Common Nouns

Nouns are words that name a person, place or thing. Every noun can be further classified as common or proper.

Common nouns name general things and do not begin with capital letters unless they begin a sentence.

Writing with Nouns

Man, clay, and hands are nouns - words that name.

A noun can name a person, place, or thing.

We can see or touch all of these.A noun can also name an idea.

Singular Plural Rule

Common and Proper Nouns

Proper Nouns are specific nameof people, places,

and things.They need a

CAPITAL LETTER!

Common Nouns are not specific names.

They use a LOWER CASE

LETTER!

Proper Nouns

A proper noun is a name given to a specific person, place or thing. Proper nouns always begin with capital letters.

Examples of proper nouns found in your classroom would be:

Possessive Nouns

Possessive nouns show ownership.

The thing or person who possesses something gets the apostrophe.

Plural nouns that do not show ownership do NOT have apostrophes.

Possessive pronouns do NOT have apostrophes.
