Wildlife in Norway

Norway has a lot of wildlife, especially in the north. There are too many to name, but here are the main animals: Elks, Moose, Arctic Fox, Beaver, Viper snakes, Mink, Red Squirrel, Musk Ox, Reindeer, Raven, Buzzard, Polar Bear (only found in Svalbard)

Norwegian Sports

• Handball is extremely popular in Scandinavia and the Norwegians won a gold medal in the 2012 Olympic Games.

• Many countries are good at sports which are perfect for their country’s geography. The same goes for Norway. Canoeing and skiing are the two most popular sports in Norway.

• The Winter Olympic Games were held twice in Norway. In 1952, the Winter Olympic Games were held in Oslo and in 1994, they were held in Lillehammer.

Glaciers

A glacier is a large body of ice and snow. The ice doesn’t all melt during the summertime. Every Winter, even more snow is added to the glacier, which means the glacier gets very big. It becomes so heavy that gravity makes the ice flow downwards like water, just much more slowly - only about 50 metres per year. New snowfalls replace the parts that flow away.

There are many glaciers in Norway, especially in the Jostedalsbreen, which is the largest glacier in Europe. Glaciers have special ice which is kind of turquoise colour. Glaciers normally have a stream or sometimes even a fjord or a river running down the glacier, eventually flowing into the sea. The water is also turquoise.

Glaciers have been melting more than they used to because the climate is changing and global warming is happening.

The Norwegian Fjords

A fjord is a long, narrow inlet with steep sides or cliffs, created in a valley carved by glacial activity. Both the whole coast of Norway and the island of Greenland have many fjords.A fjord is formed when a glacier cuts a U-shaped or oblong valley by scraping a rock of the surrounding bedrock.There is only one fjord in Ireland called Killary Harbour, on the Galway/Mayo border. It isn’t much compared to the Norwegian Fjords, though.

FoodNorway has some very nice traditional food, seafood and raspberries (especially). Geitost is a type of brown cheese, although it is not a cheese. It is caramelised goat’s milk and it tastes like a cheesy Camarac bar. In Norway it is eaten for breakfast.The King Crab is nearly two metres in length and is meant to be twice as nice as normal crab!Skillingsboller is a twisted pastry, which I tried. It looks a bit like a pretzel, but it isn’t. It is really nice!

Oslo

Oslo is the capital city of Norway. It has a population of 613,285. In the year 1000 AD, a church was built. This was the start of Oslo. In 1352 the city was burned down in a fire. In 1624, the whole city was burned down in another fire. The city is the oldest capital city in Scandinavia. The city was called Oslo, then Christiania, then renamed Oslo again. The Waterfront has many modern buildings including the Oslo Opera House. The city is built on a big fjord, called the Oslofjord. The Akershus Slott guards the city on the edge of the fjord. Bygdøy used to be an island, but the land rose over the sea and joined it to the rest of the city.
