Commodore’s Corner

Let me start by thanking you for voting

in this year’s election. I consider it an

honor to serve as your Commodore for

the upcoming year. I would like to

thank Commodore By Baldridge for

stepping in for another term on the flag.

He has been instrumental in helping our

club navigate through some turbulent

waters as we completed our recovery

from Ike and has been a tremendous help

in many of the projects, regattas and

events we have had around the club. I

know we can count on him to be there to

help us going forward. Congratulations

to our new Rear Commodore, Nancy

Edmonson, Treasurer Robert Williams,

Fleet Captain James Liston, Measurer

John Cardenas and all of our new Trus-

tees that have been voted in for the next

term. I look forward to working with

this solid group to lead the club over the

next year. Let me also thank our outgo-

ing officers and trustees for all the work

they have done to keep the club strong.

As By has reported this last year was a

very active one at HYC with the many

big regattas we have hosted, the projects

that have been undertaken and the fun

social events that we have had. It takes

a great group of folks to put all of these

together and it is one of HYC’s finest

traditions to get in there and make it

happen. Since the last Windjammer we

have hosted the Hinman Cup National

Team Race Championship and the Van-

guard 15 Nationals. Both of which were

very successful events. We are recog-

nized throughout the country as one of

the clubs that can handle big events and

we do it with a smile. Away from the

club we had several teams travel to

Southern Yacht Club for the J22 Worlds

and as always the Ragnots have contin-

ued their journeys racing around the

globe and scoring some very impressive

results.

As I sit here now I am keeping an eye on

the Ensign Kid Cup Regatta and I am

pleased to see the Mosquito Fleet is en-

tering the harbor as it returns from the

Allen’s Landing run. It appears to have

gone without incident and we did not

need to send them provisions for an ex-

tended stay. The annual Boo Boating

has brought out all the gremlins in their

finest Halloween garb.

We just had the Ragnot End of Year

Banquet which theoretically wraps up

the year for the kids. But in reality these

guys never stop. Several sailors were

recognized for their outstanding results

and contributions over the year includ-

ing; Yuki Yoshiyasu for Sportsmanship,

Parker Hughes won the Kirk Arnold

Club Championship, Kiera O’Reardon

and Charlotte Rose shared the Never

Give Up award. Reed Baldridge re-

ceived the Buck Hayworth Youth

Yachtsman of the Year Award for 2011.

Reed has developed into a very accom-

plished sailor over the years, coaches the

younger Ragnots, helps around the club

and has sailed with me in a number of

regattas. I can definitely attest to his

skills and thank him for being a great

crew and friend. Congratulations to all

the Ragnots for their accomplishments

on and off the water.

It’s hard to believe it’s that time of year

again and in the blink of an eye the holi-

days are upon us. Soon we will settle in

for Thanksgiving dinner and then it is

Christmas. As always the club does a

very nice job for each of these special

occasions so if you haven’t before, you

might consider including it in your fami-

lies’ holiday plans. And the boating

action never ends at HYC. In November

we have the Club Championship, J22

Heritage Cup, the Turkey Day Regatta

and the Yachting Committee has a trip

planned to Double Bayou.

Next year promises to be just as exciting

and action packed as 2011. We already

have several big events lined up with the

J22 Midwinter’s in February, the Laser

US Championship in May and Lightning

North American Championship in Au-

gust. Couple that with our list of regular

functions and events and you can see we

have lots of action in our part of the

world. Fleet Captain Liston is starting to

work on the calendar for 2012 and the

calendar meeting will be on Dec. 4. If

you have events that you are working on

please feed those into James so he can

record them and we will finalize the cal-

endar at the meeting.

Thank you to all the committees for your

hard work and creativity over the last

year. Whether it’s sprucing up the

house, making improvements in the har-

bor or planning a one of our vintage par-

ties these committees get it done. We

will be working on committee chairs for

the upcoming year so if you have an

interest in being part of the glue that

binds our club together let us know and

we can get you in the right direction.

We have a number of projects already in

the pipeline for this winter and I intend

to continue By’s “done by 1:00” model

to tackle many of these.

One last note. As you know, Beth and I

like a good party and we hope to provide

a Commodore’s Ball that is one for the

books. Beth is already working to make

sure this annual event exceeds expecta-

tions and yes, that includes having a

thorough structural inspection of the bar

furniture! So ink in Jan. 21, get that

babysitter lined up if needed and get

your dancing shoes ready. Signing off

for now. See you at the club!

Special Olympics Weekend at HYC The Special Olympics of Texas flag flew from the HYC signal mast Sept. 24-25. The State Regatta was Saturday, with sailors from the HYC team and Corinthian Sailing Club team racing in Flying Scots. The weather was beautiful for two races in the morning and one in the afternoon, joining the HYC Fall Series racers on the water. Sunday the State Kayaking Com-petition was held off Shell Beach. Even with strong southwest winds, the condi-tions were perfect. Special Olympics kay-akers from HYC, Duncanville and Arling-ton participated in 200 and 500 meter sprints. Awards ceremonies both days in the Beachcomber were enjoyed by all. Thank you to the HYC members and staff and the Flag for doing a great job of host-ing these events. Submitted by Jack Yoes

Ensign Fleet

The Ensign Fleet 2 Distance Race which

was held recently had the best of all worlds

– cool temperatures, great winds (a little

fresh on Saturday) and a raucous social

gathering on Saturday night. Three boats

made the trip, The Other Woman (John

Cutler), Squawline (Robert Williams) and

Little Oil (Dean Snider). Oak Island was

found to be a delightful destination with a

lot of local character and services for cruis-

ing sailors.

Saturday morning started out with Easterly

winds at 10-15 knots which made the trip

through Five Mile Pass and Trinity Bay a

beat. Squawline made use of its fishing

knowledge of Five Mile Pass to beat

through while paying no attention to the

channel markers. The Other Woman and

Little Oil cranked up their motors to follow

the channel markers. This worked OK for

The Other Woman but Little Oil's motor

failed soon after start up so they followed

Squawline and made it through with no

trouble.

The trip through Trinity Bay saw winds

freshen to 15-20 early in the transit and

then gradually die to almost nothing as the

boats approached Double Bayou (DB)

Channel. This was not a race day, but was

to be a cruise day. However, for those in-

terested, the lead alternated between The

Other Woman and Squawline. The Other

Woman may have won because of a strate-

gic call for lunch and no tacking during

lunch.

The trip through the 3.4 mile DB Channel

was also a beat, but the wind was now

light and the boats traveled it under power.

Squawline was picked up by a pre-

arranged tow and The Other Woman was

kind enough to tow Little Oil to the docks

in front of the Hurricane restaurant. The

Hurricane restaurant was the site of dinner

Saturday night and we had our own room

for dining so that we did not disturb the

locals dining there.

Sunday arrived cool and with an East wind

that was 10-15 and headed directly at

HYC. Billy Richnow power boated to DB

on Sunday morning to set up a starting line

at DB Marker #2. It was a downwind start

around 10:20 and the first boat arrived at

HYC two hours and six minutes later. It

was a fantastic sail across Trinity Bay with

the wind shifting from East to North East.

The pinch point in the race was the west

end of the Five Mile Pass. The question

was how close to pass the tip of Atkinson

Island without going aground. The "color"

of the water was used to make the decision

and nobody went aground but it was close.

The finish of the race with the boats still

tightly packed. Little Oil barely nosed out

Squawline for the win after a luffing duel

from Five Mile Pass to HYC where Billy

Richnow had set up a finish line at the

Judges stand.

The consensus of the group was that Dou-

ble Bayou is a clear choice for replacing

the historic DW trip to Galveston: No slip

fees, 17 miles versus 25 miles, one night

lodging at $75 for a room with two queen

size beds and private bath. The motel was

built after Ike and is no Waldorf, but is

clean, the beds are fine and the shower

feels great after the trip over. The Hurri-

cane restaurant is five yards from the dock

and the motel is at most 75 yards from the

dock.

Race and Regatta

We are so thrilled to report that Angantyr,

our 1964 steel-hulled, cutter-rigged Abek-

ing & Rasmussen 61’ won first place in her

cruising/non-spinnaker division (Division I)

in the Harvest Moon Regatta held recently.

After a month of intensive effort with help

from friends, we got Angantyr ready for her

sea-trial/shakedown in the Harvest Moon

Regatta. There is still much work to be

done, but Angantyr is well on her way to being a fully-functioning sailing vessel

again.

Formerly owned, significantly updated, and

splendidly restored by former Houston

Yacht Club members Sam and Carol Judge,

Angantyr became our project when we pur-

chased her as she was in her HYC slip in

June 2007. Originally commissioned by

renowned sailor James Crawford, Angantyr

was launched in January 1964 in Germany

and served as home to the Crawford family

for many years and a number of Atlantic

crossings. Following his singlehanded At-

lantic crossing in Angantyr in 1973, Craw-

ford was awarded the prestigious Blue Wa-

ter Medal by the Cruising Club of America.

About the Author New Orleans native and current owner Erik Oistad registered his home town as the port

of call. Bringing Angantyr back to life fol-

lowing Hurricane Ike is an ongoing and

arduous effort. Most of the work is done by

the owners themselves. Winning a race the

first time out of the slip is a tribute to the

excellent design and inherent strengths of

sailing vessel Angantyr.

HYC Members Win Big During The Harvest Moon Regatta

The Humphries family and crew participated in the Harvest Moon Regatta. Pictured above are Joe Powers, Henry Humphries, Ken Humphries, Joanne Humphries, Rick Jenner, Richard Fawcett and John Gabriel.

The J/120 Aeolus, with HYC members

James Liston and Gordie Keenan aboard,

took second place in the Bacardi Racing

Fleet Division A, reaching the finish line in

Port Aransas in a little over 18 hours (17

hours corrected), and being third overall in

the Bacardi Racing fleet.

Crew included Keith Magnussen, Art Ro-

den, Buddy Byington, and Sean Nelson,

with Ruth Keenan on the ground crew/Port

-A team. Steady winds from the stern

quarter kept the seas relatively calm and

kept the deck dry, allowing us to fly a kite

all the way down the coast, making for a

fast trip.

James, Gordie and Ruth have been doing

the Harvest Moon Race for more than 20

years in various boats (including James's

Catalina 30, the prior Aeolus, and Ruth

and Gordie's PT-32, Puffin) and say this

was one of the nicest rides they have had.

Once in Port A, Gordie, Ruth, James and

the crew repaired to the Sandcastle Con-

dos, where they had a shrimp boil and en-

joyed time in the pool and hot tub on Fri-

day and Saturday (and slept some

also). HYC members from other boats

came by the Condos and joined in the

fun. They can't wait to do it again next

year....

Race and Regatta

Several HYC members participated in the Harvest Moon Re-gatta.

(Pictured left to right) Jim Tyson, Daphne and Gerald Pickering

Harvest moon 2011 was a totally different experience than 2010

for the crew of the HYC boat Sea Nymph. Last year we were blasting through 12 foot seas in 30+ knot gusts, a reef in the main

while hanging on for dear life. This year we had to apply patience,

skill and did I mention patience? When we rounded the 5A mark

on the Galveston jetties we shattered a mainsheet shackle on the

gybe - the last strong wind we were to experience for two days!

The start was exciting with several boats called over early. Our

start was OK - we had two master tacticians aboard (Jack Yoes

and William Plant) who made all the right calls and put us in the

front of the pack! And then the wind died… we watched AN-

GANTYR, a boat in our division, sloooowly pass us. At least it

was an HYC boat! Then the wind picked up, we passed him! But then it died again… and so it went all night/day long until we fin-

ished the following evening. No trophy this year but we put in a

respectable performance and are pleased with our results.

Many things went very well on this trip. The boat was reasonably

well prepared if a bit heavy for the conditions. The crew was su-

perb. We had an outstanding selection of talent, experience and

physical ability aboard. Everyone (with the notable exception of

the Skipper) was courteous and considerate of the others. We exe-

cuted a well designed watch system which help minimize crew

fatigue. And we ate like KINGS. Cissy Yoes carefully prepared pre-cooked home made meals packed in plastic which she heated

up and served with appetizers, port wine/cheese, and desert! I

understand on other boats you are lucky to get a bottle of water

and a sandwich on dry bread…

Port Aransas was lots of fun. When we made landfall at Island

Moorings Friday night our shore crew greeted us with champagne

in flutes! Thereafter followed a fairly loud and wild party in the

cockpit; you'd have thought we'd just won America's Cup! Next

was a brief interval of sleep followed by breakfast at the Keenan's,

then our traditional HYC pool party featuring "Dr." Jack dispens-ing his patented scurvy remedy as well as Dmitriy and his Bloody

Mary stand. The Keenan's hosted us again for their annual HYC

shrimp boil which is always a delightful afternoon. Our shore

crew shuttled us to the Port Aransas city pavillion where we par-

ticipated in the rum tasting and cheered friends as they received

awards. After that, back to the Sandcastle to boil in the hot tub -

no problem sleeping after a day like that! The next day we set out

at 8 a.m. for the trip home, lost a fan belt in the channel, dodged

oil rigs offshore in the dark, and had a HUGE time.

The weather was great; there is something stirring about sailing through Galveston harbor in the company of 15 - 20 other sail

boats. We put the pole out and sailed wing-on-wing up the chan-

nel to HYC. The sun was setting, the breeze gentle, the colors

intense - we love this…

It eventually had to happen. The torrid

high temperatures that have baked us for

months have finally given in to some

cooler and pleasant weather conducive to

outdoor activities. One such opportunity

to enjoy the great outdoors will be HYC’s

Fall Fishing Tournament. The event is

hosted by the Membership Committee and

will be Saturday, Nov. 12. Our first fish-

ing event held this past spring was a great

success, although I do recall the fish won

round one. However, October and No-

vember are the best months for fishing in

upper Galveston Bay and I expect there

will be some hefty catches. We will have

a brief skippers meeting in the Centennial

Room on the 11th at 7 p.m. during happy

hour.

In a nutshell, the event simply requires you

to sign up, fish Galveston Bay on Satur-

day, and return to the Beachcomber at 4

pm with your catch. Based upon what is

caught, prizes will be awarded. Derek

Beck is HYC’s current fishing champion.

October is our first month in the club’s

new fiscal year. I look forward to the up-

coming year and anticipate that we will

continue to increase our overall member-

ship as well as fill slips in the harbor.

A brief recap of some of the events and

actions taken by membership over the last

12 months includes: 1) attendance at boat

show where 52 contacts were made and

invited to membership events; 2) target

mail out was sent to new boat owners ; 3)

target correspondence was sent to former

members; 4) the club hosted two member-

ship family fun day events (May and Sep-

tember); 5) the club sent out more than 30 press releases ap-

pearing in publications in the bay area; 6) a cocktail/dinner

reception was held at club in October; 7) an ensign fun sail

for prospective members ; and 8) consultation with the Hurri-

cane Business Recovery Center for marketing assistance.

Additionally, various incentives to join the club were ex-

tended to former and prospective members throughout the

year. All of these efforts were very successful and resulted in

many membership applications. Membership hosts a

monthly reception for our prospective new members.

It is also the role of the membership committee to review new

member applications, vet the prospective members, and then

deliver a committee recommendation on admittance to the

Board of Trustees for final vote. The membership committee

also is charged with receiving and working with Board in

resolving member disputes. Fortunately, no disputes have

been presented to the committee. Let’s keep this streak go-

ing.

One of the goals for the upcoming year is to review and re-

vise the club’s website. We believe that there is room for

improvement in areas such as marketing, member use and

interaction, design and graphics. The ultimate goal will be to

make the website more dynamic.

The November Prospective New Member Reception will be

held at the Club Nov. 11 at 6:30 p.m. All members are in-

vited and encouraged to attend to meet and greet our prospec-

tive new members. These events are held in conjunction with

happy hour and provide an excellent opportunity to see and

share a cocktail with some old friends while greeting some

new ones. I hope to see you there.

The Ladies Association October program, Laughing at Dan-

ger provided the 40 attendees with valuable tips and tech-

niques for staying safe at home and away from home, plus

gave us a lot of laughs. Thanks everyone for coming. We

were pleased to have some gentlemen join us for this event,

John Focke, Dick Ingraham, Fred Young and Fount McKee.

Nov. 2 is the Holiday Market on the Bay at HYC. Come and

do some early Christmas shopping, lots of vendors to satisfy

your needs. Family, friends and guests welcome. Market

hours are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. A buffet lunch will be avail-

able. See you there.

In years past, the Ladies Association had a booth and sold

goods at the Holiday Market to help raise funds for our an-

nual gift to the Club. This developed into a lot a work with

little return. Several years ago it was decided to ask each

member of the Ladies Association to donate $25 to this fund-

raising effort in lieu of the booth. Therefore, the Ladies As-

sociation Board is asking each member to help the Club by

participating in this project. You can make your donation

via cash, check or HYC ticket, at the Holiday Market or by

calling the Club. Or you can call or email me. Thanks for

your help.

Games Day is Nov. 30. Mark your calendar since this is a

change in the normal schedule as the fourth Thursday falls

on Thanksgiving. If you would like to play Bridge, contact

Barbara Matuszak. If anyone would like to pursue other

games such as cards, dominoes, bingo, etc. please contact

me.

Mark your calendar for the Annual Ladies Association

Christmas Luncheon Wednesday, Dec. 14. This is always an

elegant and fun time. More details in the December Wind-

jammer.

The Ladies Association Board strives to provide programs

and events that promote fellowship among members and

encourage participation in the social activities of the Asso-

ciation and the Club. We sincerely hope you will join us.

SAILING REPORT by Sailing Director Scott Lindley

I just wanted to say how much fun we had

this month so far with the HYC Sailing Team

at USODA South East Championships in

Marco Island, FL and the Chocopa-

looza Regatta in Dallas. It seems like we

were on the road all month. The SE Champs

was one of the best venues I have ever trav-

eled to with one of the best setups for sailing

at a regatta. The regatta was hosted out of a

resort on the beach where the Optis launched

right in front of the resort. So you walk from

your hotel room to your Opti. Conditions

were epic the first day then deteriorated as the

week went on with lighter air. The last day

had one race in 3 plus or minus knots which

at one point went to zero knots. Some of the

kids didn't make the time limit in that race.

However, we will have a handful of sailors

who will make Spring International Teams.

(We are still waiting on selections.) All and

all it was great learning experience for our

younger sailors; they walked away better

sailors for sure.

The Chocopalooza Regatta in Dallas was the

13th regatta in the TSA Circuit and it was a

blast! We had light but great sailing condi-

tions and Team HYC did great. Dane Byerly

from Lakewood Yacht Club who sails in our

program won the regatta. HYC members

Daniel Kendrick won the Laser 4.7, William

Romeo won the Laser Radial and Forrest

Short won the 420 Fleet. It was a great show-

ing from HYC Kids.

We have so much going on over the next few

months. In addition to our practice schedule,

the rest of the schedule looks like this:

Nov. 5: End of Year Regatta at LYC; TSA

Awards Banquet

Nov. 6: Team Racing at LYC

Nov. 12-13: Fall Advanced Opti Clinic at

HYC

Nov. 24-26: USODA Opti Midwinter Cham-

pionships in New Orleans

Dec: 10-11: Opti Team Race Clinic at HYC

Dec. 26-30: Orange Bowl International Youth

Regatta Miami, FL
