NOTRE DAME CHURCH HOUSTON, TEXAS MAY 8, 2016 From the Deacon Following the Synod on the Family which was held in Rome in recent times, the Pope issued an Apostolic Exhortation on the outcome of the gathering of bishops. Its title: “The Joy of Love” says much about the bishop’s approach to trying to formulate answers for some of the many challenges facing the human family in our modern world. We read: “The Joy of Love experienced by families is also the joy of the church.” It was noted that even in the difficult times we live in today and in the experience of the many challenges facing couples as they try to form a new family unit, “the desire to marry and form a family remains vibrant, especially among young people, and this is an inspiration for the Church.” (Art: 1) Working with so many couples preparing for marriage as I do, these words give all of us hope for the future of our Church and society in general. It is fitting as well that today being Mother’s Day, we reflect for a moment on the words of this latest document from Rome as its addresses the role of mothers and their importance to the family: The Joy of Love states: “A society without mothers would be dehumanized, for mothers are always, even in the worst of times, witnesses to tenderness, dedication and moral strength. Mothers often communicate the deepest meaning of religious practice in the first prayers and acts of devotion that their children learn…Without mothers, not only would there be no new faithful, but the faith itself would lose a good part of its simple and profound warmth…Dear mothers: thank you! Thank you for what you are in the family and for what you give to the Church and the world.” (Art: 174) We owe each of our mothers an unending debt of gratitude. We thank God for each of you. My mother went to heaven a number of years ago but I know that I could not be the person that I am today had it not been for her care and love which guided me through my youth and teen years. I suspect that I gave her a number of the gray hairs which adorned her head but she never complained. Each strand was a badge of honor given to her for her selfless acts of love shown to me and my siblings. May all of the women we honor today be held in the highest esteem and may God continue to bless each one of you today and always. Happy Mother’s Day!! NOTRE DAME CHURCH HOUSTON, TEXAS MAY 8, 2016
From the Deacon Following the Synod on the Family which was held in
Rome in recent times, the Pope issued an Apostolic
Exhortation on the outcome of the gathering of bishops.
Its title: “The Joy of Love” says much about the
bishop’s approach to trying to formulate answers for
some of the many challenges facing the human family in
our modern world.
We read: “The Joy of Love experienced by families is
also the joy of the church.” It was noted that even in the
difficult times we live in today and in the experience of
the many challenges facing couples as they try to form a
new family unit, “the desire to marry and form a family
remains vibrant, especially among young people, and
this is an inspiration for the Church.” (Art: 1) Working
with so many couples preparing for marriage as I do,
these words give all of us hope for the future of our
Church and society in general.
It is fitting as well that today being Mother’s Day, we
reflect for a moment on the words of this latest
document from Rome as its addresses the role of
mothers and their importance to the family: The Joy of
Love states:
“A society without mothers would be dehumanized, for
mothers are always, even in the worst of times,
witnesses to tenderness, dedication and moral strength.
Mothers often communicate the deepest meaning of
religious practice in the first prayers and acts of
devotion that their children learn…Without mothers,
not only would there be no new faithful, but the faith
itself would lose a good part of its simple and profound
warmth…Dear mothers: thank you! Thank you for
what you are in the family and for what you give to the
Church and the world.” (Art: 174)
We owe each of our mothers an unending debt of
gratitude. We thank God for each of you. My mother
went to heaven a number of years ago but I know that I
could not be the person that I am today had it not been
for her care and love which guided me through my
youth and teen years. I suspect that I gave her a
number of the gray hairs which adorned her head but
she never complained. Each strand was a badge of
honor given to her for her selfless acts of love shown to
me and my siblings.
May all of the women we honor today be held in the
highest esteem and may God continue to bless each one
of you today and always. Happy Mother’s Day!!

Certainly, to grow in holiness and in one’s prayer life. In May we especially honor Mary for many reasons: Mary is Jesus mother. She is the first and most perfect disciple. She’s your mother. She loves you more than you can ever imagine. Not only is she Mother, but she also is Advocate, Helper, Benefactress and Mediatrix.
