Year Four Chickens For the past two weeks the Year Four students have explored
the Science unit, “Lifecycles” through the wonder and
excitement of hatching chickens. Each Year Four class had an
incubator with ten eggs set at 37.7 degrees. In less than a day
several eggs hatched and within three days we had twenty
chickens. An impressive one hundred per cent success rate,
thanks to Dan Watts expert intervention to assist two or three
which found “cracking out” just too tiring!
It was very special to watch an egg vibrating, then a crack and a
foot, head or beak appear. The students have kept detailed “Chicken Diaries” noting what
they have observed each day as the chickens develop. In recent days the chickens have had
their first outdoor experiences, as the students in small groups have watched the chickens
begin to flutter their wings and explore their carefully enclosed boundaries.
Along with lots of “chicken love” students have measured many facets of a chicken.
Congratulations to Haley, Sophie and Angeline for the following detailed measurements of
their chicken.

As we prepare to farewell our mini roosters, we welcome the chance to keep our hens
which are such an integral part of the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program.
SAKG News Students in Years Three and Four have been enjoying cooking and eating delicious fare in
the kitchen as part of the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program. Using ingredients
sourced from their harvest in the garden session, students led by the kitchen co-ordinator
Carolina, cut, preserve, cook, serve and eat a wide variety of fresh fruit, vegetables and
herbs. This week’s delicious platter proudly held by Jamieson includes freshly made yoghurt
cheese, plum chutney made in the kitchen classes last year, oven dried apples, rosemary
crackers and flatbread.
We value the many
parents who assist with
the program and
welcome any other
parents, relatives or
friends who may be
interested in
volunteering in the
sessions on a Monday or
Tuesday to contact any
of the Year Three or Four
Teachers.
