Summer fun coming fastFrom festivals to golf

outings, there’s something for everyone this summer going on in the region.

Love music? There’s the Music in the Parks series or the Take Me to the Rivers Hot Jazz and Blues Festival in Defiance, Tri-State Rhythm & Rib Fest in Ottawa and various con-certs at area venues. County fairs are also featuring great musical acts. Foghat will perform at the Defiance County Fair in Hicksville.

The Morse Family Gospel Singers and Connor Rose will perform at the Paulding County Fair. The Fulton County Fair, famous for its Labor Day weekend concerts, will feature the Doobie Brothers on Aug. 31 and Lee Bice and Cole Swindell on Sept. 1.

New this year, will be an open mic night on Tuesdays at the Pontiac Park gazebo in Defiance, where local individuals can showcase their talent.

Another new event is the Defiance Hot Air Balloon Festival in August. The fes-tival will feature balloon

races, a night glow and car show, as well as food and kids' area.

The region will also be hopping with festivals throughout the summer. These include ones that cel-ebrate a heritage such as the Germanfest in Fort Wayne, Bavarian Schuetzenfest in Deshler, Greek Fest in Fort Wayne, Lagrange Street Polish Festival in Toledo, African American Festival in Toledo and others.

Other festival celebrate the area’s history such as the Johnny Appleseed Festival (which several communi-ties hold), Flat Rock Creek Festival in Paulding, Corn City Festival in Deshler, Pioneer Days in Kalida and Pettisville Friendship Days.

Then there are those fes-tivals that celebrate food. A strawberry festival will be held in both Napoleon and Defiance this year. Delta has its Chicken Festival in July. St. Joe, Ind., will have its annual pickle festival and then there are the vari-ous rib fests throughout the region.

For those who want to get

out and go, there are sever-al cruise-ins, car shows and rallys slated. Throughout the summer there will be a cruise night in Wauseon on Tuesdays. Bryan will have its cruise-ins on Thursdays through August.

The Maumee Valley Car Club will also have its First Friday’s Northtowne Cruise-Ins through September as well. The River City Rodders Car Club will have its cruise nights though August as well.

Rally in the Alley will be held in Napoleon through August, while Napoleon Harley Davidson will be having its Harley and Hot Rods on Thursdays through August too.

Those who are more active can get out and take part in some of the various runs slated throughout the summer this year.

Besides the various Relay for Life events, there are several 5K runs includ-ing: the Rifbest River Run in Antwerp, 4 Years out of Heaven 5K in Oakwood, Apache Run in Sherwood

and YMCA 5K Run in Defiance and others.

Those who prefer to take to the greens can take part in the Defiance College Alumni Yellow Jacket Classic Golf Tournament, Linus Slattery Memorial Gold Tournament Weekend and other tourneys.

Downtown Defiance setting for music, food and funDowntown Defiance will

be the place to be this sum-mer with music, entertain-ment and more.

“It’s a really busy sum-mer,” said Cindy Mack, director of the Defiance Development and Visitor’s Bureau (DDVB). “The sec-ond annual Take Me the Rivers Red Hot Jazz and Blues Festival taking part the same week as the trav-eling Vietnam Wall is in town.”

The Moving Wall — Vietnam Veterans Memorial will be at the Defiance College campus June 12-15. The jazz festival is from 5-9 p.m. June 14 at Kingsbury Park in Defiance. Performers include the Kelly McLennan Quartet, I-75 Ensemble, Motor City Beat and Fort Defiance Dixieland.

“Both events are going to be large and hopefully people go from one to the other,” Mack said, adding approximately 500-600 peo-ple attended the jazz fes-tival last year and there is hope to double that amount this year.

In addition to the jazz fest and traveling wall, there will be a several other events in the downtown area. A few events will be

reoccurring. These include Music in

the Parks and the new open mic night at Pontiac Park.

Among the performances for the Music in the Parks series are: Defiance College Community Band at 7:30 p.m. June 5 at Veterans’ Memorial Grove (Latty’s Grove); Creole Stomp at 7:30 p.m. June 26 at Riverside Park, Harpeth Rising at 7:30 p.m. July 24 at Triangle Park; and the Bud Widmer Rube Band at 6 p.m. Aug. 7 at the UAW Park.

For those who may want to perform themselves, an open mic night will be held on Tuesdays, June 3-Aug. 19, at the gazebo in Pontiac Park. Rain locations are Bibby Coffee or The Compass. The event begins at 6 p.m. each Tuesday.

Mack said Cabin Fever Coffee and Biggby Coffee had both been doing open mic nights, which drew crowds. The businesses asked if there was a bigger venue that could be used for the performances. It was agreed to have it at Pontiac Park.

“Performers will sign up when they get there,” Mack said of performing. “Both coffee shops had a lot of great people in there

performing. They really showcased the local talent. People will be surprised the kind of talent we have in our community. They just need to come down and listen.”

Open mic night is spon-sored by Biggby Coffee, Children’s Lantern, The Compass and Dedicated to Defiance. For more infor-mation, call 419-956-2025.

Also at area parks, Dr. Mor B.S. will have his Scared Stiff Down by the River movies. The movies

will be on the last Saturday in June and July and on Aug. 16. Movies will begin at dusk.

Other downtown area events this summer include Art in the Park at the Defiance Public Library/fort grounds from 10:30 a.m.-4 p.m. June 29 and the fireworks on July 3 at the confluence of the rivers. New this year to the downtown area will be a hot air balloon festival at the Defiance County Airport sponsored by the United Way of Defiance County. Proceeds from the event will be used to fund the United Way’s Community Engagement Center. The event will include 12 hot air balloons in two races, a bal-loon “glow” at dusk, pan-cake breakfast and more.

to the balloon fest of the past and hopefully it will be rebuilt into another major event in the com-munity,” Mack said.

Rounding out the sum-mer events will be the annual Ribfest from 2-11 p.m. downtown. There will be delicious ribs as well as live music. The Blues Brothers tribute band Soul Men will per-form with their seven piece band. Look for them coming in Blues Brothers’ style with an old police cruiser as well. Soul Men

are set to perform at 4 p.m. At 7 p.m. the band Reckon will entertain crowds.

Organizers are current-ly working to get a third band to perform earlier in the day.

“I like the idea of mix-ing different types of bands and music,” Mack said.

Summer fun awaits at Defiance Public Library systemThe Defiance Public

Library has a plethora of events planned this sum-mer for children, teens, adults and families.

It all starts with the sum-mer reading program. Registration online is underway and individuals can visit the library begin-ning June 9 to register in house and receive a full schedule of events.

This year’s summer read-ing challenge theme is "Fizz Boom Read."

To kick off the schedule of events, Mr. Molecule will visit June 11 to perform sev-eral unbelievable science experiments.

Mr. Molecule will be at Johnson Memorial Library in Hicksville at 2:30 p.m., Sherwood Branch Library at 4:30 p.m. and the Defiance Public Library at 6:30 p.m.

During the Summer Reading Challenge, youth are asked to read or be read to for 20 minutes a day while keeping track of it on their designated reading record.

At the end of the chal-lenge, participants who complete the requirements will be entered to win priz-es.

There will be various summer reading events throughout the summer.

The final event for the Summer Reading Challenge will be July 30 when the libraries will have some animal visitors from the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo. The zoo will visit Defiance Public Library at 11 a.m., Sherwood Branch Library at 3 p.m. and Johnson Memorial Library in Hicksville at 5:30 p.m.

The library will also have a summer series for adults at the Defiance Public Library.

The series begins at 2 p.m. June 12 with container gar-dening presented by Sister Rita Wienken. Wienken has more than 35 years of experience being an organic farmer and educator. She will talk about how grow-

ing vegetables in contain-ers is growing in popular-ity and can help create a healthy food system.

Individuals can then get the buzz on organic honey from local beekeeper David Jebb at 6 p.m. June 17. Jebb, the owner of the Village Square in Defiance, will talk about the healthy prop-erties of organic honey.

Those with a more artistic flair might want to come to the library at 6 p.m. June 25 for the “Coffee & Canvas” event. Registration is required for this free event.

During “Coffee & Canvas,” individuals can come to the library for an informal evening of paint-ing and iced coffee.

Those looking to the heav-

ens may enjoy the last two events in the summer series at the library.

Tom Burns, director of the Perkins Observatory operated by Ohio Wesleyan

University, will talk about backyard astronomy at 6 p.m. July 9. Weather per-mitting, participants will be able to go outside to view the stars with a telescope near the end of the pro-gram.

The last of the series will be on chasing summer storms. This event will be at 5:30 p.m. July 15.

Photographer/cinema-tographer Allan Detrich, a Toledo native, will talk about capturing a summer storm in photographs and his first-hand accounts on storm chasing.

Fort Wayne offering festivals for everyone this summerFORT WAYNE — There’s

a festival for everyone in Fort Wayne this summer.

Things kick off on June 6-7 with Sweetwater Sound’s GearFest. The nation’s largest end-user oriented music and pro audio festi-val features performances, a musician’s flea market and educational opportu-nities such as workshops, clinics and seminars. Those in town for GearFest might want to stick around a bit longer as the week-long Germanfest starts June 8 at Headwaters Park.

The 33rd annual event celebrates German heritage as well as “essen, trinken und Gemütlichkeit” (eating, drinking and having a good

time). The event kicks off with a

German Mass at St. Peter’s Catholic Church on June 8 at 11 a.m. The official open-ing ceremonies of the event will be held at 3 p.m. by the Fort Wayne Mannerchor/Damenchor organization at the park on Elmhurst Drive. Opening night activities close with dinner, food and live entertainment at 5:30 p.m.

Other fun events dur-ing the festival include the maskrugstemmen kontest (who can hold a beer stein the longest without spilling) at 6:30 p.m. at Club Soda and a visit from the Bolo Tie Line Dance troupe from Fort Wayne’s sister city Gera, Germany, at 7:30 p.m. in the Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation Community Center, both on June 9; the Show Us Your Legs ’N

Ledrhosen Contest at 7:30 p.m. June 12; masskrugren-nen (stein line relay race) at 4 and 8:30 p.m. June 13; Familienfest midway from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. with games and rides for kids of all ages and national wiener dog finals from 2-5:30 p.m. on June 14; and much more.

Those who love ribs need to head to Headwaters Park on June 19-22 as the 17th annual RibFest will be held. Each year the festival fea-tures ribs, brisket, pulled pork, rib sandwiches, chick-en and more. There is also live entertainment through-out the event.

Individuals can then cel-ebrate their Greek heritage during Greekfest on June 26-29 at Headwaters Park. The 34th annual event includes live music, danc-ing, food, raffles and the annual 5K run/walk on

streets during Buskerfest on June 28. The festival cele-brates street performers and live art. It’s held from 4-11 p.m. at Wayne and Calhoun streets. Expect to see stilt walkers, mimes, face paint-ers and various acts per-form.

One of the biggest events in the city will happen July 11-19 as the Three Rivers Festival kicks off at Headwaters Park and vari-ous other locations. Just some of the activities sched-uled during the festival are the kick off parade at 9:45 a.m. July 11, Art in the Park in Freimann Square on July 12-13, bed races on Main Street on July 16, Children’s Fest on July 18-19 at the IPFW campus, raft race and fireworks on July 19. Throughout the event there

will be food vendors, down-town midway and enter-tainment.

The Allen County Fair, which offers music, crafts, food, rides and games, will be July 22-27 at the fair-grounds on Carroll Road. The fair will be host to a karaoke contest, team pig wrestling, rickshaw races, redneck relays, hot air balloon fly out and glow, cruise-in and demolition derby.

For automobile enthusi-asts the Muddy River Run will be held from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. July 26 at the IPFW campus. The run includes a cruise-in, poker run, driv-ing events, games, car corral and swap meet.

noisseurs will flock to Headwaters Park on Sept. 12-13 for Mad Anthony’s Oktoberfest. The festival, which is open from 2-6 p.m., features more than 20 regional craft brew-ers, with more than 100 Indiana beers as well.

One of the more unique festivals in Fort Wayne is the Regional Maker Faire on Sept. 13-14 at Headwaters Park. The family-friendly festival is for individuals who like to make, create, invent, craft and tinker. The festival celebrated things people create themselves, includ-ing science and technology items, alternative energy vehicles, art cars, urban farming, woodworking, bicycles and more.

Closing out the festival season is a celebration of the life and times of John Chapman. The Johnny Appleseed Festival will be held Sept. 20-21. The fes-tival includes demonstra-tors, living history exhibits such as a military encamp-ment and trappers, food booths, a farmer’s market, crafts and children’s area. This is the 40th anniver-sary of the festival, which has more than 200 booths and has had vendors from more than 42 states.

Hot Air Balloon Festival floats into Defiance this August

The air around the Defiance will turn into a kaleidoscope of colors in August as the Defiance County Hot Air Balloon Festival lands.

The Defiance Hot Air Balloon Festival will be held Aug. 16 at the Defiance County Memorial Airport. The event will benefit the United Way’s Community Engagement Center. The center will connect schools, churches and various other programs and organiza-tions with the volunteers they need through an online database.

“The goal of the commu-nity engagement center is to lift the community so it’s very fitting (to have the hot air balloon festival),” said Savanna Weber, director of the center.

Events will begin with a

pancake breakfast from 7-9 a.m. Pre-sell tickets will be available at www.defiance-balloonfest.com. During the breakfast balloons will be flying into the airport for individuals to see. A dozen balloons will fill the sky over the airport as they come into the area during their first race of the day.

Individuals will have the opportunity to go up in the tethered Re/Max hot air balloon in the morning and evening, sponsored by Defiance Eagles. Pricing and times will be available on the website soon. A race will be at 7 p.m, with the hot air balloons launching from the airport.

Biggby Coffee will be sponsoring a kids fair with inflatables, carnival games and crafts from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. The kids area will also

have a petting zoo, pony rides and pig races from 2-6 p.m., clown and balloon animals from 3-6 p.m. and face painting from 4-8 p.m.

There will be food ven-dors set up for individu-als to enjoy throughout the event.

The festival also will fea-ture an open mic showcase from 4-7 p.m. Weber said it's a great chance for local bands to perform and for individuals to hear them.

The pilots of the balloon will then have dinner at 5 p.m. After they eat, indi-viduals can come meet the balloonists and ask them questions from 6-6:30 p.m.

Those wanting to look at cool things a little closer to the ground can take part in the car cruise-in from 6-8 p.m. The Maumee Valley Car Club will be conduct-

ing the cruise-in. There is no entry fee, but free-will donations will be accepted.

At 9 p.m. the balloon glow will begin. In addi-tion to the glow, ProMedica Defiance Regional Hospital will be sponsoring a 1-mile fun Glow Walk and Glow contest. Check-in for the walk is at 8:30 with the walk at 9 p.m.

Individuals are invited to watch the hot air balloons glow as they walk around the airport runway during this event.

Pre-registration for the walk is $20 for adults and $10 for children age 18 and younger. Those who regis-ter before July 14 will get a T-shirt and glow neck-lace. Race day registration are an additional $10 and T-shirts are not guaranteed. Following the walk will be a glow contest.

Individuals are encour-aged to use wear glow-in-the-dark clothing, accesso-ries and body paint. There will be a prize for the best glow adult and child.

out on the open road After being cooped up all

winter with the snow, it’s time to get out on the road-ways and enjoy the nice summer weather.

To help, there are several cruise-ins, car/motorcycle shows and rides scheduled throughout the region.

Every Tuesday night in Wauseon there will be a cruise night from 6-8 p.m. this summer, while Bryan will have its cruise-ins on Thursdays through August. Rally in the Alley and the First Friday’s Northtowne Cruise-ins will have events one day each month in the summer as well.

For motorcycle enthu-siasts, Rally in the Alley and Harleys and Hot Rods return in Napoleon with events through August.

There are also plenty of shows scheduled to high-light special and unique vehicles.

The Antique Motorcycle Club of America will have its show and race at the Fulton County Fairgrounds in Wauseon this July. Motorcyclists can also head to the Wetzelland Swap Meet in July at the Van Wert County Fairgrounds in Van Wert.

The Maumee Valley Car Club will hold its 30th annu-al car show in August in Defiance, while the Auburn Cord Dusenberg Festival in Auburn, Ind., will bring thousands of antique vehi-cles to northeast Indiana and northwest Ohio.

There’s also the Motorama at AuGlaize Village, car show during the Hicksville Summerfest and Defiance Hot Air Balloon Festival, both in August, and more.

Individuals enjoy a trip during the Old Timer's Ride in 2013. There are several

bike rallies, shows and rides slated for this summer in the region.

Motorcyclists are ready to ride in northwest Ohio

As the weather warms up, motorcyclists are tak-ing to the roadways to have some fun.

This year there are sev-eral rides, rallies and shows for motorcycle enthusi-asts throughout northwest Ohio.

There are some ongoing events such as Rally in the Alley and Harleys and Hot Rods, both in Napoleon.

There will be a bike rally in June at the John Paulding County Historical. Individuals are welcome to tour the museum after the ride.

Integrity Auto Body will also be hosting an Old Timer's Ride in June.

Those individuals who may want to check out some bikes can visit the Antique Motorcycle Club of America Show and Race in July at the Fulton County Fairgrounds in Wauseon or the Wetzelland Swap Meet in July at the Van Wert County Fairgrounds in Van Wert.

There will also be some shows to benefit area orga-nizations such as Relay for Life or the Williams County Humane Society.

The Relay for Life Car, Truck and Motorcycle Show in Bryan this June, while the Cruisin' Critters Car, Truck & Motorcycle Show will be held in July in Bryan.

a bark-covered wigwam, sit at a desk in the log school or sing a hymn in the Village church. Watch spinning, broom making, and pottery demonstrations and help make butter in the historic homes. Meet the horses and cows, take a ride on the train and enjoy some ice-cream or fudge. There are so many ways to create spe-cial memories while having fun in the past this summer at Sauder Village – Ohio’s largest living-history desti-nation.

“A visit to Sauder Village offers our guests an oppor-tunity to celebrate the lives of our pioneer ancestors,” said Kim Krieger, PR/media relations. “Sauder Village is an excellent place for guests of all ages to spend time together – whether it’s a couple looking for a relax-

ing day away, a fun day with grandchildren or a special outing with good friends.”

Built in 1976 by Erie J. Sauder, Sauder Village has continued to grow and change through the years. One thing that has remained constant; however, is the welcoming hospitality. In more than 40 historic homes and shops, costumed guides and working crafts-men welcome guests from around the world and help them experience the past in rural northwest Ohio.

Throughout the historic village guests can experi-ence life in Ohio through activities and stories shared in the community shops, Native American area, Pioneer Settlement, historic homes, farm and gardens. While watching a cooking demonstration in the 1910

Homestead, sitting at a desk in the District 16 School or hearing stories in the bar-bershop, visitors often feel as though they are taking a trip down memory lane. And since it’s not a guid-ed tour, visitors can take their time while experienc-ing life in the past at their own pace. Depending on the day and season, visitors also have the opportunity to try a variety of hands-on activities like making noodles, rolling out a pie crust, washing clothes on a scrub board or playing old-fashioned games.

Throughout the village visitors can also marvel at craftsmen blending skill and creativity in glass, met-als, fabric, wood and clay. These talented traditional and contemporary crafts-men not only demonstrate their trade but also offer

handcrafted items avail-able for sale in places like the Spinning Shop, Pottery Shop, Tin Shop, Glass Shop and Tiffin River Woodworks. Other popu-lar craft shops include the Basket Shop, Weaving Shop, Cooper’s Shop and Blacksmith Shop.

New this year, Sauder Village is pleased to be unveiling many projects in conjunction with the Grist Mill renovation. Guests are sure to appreciate the updates to the exterior of the building as well as the rearrangement of inte-rior furnishings and new displays to help share the important stories associated with the mill. Located in the lobby of the Museum Building, the “Grain: From Field to Flour” Exhibit pres-ents a more in-depth look at grains while offering

some hands-on learning as well. With support from the Ohio Humanities Council, an agriculture-themed lec-ture series has also been planned for the 2014 sea-son. Lectures will be held on June 9 and Oct. 6.

A visit to Sauder Village would not be complete without a ride on the horse and buggy or the Erie Express Train. Other favor-ite stops include a visit to the Ice Cream Parlor and the Sweet Shoppe for some homemade fudge. There are many unique shopping opportunities at Sauder Village including Threads of Tradition Quilt Shop, the Village Gift Shop and

Lauber’s General Store. Also on the Sauder Village Complex is the Sauder Store and Outlet – a home-town factory store offering a vast selection of ready-to-assemble furniture made locally by the Sauder Woodworking Co.

The Barn Restaurant offers a unique place to enjoy a home-style meal. Built in about 1861 on a farm just a few miles from Sauder Village, more than 200,000 visitors enjoy din-ing under the hand-hewn timbers of this historic barn every year. Guests also enjoy finding delicious treats to take home from the Doughbox Bakery.

For those looking to extend their stay, overnight accommodations are avail-able at the Sauder Heritage Inn or Campground. Guests feel right at home in the 98-room Heritage Inn complete with indoor

pool and hot tub, game and exercise room – all adjacent to the “Great Oak Tree.” The 48-site campground is a great place to relax and enjoy time together while fishing, sharing sto-ries around the campfire, riding bikes or walking around “Little Lake Erie” or enjoying the amenities at the Heritage Inn.

Historic Sauder Village is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday from noon-4 p.m.

The village is closed on Mondays, except holi-days. Admission is $16 for adults, $14 for seniors, $10 for students (6-16) and free for members and children 5 and under. Again this year, children 16 and younger are free every Sunday this season.

Independence Dam State Park in rural Defiance allows individuals to explore part of the Buckeye Trail or the towpath of thing Miami and Erie Canal. Individuals can also enjoy boating and picnic areas at hte park. Other area parks, such as Mary Jane Thurston State Park in Grand Rapids also has part of the Buckeye Trail and offers fishing, boating and picnicking.

Those who may want to travel a little farther can

visit Hocking Hills State Park in Logan with its cave and rock formations, climbing wall, swimming spots and other features or Pokagon State Park in Angola, Ind., which has a nature center and allows swimming, boating and picnicking.

Camping is available at many of the state parks as well.

County fairs bring live entertainmentFair season is coming to

northwest Ohio.Throughout the sum-

mer and into fall, there will be several county fairs throughout the region bringing delicious fair food, rides and entertainment.

Besides animal judgings, many fairs will offer pedal pulls, cheerleading com-petitions, band shows and demolition derbies.

This year’s fair season kicks off with the Paulding County Fair in June. The fair will be offering various entertainment including the Buckeye State Sanctioned Pedal Tractor Pull on June 10 as well as performanc-

es by Connor Rose, the Dazzling Mills Family and the Morse Family Gospel Singers.

Many area fairs are fea-turing live music and con-certs. The Lucas County Fair in Maumee will have the Mr. Speed Kiss Tribute Band performing at 7 p.m. July 11. Nashville Crush will perform at the Putnam County Fair in Ottawa on June 28. The Defiance County Fair will feature Foghat at 8 p.m. Aug. 16.

In Henry County, Chase Rice will perform at 8:30 p.m. Aug. 11 at the fair. Dustin Lynch will then per-form at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 7 at

the Williams County Fair. The Fulton County Fair,

which always has big Labor Day weekend concerts, will again offer big draws. The Dooby Brothers will per-form at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 31; and Lee Brice and Cole Swindell will take the stage at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 1.

The Ohio State Fair will also feature perfor-mances by Boyz II Men, Lady Antebellum, Scotty McCreery, Jesus Culture, Bachman & Turner, Blue Oyster Cult, Foghat, The Beach Boys/America, Heart, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Aretha Franklin and Zendaya.

A trio of area communi-ties will be celebrating July 4 by having firework exhib-its.

The city of Bryan will have fireworks during its Day in the Park on June 29 at dusk at Bryan Recreational Park

on Center Street.On July 3, fireworks will

be set off at the conflu-ence of the Maumee and Auglaize rivers in Defiance at dusk.

Individuals can watch the display at Kingsbury

Park, Pontiac Park or the fortgrounds.

The city of Napoleon will have its fireworks dis-play at 10 p.m. July 4 at the Napoleon Municipal Golf Course, located on Glenwood Avenue.
