Heritage Happening May 2018 HPCA Board Meeting April 19th at 10:00 am at the Clubhouse Note from the President By the time you receive this newsletter, the major repairs and modernization of the HP Community will have been completed. There are however, still items to be worked on, for example, a new gazebo for Serenity pond, and a few other smaller projects. The work that has been done required a great deal of financial planning, securing bidding on contracts, monitoring the work and the efforts of the Board, the Grounds Committee, and our excellent office staff. The unusually harsh weather caused delays along with the problems unearthed once the construction began. Below you will find a list of the projects that have been completed as of April. 1. The retaining walls around the big pond are completed and the walking path has been poured. 2. The Pool is Open!! We have a new pool company this year, Triangle Aquatics. Underneath the lip of the pool has been painted and the cracking grout has been caulked. The sand and laterals in the pump room have been replaced along with the pool heater and multiport valves on the sand filters. 3. The Clubhouse concrete on both sides of the portico has been replaced and the walkway to the kitchen is completed. 4. We authorized Triangle Pond to fill a hole in the Wetlands that formed behind one of the inlet conduits with clay and compact. 5. The cabinet doors where the sound and cable equipment are stored have been changed to mesh to prevent overheating. 6. The water fountains at the pool have been repaired. 7. The weather stripping on four of the exterior doors in the Clubhouse have been replaced. 8. All of the back-patio lights have been replaced. 9. We have new chairs in the Library and also, new pool chairs have been purchased for the pool. Chair Yoga for
Men & Women The benefits of Yoga are widely known. They include promoting relaxation, reducing stress and improving mental outlook. So it should come as no surprise that millions of Americans are now “jumping on the Yoga bandwagon.” Yoga comes from a Sanskrit word meaning to unite or join together. In a sense mind-body awareness joins with breathing awareness, thus increasing the benefits of this primary source of life. Most of us just take shallow breaths, using the upper part of our lungs. Deep breathing, as it is taught in Yoga, goes much deeper. It helps increase blood circulation in the body, reduces pain in arthritic joints, balances movements, provides energy and causes many other positive changes in our lives. Smita Shah teaches the Heritage Pines Chair Yoga class, which is free to all on Friday mornings from 9:45 to 10:45. All Heritage Pines residents (men and women) are welcome to attend.
Live and Learn
Our May Live and Learn will feature a police officer from the
Cary Police Department. The program will provide information about services the police department has in place that impact senior citizens and keeping our community safe. The program will be on Wednesday, May 23 at 10:00 am and the cost is $2.00. Refreshments will be served. The sign-up deadline is Monday, May 14. Movie of the Month A Room With A View takes place during the Edwardian era when Lucy Honeychurch Helena Bonham Carter and her chaperon, Charlotte Bartlett (Maggie Smith), arrive in Florence. They are troubled by the fact that they don't have rooms with a view. Later that night at supper, fellow guests Mr. Emerson and his son George offer to exchange their rooms for those of Lucy and Charlotte. This exchange is the first of many events where Lucy and Charlotte are involved in the plans of Mr. Emerson, George and other guests from the hotel they are staying at. Lucy and George realize their passionate feelings for one another when George kisses Lucy, and it is not a simple matter of boy likes girl, but boy likes girl and girl is engaged to another. Now Lucy begins to doubt her feelings for her husband to be and gets caught up in a web of lies to convince herself, George and everyone else that she isn't in love with George. Join us on May 27 at 6 pm and see how it all turns out in the end.

Grounds Committee Report
We have had some leadership changes on our Brightview Team. Jamie Roberson has been promoted to Account Manager and Earl Ivey has replaced him as our onsite supervisor.
Thanks to all of you who attended the Turf and Irrigation Seminar provided by Brightview on April 12th. Attendance was at an all time low, which was a disappointment to the Grounds Committee since so many of you had indicated on the recent irriga-tion questionnaire that you would like to attend such a seminar. The information presented was pertinent and meant to improve the look of our lawns while saving us money on watering costs. It is but one of many free services that BrightView provides to this community which perhaps goes unnoticed and underappreciated.
Another example of this would be how the Bright-View crew responded when, shortly after the planting of our entrance flowerbeds with pansies, they were quickly eaten by either deer or rabbits. BrightView replaced all the pansies for FREE and installed netted cages to prevent the same thing from happening again. They often go out of their way to better serve our community.
Remember to routinely look at the Landscaper Bulletin Boards regarding BOTH Mowing and Pruning (preferably BEFORE calling in a “concern”). There are also photos of the weeds NOT COVERED in our contract.
Do watch for the annual letter from the Town of Cary regarding sprinkler back flow annual assembly requirements. The program typically begins early June.
If you notice a sidewalk in need of repair, please call the Public Works Department to report the location at 919 469-4090. Likewise, when you notice a street light is burnt out, jot down the number on the post and report it to Duke Progress Energy at 800 419-6356 or use their web site: duke-energy.com/progress.
Once again this year the entire community will be treated with lime. We do this to maintain the current acidity of our soil. We can only afford to do it once a year. If you feel your lawn needs more lime it is your responsibility to administer and pay for further applications.
Lastly, thanks to all of you who heeded our suggestions.
The Grounds Committee
Please Do Not Feed the Geese Residents have been seen feeding the geese, one in particular in front of the Clubhouse. More than once the geese have pooped on the concrete under the Portico only to be tracked into the Clubhouse. We pay a service for humane goose control to keep the mess away from high traffic areas.
By feeding the geese you are undermining all of our efforts.
Please Stop!!
HOME SECURITY
Please remember to keep doors and windows locked, garage doors closed, bushes trimmed below window height and to install motion sensor lighting near doors where appropriate. The contact information for the Cary Police Department is as follows: •For non-emergencies, call 919-469-4012 •www.nextdoor.com to keep in touch with
what is going on in our neighborhood •www.maps.townofcary.org for everything
we need to know about what is going on in Cary
Officers are available to check individual homes for security issues. Call them at the above number.
Did you know???
You can order replacement vinyl mailbox posts from the Clubhouse office.

Social Committee News
We want to all of you who have helped to make our events so far this year a big success! The purpose of the Social Committee is not only to plan social and educational events, but encourage others to organize and lead events. We need more volunteers and groups to schedule and plan events to help make Heritage Pines an active and fun place to live! We can only accomplish this with participation from the community and your willingness to help us. Currently, we do not have a chairperson for the July 4
th event. We will
be unable to have this event and celebrate our nation’s birthday unless folks in our community step up. We hope each one of you will consider helping to organize and lead an event in the future. Thank you to each of you and the activity groups that have scheduled and led events; it is very much appreciated by all of us!
SAVE THE DATE……Be sure to sign up for our Memorial Day program on Monday, May 28
th. Memorial Day is a special day
set aside for remembering those who died serving our country. On June 24
th, the
Heritage Pines choral group will be entertaining us with their annual spring/summer program. Be sure to save the dates!
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT….Our March Live and Learn speaker had a family emergency and was unable to join us; however, we enjoyed a fun social hour with refreshments and a slide show of previous events. The Spring Fling on Saturday, March 24
th was a big success with many of
our Heritage Pines grandparents and their grandchildren enjoying activities and an Easter egg hunt. Thank you to the chair-persons and their committees for volunteer-ing to help!
