knowledge test can take this course.

HOW TO GET A PERMIT OR LICENSE IN YOUR STATE
Alabama Permit & License
Want to get your Alabama driver’s license? Aceable’s Alabama Permit Test Prep can help you

Important: Drivers ed is NOT a requirement for getting an Alabama license. Applicants under
the age of 18 must either complete an SDEapproved course OR have a parent certify that they
completed 30 hours of supervised driving. Aceable’s Alabama Permit Test Prep is a mobile

HOW TO GET YOUR ALABAMA DRIVER'S LICENSE ( AGES 1517)
1. Enroll in a stateapproved drivers ed course if you choose to do so. You can skip this step
if you want to do 30 certified hours of driving practice instead.
2. Take a vision test and written knowledge test at your local DPS (Department of Public
Safety) office. You’ll need to bring original or certified copies of your U.S. birth
certificate and Social Security card, and proof of school enrollment or graduation. Find
examples of acceptable documents here. 3. Receive your Learner License at your DPS office. The fee is $5 for testing and $36.25 for
the license.
4. Carry your Learner License for six months while you get behindthewheel practice with
your parent or other licensed adult who is 21 or older. If you chose to practice for 30
hours instead of taking an official drivers ed course, your parent or guardian must sign a
verification form from the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.
5. Pass the behindthewheel driving test to get your Restricted Driver License. If you’re 16
years old, you’ll need to bring your parent or guardian. Contact the DPS office by phone
or online beforehand to schedule an appointment. Remember to bring your own
insured vehicle for the test.
6. Curfews and passenger restrictions placed on your Restricted Driver License will be
removed when you turn 18. You can also apply for an unrestricted license at age 17 as
long as you’ve held your restricted license for at least six months. Congrats!
HOW TO GET YOUR ALABAMA DRIVER'S LICENSE (AGE 18 AND UP)
1. Pass a vision test and knowledge test at your local DPS office. Bring your Social Security
card and at least 2 forms of ID. Find examples of acceptable documents here. You’ll also have to pay a $5 testing fee and $36.25 license fee to the DPS. If you’re 18 years old, you
will also submit proof that you’re enrolled in school or have already graduated.
2. Pass your road test. You’ll need to have a licensed driver with you and an insured vehicle
that will pass inspection.

Arizona Permit & License

HOW TO GET YOUR ARIZONA DRIVER'S LICENSE (AGES 1517)
1. Gather up your paperwork to bring to the Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) office. You’ll
need to bring the following: proof of your identity and lawful presence in the U.S., Social
Security card, and payment for the MVD’s $7 fee. Find examples of acceptable
documents here. You’ll also need to have your application signed by your parent(s) or guardian in front of a notary or MVD agent.
2. Get your Instruction Permit by passing a vision test and knowledge test at your local
MVD office. You must be at least 15 and ½ years old.
3. Carry your Instruction Permit for at least six months while you rack up 30
behindthewheel practice hours with your parent or other approved, licensed driver
who is at least 21 years old. Make sure 10 of those hours are at night. Your driving
supervisor will sign a form saying that you met the requirement.
4. Optional step: Complete a MVDapproved drivers ed course. You can choose to take an
official course OR have your parent certify that you completed 30 hours of supervised
driving.
5. Get ready for your road test! You must be at least 16 years old and have your parent or
guardian with you. Gather all the documents you’ll need to bring: your permit,
identification documents your brought for your permit application, certification that you
completed either a drivers ed course OR 30 hours of supervised driving, and payment
for the $25 fee.
6. Pass the behindthewheel driving test to get your Graduated License.
7. The restrictions placed on your Graduated License will be removed once you’ve had it
for six months or when you turn 18, whichever comes first. You can keep using your
Graduated License (with full privileges) until it expires, or you can trade it in for a regular
Class D License.

HOW TO GET YOUR GEORGIA DRIVER'S LICENSE (AGES 1516)
1. Get your Instructional Permit by passing a vision test and knowledge test at your local

protect teen drivers.
3. Carry your Instructional Permit for at least 12 months while you rack up 40
behindthewheel practice hours with your parent or other licensed adult who is 21 or
older.
4. Pass the behindthewheel driving test to get your Intermediate License. You must be at
least 16 years old. Bring these things: ADAP (Alcohol and Drug Awareness Program)
certificate, certificate of attendance notarized by your school, your permit, drivers ed
certificate, completed Parent Guide from the onroad lessons, vehicle with current
insurance and registration, and your parent or guardian.
5. Keep your Intermediate license for at least 12 months without any major traffic
convictions. Curfews and passenger restrictions will be lifted when you turn 18. At that
point, your license becomes a full driver license.

HOW TO GET YOUR GEORGIA DRIVER'S LICENSE (AGE 17 AND UP)
1. Get your Instructional Permit by passing a vision test and knowledge test at your local

Indiana Permit & License

HOW TO GET YOUR INDIANA DRIVER'S LICENSE (AGES 1520)
1. Decide if you want to take a stateapproved drivers ed course. It’s not required, but
enrolling in a certified course enables you to apply for your Learner’s Permit at age 15
instead of 16. It also allows you to get your probationary license up to six months
earlier.
2. Gather up your paperwork to bring to the BMV. Get your minor affidavit and Agreement
of Financial Liability signed by your parent or legal guardian. You’ll also need to bring a
Certificate of Driver Education Enrollment (if you’re 15 years old), proof of your identity,
Social Security number, Indiana residence, and lawful presence in the U.S. Find
examples of acceptable documents here. Bring a check or money order for $9.50 for the
BMV fee.
3. Get your Learner’s Permit by passing a vision test and knowledge test at your local BMV
license branch.
4. Carry your Learner’s Permit for at least 180 days while you rack up 50 behindthewheel
practice hours with your parent or other licensed adult who is 25 or older. Make sure 10

of those hours are at night. Keep track of your practice on the Log of Supervised Driving,
which must be signed by your driving supervisor if you’re under 18.
5. Schedule your road test ahead of time online or over the phone. You must be at least 16
and 270 days old. Gather all the documents you’ll need to bring: your permit, signed Log
of Supervised Driving, appropriate payment for the fee ($17.50), and proof of drivers ed
completion (if you’re 16 years and 90 to 270 days old).
6. Pass the behindthewheel driving test to get your Probationary License.
7. Your Probationary License will expire 30 days after your 21st birthday. At that point, you
can get your regular driver license without curfew and passenger restrictions.
HOW TO GET YOUR INDIANA DRIVER'S LICENSE (AGE 21 AND UP)
1. Get your Learner’s Permit by passing a vision test and knowledge test at your local BMV
license branch. You’ll need to bring proof of your identity, Social Security number, lawful
presence in the U.S, and two forms of proof of your Indiana residence. Find examples of
acceptable documents here. The BMV’s permit fee is $9.50.
2. Carry your permit while you practice driving under the supervision of a licensed adult
who is 21 or older.

Iowa Permit & License

HOW TO GET YOUR IOWA DRIVER'S LICENSE (AGES 1417)
1. Take a stateapproved 38hour drivers ed course.
2. Pass a vision test and written knowledge test at your local driver license office. You’ll
need to bring a primary form of ID, proof of your Iowa residency, proof of your Social

Security number, and a parent or legal guardian to sign your application (or the Parent’s
Written Consent form). Find examples of acceptable documents here. 3. Receive your Instruction Permit. The state fee is $6.
4. Carry your Instruction Permit for 12 months while you get behindthewheel practice
with your parent or other approved, licensed adult who is at least 21 (if immediately
related to you) or 25 years old (if not related to you). You will need 20 hours of
supervised practice, including two hours of night driving.
5. Pass the behindthewheel driving test to get your Intermediate License. You must keep
a clean driving record during the six months leading up to the test and be at least 16
years old. If you’re between 14½ and 16, you may qualify to get a Minor School License
that allows you to drive to and from school without supervision.
6. Curfews and passenger restrictions placed on your Intermediate License will be
removed when you turn 18. You can get a regular Driver License at age 17 as long as you
have A) held your Intermediate License for at least 12 months (with a clean driving
record), and B) completed 10 hours (two at night) of supervised driving with your
Intermediate License. Congrats!
HOW TO GET YOUR IOWA DRIVER'S LICENSE (AGE 18 AND UP)
1. Take a stateapproved drivers ed course. You can take either the 38hour course that
minors take OR a 6hour PreLicensing Course.
2. Pass a vision test and knowledge test at your local driver license office to get your
Instruction Permit. Bring documents to prove your identity. Find examples of acceptable
forms of ID here. You’ll also have to pay a $2032 license fee to the Department of
Transportation.
3. Get at least eight hours of behindthewheel training. Practice with a licensed adult until
you’re confident in your driving skills.
4. Take the onroad skills test. When you pass, you can switch to a regular Driver License

Massachusetts Permit & License

HOW TO GET YOUR MASSACHUSETTS DRIVER'S LICENSE (AGES 1617)

school. It should include 30 hours of classroom instruction and 18 hours of incar
instruction (12 hours behind the wheel and 6 hours of observation).
2. When you’re at least 16, take a vision test and 25question knowledge test at your local
RMV (Registry of Motor Vehicles). You’ll need to bring an original document proving
your date of birth, Social Security card, and a permit application signed by your parent
or guardian. Find examples of acceptable documents here. 3. Receive your Learner’s Permit at your RMV full service office. The fee is $30.
4. Carry your Learner’s Permit while you get behindthewheel practice with your parent or
other licensed adult who is 21 or older.
5. Pass the behindthewheel driving test and pay the RMV fee ($35) to get your Junior
Operator License. You must be at least 16½. Contact the RMV office by phone or online
beforehand to schedule an appointment. Remember to bring your “sponsor” (driving
supervisor) and a registered, inspected, and insured vehicle.
6. Curfews and passenger restrictions placed on your Junior Operator License will be
removed when you turn 18. At that point, you have full driving privileges. Congrats!
HOW TO GET YOUR MASSACHUSETTS DRIVER'S LICENSE (AGE 18 AND UP)

HOW TO GET YOUR MINNESOTA DRIVER'S LICENSE (AGES 1517)

2. Gather up your paperwork to bring to the Department of Public Safety (DPS) office.
You’ll need to bring the following: application signed by your parent or guardian, proof
of your identity and age, and payment for the DPS fee ($14.25). Find examples of
acceptable ID documents here. 3. Get your Instruction Permit by passing a vision test and knowledge test at your local DPS
office. You must be at least 15 years old.
4. Carry your Instruction Permit while you rack up 50 or more behindthewheel practice
hours with your parent or other licensed driver who is at least 21 years old. Make sure
15 of those hours are at night. Keep a log of your practice times. If your primary driving
supervisor takes the optional 90minute parent class, you can do 40 hours of practice
instead of 50.
5. You’re ready to schedule your road test once you’ve had your permit for six months
(with a clean driving record) and are at least 16. Gather all the documents you’ll need to
bring: your permit, proof that you completed classroom AND behindthewheel drivers
ed, your supervised driving hours log, and an application signed by your parent.
6. Pass the behindthewheel driving test and pay the DPS fee ($17.25) to get your
Provisional License.
7. You can switch to a regular driver license when you turn 18. You may qualify to get your
restrictions lifted earlier, at age 17. You must hold your Provisional License for 12
months straight without any convictions involving alcohol, controlled substances, or
crashing your vehicle. Only one conviction for a moving violation that is not
crashrelated is allowed. All you have to do is complete an application, pay the required
fee, and have your parent or guardian certify that you've had at least 10 hours of
supervised driving with your Provisional License.
HOW TO GET YOUR MINNESOTA DRIVER'S LICENSE (AGE 18 AND UP)
1. Get your paperwork together. You’ll need to bring these things to the DPS office:
complete application, proof of your identity, Social Security number, proof of lawful
presence in the U.S, and payment for the fee ($14.25). Find examples of acceptable
documents here. 2. Visit your DPS office to take the vision screening and written knowledge test. When you
pass, you’ll be issued an Instruction Permit.

3. Practice driving under the supervision of a licensed adult. You must hold your permit for
six months if you’re 18. If you’re 19 or older, three months is the minimum.
4. Pass a road skills test and pay the DPS fee ($26.25) to get your regular driver license. If
you’re under 21, your driver license will expire on your 21st birthday. Congrats!

New York Permit & License

of those hours are at night and 10 hours take place in moderate to heavy traffic.
4. Schedule your road test online or over the phone. Gather all the documents you’ll need
to bring: your permit, PreLicensing Course certificate (MV278) OR school drivers ed
certificate (MV285), signed Certification of Supervised Driving (MV262), and a
registered and inspected vehicle.
5. Pass the behindthewheel driving test to get your Junior License.
6. The curfew and passenger restrictions of your Junior License will be lifted when you turn
18. At that point, you can get your regular driver license.

HOW TO GET YOUR NORTH CAROLINA DRIVER'S LICENSE (AGES 1517)
1. Enroll in a stateapproved drivers ed course. When you complete it, you’ll get a Driving
Education Certificate.
2. Gather up your paperwork to bring to the DMV office. You’ll need to bring the following:
Driving Eligibility Certificate (proof of school attendance), Driver Education Certificate,
two documents proving your identity, and your Social Security card. Find examples of
acceptable documents here. Bring a check, cash, or money order for $15 for the DMV
fee.
3. Get your Limited Learner Permit by passing a vision test and knowledge test at your
local DMV office.
4. Carry your Limited Learner’s Permit for at least a year while you rack up 60
behindthewheel practice hours with your parent or other approved adult who has
been licensed for at least five years. Make sure 10 of those hours are at night. Keep
track of your practice on the Driving Log (DL4A), which must be signed by your driving
supervisor. A maximum of 10 hours per week will count towards the requirement.
5. Schedule your road test ahead of time online or over the phone. You must be at least 16
years old. Gather all the documents you’ll need to bring: your permit, completed Driving
Log (DL4A), and proof of liability insurance coverage.

6. Pass the behindthewheel driving test to get your Limited Provisional License. If you
keep it for at least six months without being convicted of a moving violation or seat
belt/mobile phone infraction, you can upgrade to a Full Provisional License with fewer
restrictions.
HOW TO GET YOUR NORTH CAROLINA DRIVER'S LICENSE (AGE 18 AND UP)
1. Get your paperwork together. You’ll need to bring these things to the DMV: proof of
your identity, Social Security number, lawful presence in the U.S, liability insurance, and
North Carolina residency. Find examples of acceptable documents here. 2. Visit your Driver License Office to take the vision, knowledge, and driving skills tests.
You’ll need to pass all three to get your driver license. Aced them? You’re done!
Alternatively, you may also choose to get your Learner Permit ($15 DMV fee) first to
practice supervised driving before taking the driving skills test. Proceed to steps 3 and 4
if you choose the Permit route.

Ohio Permit & License
Want to get your Ohio driver’s license? Aceable’s Ohio Permit Test Prep can help you ace the

HOW TO GET YOUR OHIO DRIVER'S LICENSE (AGES 1517)
1. Pass a vision test and knowledge test at your local Driver License Exam Station. You’ll
need to bring proof of your identity, date of birth, Social Security number, legal
presence in the U.S, and Ohio residence. Find examples of acceptable documents here. 2. Get your Temporary Instruction Permit Identification Card (TIPIC) and Temporary Permit
packet at your deputy registrar. Bring $22 for the fee and your parent or guardian to
sign your application.
3. Sign up for a BMVapproved 24hour drivers ed course online or in a classroom. When
you complete the first two hours, the school will send you a Certificate of Enrollment.
This allows you to go to a driving school and get your required eight hours of onroad

practice with a driving instructor. Finish the drivers ed course to get your Certificate of
Completion.
4. Carry your TIPIC for at least six months while you rack up 50 behindthewheel practice
hours with your parent or other licensed adult who is 21 or older. Make sure 10 of those
hours are at night!
5. Pass the behindthewheel driving test and pay the BMV fee ($23 to $24.25) to get your
Probationary License. Contact the Driver License Exam Station beforehand to schedule
an appointment. You must be at least 16 years old.
6. Restrictions placed on your Probationary License will be lifted when you turn 18. At that
point, it becomes a full driver license.
HOW TO GET YOUR OHIO DRIVER'S LICENSE (AGE 18 AND UP)
1. Pass a vision test and knowledge test at your local Driver License Exam Station. You’ll
need to bring proof of your identity, date of birth, Social Security number, legal
presence in the U.S, and Ohio residence. Find examples of acceptable documents here. 2. Get your Temporary Instruction Permit Identification Card (TIPIC) and Temporary Permit
packet at your deputy registrar. Bring $22 for the fee.
3. Carry your TIPIC while you practice driving under the supervision of a licensed adult who
is 21 or older.

Pennsylvania Permit & License

practice tests designed to prepare you for the Pennsylvania written knowledge exam.
Important: This is NOT a stateapproved course. Pennsylvanian drivers are not required to take drivers ed, but they can take a PennDOTapproved course in order to have certain license

HOW TO GET YOUR PENNSYLVANIA DRIVER'S LICENSE (AGES 1617)
1. Decide if you want to take a PennDOTapproved drivers ed course. It’s not required, but
passing a certified course will enable you to get your driver license restrictions removed
at age 17 instead of 18.

2. Make an appointment at your doctor’s office for a physical. Have your doctor or nurse
practitioner fill out your Medical Qualification Certificate (DL180). You’ll fill out the
reverse side of that form with proof of your identity.
3. Get your Learner’s Permit by passing a vision test and knowledge test at your local
Driver License Center. Get your consent form (DL180TD) signed by your parent or
guardian. You’ll also need to bring the Medical Qualification Certificate (DL180), proof
of your identity, Social Security number, and lawful presence in the U.S. Find examples
of acceptable documents here. Bring a check or money order for the PennDOT fee.
4. Carry your Learner’s Permit for at least six months while you rack up 65
behindthewheel practice hours with your parent or other licensed adult who is 21 or
older. Make sure 10 of those hours are at night and five take place during bad weather.
5. Schedule your road test ahead of time online or over the phone. Gather all the
documents you’ll need to bring: your permit, the parent or guardian certification form
(DL180C), and proof of your vehicle’s registration and inspection.
6. Pass the behindthewheel driving test to get your Junior License.
7. The curfew and passenger restrictions of your Junior License will be lifted when you turn
18. At that point, you can get your regular driver license. Restrictions may be lifted
before you turn 18 if you submit a certificate from an approved drivers ed course, DL59
form, and an affidavit of consent from your parent. You must also have not had any
traffic convictions or atfault crashes within the past 12 months.

Tennessee Permit & License

HOW TO GET YOUR TENNESSEE DRIVER'S LICENSE (AGES 1517)
1. Get your school principal or guidance counselor to sign your school attendance/progress
form (SF1010).
2. Gather up your paperwork to bring to the Driver Services Center. You’ll need to bring
the following: proof of school attendance, two forms of proof of Tennessee residency,
proof of your identity and lawful presence in the U.S., Financial Responsibility/Teenage
Affidavit, and your Social Security card. Find examples of acceptable documents here. Bring payment for the DMV fee, which is $10.50.
3. Get your Learner Permit by passing a vision test and knowledge test at your local Driver
Services Center.
4. Carry your Learner Permit for at least 180 days while you rack up 50 behindthewheel
practice hours with your parent or other licensed driver who is at least 21 years old.
Make sure 10 of those hours are at night. Your driving supervisor will sign a form saying
that you met the requirement.
5. Schedule your road test ahead of time online or over the phone. You must be at least 16
years old. Gather all the documents you’ll need to bring: your permit, certification of
behindthewheel practice (SF1256), and payment for the fee.
6. Pass the behindthewheel driving test to get your Intermediate Restricted License. If
you keep it for at least a year without getting six driving points, causing a traffic
collision, or having a second seat belt violation, you can get an Intermediate
Unrestricted License.
7. When you turn 18, you can trade in your Intermediate License for a regular Class D
driver license.
HOW TO GET YOUR TENNESSEE DRIVER'S LICENSE (AGE 18 AND UP)
1. Get your paperwork together. You’ll need to bring these things to the Driver Services
Center: proof of your identity, Social Security card, proof of lawful presence in the U.S,
and two forms of proof of Tennessee residency. Find examples of acceptable documents
here. 2. Visit your Driver Services Center to take the vision, knowledge, and driving skills tests.
You’ll need to pass all three to get your driver license.
