My day is a little different to others as I split my time as a community programmerovertwovenues.IstartmydayattheGilbertParkResourceCentre where we open in the morning and offer drop in services to local residents.Thiscanbeassimpleasofferingahotdrinkandasnack,tosupporting resident’s needs, to advocating for them.
I’mthenjoinedatGPRC,dependingontheday,byotherproviderssuchasEIAworkers,nursepractitioner,AFMaddictionscounsellor,socialworkerandCAHRDemploymentsupport.Theservicesprovidedbyourpartnersoutoftheresourcecentreintheheartofthecommunityareofhugebenefittothe local population as they help to break down the barriers both real and perceivedwhichexistandallowresidentstogainthesupporttheyneedtothrive in a friendly environment that they feel some ownership of.
IalsohaveprogramsrunningthroughouttheweekwhichIorganizeandhelpfacilitatelikeourcommunitytaxclinicandbudgetingworkshopswhichareboth supported by enthusiastic volunteers. If it were a particularly busy day I might even have a community meeting thrown in such as a resident advisory where we look for feedback on theprogramspeoplewouldliketoseeprovidedoraplanningmeetingwherealongsideresidentsweorganize
and divide roles for events like the community clean up.
ThesecondhalfofmydayseesmeattheYouthHubwhichsimilarlytoGPRCprovidesawholespectrum of resources and programs under one roofhoweverthistimespecifictotheneedsofyouthaged14-24.TheYouthHubisfocusedonfivemainpillars:mentalhealth,addictions,employment, physical health and recreation. ByprogramingactivitiesandworkshopsItake a lead on the recreation in the space. I runahomeworkandstudygrouponTuesdayafternoons and lead arts and crafts sessions throughouttheweek.Andnowthatit’sfinallyspringtime I’ll be looking to take our programs andactivitiesoutdoorsandutilizetheparkandplayingfieldsrightonourdoorstep.
