Fall is in the air, and soon we will beginthe process of wardrobe switching –moving aside the summer clothing to
make room for cooler weather items. It is alsoa time that the holiday decorations begin tosurface and that long ignored storage area islike a time bomb waiting to detonate. This is aperfect transition time to really look at itemsyou no longer need or wear. This processcould create a pile larger than a jumbo jet, andthen you are hit with the dilemma of what todo with those discards. Do you sell, toss ordonate? If you are considering donating itemsto your favorite local charity, or think you maywant to take a stab at consignment, take timeto check out the tips below. • When choosing which items to give away,
donate items that charities can sell to make aprofit. Think about what it is that you aredonating and if it can truly benefit the charity. Most, if not all, have limited funds anddisposing of items that are of no use to themand costs them money. Charities willappreciate and benefit from yourthoughtfulness.
• With recent recalls on children’s items (toys, baby equipment) be sure to see if the itemsyou want to donate are not included on anygovernment list. Some charities will not
accept these items.• Clothing items, which are stained or torn,
really should not be considered for donationor resale. Bear in mind as well, that if youpaid an exorbitant amount for a piece ofclothing, and it is used, you may not be ablesell it for what you think you will. You haveto accept this aspect of resale. A $200 blousedoes not necessarily equate to a $200 resalevalue.
• Think of where you would like to donate orconsign items. Baby items can be given topregnancy help centers. Cell phones can bedonated to various charities like Cell Phonesfor Soldiers or a local battered women’sshelter. Dress for Success is a terrific programfor women’s business clothing. Non-profitsor schools may consider your unwanted andgently used holiday decorations. Consign atshops that specialize in your items for the bestrate of success.
• Never assume your items are accepted fordonation. Check the charity’s website or givethem a call if you are uncertain of a particularitem. Likewise for resale – there should be amarket for it. Just because you think it has

value, may not be the case. It really doesbenefit you to do some homework aheadof time. “One man’s junk” may not be the‘treasure’ you think, and be just junk.
• Is the clean out process a daunting task?Set up a ‘donation’ or ‘resale’ basket in yourcloset and try and donate/consign once amonth instead of seasonally or annually. This keeps the closets from overflowingand may inspire you to do it more often. Itwill be easier to keep track of the value ofwhat you are donating or consigning aswell. Breaking this task down into amonthly “to-do” will make it manageableand not as overwhelming.
• Make it easy on yourself – if there is a pick-up service available use it. This will keepyou motivated to keep the process movingalong.
TAX TIP: Make your donations work for you in more ways than one. Keep all receiptsfor tax purposes. Not sure of the worth? keep track electronically on-line atitsdeductibleonline.intuit.com by Intuit. Thisprogram will calculate what your items arecurrently worth.
