Mr Flynn was asked about allegations that hehad taken a £50,000 bribe from Mr Gilmartin. MrFlynn replied that neither Mr Gilmartin nor hiswife were “well” – a remark which Mr Gilmartintook personally and he decided to testify at theMahon tribunal investigating corruption in theplanning process. The tribunal found Mr Flynnhad “wrongly and corruptly” sought a £50,000payment from Mr Gilmartin in 1994 – which heused to buy a farm in Co Mayo in his wifeDorothy’s name.

In a statement the family said Mr Gilmartinwas “a much-loved husband, father andgrandfather. We mourn the loss of a trulyhonest, honourable and courageous man.

Hot on the heels of good news last weekthat Northgate were to create 150 jobsin Castlebar came the announcement

early this week that Baxter Healthcare is toseek over 100 voluntary redundancies at itsmanufacturing facility in the town.

The company is scaling back production ofa number of lines at the site, including renal

dialysis equipment. It plans to reduce thenumbers working on weekend shifts from 180to 70. It is understood that the 110redundancies will be sought across theCastlebar operation.

Baxter employs in the region of 800 peopleat its manufacturing operation there.

The company said the decision to seek the

redundancies is being made to "drive supplychain efficiency and provide flexibility in itsglobal manufacturing network". The majorityof the redundancies will be implementedduring the first quarter of next year.

Baxter Healthcare employs almost 1,000people at its two manufacturing plants inCastlebar and Swinford. It has been in Mayosince the 1970s. The redundancies are part ofa global rationalization programme followingthe loss of a worldwide tender.

It is understood that the job losses will beconfined to Baxter’s facility in Castlebar andthe staffing levels in Swinford will notaffected by the decision. Staff had beencalled into a meeting on Sunday evening andit is understood the meeting coincided withsimilar announcements across the company’sworld-wide plants.

It is also understood that staff have beenoffered a good redundancy package withseven weeks pay for each year of service onoffer.

While some are confident about rhe futureof the future of Baxter in Castlebar, LabourParty Councillor Harry Barrett believes thesigns are ominous since it comes so soon afterthe 150 redundancies in 2012. Unlike Allerganin Westport they seem to have no plans forexpansion which is a major concern in thelong-term.

SIPTU had a meeting with management ofthe company yesterday.

In 2011, the firm was forced to temporarilyshut down some production in Castlebarfollowing endotoxin contamination on anassembly line there. The contamination led totemporary job losses at the time.

THE news that a section of the WesternGreenway has been closed by alandowner in Achill, effectively cutting

the successful tourist trail in two, shows onceagain the need for legislation to provide forwalking routes and cycling paths in scenic

areas of the country, according to CouncillorHarry Barrett.

The Labour Party representative explained:“Coming on top of the Lissadell judgement, this is yet another blow for walking tourism inthe west and it will cost the county jobs and

income.“The Western Greenway alone generates

€7.2 million for the local economy in Mayo, according to Fáilte Ireland, yet even thissuccessful project is being jeopardised by theactions of a single uncooperative landowner. This will certainly hurt the local economy.

“This is yet another example of why it isimportant that we pass legislation to giveresponsible walkers more access to thecountryside, and the economic benefits ofsuch a measure would be quite substantial.

“In Scotland, land access legislation wasintroduced a decade ago and the Scottishtourist industry is benefitting hugely, earningaround £1.4 billion from nature basedtourism. If we implemented access legislationin Ireland, it would be a huge boost to ourtourist industry, and help create jobs wherethey are badly needed.

“For all these reasons, the Labour Partyintroduced the Access to the Countryside Billin June of this year which is aimed at helpingto create jobs in the tourist industry by givingwalkers greater access to our beautifulcountryside. “The bill will be discussed indetail by the Oireachtas EnvironmentCommittee early next year and will hear fromall the stakeholders involved, includinglandowners and walking groups.

“The fact that the Western Greenway inMayo, which is bringing €7.2 million per yearto the local economy, is being cut in two by asingle landowner, shows that legislation isneeded in this area.”

Concern has been expressed in Ballisodare about thecondition of a house recently gutted by fire. The burntout house at Woodbrook Heights is said to be accessibleand neighbours are worried about anti-social behaviour.Sinn Fein local election candidate Thomas Healy said:"Concern is mounting about the the overall condition andopen access to the dwelling.

"This is actually the second time in recent years thatthis house has been burnt out.

"The danger of the fire spreading and the potentialsmoke and structural damage to adjoining buildings is amajor issue for residents.

"Even more pressing however is that the property isopen and allows access to the public. This is animmediate health and safety issue.

"Neighbours are fearful of the potential for additionaldamage being caused by anti-social behaviour in thehouse at night."

He has written to the Council asking for interim safetymeasures to be put in place.

Urban-rural co-operation urged on pylon issueWHILE Ballina town councilrecently passed a motionsupporting Cllr Mark Winters’proposal that Eirgrid puts itscontroversial pylon projectunderground the move seemsto be gathering momentumnationwide. THE majority ofTDs and senators serving onthe OireachtasCommunications Committeewant the State's controversialnew pylon project to gounderground, according tosurvey carried out by theSunday Independent.

The findings come asCommunications Minister PatRabbitte comes undermounting pressure on an issuethat threatens to dominatesome of next year's localelections.

And it comes as incomingEirGrid chairman JohnO'Connor – who is at thecentre of conflict of interestclaims over his previous rolewith An Bord Pleanala – willthis week be grilled bymembers of the samecommittee who are opposedto the semi-state company'splans to erect giant 45-metrepylons across huge swathes ofthe countryside.

Eighteen of the 21committee membersresponded to queries from theSunday Independent thisweekend. Eleven said theywanted the project to gounderground, while seven saidthey were "undecided".

Not a single TD or senatoron the committee said theybacked Mr Rabbitte andEirGrid's preferred option toput the project overground, which has sparked massprotest meetings across thecountry in recent weeks.

Kerry South Independent TDTom Fleming said the projectshould go undergroundbecause "health and heritageissues are a big concern forpeople".

And although he admittedthat going underground wouldbe the more expensive option

in the short term, he insistedit "would result in long-termsavings".

That view was shared bySinn Fein's Michael Colreavy, the TD for Sligo/NorthLeitrim. Mr Colreavy saidthere was "conflictinginformation on the issue" butargued "undergrounding wouldbe cheaper over a 35-40-yearlife cycle".

The Ballina town councilmember‘s motion was urgingurban-rural co-operation inthe campaign to have EirGridput the 400kV cables in the

Grid West project under theground.

It follows the example setby elected members of MayoCounty Council earlier thismonth in calling on thegovernmment to intervene inthe controversy.

Councillor Winters said thatelected members of the towncouncil often talk in a selfishway about what thehinterland can do for thetown of Ballina, but now wasa time for townspeople tothink about what they coulddo for residents of thehinterland.

He made his comments atthe November monthlymeeting of the council, wherehe tabled a notice of motioncalling on EirGrid to put thecables underground.

The Sligo county board last week ratified PatFlanagan to take over as manager of the seniorteam for 2014. He had vacated the Westmeath

managerial position at the end of the summer.Flanagan brings a good record to the job, taking

Westmeath from division three to division one in threeyears, and also winning county championships withTyrellspass and Clara, although he found himselfunwanted in his native county at the end of thissummer, partly on the back of a heavy defeat toDublin.

So he takes over the Sligo reins which had been heldby former Galway player Kevin Walsh for the last fouryears.

The Sligo board, because of its indebtiness, wasrefused permission for months from Croke Park torecruit a new manager.

Reports in September revealed that the countyboard was €1.5m in debt and in need of a €250,000loan from Croke Park to meet their day-to-day runningcosts. It was decided that no movement would bemade on recruiting a new manager until budgets hadbeen agreed with Croke Park for 2014.

The GAA's monitoring committee, which includedthe chairman of the finance committee in Croke Park,Lauri Quinn, Connacht GAA secretary John Prenty andGerry McGovern, instructed Sligo GAA to get theiraffairs in order, starting with short and long-termbudgets and a fundraising plan.

Work had also ground to a halt on the €3.2m SligoGAA Centre of Excellence at Scarden on the Sligo-Strandhill Road.

Flanagan has been appointed for a one-year term, which will be reviewed at the end of the season andwill be meeting the players this week in addition tofinalising a back room team, which also forms part ofthe management of the Under-21 team.

A religious group in west Roscommon claimingto be part of the Catholic Church is causingsome concern and has prompted the localCatholic bishop to make a statement on thematter.

This week the Bishop of Achonry, Most Rev.Dr. Brendan Kelly, distanced himself from thegroup, the Ballaghaderreen basedCongregation Of Our Lady of Refuge, statingthat it had “nothing to do with the CatholicChurch” and “nothing to do with the AchonryDiocese”.

According to Mike Garde, the Director ofDialogue Ireland, he had been contacted bymembers of the public in relation to concernsover the establishment of the group in theBallaghaderreen area. “We have beencontacted by members of the public inrelation to the establishment of thisorganisation and we are investigating theseconcerns. “We get calls from people on anearly daily basis, and in the case ofRoscommon we are investigating the concernsraised about Ballaghaderreen’s CongregationOf Our Lady of Refuge.

“We contacted Bishop Brendan Kelly, the

Bishop of Achonry in May to see if he wasaware of the existence of this church, whichclaims to be part of the Catholic Church andhe told us he was not aware of it. Theseconcerns need to be investigated,” explained

Mr Garde. Dialogue Ireland is an independenttrust that seeks to promote people’s freedomto make informed choices about religious, spiritual and philosophical beliefs.

It is understood that the congregation wasestablished less than a year ago by aBallaghaderreen businessman and has only asmall number of members. The concernsregarding the organisation were raised prior todetails emerging from a property in Londonlast week where three women, including a 57-year-old Irish woman were held for thirtyyears. “As an organisation assisting the victimsof cultism, we are contacted every week bymembers of the public about concerns overcults from all across Ireland and the rest ofthe world.

“However, since the story emerged inLondon last week, the amount of calls we havereceived has been overwhelming. We try tohelp people clarify whether the problems theyare encountering result from involvement withcultism or other issues. We refer people on tocounsellors who understand the issues relatedto cult involvement,” he said.

A housing estate for€50,000Another indication of the disparity in prices betweeneast and west, not to mention another reminder ofthe legacy of the Celtic Tiger, a 14 house estate inBallindine, together with six more sites in the es-tate, sold for a mere €50,000 last week.

A good number of the houses in the Ard Lugal-isheen estate are ‘close to completion’ while somemore ‘need a good bit of work’ according to DavidReynolds of Gunne Reynolds Auctioneers in Sligo, who sold the estate on behalf of a financial institu-tion. All the houses are three bedroom semi-de-tatched houses.

While it might seem like a giveaway price, MrReynolds puts some context on the sale.

“It is definitely good value but it is not somethingthat everyone would be able to buy,” he told TheMayo News yesterday (Monday). “It is value to some-one who would have the funds to finish it off butthere is a good bit of money to be spent on it yet.

“Even if any of the houses are finished shortly, itdoes not mean they are ready to go because thegroundworks on the estate have to be finished. Thebuyer will have to spend a lot of money on it,”added Mr Reynolds.

Mr Reynolds added that the buyer will have tocomply with the planning permission granted for thedevelopment and will have to pay bonds to MayoCounty Council and finish the estate for the takingover by the council for maintenance. Essentially theentire estate will have to be finished by the buyer inorder to sell the houses in it.

But €50,000 for six sites alone represents value, not to mention 14 houses in various stages of com-pletion on top of that. The estate has been idle for anumber of years and its construction began over sixyears ago, The Mayo News understands.

It is located on the Ballyhaunis road out ofBallindine. The auction took place in the McWilliamPark in Claremorris on Friday afternoon. There wasin the region of 30 people at the auction, which wasa single lot auction.

Not many bids were taken and David Reynolds saidthey ‘expected’ the estate to go for more than€50,000. The buyer, he was, was not from Mayo.

The North West, in linewith other areas orIreland, has benefited

significantly from theGathering events organised bycommunities across theregion. Festivals, musical andcultural events of all kindshelped to make it a year ofresurgence of many areas ofthe tourist industry.Minister of State for Tourism &Sport Michael Ring hasdescribed new figures showinga 7.3% increase in visitornumbers this year as‘phenomenal’.“The combination of TheGathering, more flights intoIreland, better value for

money and the Government’sown initiatives have made2013 a truly great year fortourism. These arephenomenal figures withincreased visitor numbersfrom all our main markets, particularly from our higherspending long-haul markets,”Minister Ring said.New CSO figures show morethan over 6 million overseasvisits to Ireland in the first tenmonths of the year - anincrease of 7.3% on thecorresponding period in 2012.

For the first ten months of2013, compared to the sameperiod in 2012:

• North American visits wereup by 14.6%;• Visits from Great Britainwere up by 5.1%;• Mainland European visitswere up by 5.6%;• Other long-haul routes wereup by 14.4%.

“This is just the latest goodeconomic news about Irishtourism. Earlier this week welearned that 25% of all newemployment growth in thelast year is in the tourism-related accommodation &food tourism sector. Tourism isplaying a leading role in oureconomic recovery and I amconfident that we will meetthe key targets we set for TheGathering.

“I’m really pleased by thevisitor numbers from Britain, which has been one of ourmost challenging markets inrecent years. We had 12.2%more visitors from Britainbetween July and September, compared to the same threemonths in 2012. Our Launch ofTourism Ireland’s marketingplans next week will help usto continue getting themessage out that there hasnever been a better time tovisit Ireland.”

Niall Gibbons, CEO ofTourism Ireland said: “Today’sfigures from the CSO for theten-month period to the endof October are very strong, showing growth from almostall of our markets around theworld. We are seeing recordgrowth this year from NorthAmerica (+14.6% up to the end

of October); and from ourlong-haul markets (+14.4%),with Australia and NewZealand in particular drivingthat growth. I am particularlypleased to see a good returnto growth in British visitornumbers (+5.1%). MainlandEurope is also playing its partin growing tourism businessfrom overseas this year(+5.6%); in fact, 2013 looksset to be the best year everfor visitors from Germany,France and Spain. Next weekwe will launch our marketingplans for 2014 and beyond –when we will announce detailsof how we will build on thesuccess of 2013 and sustaingrowth in overseas tourisminto the future.”

Welcoming the figures,Fáilte Ireland CEO ShaunQuinn said: “Today’s figuresare further evidence of animpressive recovery in thetourism sector. Workingclosely with tourismbusinesses, Fáilte Ireland hasbeen hearing of growth acrossall sectors – accommodation, attractions, and restaurants -as well as receiving directfeedback that overseasmarkets are now reallydelivering for tourismbusinesses - in particularNorth America. Mintel's annual IrishLifestyles reporthighlights a significant

rise in Ireland’s stress levelsas the economic downturnsees financial pressure takingits toll on Irish health.Indeed, revealing analarming increase in thelevels of stress suffered byconsumers today, as many as35% of RoI consumers reporta rise in stress levels.Meanwhile, those in the NIare also affected, with 28%of consumers there reportingan increase in stress levels. The report also sees stressdriving consumers to food, with around one in seven(15% of NI and 14% of RoI)Irish consumers admittingstress is making them eatmore than they should.

Brian O’Connor, SeniorConsumer Analyst at Mintel, said: “The economy may beimproving, but the tightcosts of living are still addingto Irish consumer pressureand are taking their toll onIrish mental health.Furthermore, this increasedpressure is seeing consumersturn to comfort foods tocope, adversely affectingtheir health. Time pressureis leaving consumers withless time to cook andexercise, and as a resultdriving consumers towardsconvenience food which isoften rich in salt and fat anda sedentary lifestyle.”

Weight and health - lack ofwillpower is a problem fornation’s dieters

Around two thirds (64% of NIand 66% of RoI) of Irishconsumers say they wouldlike to be in better physicalhealth, pointing to a desireto be healthier. That said, some 31% of NI and 33% ofRoI consumers admit that

they worry more about theirweight and physicalappearance than actualhealth - pointing to a verybody conscious society.Today, only 6% of NI and 5%of RoI consumers feel thatwillpower is required whensticking to a diet. What is more, some 30% ofNI and 32% of RoI consumersagree that not eating junkfood is important to ahealthy lifestyle. But whilemost consumers recognisethat eating junk food is badfor their health, this doesnot stop them indulging.Indeed, 14% of NI and 11% ofRoI consumers admit toeating junk food at leastonce per day, with youngerconsumers aged between 16-24 (30% RoI and 24% NI)being most likely to do so.Today, some 28% of RoI and27% of NI consumers admit tofeeling confused about whatis healthy for them due toconflicting information onhealth foods and diets.Meanwhile, only 18% of NIand 12% of RoI consumerspay attention to colourcoded nutrition labels. Andwhen it comes to healthyeating, cost is a major issue, some 46% of NI and 47% ofRoI consumers feel buyinghealthy food can beexpensive.“While the desire to be inbetter physical health isgood news, withoutwillpower to stick to dietsand exercise regimes, itcould be wasted time, energy and money on thepart of consumers. If thisattitude persists, the cycleof Irish consumers falling onand off the wagon in termsof dieting and exercising willcontinue. Costs of living inIreland increased between2012 and 2013, and this hasput the squeeze onconsumers’ groceryspending. With so many

consumers perceivinghealthy food as beingexpensive, if the trend forconsumer prices to increasecontinues into 2014, it couldsee more consumers turningaway from fresh goods, premium brand dietproducts, and more towardscheaper foods - that may notnecessarily be healthy.”Brian continues.

The vices - drinking andsmoking

Today, as many as four in ten(39% in NI and 42% in RoI)Irish drink alcohol on aweekly basis, and one intwenty (5% in RoI and 7% inNI ) drink every day. Whiletwo in five drink on a weeklybasis some three in ten (29%of NI and 28% of RoI)consumers agree that theythink that not drinking toomuch is important to ahealthy lifestyle. And it isnot just drink with whichIrish consumers acknowledgethe health risks. Some 51% ofRoI and 52% of NI consumersnote that they feel notsmoking is a key factor inleading a healthy lifestyle, pointing to a high level ofconsumers recognising thedangers of tobacco products.Despite this, around a fifthof Irish (19% of NI and 22% ofRoI ) consumers smoke atleast once per day in 2013.

Friends are key to Irishhappiness - but technologygets between friends andfamilyMintel’s research also revealsthe importance of friendsand family to the nation’shappiness. Today, as many as57% of RoI and 53% of NIconsumers see a close circleof friends and family asbeing important for a happylife. Friends take preferenceover taking time to enjoyfamily life (41% of RoI and

39% of NI) and a goodwork/life balance (37% RoIand 38% of NI).And it seems that for mostIrish consumers, money isn’tthe key to happiness, indeed, just three in tenIrish (31% of RoI and 30% ofNI) see healthy finances askey to a happy life and lessthan a fifth (17% in RoI and19% in NI) feel beingprepared financially for thefuture will bring happiness. While friends are key to thenation’s happiness, technology is having animpact on friendship withthose who spend longeronline being less inclined tocare about friends andfamily. Some 61% of NI and60% of RoI consumers whospend between one andthree hours online per dayagree that family isimportant. By comparison, only 33% of NI and 50% of RoIconsumers who spend sevenhours or more online feelfamily is important to theirhappiness.“Consumers see their familyand friends as important totheir happiness, whichshould see demand for thelikes of family holidays, andother family oriented leisureactivities remain constantmoving forward. However, the longer consumers spendonline the less they seem tocare about their families. Ifinternet and technologyusage continues to growamong Irish consumers, itcould see many peoplebecoming more isolated fromtheir friends and family, asthey forsake them for videogames, social networks andother online activities.”claims Brian.THE lengthy report also goeson to say that less than halfof Irish people have OKfinancial health whiletechnology and healthpresents a mixed bag.

Clare Connolly, daughter of Eileen andPatrick Connolly, Enniscrone, Co. Sligo, has returned from the World Drug Free

Powerlifting Championships in Glasgow with aworld title for Ireland in the under 53kgseniors division.

Connolly (36), trains with the Abs Gym inDublin's Templebar, took up competitivepowerlifting in January of this year and hassince developed a strong passion for the sport

and strength training. "When my trainer toldme he thought I should start competing, Ithought he was joking. Then I decided to gocheck out one of the Irish Drug FreePowerlifting Association's competitions, and Ithought I could maybe give it a go. I neverexpected to hold a national record and berepresenting Ireland at the worldchampionships within a year!".

But it hasn't all been plain sailing. Connolly

qualified for the world championships bylifting the minimum weight required for herweight category. "I didn't have a kilo to spare! But I got in. My training over the summer wasup and down, and I just wasn't feeling quiteright on the day, so my lifts weren't quite ashigh as I'd hoped for the worlds, but theywere enough for me to bring home thetrophy".

Powerlifing is a sport that tests purestrength and is rapidly gaining momentum inIreland over the past 12 months. The IDFPAnow has an impressive 350 members, whoattend regular competitions throughout theyear. The number of women becominginvolved in the sport is steadily increasingtoo. "I'd love to see more women with adesire to become strong. It always amazesme that people don't really associate womenwith strength or sometimes think it's anunfeminine attribute. Being strong of bodymakes you stronger of mind and character. When you feel fit and strong, life is easierand you're more capable of dealing withchallenges that come your way and enjoyinglife to the max."

Powerlifitng involves three lifts. The squat, where the athlete places a barbell on herback and squats down to below parallel (hipjoint below knee joint). The bench press, where the bar must touch the lifter's chestand remain there until a referee calls "Press".And the deadlift, where a loaded barbell islifted from the floor until lock-out. Each lifthas technical standards that much beachieved and commands that must befollowed. Three judges asses each lift beforea white light is given and the lift is passed as"good". At only 5ft 2in and 51.9kg inbodyweight, Connolly lifted an impressive75kg for the squat, 47.5kg for the benchpress and over double her bodyweight of105kg in the deadlift. All eyes will be on theSligo woman for the world championships inMoldova next year as she's hoping to havesignificantly increased her totals in all lifts bythen and return with another gold for Ireland.

Slimmer Of The Year IsRuby

A60-year-old Japanese manswitched at birth in a Toykohospital has told of his shock at

learning the truth of how differenthis life could have been.

After winning a lawsuit againstthe hospital that mistakenly casthim from a wealthy family into a lifeof poverty, the man said: "I've won-dered how on earth could this hap-pen.

"I couldn't believe it. To be hon-est, I didn't want to accept it.

"I might have had a different life.I want (the hospital) to roll back theclock to the day I was born," he toldJapanese media.

A Tokyo district court ordered thehospital to pay 38 million yen(€356,600) in damages over its 1953blunder which saw the manswitched with another baby boy whowas delivered 13 minutes later.

The court ruled that 32 millionyen (€278,780) should go to the manand the rest to his three biological

brothers. It is not clear if the hospi-tal, which has not been named byJapanese media and has not com-mented on the bizarre case, will ap-peal.

The man, an unmarried truckdriver, would have grown up as theeldest of four brothers in a wealthyfamily where siblings enjoyed a lav-ish lifestyle including private tutors.

Instead, he was raised on benefitsby his non-biological mother whoalso supported older siblings afterher husband passed away when hewas two.

The family lived in a one-roomapartment with a radio one of theirfew luxuries, according to the manwho studied at night school whileworking in a factory.

"It was like she was born to expe-rience hardship," the man said ofthe woman he knew as his mother. She is now also dead.

The man has been helping takecare of his non-biological brothers, one of whom suffered a stroke.

The decades-old mistake was un-covered when the wealthy family'sthree younger brothers had DNAtesting done on their oldest sibling -who looked nothing like them - aftertheir parents died.

They checked hospital recordsand confirmed the identity of theirbiological eldest brother last year.

The man switched at birth said hecried daily for several months afterlearning the truth.

"As I saw pictures of my (biologi-cal) parents, I wanted to see themalive. I couldn't hold back tears formonths every time I saw their pic-tures."

One of my brothers "told me thatwe will have 20 more years to liveso we should make up for lost time",he added.

"I was happy to hear that and Iwant to do it."

Judge Masatoshi Miyasaka cut thesize of the award but said he recog-nised the man had lost a chance ofhigher education and had sufferedemotional pain.

The mothers in both families hadseemingly suspected they had beenraising the wrong babies.

"I think my foster mother mighthave sensed it," the man said, not-ing physical differences from thesiblings he grew up with.

His real brothers remember theirmother saying her first baby cameback from his first bath in hospitalwearing the wrong clothes.

Simon Gittany Guilty Of High-Rise MurderA man has been found guilty ofthrowing his fiancee off the balconyof their high-rise apartment in cen-tral Sydney.

Simon Gittany was accused ofhurling Lisa Harnum from their 15thfloor home in a fit of "apoplectic"rage in July 2011 after discoveringshe planned to leave him and re-turn to her native Canada.

Gittany, 40, who was supportedin court by his new girlfriendRachelle Louise, had maintainedthroughout the trial that Ms Har-num, 30, had slipped and fallenafter climbing over a railing.

He said he had tried to save MsHarnum, a former ballerina.

But Justice Lucy McCallum saidthe lack of Ms Harnum's fingerprintson the glass barrier made his claimimplausible.

"At many times in his evidence, the accused struck me as being aperson playing a role, telling a storywhich fitted with the objective evi-dence, but which did no more thanthat," she said. Gittany barely re-acted in court as the verdict was

read out. His current girlfriendscreamed at the judge "You'rewrong", and stormed out of thepacked courtroom. Ms Louise's out-burst continued after she left thecourt. Delivering the verdict in thejudge-only trial, Justice McCallumsaid witness Josh Rathmell, whohad been walking past the apart-ment building on his way to workwhen he saw Ms Harnum fall, gavea compelling account.

At the time, Mr Rathmell thoughthe had seen Gittany "unload" apiece of luggage or rubbish andcontinued on his way. It was onlylater he realised it was a body andcontacted the police.

Justice McCallum said while Git-tany and Ms Harnum had loved eachother, there was no doubt the ac-cused was "controlling, dominatingand at times abusive".

"I am satisfied by the end of July2011, those tensions had reached apoint of crisis," she said.

The New South Wales SupremeCourt heard that Gittany had se-cretly monitored Ms Harnum's

phone and had installed CCTV cam-eras inside and outside their apart-ment. One of the cameras showedGittany restraining Ms Harnum out-side the flat and then dragging herback inside on the night she died.Ms Harnum was heard yelling:"Please help me, help me, God helpme."

Ms Harnum's mother said there

were no winners in the case. Heronly hope was that her daughter'sdeath would be a powerful wake-upcall to other young women."Young women who are caught up insituations like my daughter foundherself in need a voice," Joan Har-num said. Gittany, who was held incustody for the final weeks of thetrial, will be sentenced in February.

Latvia Supermarket Collapse: PM QuitsLatvia's prime minister has resigned over a supermarket roof collapsethat left dozens dead and sparked public outrage.

Valdis Dombrovskis, who has been in power since 2009, said the coun-try needed a change in leadership after the disaster in the capital Riga.

He has overseen a number of spending cuts, including the abolition ofa state construction authority which critics claim may have picked up onpotential building flaws at the supermarket.

Mr Dombrovskis, who is Latvia's longest serving prime minister, deniedhe was pressured into standing down.

"Considering the ... tragedy and all the related circumstances, thecountry needs a government that has majority support in parliamentand can solve the situation that has arisen," he added.

The cause of the collapse at the Maxima supermarket, which killed 54people and wounded at least 40, is subject to a criminal investigation.

Possible explanations for the disaster - the worst since Latvia de-clared its independence in 1991 - include a flawed design and below-parbuilding materials.

A former rescue dog has been crowned thepet slimming champion of the year aftershedding a third of her bodyweight.Ruby the Jack Russell terrier was morbidlyobese after growing to 9.1kg, making hermore than 50% overweight.

After a six-month diet and fitness regimerun by charity PDSA, she has lost 7in from herwaist and weighs in at just over 6kg.

"When Ruby first came to us, we all felt re-ally sorry for her as she'd had such a toughstart to life," said owner Angela Martin, fromSunderland.

"So to compensate, we used to give her alittle treat here and there.

"The trouble was, the whole family wasgiving her 'a little treat' and over time, shestarted to get really big."

Along with 15 other fat pets, the fit clubdid the trick and Ruby has been given a newlease of life.

PDSA senior veterinary surgeon ElainePendlebury said: "This is a fantastic slimmingsuccess story, well done Ruby. Many peoplefall into the trap of overindulging their petwith food as a way of expressing their love.

"Angela and her family have worked reallyhard and have shown that it's never too lateto make a positive change."

Some of the other top slimmers includedCookie the cat, from Middlesbrough, whoshed 17cm from her waistline.

Christmas Lights WorldRecord Reclaimed In Oz

Man Swapped At Birth RegretsLost Life

A family have broken the world record for thenumber of Christmas lights put up on a home- for the second time.

The Richards family, of Canberra, Australia, have installed 502,165 lights around theirhouse and garden.

David Richards, a barrister, started work onstringing the 48km of wires around his prop-erty in early October.

He had previously held the world recordwith 330,000 lights in 2011, but lost it lastyear to a family in New York.

The mammoth display, which is expectedto be seen by tens of thousands of visitors, has been erected to raise money for a chil-dren's charity.

But Mr Richards told the Canberra Timespart of his motivation for spending almostevery weekend working on the project was toreclaim the record.

The family from New York had only man-aged 15,000 more than the Richards' previousrecord last year, so he felt it was an easy tar-get to achieve.

Mr Richards, a father-of-three, told thenewspaper: ''It was sort of a reason to do itagain, and they didn't break it by very much.

''I thought 500,000 was a nice, round num-ber so I decided to go all out because I maynever do it again.''

A representative from Guinness WorldRecords visited the house confirmed the feat.

The display has proved so popular, one cou-ple even got married under it.

Patrick Cormac became hitched to MrRichards' cousin Luana Marriott at the houseunder a blanket of white lights. He said: "Itwas amazing."

Mr Richards said most of his neighbourssupported the display, but some had not spo-ken to him since the last record was set.

He said he bought all the lights himself butwas unwilling to reveal the cost.

The additional cost to his electricity billhowever - an extra £1,400 a month - is beingpicked up by a green energy company.

1. Take a stroll in Ely LodgeForest...Ely Lodge Forest is a pretty quietplace, not very well known bytourists and located only a fewkilometres from Enniskillen. Notethat the forest extends over 250ha by the Lough Erne, and itsplanting began in 1940.

2. Drive near Monea Castle...On the right-hand side, you cansee a photo taken near MoneaCastle. County Fermanagh is stilloverall quite rural and has gotquite a lot of forests, green fieldsand lakes. I thought this view isboth nice and representative ofthis county, despite the grey sky...

3. Visit Enniskillen Town...Enniskillen (from the Irish: InisCeithleann meaning "Ceithleann'sisland") is the County town inCounty Fermanagh. It is located

almost exactly in the centre of thecounty between the Upper andLower sections of Lough Erne. Ithas a population of approximately11,500. On the right-hand side, you can see a photo of a part ofthe town, crossed by River Erne.

4. Visit the buttermarket ofEnniskillen...The buttermarket is an area ofEnniskillen, which has beenconverted into an Irish art andcraft centre, specialised in saleand promotion of Irish andEuropean craft products(paintings, sculptures, vases etc.).There you'll also be able to meetlocal artists.

5. Visit Enniskillen Castle...Enniskillen Castle was built almost600 years ago by Gaelic Maguireschieftains. Guarding one of thefew passes into Ulster, it wasstrategically important throughoutits history. In the 17th century, itbecame an English garrison fortand later served as part of amilitary barracks. This historic sitenow houses 2 museums.

AVENA SATIVA FOR CHRISTMAS STRESSThe mere thought of starting to thinkabout Christmas preparations is enough tostress many people out. The plant extractAvena Sativa acts as a strengthening tonicfor the nervous system at times of extrastress and tension in our lives and is theperfect antidote for an overwrought mindin the days and weeks leading up toChristmas. Avena Sativa might just pro-vide that all essential help that manyneed at this time of year.

CO Q10 FOR CHRISTMAS ENERGYCO Q10 is a nutrient that plays a vital rolein the production of energy within everycell of the body. It increases oxygenationof the brain and heart, aids circulationthroughout the body, stimulates immunityand generally boosts energy. The run up toChristmas is a busy time for all of us and isenough to zap the energy from many. COQ 10 may well provide that boost of “getup and go” whenever it appears to have“got up and gone! “

MILK THISTLE FOR THE CHRISTMASHANGOVERMost of us who drink consume more alco-hol over Christmas than at any other timeof year. And increased alcohol can take itstoll – especially on the poor liver! Milkthistle is well documented for its benefi-cial effect on the liver. This herb helpsthe liver to regenerate itself by stimulat-ing the production of new liver cells. It isalso a potent antioxidant which helps toprotect the liver from the damage causedby toxins such as alcohol.(People on drug medication, which re-quires careful blood level monitoring, arebest to avoid milk thistle. This includes

warfarin and other anticoagulant medica-tion, epilepsy and anticonvulsive medica-tion. Milk thistle is not recommended forlong term use but should be taken insteadin the short term over a couple ofmonths.)

FRANKINCENSE-A REALLY SPECIALCHRISTMAS GIFTThe Bible tells us that frankincense wasone of the gifts brought by the three kingsto the stable in Bethlehem and it plays animportant role in many church cere-monies. The fragrance of frankincensehas a great space cleansing effect and itinduces on the mind a sense of deep calm.Burning this oil in your home will help cre-ate a very welcoming and calming atmos-phere for both you and your Christmasguests. Nuala is a pharmacist registered with thepharmaceutical society of N. Ireland. Shechooses to work within the field of Naturalhealth and may be contacted at NaturesChoice Health shop in Enniskillen.

THE Watergate at En-niskillen CastleEnniskillen isthe County Town of Fer-managh, located almost ex-actly in the Centre of theCounty on the natural islandwhich separates the Upperand Lower sections of LoughErne. Enniskillen is home toa population of approxi-mately 11,500, by far thelargest settlement in theCounty.

The busy Main Street ofEnniskillen with the Town-hall at the top of the hillEn-niskillen town centre isfirmly built along the long,

narrow Main St, which actu-ally changes name six timesalong its length! This givesEnniskillen a real sense ofbustle and life as well asimbuing the shops with theirown unique character. HighStreet Stores sit comfort-ably beside small independ-ent traders, creating aspecial atmosphere for theplace.

One of the key imagesthat a visitor to Enniskillenmay take home with them isthe proximity of the Loughto the town. Moorings justoutside the town centre

certainly ease the pressurefor parking spaces and add acontinental feel to thetown. As one would expect,Enniskillen is a retail centrefor the County, and beyond, and a lively hub of activi-ties, events and things to dothroughout the year. For vis-itors to County Fermanaghand Enniskillen as well aslocal folk planning theirfree time, the followinglinks should help you findout What's Happening in En-niskillen Fermanagh DistrictCouncils What's On/Eventssection has a comprehensiveup-to-date list of all events, exhibitions, etc

Galway City is a thriving, bohemian, cultural city.Along with being a popular

seaside destination with beautifulbeaches and long windingpromenade, it also has a buzzingcosmopolitan city centre. The cityis a joy to explore with itslabyrinthine cobbled streets, colourful shop facades and busycafé/ bar culture.  The city is alsowell known for its many festivalsthroughout the year with hugecrowds gathering for the annualGalway Arts Festival, Races andnumerous other events. OldIreland is present too with turffires and traditional musicfeaturing in many pubs tocompliment your enjoyment of awell earned pint of Guinness. Takean evening stroll along thepromenade and watch the sunsetover Galway Bay or watch the

salmon fishermen in the RiverCorrib from the perfect vantagepoint of the Salmon Weir Bridge

Whether its drama, traditionalmusic, late night clubs or simplysoaking up the vibe on thebustling city streets, you’ll findplenty to do at night in Galway. The Town Hall Theatre is the bestoption for seeing a visitingproduction company’s latestdramatic performance.  There aremany nightclubs dotted aroundEyre Square. Alternatively walkdown Shop street to Latin Quarternear Quay Street and you’ll findplenty of old world bars whereyou can sit by a turf fire and joinin the craic.

A welcome escape...Time passes easily when you stopby the Salmon Weir Bridge and

study the steadfast fishermenjostle with the tumbling RiverCorrib below. The Corrib rivermeets the crystal waters of theAtlantic Ocean at the SpanishArch, where small fishing boatsand wild birds provide an idyllicbackdrop to the famousshimmering sunsets over GalwayBay.

The MarketGalway's famous bustling markethas been trading in Church lane bySt. Nicholas' Church in the centreof the city for literally centuries. You will find hundreds of stallsselling fresh produce and locallyproduced crafts. There's a greatvariety of food available, Madrascurry, Yummy Crepes, JapaneseSushi, and mouth-wateringhandmade cookies among manyothers ... or you can buy theingredients for a deliciousgourmet picnic. Many peoplecome to the market to chat aswell as to shop and it's a goodplace to meet local artisans andhear local issues discussed. The market is open Saturdays andBank Holidays from 8am to 6pmand Sundays 12 noon to 6pm. TheChristmas Market runs every dayfrom 9am to 6pm between the 14& 24 December with lots ofhomemade Christmas foodstuffsand a lovely atmosphere with allthe decorated stalls lit with

mainly battery powered lights andcandles.

Spanish Arch & Medieval WallsFraming the river east of WolfeTone Bridge, the Spanish Arch isthought to be an extension ofGalway's medieval walls. The archappears to have been designed asa passageway through which shipsentered the city to unload goods, such as wine and brandy fromSpain.Today it reverberates to the beatof bongo drums, and the lawnsand riverside form a gatheringplace for locals and visitors on anysunny day. Many watch kayakers manoeuvreover the minor rapids of the RiverCorrib.Although a 1651 drawing ofGalway clearly shows its extensivefortifications, depredation byCromwell and William of Orangeand subsequent centuries ofneglect saw the walls almostcompletely…

Eyre SquareIn the Galway city centre, there isa square public park. The plot wasofficially presented to the city in1710 by Mayor Edward Eyre, fromwhom the park originally took itsname. In 1965, the square wasofficially renamed "John F.Kennedy Memorial Park". There is a memorial to President

John F. Kennedy on the spotwhere he addressed the people ofGalway on 29 June 1963 shortlybefore his assassination in Dallas,Texas on 22 November 1963.Despite the official name change, the park is still mostly referred toas Eyre Square. It is difficult to overestimate theimportance of the visit to Galwayby President Kennedy. In part, thesignificance is due to the strongconnection between Ireland andthe United States as a result ofthe large number of emigrants. Asthe first US President of IrishCatholic descent, PresidentKennedy was a great source ofpride for the people of theRepublic of Ireland.

Boddingtons beer, met Mr Cockings online wherehe tweets as @bespokespartan after he asked herout on a date.

His Twitter page now appears to have beendeactivated.

In an interview earlier this year, Sykes said:"'There are people who will always be cynicalabout my relationship with Jack because of howwe got together.

"But he makes me happier than I've ever beenand if I'm happy, my boys are happy, it's a bigcircle - and that's all that matters."

Sykes has appeared on shows including Let's DoLunch with Gino and Mel, The Big Breakfast andToday with Des and Mel.

She also had a stint on BBC Radio 2 with AlanCarr.

She has two children from her marriage toItalian actor Daniel Caltagirone, which ended in2009.

Melanie Sykes Cautioned OverHusband Assault

Arapper who jumped from a lighting rig andinjured two people has apologised for his"stupid and wildly irresponsible" stunt.

George Watsky climbed a rope ladder beforeleaping into the crowd at Alexandra Palace innorth London during a performance at the VansWarped Tour.

The 30ft fall broke a girl's arm and leftanother fan in hospital, although Watsky himselfescaped with only "nicks, bruises and the shameof endangering the crowd".

In a lengthy apology posted to his Facebookpage, the musician said: "The jump was notawesome, it was not badass and it was notballsy. "It turned what should have been a greatday for the people who got hurt into anightmare. "It was stupid and wildlyirresponsible, plain and simple."

Video of Watsky's jump has already beenviewed more than 180,000 times on YouTube.

The stunt was described as "pretty idiotic","dumb" and "definitely stupid" by some users,

although many of his 200,000 fans on Facebookexpressed their support for the star following hisapology.

Conceding that it was "extremely lucky" noone was more seriously injured, Watsky wrote:"Putting your own body on the line is one thing, but putting other people in harm's way isinexcusable." He said he would not be cancellingany of his forthcoming tour dates but insisted he"will not be jumping off anything".

"I am deeply sorry and I promise to learn fromthis mistake," he added.

Watsky said he spent six hours waiting at thehospital while the injured man was seen bydoctors and planned to return to the ward toapologise to him. The artist, who is originallyfrom San Francisco but now lives in Los Angeles, describes himself as a "versatile lyricist whoswitches between silly and serious, technicallycomplex and simply heartfelt". His self-titled hiphop track Watsky reached number seven on aspecialist iTunes chart in 2010.

OJ Simpson faces at leastfour more years in prisonafter a judge rejected his

bid for a new trial in his Las Vegasarmed robbery and kidnappingconviction.Simpson claimed his lawyers inthe original trial wereincompetent and botched hisdefence."All grounds in the petition lackmerit and, consequently, aredenied," Clark County DistrictJudge Linda Marie Bell said in herruling.

The former football star plans

to appeal the ruling to theNevada Supreme Court.

"We're confident that when weget to the right court we'll getrelief because he deserves relief, because he didn't get a fair trial,"Simpson's lawyer Patricia Palmsaid.

Simpson was found guilty ofkidnapping, armed robbery andother charges in what he said wasan attempt to retrievememorabilia and personal itemsfrom two sports collectiblesdealers in a casino hotel room. Hewas sentenced to nine to 33 years

in Nevada state prison. A boardgranted parole on someconvictions in July, but the 66-year-old must serve at least fourmore years locked up. He isimprisoned at LovelockCorrectional Center. Simpson wasacquitted in 1995 in the stabbingdeaths of his ex-wife, NicoleBrown Simpson, and her friendRonald Goldman. The Los Angelescase was dubbed the "trial of thecentury".Years later, a jury inMiami acquitted him of allcharges in a Florida road ragecase.

Iconic compilation album Now is marking30 years since it first pulled togetherthe day's biggest pop hits.

Now That’s What I Call Music 1 hit shops onNovember 28, 1983 and featured 30 hitsingles from that year on double vinyl andcassette. It featured artists such as PhilCollins, Culture Club, Duran Duran, UB40,Men at Work, and Kajagoogoo.

Katy Perry song Roar is the first track onNow 86, which was released last week.

Record producer Pete Waterman told SkyNews: "All my artists appeared on the Nowalbums. Every one of them.

"The Now albums for us as an independ-ent record company were a fantastic extrasource of income.

"When your record had stopped selling, you would put them on the Now album andthey would give you another 25-30% in-come. "But there was a lot of politics in-volved. You basically had to be in the topfive to get on the album but it became afabulous bartering tool.

"They wanted your big artists so wewould say 'well you can have that one butonly if you also take this one', so it was agood tool for getting new artists, whomight have only been in the top 20, an-other broader field."

The music industry might have changed

enormously since the 1980s but the appealof the Now brand has been consistent.

This summer's Now 85 is the biggest sell-ing Now album ever, with Daft Punk's GetLucky and Robin Thicke's Blurred Lines onthe track list. Artist album sales are cur-rently down 7.2% on this time last year.

Singles are also struggling - but sales ofcompilation albums are up 7.7% year onyear. For some it might be an unexpectedtrend but the managing director of NowMusic, Peter Duckworth, says consumerswant popular music to be curated.

"In an era of downloads, when peoplesaid a few years ago that it's the end ofthe compilation because people can nowchoose their tracks from iTunes, they'vebeen proved wrong.

"Now has gone from strength to strengthin the digital era because whilst you canbuy every track on iTunes or listen to themon Spotify, people want some guidance andhelp."If you are faced with 15 million tracks tochoose from, Now helps you choose."The inspiration for the name Now That'sWhat I Call Music came from a 1920s ad-vertisement for Danish Bacon. The pig became a mascot on the earlysleeves of the Now albums and still makesthe occasional appearance.

USED car imports aresteadily racking up thenumbers. So far 46,583

have been brought in -- 10,000more than this time last year.

It is safe to say they will top50,000 before December 31.There is huge demand for thelikes of the Ford Focus(2,764), Audi A4 (2,513),Volkswagen Passat (2,443) andGolf (2,000), according toMotorcheck.ie figures.

Which makes it all the moreperplexing why theGovernment rejected effortsto increase new-car sales athome (remember swappage?)where it would get a lot moretax revenue.

The Department of Financetold Independent Motors itdidn't believe there would beenough demand for new cars -- even though they wouldeffectively be €4,000 lessexpensive when the proposedVRT rebate and dealerincentives were included.

Offering operatorcomfort, fuel efficiencyand low operating

costs, these tractors will beof interest to top-endcontractors and benefit froma style which has beendeveloped and refined incollaboration with anotherItalian firm, Giugiaro Design.Deutz-Fahr are pitching thenew models as being able toprovide as strongperformances when workingwith big, power-sappingploughs or deep subsoilers asthey do when powering highcapacity cultivator drills.Power is provided by Deutz'sTCD 7.8 litre twin turbo sixcylinder engines that arecompliant with Tier 4 finalemission regulations andemploy four valves percylinder. These engines are

turbocharged and intercooledand use an integratedelectronic control for theircommon rail injectionsystem.

A large fuel tank capacitymeans uninterrupted days canbe spent in the field, while anew electronically controlledcooling system ensures thatmaximum efficiency and lowfuel consumption is achieved.

PRECISIONFast reactions with safety

and precision are thecharacteristics of the newTerramatic continuouslyvariable transmission. Alsohelping to reduce fuelconsumption is a PTO packagewhich offers three speeds of540E/1000/1000E.

Conditions on the road and

in the field changecontinuously, but Deutz-Fahrclaims the Nine series has gotthe driving dynamics to cope, thanks to its front axlesuspension system.

For stopping the tractorthere is the power brakebraking system whichrequires only a small input tobring the tractor safely to ahalt.

The brake department alsoincludes an electronic parkingbrake, while disc brakes onthe front axle in the 60kphversion make an importantcontribution to brakingperformance.

The hydraulic systememploys a 210l/min load-sensing pump operating at200 bar and up to seven

auxiliary distributors, ofwhich four provide amaximum flow of 150l/minand three with a flow of upto 100l/min.

A 90l hydraulic system oiltank is independent of thetransmission oil reservoir andas a result, prevents dust orgrime entering via theauxiliary distributors.Maximum lifting capacity atthe ball end of the quick fitrear arms is rated at12,000kg.

A newly designed cabfurther enhances the Nineseries tractors with a singlepiece windshield providinggood all-round visibility.Additional options include a12" touchscreen monitor anda GPS navigation system.

Falling foal numbers and theintroduction of elite salesspecifically targeting show-jumping

buyers resulted in a 42pc increase in theaverage auction price of foals in 2013,new research has shown.

The average price of foals sold atauction in Cavan and Goresbridge thisyear was €1,577/hd, according to Teagascequine specialist Declan McArdle.

But when the results of elite foal salessuch as the Irish Breeders Classic sale andthe Cavan Elite Foal sale were included, the average sale price increased to€2,242/hd, a hike of 42pc, delegates atthe Teagasc National Equine Conferencein Tullamore were told.

The average price of a foal sold in the

elite sales was €5,239, more than threetimes the average of the foal sold in thenon-elite sales.

Mr McArdle said the introduction ofelite sales had brought breeders andbuyers together and was a successfultemplate that should be followed infuture years.

Falling foal numbers were also a factorin the upturn in foal sales for 2013, headded. Sport horse foal numbers fell tojust over 5,000 in 2013 -- just half of the10,424 sport horse foals registered in2008 -- as breeders ratchet back on foalproduction. Despite the increase in foalprices, the vast majority of foals sold atauction are not capable of returning anyprofit.

The cash costs of producing a foal toweaning stage amount to €1,651/hd,according to Teagasc research. Thismeans the average foal selling for€1,577/hd at normal sales actually costshis breeder €74. But the picture isbleaker than that, because the€1,651/hd does not include the cost oflabour, land or stud fee for the foal.

Mr McArdle told the conference that, assuming an average stud fee of €1,200,only the top 20pc of foals sold in Irelandthis year would have yielded any returnfor their breeders.

Teagasc , Horse Sport Ireland and theRDS are drafting a strategic plan for thesport horse sector in Ireland, which isdue to be published in 2014.

HEARING is the ability to per-ceive sound by detecting vi-brations through an organ

such as the ear. It is one of the tra-ditional five senses. The inability tohear is called deafness. Most peo-ple are prone to loss-of-hearing orgetting bad hearing as they getolder. Hearing cannot be restoredwith medicines. In such case, youwill need hearing aids to compen-sate for your lack of hearing. Thisarticle will talk about the thingsyou can do to improve your hearingnow, while it's still fully functional.

Here are five assorted tips anddrills you can do to make sure youmaintain your hearing ability.

Maintenance is ImportantAvoid loud noises, as these can

damage your eardrums. Listeningto loud music or with plug-in head-phones as opposed to the foam orrubber types that just nestle onyour ears is a quick way to losehearing. Being subjected to incred-ibly loud, shrill, and irritatingnoises every day such as powertools in your workplace or road-works are detrimental to yourhearing. Avoid them at all cost.Regular EENT (eyes, ears, nose& throat) Check-ups

Add visiting an EENT doctor toyour list of bi-annual check-upsalongside your usual ones, like vis-its to the dentist and general med-ical check-ups. This helps maintainall your senses, not just hearing.EENTs can give you preventive

medications to treat any mild prob-lems you may have with hearingbefore these worsen.

Vitamins and MedicationThere are four vitamins and med-

ications that have been tested andproven to help in the maintenanceof hearing. These haven't beennoted to significantly enhance aperson's hearing acuity, but theyhave been known to prevent thedeterioration of hearing ability. These four vitamins, with corre-sponding dosages, are the follow-ing: Acetyl-Carnitine (150mg aday), Alpa-Lipoic acid (150 mg aday), Glutathione (50 mg a day),and Coenzyme Q10 (60 mg a day).Sound Source Location Exercise

Here is the first drill for sharpen-ing your hearing. This helps yourear's directional sense and requiresa partner. Get some small noise-maker like a horn or even a smallradio speaker. Go to a large room

with very little acoustic bounce offand furniture. If you can do this inan open-air environment so muchthe better, but you'll look a bitfunny to any passer-by so you mightwant to find a private spot.

Now, the drill is simple. Startingat a regular distance get your part-ner to sound off small two or three-second bursts around you. Thenjust point where the noise camefrom. Limit your choices initially tothe eight compass points (includingnortheast etc). Later on, vary thedrill by having your partner alterthe distance at which he soundsoff. You should not only name di-rections, but the approximate dis-tance away from where the noisewas made.

Noise Filtering ExerciseThis drill is for filtering sound and

it's simple to do also. Tune in to astation that plays a moderately fastmusic. It shouldn’t be too loud. Then, talk to a friend. Do not raiseyour voice and carry on a conversa-tion without leaning in to hear-bet-ter. Then after a few minutes, adda second radio playing a differentmusic. Then later throw in athird... you get the picture. Thishelps you filter out any extraneousnoise and improves your ear's abil-ity to pick out only the sounds youwant to hear.
