spent time learning with Professor Karen Starr from Deakin University, whilst the teaching staff focused on the strategies that work with Gifted and Highly Able Students, presented by Dr Leonie Kronborg and Dr Margaret Plunkett.

Throughout the three workshop sessions in the afternoon our staff shared their practice and expertise with others within the network by presenting, facilitating workshops or running network meetings where they shared ideas and resources. I sincerely thank all of our staff for their contribution and approach to learning on the day.

The school captains also took the opportunity to network with their peers throughout the day as well.

Mr Page tells me I need to thank myself and Ms Gayl Shute who formed part of the organising committee with representatives from each of the four schools.

Graduate NewsI recently had the pleasure of catching up with 2013 School Captain, Shirlene Perera. Shirlene has been studying Arts at the University of Melbourne since she graduated, and has had some interesting and varied experiences whilst completing her degree. I thought it worthwhile outlining some of these experiences, to highlight the opportunities and life experiences available to university students and also to highlight that Nossal students are brave, curious, resilient and adventurous.

As part of Shirlene’s second year in a Bachelor of Arts (BA) at the University of Melbourne, she undertook an exchange  program with Melbourne Global Mobility to study for a semester at the University of Birmingham in England. Whilst there she studied subjects that contributed towards her BA. The University of Melbourne provided her with a $2500 scholarship to support the expenses of the trip.

Shirlene lived on campus, in one of the villages where she met students from all over the world (USA, South America, Canada, Europe) and partook in college life including participating in various societies and playing with the Birmingham Lions Women’s basketball team. Whilst there she also travelled with friends and on her own to Dublin, Scotland, Paris as well to other major cities in England.  Shirlene says that it is undoubtedly the best thing she has ever done (so far, I would add).

This year, now that she has returned to the University of Melbourne she is doing something else that challenges her, provides her with a unique opportunity and contributes towards her degree. In Semester 1 of her third year, she is completing an internship with the Victorian Parliament as part of her Politics major.  The program admits 35 students from Monash, Melbourne and Victoria Universities each year. The program began in 1990 and since then there have been around 1000 interns and some of those have gone on to become MPs,

parliamentary officers, journalists, researchers, public and private sector leaders and even our Premier, Daniel Andrews.

She has been assigned a local MP, Hon. Heidi Victoria, the Member for Bayswater and she will work with her on a topic that relates to her portfolio. Shirlene’s task will be to write a 6000 word research report which will be filed in the Victorian Parliamentary Library. She will conduct research, gather data (interviews, talking to stakeholders, research government documents), perform data analysis and compile it in a report format. Her research will be based around whether government funding for tourist attractions affects attendance rates and mobilises tourism.

It was lovely to catch up with Shirlene, to hear her news, and discover some of the wonderful opportunities provided by universities. It is reassuring to know that Nossal graduates are continuing to ‘embrace the challenge’ and make the most of what life presents to them.

Alumni Cocktail Party – a new batch of Old NossaloniansIt was fabulous to see most of the 2015 Graduates here at Nossal on Friday March 18 for the Annual Alumni Cocktail Party. Students and staff had a great time talking about what they are currently doing and reminiscing about the ‘Good Old Days’ at Nossal. Shevin Dissanyake and Mr Page conducted tours of the new facilities and everyone was extremely impressed and extremely jealous. A big thank you to the Alumni organising committee and to Juliea Slywka for organising such a successful evening. We hope that the event signifies the start of an ongoing network and relationship for last year’s cohort of graduates. Being part of the Alumni maintains your connection to our community.

Inspirational Young Woman AwardGirl Guides Victoria and Women of Note are supported by the City of Casey Youth Services to host an annual Women’s Mentor Breakfast. This event provides an opportunity for young people in Year 11 (or age equivalent) to connect with positive female role models, who are successful in their chosen career.

The Women’s Mentor Breakfast 2015 was held on Friday March 18 at the City of Casey Council Chambers. Over 100 students and mentors attended the breakfast and were delighted to hear from guest speaker Kate Weiss the CEO and founder of Table of Plenty. At each table, students were seated with mentors from an industry that they were interested in pursuing, such as Law or healthcare. The breakfast provided an opportunity for students to talk directly with mentors. Kate spoke about the creation of her business which employs five full-time staff and outsources much of its production and packaging to Scope Victoria, a non-profit organisation that provides work for people with disabilities. Through Scope, Table of Plenty provides six full-time jobs to people with disabilities and more than 80,000 hours to date.

Six of our young women (Christine Minda, Aria Sunga, Jessie Tang, Shirley Tang, Alicia Lam and Sophie Tran) attended the breakfast and were inspired by their experience. Whilst at the breakfast Aria received the

inaugural City of Casey/Girl Guides Victoria Kay Rankin Inspirational Young Woman Award. Congratulations to Aria; a worthy recipient. A big thanks to Ms Mary Fankhauser for supporting the girls to attend and writing the nominations for the award.

Local Secondary School ExpoOn Thursday March 17 I had the privilege to attend the Berwick Chase Primary School Secondary School Expo with Rakith Wickramaratne and Asha Tyndall from Year 9. Whilst there we spoke to many interested parents and students about Nossal, our environment and how to gain entry to the school. Rakith and Asha did an outstanding job communicating with community members about our approaches and the school culture. They were fine ambassadors for the school community.

Gnomon School of Design

The Year 10 – 12 Visual Communication classes had an incursion with members of the team from the Gnomon School of Design last term, which was organized in conjunction with the United States of America Embassy here in Melbourne. The students were inspired and informed about techniques in graphic design.

Jasmine, from the US Embassy also donated a signed copy of Breakthrough by Jack Andraka to the IRC. Jack is a 16 year old who came up with a test for pancreatic cancer. You may remember last year when Dan Haesler spoke to us, he told the story about Jack and his persistence.

We have recently made arrangements for the US Embassy to attend our Careers and Pathways Expo on Thursday July 21 to inform us about how to approach applications to enrol in tertiary studies in the US.

Parent-Student-Teacher ConferencesIt was lovely to see so many parents and students here at the Parent-Student-Teacher Conferences throughout Thursday and Friday this week. I hope all of you have a sense of how your child has settled into the school year, and where they might focus their efforts to make continued progress throughout Term 2.

Can I remind parents that if they did not get the opportunity to meet with the teachers over the past two days, please contact the teacher directly.

New FacilitiesWe are delighted with the way the new facilities have come up as the finishing touches have been put on. We thought you might like to hear a brief outline of the status of the various projects:

The Year 12s have moved into and are making good use of the new Senior Study Centre and greatly appreciate the space.

Staff are moving into the Careers, Wellbeing and VCE Offices, which has meant we can provide students with more breakout spaces to work in around the school.

The two breakout rooms in the new area, including the one that will provide a good working space for the SRC are just awaiting delivery of some furniture.

The Fitness Centre had the final touches put on it today, when locks were fitted, and it is partially open for student use. The table tennis area can be used by students during recess and lunch and is being used for some PE and Dance classes. We are in the process of finalising the safety and supervision requirements of the gym section of this space. Once that is done we can begin utilising the equipment in there.

Our students and Ms Cilia with Alex Alvarez, Gnomon’s Founder; Jonathan Berube of Blizzard Entertainment; Alexandre Cancado from Luma Pictures LA; and the Executive Director of Melbourne’s Ideas on Design Festival, Kristin McCourtie.

Sage and Vyvyen are seen here getting some finer pointers from one of the presenters.

The oval is progressing as we patiently wait for the grass to grow and pray for appropriate weather conditions. The last of the landscaping around the oval is being finished off this week.

We are still working on the final fit out of the two classrooms at the end of the main building, but things are progressing at pace in these spaces.

View your child’s attendance onlineAt the end of Week 2 Term 2 we are opening up Compass attendance statistics and approvals to parents. As we get closer to the release date we will email parents a guide to accessing and interpreting attendance on Compass.

Year 10 and New Student Morrisby Careers and Pathways Profile TestingThis will take place in the afternoon of Wednesday April 27 from 12.00 – 3.15 pm. Students participating in this test will be required to stay until the 3.15 pm finish time. Given that it is a Wednesday, and we normally finish at 1.20 pm you can expect your child to arrive home a few hours later than normal. Students will need to bring their lunch and an afternoon snack, since the canteen is not open on a Wednesday lunchtime.

Congratulations to …• Shea McNaughton of Year 11 who has achieved a place

at the (highly competitive) UBS Finance Academy at Macquarie University in Sydney in July.

• Kanusanth Mukunthus of Year 10 for achieving the Mridanga Arangetram after many years of study. Mr and Mrs Page were honoured to attend the musical performance and were greatly impressed by the spectacle and high level of entertaining performances on the evening. Kanus has mastered the Mridanga (Indian percussion instrument that is a key instrument in traditional Carnatic music performances) and is one of a small number of students to have graduated at this level.

• Vignesh Murugan (Class of 2015) who is one of a small number of Victorian students to have their VCE work selected for display at the Melbourne Museum as part of the “Top Designs” program. Vignesh’s high tech computerised German Equatorial telescope mount created lots of interest from the invited (and k n o w l e d g e a b l e ) guests at the opening night of the show, and will be on display at the museum for several weeks.

• Ryan Venpin of Year 9 who was selected to compete in the Under 17 Victorian Badminton team at the Australasian Championships in Perth during the holidays. (Ryan is the youngest member of the team….so it looks like we should be able to take out Melbourne High School in the local championships this year!)

Visit of the Queensland Education MinisterOn Tuesday April 12 we hosted a visit from the Queensland Education Minister (the Honourable Kate Jones) and several senior educators from Queensland and Victoria (including our new Regional Director Mr Stephen Gniel – who has recently joined the Victorian Department of Education to take charge of the Southern Region). They are interested in exploring selective schools and visited Nossal, The John Monash Science School and MacRob. We regularly host overseas and interstate visitors who are interested in the work that we are doing, and in particular the things that make us “different” to other schools, it is generally a useful exchange of ideas and information, and opens the doors for reciprocal visits to build our own skills and knowledge. We have previously

hosted senior educators from Queensland and were privileged to be hosted by them at two of their top performing schools and academies two years ago. As a “specialist” school we have much to learn from other schools who are working in creative and innovative

ways and we hope to continue to do so in spite of the increasingly restrictive travel arrangements and policies currently being imposed on Government school staff.

School Council Annual General Meeting The next meeting of the School Council will include the AGM where the 2015 Annual Report will be presented. This will then be published on the My School website and the Nossal Website. All Council meetings are open to any member of the community and you are welcome to attend as observers, although there are restrictions on participation. Please contact Ms Shute beforehand if you intent to attend a Council meeting so we can make appropriate arrangements. The meeting will be held on Tuesday April 26.

Emerald and District Rotary Club Annual Community RaffleWe are fortunate to have been included in this event again this year and thanks to the generosity of Ferntree Gully Nissan (now the Ferntree Gully Motor Group) and the Rotary Club we will have the opportunity to sell tickets in a car raffle where the price of every ticket sold by Nossal is returned directly to the school. This is a marvellous fundraising event and last year Nossal sold the most tickets of all the community organisations and raised over $10,000 for the school. This year Ferntree Gully Nissan have provided two cars as the main prizes – first prize is a choice of a brand new Nissan Micra; Suzuki Swift; Holden Spark or VW Polo – second prize is the choice of one of the three remaining cars – third prize is a $1000 Westfield Voucher and fourth prize – a $500 Westfield Voucher. This year it is our turn to win a car, and to hopefully improve on our ticket sales again. We will be staging this as a House competition and all funds raised come directly back to the school so we hope that everyone will get behind it again this year. More information will follow at a later date.

Save the DatesWe look forward to another vibrant term ahead. Please make sure you put these dates in your calendar – these events all promise to provide either enjoyment and entertainment and/or information to parents and families. I know some of these dates are well into the future, but by giving advanced notice, we are hope you can schedule time out of your busy lives to come along.

• The music department are holding a Jazz Night on Friday April 29 6:30pm till 8:30pm – we look forward to hearing from our budding Jazz musicians and a return performance from the Alumni Jazz band, bring a picnic dinner and join us for a fun, relaxing evening.

For the first time at Nossal High School, we are able to send our Big Band to compete in the incredible event at Mount Gambier – Generations in Jazz.  Over 4000 students will attend this event, and our students will have the opportunity to work with musicians from the USA as well as hear the great work that is going on at other schools in Australia.  It is the biggest event happening in music education in our part of the world and we are grateful to James Mustafa for the hard work he has done to get us there.
