A52 Nottingham Junctions Construction at Nottingham Road and Cropwell Road junctions commencing early January 2017
A52 Nottingham Junctions
Construction at Nottingham Road and Cropwell Road junctions commencing early January 2017
Introduction
The A52 is the key east-west link across the East Midlands. The route is subject to congestion at its junctions due to capacity issues, resulting in significant queuing and delays. Several junctions have been identified as requiring improvements to cope with the existing problems, as well as to provide capacity for the increase in traffic anticipated when the local developments are completed.
The A52 Nottingham Junctions scheme, announced in the Autumn Statement 2014 and included in the government’s first Road Investment Strategy (RIS1), consists of a 2-phase package of measures to improve the junctions along the length of the A52 in Nottingham, including signalisation and junction reconstruction.
The first phase will address the eastern junctions, from Gamston to Bingham Road, and the second phase will address the western junctions, from QMC Island to Wheatcroft. We plan to start work on 2 of the eastern junctions in January 2017.

Starting construction in January 2017
We plan to start construction on the Nottingham Road junction – also known as the RSPCA junction – and the Cropwell Road junction in early January 2017.
Nottingham Road junction proposalTo upgrade the Nottingham Road junction, we will be installing new traffic signals on all approaches to the junction, which will be programmed to improve the flow of traffic.
The road will be widened on the north side of the junction and a new lane will be added. This will allow drivers to make a u-turn movement, which is being removed from Stragglethorpe junction.
We will make improvements to the existing pedestrian crossing point on Nottingham Road and provide a new pedestrian crossing point on the A52. We will also provide a new footpath on the southern side of the junction to connect to the public rights of way network, and a new 3 metre wide footpath on the northern side to replace the existing footpath that is removed as part of the works.
We will upgrade the existing drainage system, provide new street lighting and road signs, resurface the road and renew road markings. The resurfacing work will extend from the railway bridge (on the A52 western side) through to Lees Barn Road (on the eastern side). This combines resurfacing required as part of the junction scheme with longer term highway maintenance work on the A52.

Proposed layout at A52/Cropwell Road junction
Cropwell Road junction proposalTo upgrade the Cropwell Road junction, we will be installing new traffic signals on all approaches to the junction, which will be programmed to improve the flow of traffic.
The A52 will be widened through the junction in both directions to improve capacity and safety for vehicles making right turns into Cropwell Road.
The existing bus stops will be moved to be on the approaches to the junction instead of on the exits where vehicles will be accelerating.
We will make improvements to the existing crossing points, improving safety for pedestrians. Footpaths will provide safe access to the new bus stop locations. The north side footpath will be widened to 3 metres.
We will upgrade the existing drainage system, provide new street lighting and road signs, resurface the road and renew road markings.

Environment
We have carried out environmental surveys at all junctions, and we have put measures in place to reduce environmental impact:
We will keep hedgerow pruning to a minimum during construction, to help reduce the residents’ view of the works.
We will ensure any noisy work takes place before midnight.
We will use methods to reduce the amount of noise and dust produced during construction.
We will return all grass verges affected by the work to their original condition.
We will ensure that the new street lights match the current lighting so that local residents and nocturnal animals will not be affected by an increase in brightness at night.
Minimising the impact of constructionThe construction of the Nottingham Road and Cropwell Road junctions has been carefully planned to ensure minimal disruption to local residents and members of the public travelling through the junctions. In addition to the environmental measures mentioned above, other measures that will be in place include:
Construction work will mainly take place overnight between 8pm and 6am. Any works carried out during the day will be carefully managed to reduce impact and delay for road users.
School buses will remain unaffected and all public bus services will continue to run. Any temporary bus stop closures or diversions will be advertised by the bus companies.
All turning movements at Nottingham Road junction will be possible during the busy day time hours for the majority of construction.
Some turning movements at Cropwell Road junction will be limited during the works, but clearly signed diversion routes will be in place.
Next steps
Construction will commence at the Nottingham Road and Cropwell Road junctions in early January 2017. Preferred layouts have been developed for Gamston roundabout, Stragglethorpe Road and Bingham Road junctions and construction will begin in 2017/18, subject to funding. Further details on these three junctions are shown below.
The remaining junctions along the A52 Nottingham corridor will be investigated and, where necessary, we will develop options to be assessed.
Eastern junction proposalsGamston roundabout junction
We plan to add additional lanes on the A52 approaches to the roundabout to increase the number of vehicles that can use the junction and to reduce queuing. We also plan to install new traffic signals and lighting on the roundabout, as well as providing new pedestrian crossing across both of the A52 roundabout arms to improve safety for road users.
Stragglethorpe Road junction
We plan to prohibit the existing u-turn movement (from the A52 eastbound carriageway to the A52 westbound carriageway) to help traffic flow better at the junction. Drivers will be able to make this movement at the Nottingham Road junction instead. We will also install new traffic signals and lighting to improve safety.
Bingham Road junction (also known as Harlequin junction)
We plan to add new carriageway to provide new right-turn lanes for vehicles turning into Bingham Road and Carter Avenue. This will improve the flow of traffic on the A52 as drivers will not become stuck behind the right-turning vehicles. Two left turns will be prohibited at the new junction, and road users will be required to use the local road network for alternative routes to their destination. We also plan to improve the pedestrian crossing points and install new traffic signals and lighting to improve safety.
