and QLD, the service means that Living Choice residents will be able to access a range of tailored services designed to give them the necessary support to live as independently as possible, rather than having to seek support from outside Home Care Providers.

“The value proposition we have rolled out will be hard for any Provider to beat – 50% more hours delivered than the national average for the same dollar amount, lower administration and case management fees than the national average and no contract termination fee,” says Tim.

Living Choice has appointed Keri Davison, who is providing Case Management services for Living Choice Home Care clients. Her role is to co-ordinate the introduction of the new services and to assist interested residents in accessing Government subsidised Home Care Packages for those eligible.

Keri, who is based at the new Living Choice building at 79 Avoca Drive, Kincumber, has a deep understanding of the aged care sector having worked as both a Clinical Supervisor and in Case Management for over 15 years.

“As at 31st October, I have already received 85 expressions of interest and have conducted 35 assessments. The residents are ecstatic as the services we are providing will greatly enhance their lifestyle,” she said.

Living Choice Home Care has collaborated with McArthur, Australia’s leading provider of Home Care recruitment, and is committed to providing the highest quality of Home Care staff. Living Choice is also currently employing Personal Care Assistants to augment the McArthur care staff.

“It’s a lifestyle choice.” This phrase has taken on more meaning in recent months following the barrage of adverse media publicity about retirement villages. Much of the criticism has been focused on the cost of leaving a village and the “poor return on one’s financial investment”, a simplistic view which ignores the residents’ investment in their lifestyle, security, safety and care.

A new report released by Lois Towart of the University of Technology Sydney shows that

retirement village costs should be measured much more broadly. The report found that while the ownership costs of a house in the suburbs may be lower, the real savings come from the health and lifestyle services included in village life.

Living Choice villages offer a wide range of facilities and services for residents, including swimming pools, bowling greens, movie theatres, gymnasiums, libraries, GP clinics, emergency response, social outings, regular activities and much more. If you were living in the outside community and paying for these separately, you would be paying a lot more for these services than if you were living in a village.

The report also highlighted that retirement villages provide other intangible benefits, including an increased feeling of security. Previous research has also proven that village residents enjoy better physical and mental health, plus social connectedness, than similarly-aged people living at home.

Recently, we filmed three new television commercials in QLD, featuring testimonials by residents. They were totally unscripted and it was particularly gratifying to hear why these residents chose Living Choice and how they perceive the benefits of retirement village living. A great lifestyle and access to care, support and numerous facilities were common themes and it would be difficult to put a price tag on these benefits.

In this issue, we highlight a number of recent events that showcase our residents’ lifestyle, including the enormously successful NSW Spring Fair – turn to pages 6 and 7 to see the photos.

In other news, we are making progress with obtaining approvals for the proposed village at Flagstaff Hill Golf Club, Stage 3 at Glenhaven and have submitted a new Development Approval application for Galston. We have also opened our smart new Central Coast Sales Centre on Avoca Drive, adjacent to Broadwater Court. We would not be making these investments if we weren’t convinced that retirees will still be embracing the lifestyle benefits of retirement village living in the future. There are exciting times ahead!

Kind regards

Graham Hobbs and Ian Tregoning, Directors Living Choice Australia Ltd

4 CHOICE LIVING 5 CHOICE LIVING

The opening of Estia Health Twin Waters, a magnificent 114-bed aged care residence adjacent to Living Choice Twin Waters, marks the culmination of a dream by Living Choice directors, Graham Hobbs and Ian Tregoning. The directors set the wheels in motion nearly five years ago, sacrificing 23 villas to ensure the village residents could enjoy all the benefits of co-located care.

Mr Hobbs said he had been motivated to seek an aged care operator because some residents had expressed concern

that if they or their partner required a greater level of care, they would have to live remotely from the village. “Having Estia’s co-located aged care residence has alleviated this concern and residents from both our Twin Waters and Kawana Island villages have priority access, subject to the usual assessment criteria.”

Mr Hobbs said it was well-accepted that retirement villages which had co-located aged care were in greater demand, resulting in higher resale values, and this would further benefit residents.

Prior to opening, residents from both Twin Waters and Kawana Island were invited to exclusive tours of the impressive facility. They were impressed with the fabulous coastal themed decor and excellent facilities, including the many dining rooms where meals, prepared on-site by qualified chefs, are served daily. Many also expressed an interest in becoming volunteers at the home.

Several Living Choice residents have already moved into Estia and some have also taken advantage of the excellent respite services.

Although Estia Health owns and operates the facility, Living Choice’s construction division was engaged to build it.

Living Choice Glenhaven has a stunning new neighbour, Arcare Glenhaven. Living Choice residents were treated to a VIP preview one day before the keenly anticipated aged care residence opened its doors to the general public.

The lavishly appointed residence has certainly changed Glenhaven residents’ perception of an “aged care facility”.

From the magnificent lobby with its striking chandelier to the spacious ensuite rooms and elegant lounge areas and dining rooms, the attention to detail was evident. However, residents were also impressed with Arcare’s innovative relationship-focused approach which strives to encourage respectful and consistent relationships with its residents.

Arcare Glenhaven manager, Stephanie Lau, said dedicated staff would work regular shifts with the same small group of residents every time they came to work. “This commitment to continuity fosters trust and friendship between residents, staff and families.”

Living Choice Regional Manager, Gail Eyres, said being co-located with such a high quality aged care residence further enhanced the appeal of Living Choice Glenhaven as the ideal retirement choice for discerning retirees.

“Our residents enjoy an active, independent lifestyle now but should they need a higher level of care in the future, it’s comforting to know they can have priority access to Arcare Glenhaven, subject to the normal assessment criteria. Our residents can also enjoy barista-made coffee at the on-site cafe and can become involved as volunteers.”

More than 470 residents from Living Choice’s five NSW villages signed up for the NSW Spring Fair held at the Davistown RSL & Bowls Club on 3rd November. It was a day of fun, camaraderie, friendly rivalry but, most of all, it demonstrated the wonderful lifestyle and community spirit enjoyed by residents.

Organised by National Operations Manager, Christine Osgood, Accounts/Administration

Assistant, Leanne Maini and an army of resident helpers, the activities included bowls, a champagne coin toss, horse shoe chucking, quoits, disc bowls, rummikub, euchre, trio-ominos, washer tossing, golf

putting, bingo, trivia, speed dating, bash the rat, bocce, 8 Ball, colouring-in plus displays of amazing art, photography, craft and woodwork.

Broadwater Court Head Gardener, Josh Montague, was a huge hit as the MC and town crier and the music students from Kincumber High School also provided wonderful entertainment throughout the day.

Fabulous prizes were sponsored by Harvey Norman Commercial, John Hull Electrical, Galley Kitchens, Barry Smith Garage Doors, GJC Electrical, Crainy’s Carpets, Kincumber Glass, Jenkins Plumbing, Blooms Chemist and The Cleaning Shop.

The health and fitness services are available to the general public too, offering holistic health care in beautiful surroundings. Now these

services have been taken to a whole new level with the opening of the Living Choice Wellness Centre on 14th November.

Village manager, Angela Trevor, says she was motivated to create the Wellness Centre to assist both village residents and those in the surrounding community to achieve optimum health through an integrated approach to wellness. She enlisted the help of Sarah Fox of The Body Philosophy and they tackled the project with enthusiasm. Both are delighted that eight leading health, wellness and fitness practitioners now offer their services at the Wellness Centre.

The practitioners include Dr Troye Wallett (GP, Genwise), Jo Nelligan and Mark Heard (podiatrists, Healthy Life Foot Clinic), Bradley Yates (physiotherapist, Yates Physiotherapy), Sarah Fox (reflexologist/massage The Body Philosophy), Belinda Holmes (Water Aerobics by Belinda), Merilyn King and Sophie Egan (remedial massage therapists).

“Our practitioners have been selected for their compassion, commitment and expertise and work closely together to deliver a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary approach to health care,” she says.

“Their collaborative approach is based on respect for their fellow practitioners and their treatment modalities and this holistic approach will enhance the healing experience.”

The events have attracted music and book lovers, artists, Adelaide’s state and local leaders, as well

as those looking for an appealing place to retire with like-minded people.

In August, there was Art Expression @123, part of the month-long SALA exhibition, the launch of the second edition of “City Streets – Progressive Adelaide 75 years on” by the Premier of South Australia, Hon Jay Weatherill MP, followed by the exhibition “Living Stories, Colourful Lives”, featuring art, photography and creative writing by those living with a movement disorder.

The most recent event was the Fullarton Fashion Fiesta, expertly organised by Christine Murray, Helen Bonet and their helpers. The show featured the new Spring range by Laura Ashley and jewellery, resort wear, eyewear and accessories by `Jimmy Crystal New York in Australia’.

One of the Central Coast’s most iconic events, the Davistown Putt Putt Regatta and Wooden Boat Festival, was held in late October and, once again, the Living Choice stall attracted a big crowd.

Last year, the Resident Ambassadors from Alloura Waters ‘manned’ the Living Choice stand, however

this year the Ambassador team from Broadwater Court teamed up with village manager, Jodie Shelley and other staff members to fly the flag for Living Choice.

Jodie said the beautiful weather contributed to a fantastic day, enjoyed by many Living Choice residents and hundreds of others who flocked to the annual event, organised by the Lions Club of Green Point/Avoca in conjunction with the Davistown Progress Association.

“We gave away balloons, bags, flyers, bottles of water and caps and also organised face-painting, which was a huge hit with the children. It was a fabulous event and we will definitely do it all again next year,” she said.

The festival is held along the picturesque Illoura Reserve in Davistown and fills the wide grass reserve between the waterfront houses and the Brisbane Water. The regatta has an interesting history and was born from challenges held in the 1900’s between boat owners and builders competing for the crown of the fastest boat. The Putt Putt Regatta now attracts boats from all over Australia and the entrants get into the spirit of the occasion, donning vintage and novelty costumes.

Originally from Merrylands, Sydney, Lorna and her late husband Gavin used to holiday at The Entrance

and always wanted to retire to the Central Coast. “We wrote to the Gosford Council and they sent us a book on retirement villages. I made a shortlist of three and then asked my solicitor to choose the best one. He recommended Broadwater Court, which was my preferred village too, so I knew it was the right choice,” says Lorna.

They selected their home off the plan but sadly, Gavin passed away just two weeks before Lorna moved in, on 15th September 1992. “There were only a few homes here then and the community centre was a relocatable shed. It had a small kitchen, a table, a few chairs and a dartboard and we used to gather there with the then owner, Ron Dobler for drinks, cheese and biscuits. It was great fun.”

Lorna was an ambassador for Broadwater Court right from the beginning, helping in the sales office, at open days and at retirement village expos. She even assisted at open days at Living Choice Glenhaven when it was first launched and

remembers roping in former ambassador, John Wood, to help butter scones.

Over the years, she has been heavily involved in the village community, serving on the

committee for 10 years, organising Long Day Outings, fundraisers for cancer research,

playing snooker, teaching line dancing and reading at the local primary school. “I love Treeview Estate – it’s so homely and close to everything. I have made lovely friendships, I have lots of support and I don’t regret my decision for a minute.”

Living Choice Woodcroft residents, clients, staff members and invited guests celebrated another significant milestone in the history of the village on 13th October.

More than 120 people joined Living Choice Ambassador, Keith Conlon OAM for a

Morning Tea at the Vines Golf Club of Reynella to celebrate the awarding of Full Accreditation under the Lifemark Scheme to Living Choice Woodcroft, the last village in the Living Choice group to receive the coveted Accreditation.

Special guests included the President of the SA Retirement Villages Residents’ Association, Bob Ainsworth and his wife, Leveda, and SARVRA village representatives, Pam West of Woodcroft and Allan Perryman of Fullarton and his wife, Laurie.

Living Choice director, Graham Hobbs, stressed Living Choice’s support of the Retirement Living Council’s 8-Point Plan and said Living Choice would continue to maintain and develop good relationships with its residents and the Residents’ Association.

“I am staggered at the sense of community at Woodcroft, notwithstanding the residents’ experiences with the former operator. I am confident that the opening of the leisure centre will further enhance that close sense of community.”

Jason Sack, General Manager SA & Sydney, paid tribute to the residents and staff who had assisted throughout the Accreditation process and Angela Trevor, village manager at Living Choice Fullarton, highlighted the many ways that Accreditation had helped in the smooth running of her village.

Keith Conlon also gave an entertaining account of his busy life since retiring from Radio Fiveaa – including weekly ‘Bike Rides with Keith’, Fringe Festival events, serving on the SANFL history and annual history festival committees, forming a 6-piece jazz band and assisting at many charity events.

Then it was time to cut the Accreditation Cake, with village manager Steven Bielby and vice-chairman of the Woodcroft Residents’ Committee, Don Holmesby, doing the honours.

LIVING CHOICE WOODCROFT!

COME AND JOIN US!Long-time Living Choice Woodcroft resident, Mike Harley (top right), is keen to see more people embrace the lifestyle at the village and came up with a novel idea to attract new residents.

He asked residents to gather at the entrance to the village, in front of the new signs showcasing the

leisure centre under construction, and arranged for a photo to be taken to convey the message “Come and join us!”

It’s not surprising that Mike is always coming up with ways to promote the village. He has a background in insurance sales and management and assisted with advertising the Arthritis Foundation in SA for many years.

Mike and his wife Joan have lived at the village for nearly 16 years. He is thrilled that new owner, Living Choice, is building a leisure centre where residents, their grandchildren and visitors can gather. “We’ve always had a great social life here but the leisure centre is going to take it to a whole new level.”

CONVENIENT SHOPPING JUST ACROSS THE ROAD

With renovations recently being completed at both the supermarket and café, the Twin Waters

Shopping Village has also become a trendy, “must-visit” destination for everyone living on the North Shore.

New owners of the Foodworks Supermarket, Cody and Theona Barton, have significantly upgraded the store, adding an attractive deli, expanding their fresh fruit and veggie section (all sourced locally), stocking gourmet items such as Montville Coffee and Maleny cheeses, adding an extensive gluten-free range and selling nutritious pre-prepared meals. Living Choice residents are also able to obtain a 5% discount at the store.

One of the big advantages of living at Living Choice Twin Waters is being able to walk across the road to do grocery shopping, visit the doctor and pharmacy or enjoy a coffee, wine or meal at a choice of two restaurants.

Another recent renovation is the transformation of the previous café into the Cock & Hen, a hugely popular meeting place for people of all ages. Open 7 days for breakfast and lunch from 6.30am to 3pm, the café recently obtained a liquor licence and is now open Friday and Saturday evenings and Sunday afternoons too, offering modern cuisine at affordable prices.

For special occasions, residents can also enjoy lunch and dinner at The Loose Goose which offers European influenced, Australian cuisine.

The prospect of having a co-located aged care residence was a major drawcard for Ruth and David Law when they moved into Living Choice Twin Waters in March 2015.

Now they are reaping the benefits following David’s move into Estia Health Twin Waters soon after it opened in September this year. “It’s

exactly three minutes door to door to see my husband,” Ruth said during the filming of Living Choice’s new TV commercial which went to air in early November.

Ruth and David lived in the greater Twin Waters community for many years prior to moving into their spacious villa with their beloved dog Ivy. “It’s such a beautiful home,” Ruth said during her interview. “It’s convenient and I’ve made just the best friends - and I didn’t know any of them before! I have a better life now than I ever had.”

Fellow resident Robert Airs was also interviewed for the commercials. “People in the village are so supportive of each other and it’s great to know that you have the assurance that Living Choice is there for you.”

Robert, who has vast experience in the theatre, said he also enjoyed helping to arrange social events at the village.

Gail entered the village’s communal gardens into the 2017 Sydney Hills Garden Competition and also encouraged residents to enter their gardens too. Glenhaven not only took out the top award in its category but individual residents won two first places in their categories, plus a host of 2nd, highly commended and commended awards.

Gail praised the members of the gardening team for their outstanding effort and she paid tribute to the many green-fingered residents, including those who tended the veggie garden, for their enthusiasm and pride in their village. “The residents have also been wonderful mentors to Subhash over the years.”

The popular travel and cruise expos held at Living Choice Glenhaven not only showcase the latest travel destinations – they can also lead to a totally new “lock up, leave and travel” lifestyle!

Just ask Ted and Janet Utick who attended the travel expo held at the village in May 2015. Living in Cherrybrook

at the time, they saw the expo advertised in the local paper and, being keen travellers, they decided to check it out. They unexpectedly fell in love with the village, moving into their villa in July 2016. But the story does not end there.

Ted is a keen member of the award-winning Dural Men’s Shed and he spoke to his friend, Laurie Pentecost, about Living Choice Glenhaven. Laurie and his wife, Judith, also deposited on a villa at the village and were due to move in on 10th November this year.

Fittingly, all four enjoyed a cuppa at this year’s travel and cruise expo, held at the village on 4th November. Organised by Living Choice and Travel Managers, the expo featured leading travel and cruise exhibitors and attracted a big crowd of both residents and visitors. Five of those visitors promptly went on the waiting list for future homes at the village.

NEW APARTMENTS UNVEILED AT LEISURE LEA GARDENS

Three brand new apartments were unveiled at an Open Day at Leisure Lea Gardens on 2nd November and got the “thumbs-up” by those who attended.

The apartments have been named Gem and Elli (after the Italian word “Gemelli” meaning

twins) and Sorella (sister). They are located in

a private setting at the north end of the village, adjacent to a Catholic Church, and are beautifully appointed, with many modern features.

To celebrate the village’s smart new addition, a ribbon-cutting was held and the Resident Ambassadors and sales team hosted a BBQ for interested clients.

Thursday 2nd November was an auspicious day for Leisure Lea Gardens. Just hours after the Open Day to unveil the village’s three new apartments, Head Gardener Joel Perez was presented with the award for Best Commercial Garden in the City of Ryde’s annual Spring Garden Competition.

It is the third time the village has won the prestigious award, having won it in 2014, 2015 and now 2017.

In 2015, Denise and her partner, Carolyn Elwin, moved into their home at Living Choice Deepwater Court, where most days you will find Denise in her study, tapping away on her computer keyboard with her beloved dog Cindy at her feet.

Denise describes “This Eternal Journey” as “reality, nicely put”! “It’s a journey through the formative years of my life in Australia and into adulthood where I embraced many different cultures, languages and religions.

“In those years, I lost myself to love and betrayal, only to eventually discover my true self and life purpose. My hope is that some readers will be engaged by my writing to explore the shadow of their own lives. Maybe it will stir old memories, bring a smile or even a belly laugh, and spark the motivation to question their own life goals,” she adds.

Not one to rest on her laurels, Denise is already working on her next book “Back then in Australia”.

“The Eternal Journey” would make a great Christmas present for friends and family – see www.amazon.com/dp/B074KDCWKF email Denise on [email protected] or phone 0411 022 151.

Following the retirement of long-serving Living Choice Alloura Waters manager, Garry Spencer, a new manager, Dale Eastwood, has been appointed at the village and is embracing the challenge of running such a successful village.

Dale, who has been in the retirement and aged care industry for many years, says he considers himself

fortunate to have been given the opportunity to join an organisation “with such a wonderful reputation”.

“I have a real passion to support senior residents and this position offers new and exciting challenges for me, all of which I am enjoying. I am working with a fine group of people and am enthusiastic about the future of this great village.”

Ezio and Ivana Allemano of Living Choice Kawana Island have lived all over the world but hardly knew their neighbours. “Now we live in a community where they care about you and it is such an inspirational thing,” says Ezio.

COMMERCIALS

Ivana and Ezio Allemano are filmed by Damon Chapman and Justin Grover of Sound Images in their apartment.

Ezio, Ivana and fellow resident, Mary Paton, were recently interviewed for Living Choice’s

new 30-second Sunshine Coast television commercials which went to air on 5 November. Longer transcripts of their testimonials will also be available on the Living Choice website.

Ivana says they were living at Broadbeach but started to feel uncomfortable, describing the Gold Coast as over-developed. “We went on the web and saw Kawana Island and got excited!”

Ezio says they did a lot of research on the internet, looking at villages from the Central Coast to Noosa. They travelled up to see Kawana Island on a beautiful sunny day, taking their beloved dog Pepe with them. “We met Suzie Gray, who was so bubbly with a lovely personality. She showed us around and we fell in love with the village.”

During their interview, Ezio and Ivana spoke about their apartment, which they described as spacious, well-designed and with good cross-ventilation. They also praised village manager, Russ Dunstan, the staff, the leisure centre facilities and activities. “You can do as much, or as little, as you like and there is such a great choice – you could be busy every day.”

Resident Mary Paton has been at the village with her husband, David, since April 2009 and in her interview she said she particularly enjoyed the opportunity to keep fit. “We are told that we need to keep moving as we mature so this is the perfect place for me. When the family come to visit, we can all go kayaking, which is great.”

Living Choice Kawana Island Head Gardener Simon Neale is filmed for the new TV commercials.
