Finding and Embedding Resources

What is Embedding ?
Finding Resources to Embed
Creating Resources to Embed
Embedding
Embedding is when you insert a document of one type into a document of another type.
Embedding
An example would be when you insert a spreadsheet into a word processing document.
Embedding
Within like-programs, such as those within Microsoft Office, the ability to embed is relatively easy because the programs have a shared development basis.
With tens of thousands of programs, the inter-operability is not nearly as friendly.
Embedding
As we know, the World Wide Web has allowed for a common “platform” where documents of all types – papers, slideshows, videos, etc - can be accessed by everyone, instead of being housed on one’s own computer.
Embedding
Embedding on the WWW is about sharing.
Prior to Web 2.0 developments, if you wanted to access a resource – video, presentation, etc. you either had to have it sent to you, via an email....
Embedding
...and then you had to ensure that you had the correct program with which to open it.
Plus – it was a lot of steps and sometimes files were too big for email accounts
• Attach/Send/Save/File/Open...
Embedding
Or, you searched...and found links...and then clicked on a link... and waited....and waited for a document to download to your computer...and then you opened it up...and...
Get the picture ?
Embedding
Embedding on the web (in a fashion similar to the spreadsheet embedded in the word document) allows objects to be “gathered” in one place and presented in a manner that gives the viewer an easier-to-handle representation of the source document.
Embedding
Did that sound too wordy ?
Here is a screenshot of a PowerPoint slideshow and a PDF document displayed in a wiki using the embed code.
Embedding
Each – the slideshow and the PDF document - is housed in a player that allows for interaction • viewing• printing • downloading • some allow commenting
Embedding
Embedding
It is computer code that is used to place a document (such as a slideshow or video) into another document (such as a blog, a wiki or a website) as you have seen.

Embedding
The key is to find the Embed code which is related to the resource that you wish to embed in your blog or wiki.
You simply copy it and then paste it into your blog or wiki in the appropriate spot.
Embedding
Sometimes, the term Widget is used to define the mechanism by which the object is embedded into the blog or wiki.
