TODAY’S READINGS

First Reading — Shout for joy! Sing joyfully! Be glad and exult! The LORD, your God, is in your midst, a mighty savior (Zephaniah 3:14-18a).

Psalm — Cry out with joy and gladness: for among you is the great and Holy One of Israel (Isaiah 12).

Second Reading — Rejoice! The Lord is near. Make your requests known to God (Philippians 4:4-7).

Gospel — John tells his hearers to share their possessions with the needy; be honest; do not threaten or accuse others falsely (Luke 3:10-18).

T his week we celebrate the Third Sunday of Advent. The need for the Prince of Peace grows greater every day. Today the reading from the Prophet Isaiah and St. Paul tell us sing joyful songs to God and turn

away from fear. We are to present our needs to God and God will give us what we need. In the Gospel John the Baptist goes farther and tells us to let charity be our guiding principle and not fear. We are to share our surplus coats, feed those who are hungry, and be content with our lives. John tells us we are to bully no one. I encourage everyone to reflect on these readings this week in light of statements made by some of those looking to be elected president. The present rhetoric of the candidates calls us to live in fear. Fear of immigrants, refugees, Muslims, and other races. Rather then embrace those who are different from us we are now being called to exclude and ostracize them. If we listen to these candidates we are to bully everyone and trust no one. Charity is to be replaced by war and violence. This is not Christian and it is not American. Should we forget, history reminds us of the rise of the Nazis in Germany, Fascists in Italy and dictators throughout history. Their rhetoric and leadership led to death

and war. Jesus calls us to be light in the presence of those who seek change through violence. Those who incite violence and prejudice through their words will be just as accountable as those who act on it. May the opening prayer of the Advent season be our theme, “may we run to meet the Christ, doing works of righteousness and charity.” This Wednesday, December 16th the St. Kieran Religious Education program will have its last class before the Christmas Holiday. On that evening there will be an Advent Evening prayer with the children. Parents and parishioners are invited to join the children for the prayer that begins at 7:00 PM. Classes will resume for Religious Education on January 6, 2016. This Thursday, December 17th we will have our last Advent Evening prayer. Please join us for this time of prayerful reflection on God’s goodness and blessing. Thanks to Teri Klopp, the religious education teachers, children and volunteers who helped clean the church last week. The altar hasn’t looked this shiny in years. Now our house is ready for company! Finally, don’t forget to check the bulletin for the Christmas Season mass schedules. Invite your family and friends to join us for the upcoming holidays.

Parish News & Events

Dear Friends, Hopefully, I will see you at our parent resource meeting this Wednesday, December 16. Deacon Emil Vasek will lead a discussion on Advent practices and traditions at 6:30 p.m. in the church, then we will have Advent prayer with the children at 7:00 p.m., followed by hot chocolate and cookies in Crawford Hall. All are invited—not only current R.E. parents! Enjoy this week’s excerpt from “Everyday Wonders,” by Connie Clark, published by Twenty-Third Publications.

Have a peaceful Advent, Teri Klopp

I WILL FIND YOU

“Hail, full of grace! The Lord is with you.” Luke 1:28

“It had been an extremely bad day. Alone in a strange city, I stopped in a Catholic church. To my surprise, I ran into an old friend. Christine didn’t live anywhere near there—how is it that she happened to be at this church at this exact moment? I’m sure she didn’t expect me to burst into tears, but I did, and I’ve never forgotten the look on her kind, loving face—never. I’m sure she was sent that day by the mom who watches over us all. No matter where you are, any time you make a decision to go to a church, you will always find a friend there. My hope and prayer for you, dear parent, is that your children know this too.

Family Prayer

Parent: Mary, hear our prayer and send it to your son, Jesus. All: Mother Mary, hold us in your loving hands. Parent: Mary, protect our family. Keep us united always. All: Mother Mary, hold us in your loving hands. Amen.

Advent Action

Plan today to take your kids to church on a day other than Sunday. Let everyone see the statues, candles, and the altar up close. Touch and explain things if you can. Get your kids comfortable here. After all, it’s God’s home and yours too.”

Excerpt from “Everyday Wonders,” by Connie Clark, published by Twenty-Third Publications.

BLUE CHRISTMAS 2015

For some people the idea of a ‘merry’ Christmas is beyond imagining. The death of a loved one, brokenness in family relationships, coping with the loss of a job, living with a limiting disease – all these human situations make holiday gatherings painful and not an easy occasion for celebra-tion. In some ways, the struggle with darkness and grief faced by those living with loss is also a struggle to find a reason to have hope that God can truly be ‘Emmanuel’ and with us still. It is because of this very human truth and reality that our Church will be open and available for prayer in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament on Sunday, December 19th, beginning at 11 a.m. and ending at 1 p.m. with a simple prayer service of comfort and consolation. If this will be an especially ‘blue’ Christmas for you, consider stopping by and creating a time of peace for yourself in the silence, recalled memories, and the shared prayer of this community. Let it be an act of faith on your part that release, renewal and hope can be your Christmas miracle, and that with God all things are possible. Father Tom K.

Keep watch, dear Lord, with those who work

or watch or weep this night, and give your angels charge over those who sleep.

Tend the sick, Lord Christ; give rest to the weary, bless the dying, soothe the suffering, pity the afflicted,

shield the joyous; and all for your love’s sake.
