The Best Offense Is A Good Defense…During the past 16 seasons, Notre Damehas discovered that a solid defensive effortcan almost certainly guarantee a victory. …But Sometimes You Have To Score If You Want To WinNot resting solely on its defensive laurels,Notre Dame also seemingly has found themagicmark when it comes to outscoring itsopponents.Duringthepast16seasons(since1995-96), the Fighting Irish are 147-5 (.967)whentheyscoreatleast80pointsinagame.The only blemishes on that record are threeovertime losses to Texas A&M (88-84) andMichiganState(87-83)in1995andUCLA(86-83indoubleOT)in2010,aswellasa106-81losstoConnecticutin1998,andan81-80losstoDePaulin2008. Head Coach Muffet McGraw24th season at ND (534-206, .722) • 29th season overall (622-247, .716)
“Ifwesearchedforanentireyear,Idon’tthinkwewouldfindanyone better suited for our program.”
With those words, former Notre Dame athletics director Gene Corrigan announced the hiring of Muffet McGraw as the third head coach of the Irish women’s basketball program on May 18, 1987. Corrigan may not have realized it at the time, but he also ushered in an era of unparalleled success in women’s basketball at Notre Dame, brought to life on the shoulders of a 5-foot-6 dy-namo who accepts nothing less than the very best from herself, her players and her program. Ask anyone familiar with women’s basketball about McGraw and her Notre Dame program and inevitably, you’ll hear the same two words — consistency and excellence. And it’s no wonder, when you consider what McGraw and the Irish have achieved in the past 23 seasons:
• The2001NCAAChampionship,defeatingPurdueinthetitlegame, 68-66. McGraw is one of only eight active Division I coaches to guide her team to a national title.
• TwotripstotheNCAAFinalFour(1997and2001).McGrawis one of just 15 active Division I coaches to lead her team to multipleFinalFourappearances.
• EightNCAASweet16trips,allinthepast14seasons(1997-2010).TheIrishareoneofonly10programsinthenationthatcan make that claim.
• 17NCAATournamentappearances,includingacurrentstringof15consecutiveNCAATournamentberths.Duringthefirst15yearsofthiscurrentstreak(1996-2010),NotreDamehaswon at least one NCAA postseason game 13 times.
• 204appearancesintheAssociatedPressTop25poll,puttingMcGraw 13th among active Division I coaches and 22nd all-timeonthatlist(throughtheDec.20,2010poll).NotreDamealsohasspent95weeksrankedamongthetop10teamsinthenation,allinthepast13-plusseasons(1997-2011).
• 12 top-four finishes in theBIGEASTConference duringNotreDame’sfirst15yearsinthatleague(1995-96through2009-10).TheIrishalsowonashareofthe2001BIGEASTregular-season title.
• 15consecutivetop-20recruitingclasses,datingtotheincomingclass of 1997. Notre Dame is one of just three programs in the nation that owns an active streak of that length.
• Oneofonlyfivecoachesinthe124-yearhistoryofFightingIrishathleticstowin500gamesatNotreDame,joiningfencing’sMichael DeCicco and Yves Auriol, men’s tennis/wrestling coach Tom Fallon and baseball’s Jake Kline.
• Far and away thewinningest basketball coach (men’s orwomen’s)inschoolhistory, withnotedmen’sskipperRichard “Digger” Phelpssecondonthatlist(393wins).
• Aperfect100-percentgraduationrateforallplayersenteringthe program since 1987 who have completed their athletic and academiceligibilityatNotreDame(aspotless62-for-62suc-cessrate).TheIrishhavepostedaperfect100-percentNCAAGraduationSuccessRate(GSR)scoreineachofthepastfouryears,andtheyareoneofonlyfiveprogramsinthecountrytocombineaperfectGSRscorewithatriptotheNCAASweet16twicewithinthepastthreeseasons(2008and2010).
Still,withallofthoseaccomplishmentsinhand,McGrawhasshownnosignsofslowingdownanytimesoon.InJuly2008,theveteran head coach signed a contract extension that will keep her patrollingtheIrishsidelinesthroughthe2014-15campaign. “Formore than20 years,Muffet has ledour programwithintegrity and passion, and, of course, to much success,” said Rev. John I. Jenkins, C.S.C., Notre Dame’s president. “As we lookforwardtomanymoreyearstogether,Iamconfidentthattheexcellence she has achieved on and off the court will continue.” UnderMcGraw’sguidance,thepast16seasons(1995-96to2010-11)havebeenthemostsuccessfulinNotreDame’shistory.The Irishhavecompiledan impressive375-126 (.748) record,includingasparkling190-60(.759)regular-seasonmarkinBIGEASTplay,thesecond-bestwinningpercentageinleaguehistory.NotreDamealsohasaveragedmorethan24victoriesperyearduring that span, with two 30-win seasons and seven 25-wincampaignsto itscredit.TheIrishhavewonat leastoneNCAATournamentgame13timesinthepast15years,advancingtotheSweet16eighttimes(1997,1998,2000,2001,2003,2004,2008,2010)andtheFinalFourtwice(1997and2001). SuccessforMcGrawalsohasmeantcoachinggreatplayers.During her illustrious career, the Notre Dame skipper has coached 11All-Americans,including2001consensusNationalPlayeroftheYear Ruth Riley.ShealsohasworkedwithfiveplayerswhohavebeenselectedforUSABasketballNationalTeams,withthoseplay-ersgoingontowinatotalofninemedals(highlightedbyRiley’sgoldwiththe’04U.S.OlympicTeam).Inaddition,McGrawhascoached 22 players who have earned all-conference recognition atotalof48times,including15first-teampickswhohavebeenchosen a total of 27 times, and has helped shape several other nationalawardwinners, namelytwoFrancesPomeroyNaismithawardrecipients(Niele Iveyin2001,Megan Duffyin2006)and2002UnitedStatesBasketballWritersAssociation (USBWA)NationalFreshmanoftheYearJacqueline Batteast. Another sign of McGraw’s success has been her ability to prepare her players for the next level. No less than 21 Notre Damecagershavegoneontoplayprofessionally(domesticallyoroverseas),includingninewhoeitherhavebeendraftedorsignedasfreeagentswithWNBAteams.Thepastdecadehasseenthegreatest influxof Irish talent into theWNBA,withsevenNotreDame players having been selected in the league’s annual draft since2001.Fourofthoseplayers—Riley,Ivey,Kelley Siemon and Ericka Haney—werestartersonthe’01IrishNCAAcham-pionshipteam,andfiveoftherecentIrishWNBAdraftees(Riley,Ivey,Batteast,DuffyandCharel Allen)earnedAll-Americastatusduring their careers at Notre Dame.
