AUGUST 11, 2019 19TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME NOTES FROM FATHER TOM Symbols of our Altar Rail: The New Testament A couple weeks ago I wrote about the 10 Commandments symbol, found on the furthest left of our altar rail. If you look on the futhest right, you will find the correspond- ing symbol: a book with the words “Tolle Legge” and a Cross behind it. Whereas the Tablets are a sym- bol of the Old Covenant, the book with a cross is clearly a symbol of the New Testament. The words “Tolle Legge” are Latin for: “Take up and Read” this is what St. Au- gustine heard children singing, he picked up the New Testament and was converted by the verses: “Not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying, but put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh to fulfill the lusts thereof” Rom 13:13-14 St. Augustine writes: “No further would I read; nor needed I: for in- stantly at the end of this sentence, by a light as it were of serenity infused into my heart, all the dark- ness of doubt vanished away.” 1 The New Testament comes from the Latin “testamentum,” a word that in the secular world means: the legal disposition a man makes of his goods after his death. But early writers of the Scriptures translated the Hebrew word “berith” as “testamentum” mean- ing: “a pact, an alliance, especially the alliance of Yahweh with Isra- el,” 2 more commonly referred to as “covenant.” Jesus spoke this word at the Last Supper, when he picked up the chalice and said: “This cup is the new covenant “testamentum” in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” 1 Corinthians 11:25 Jesus used the words “new testament” for the covenant estab- lished by Himself between God and the world, “and this is called ‘new’ as opposed to that of which Moses was the mediator.” 3 Later the name “Testament” was given to the collection of sacred texts describing the old and new covenants i.e. Old and New Testament. The Catechism, quoting Vatican II, speaks how God out of His goodness chose to reveal Himself to men in human words: “Indeed the words of God, expressed in the words of men, are in every way like human language, just as the Word of the eternal Father, when he took on himself the flesh of human weakness, became like men.” 4 But: “Through all the words of Sacred Scripture, God speaks only one single Word..” that WORD made flesh which expresses God completely! The Catechism and history teach that by Apostolic Tradition the Church discerned which books make up both the Old and New Testament: the “canon of Scripture.” These include 46 books of the Old Covenant and 27 of the New Covenant. 5 The New Testament contains the “ultimate truth of God’s revela- tion:” Jesus Christ: His actions, teachings, death and glorification, and the begin- nings of His Church under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. The Gospels are at the heart of all the Scrip- tures (both Old and New) because as Vatican II said: they are “the principal source for the life and teaching of the Incarnate Word, our Savior." 6 St. Therese of Lisieux said: “But above all it's the gospels that occupy my mind when I'm at prayer; my poor soul has so many needs, and yet this is the one thing needful. I'm always finding fresh lights there; hidden meanings which had meant nothing to me hitherto.” 7 The symbol of the New Testa- ment reminds us of the power of God’s word: we venerate the Gospels in the liturgy with incense, we meditate and pray with them at home! Now go find the symbol of the book with a cross behind it on our altar rail! 1 Aurelius Augustine, The Confessions of St. Augustine, translated by Edward Pusey. Vol. VII, Part 1. Symbols of our Altar Rail: The New Testament A couple weeks ago I wrote about the 10 Commandments symbol, found on the furthest left of our altar rail. The Catechism and history teach that by Apostolic Tradition the Church discerned which books make up both the Old and New Testament: the “canon of Scripture.” These include 46 books of the Old Covenant and 27 of the New Covenant.5 The New Testament contains the “ultimate truth of God’s revela-tion:” Jesus Christ: His actions, teachings, death and glorification,

We have a wonderful opportunity to purchase a beauti-ful new Missal for use by the congregation at the EF Latin Masses! For nine years, Old St. Patrick has provided the Red Missal booklets at the Traditional Latin Masses, and many of these booklets are showing wear and tear. In addition, our secretary has worked hard to print out handouts with propers and readings for each EF Mass. We would like to replace all this with 100 hardbound copies of the St. Edmund Campion

Missal and Hymnal produced by Corpus Christi Watershed. The Campion Missal is 992 pages, and provides everything necessary for the EF Masses: the Propers and Readings (in Latin and English) for all Sundays, Holy Days, and First Class Feasts. There are 75 traditional, digitally enhanced, art illustrations, to accompany the feasts and times of the liturgical year. Furthermore there are over 100 Mass Photos that help one follow the prayers and ceremonies of both Solemn and Low Mass Ordo. The Missal is also a hymnal: it includes 150 elegant, enduring, traditional Catholic hymns that would expand our current selection in the Adoremus and Old St. Patrick Hymnals. We are hoping to raise $3,600 to purchase 100 copies of the Campion Missal at $35.99 each (free delivery) for congregational use. If you are willing and able to contribute toward this special St. Edmund missal project, please indicate so on your check to Old St. Patrick, and drop it in the collection basket or at the parish office. We have already raised $1,985 towards this effort, so please contribute what you are able so we can place the order. If you would like your own personal copy of this missal, please donate at least $35.99 to cover the cost of one personal copy, indicate ‘private copy’ on your check and then email Pam Wiitala at pwiitala @gmail.com so she can add your name to the list of requested personal copies. The supply of these missals is waning and its distributor does not foresee a future printing, so please do not delay in supporting this worthy effort! For more information on the Edmund Campion Missal visit their webpage at: www.ccwatershed.org/campion

Anyone, 18yrs and older, with a desire to join the choir is encouraged to sign up for a 10 minute “audition” Thursday, Aug 29 from 5pm-7pm. No music experience neces-sary! Mr. Ernesto would simply like you to sing a quick selection and determine your voice. He is willing to work with voices of all levels! He is seeking people enthusiastic about the Church’s Sacred Music tradition, who would like to learn to sing: Palestrina, Victoria, Mozart, Mendels-sohn, and other beautiful composers. Those interested need to be willing to commit to once a week rehearsals and choir at the 10:30am Mass.
