Welcome This issue has been a particularly exciting one to work on, as it features exclusive beauty secrets from Bobbi Brown (one of my business heroes), fashion tips from the ever-stylish Alex Gerrard,

plus a bold black-and-white style shoot and two inspiring readers’ makeovers. In between the urry of interviews, photoshoots and makeovers, the His & Hers team slipped away from our desks for a few hours in April to meet our readers during a big magazine handout at Cavern Walks. We were joined by the promo team from Think Faces, who handed out hundreds of copies of the magazine, and gave a special prize worth more than £100 to the rst person to pick up their copy. We had so much fun that we’ll be holding another handout in May (follow us on Twitter & Facebook for details). Highlights of this issue include our exclusive interview with internationally renowned beauty guru Bobbi Brown on p6, our fashion Q&A with Alex Gerrard on p 22, our kaliedascope style shoot from p10 and our dramatic menswear makeovers from p32. We hope you enjoy this edition – we’ll be back with more exclusive interviews, fabulous fashion, plus news and reviews in your area on 12th June.See you next month!

Find out why makeup legend Bobbi Brown believes true beauty “isn’t about looking like a 20-something Barbie doll”, and why northern women just can’t get enough of this no-nonsense approach to looking

HIS&HERS INTERVIEW

In recent months, the tabloid press has delighted in slamming northern style, stating that there’s nothing subtle about our approach to makeup or fashion (using unfl attering pictures from Ladies’ Day at Aintree to drive

home the point). However, take a closer look at the brands that do best in the region and you’ll fi nd that it’s those like Bobbi Brown, which we associate with understated glamour, that are leading the pack.

Bobbi Brown has based her beauty empire on the philosophy of having confi dence in yourself and playing up the qualities that make you unique, a refreshingly honest and unpretentious approach to looking good, which has resonated here in the North West.

Bobbi told His & Hers: “I think Liverpool’s a beautiful city and I hope to come back and visit soon.” However, she added that she hasn’t changed her approach to suit the northern market, saying: “It doesn’t matter where you are, my philosophy and my vision of beauty is always about encouraging a woman to fi nd out who she is, to make herself look better. It’s not cookie cutter beauty where this is the colour of the season, and this is how you wear it.”

His & Hers wanted to fi nd out more about the woman behind the brand, so we were delighted when Bobbi agreed to answer all of our beauty questions...

MY GOAL WHEN I STARTED THIS COMPANY WAS TO

MAKE WOMEN FEEL BETTER ABOUT THEMSELVES, AND I PLAN ON DOING THAT FOR AS LONG AS I’M ABLE TO.

HIS&HERS INTERVIEW

MY GOAL WHEN I STARTED THIS COMPANY WAS TO

& : You’ve had a stellar career. Do you have any advice for those starting out in the beauty industry today?BOBBI: I’m oft en asked what advice I would give to someone looking to start their own business. I was a sponge, learning and experimenting. I read and studied every fashion spread. You need a unique idea, you need to be passionate, and you have to be willing to work hard. And most important, you need to trust your gut.

& : Aft er graduating with a qualifi cation in theatrical makeup, you forged a successful career as a professional makeup artist. What were the highs and lows of this period? BOBBI: By the late ‘80s I was working with the industry’s top photographers and models; I had four agents and was travelling regularly for shoots. My fi rst big break was on a story for Glamour magazine that was shot by Bridgette Lacombe. Around this time I realised I wanted to work closer to home. I remember when I said enough: I was newly married and was off ered a three-week job in Bali with Ralph Lauren and Bruce Webber. I didn’t want to leave my husband so, aft er much agony, I said no.

MY GOAL WHEN I STARTED

ABOUT THEMSELVES, AND I PLAN

Page 8: Northern Style edition

HIS&HERS INTERVIEW

& : What inspired you to create your own makeup line? BOBBI: In the eighties, the makeup was very strong. As a working makeup artist in New York, I found that I couldn’t fi nd the right shades of foundation, or the perfect lip colour to use on models. I always had to “fi x” shades and formulas before I applied them to models’ skin. All the foundations were too pinky and the lip colours were never quite what I wanted. So, I started by mixing my own lip colour - the fi rst shade was Brown #4. The models loved it, and before I knew it, I’d developed a range of 10 lipstick shades.

& : You’re known for your belief that “beauty isn’t about looking perfect. It’s about celebrating your individuality.” Do you think that the pressure to look perfect has increased over the past 10 years? BOBBI: I think that we are a society obsessed with perfection. Being beautiful isn’t about having fl awless, cookie-cutter looks. It’s about having self-confi dence and playing up the qualities that make you unique. Ultimately, beauty is a state of mind. True beauty isn’t about looking like a supermodel or a 20-something Barbie doll. It’s about accepting and feeling good about who you are.

& : Which makeup products do you turn to when you need an instant boost? BOBBI: Concealer is the secret of the beauty universe. A good concealer can make the most immediate and dramatic diff erence to how you look. It lightens up dark circles, brightens up your face, and makes you look well-rested. Look for a creamy formula that’s yellow-based and one shade lighter than your skin tone. It works by lightening the dark, thinner skin under your eyes; giving the illusion that the skin is actually the same colour as the rest of your face and making you look less tired.

& : Which products should every woman have in her makeup bag?

BOBBI: Concealer, to cover dark circles, blush (it’s the easiest way to look pretty and radiant), SPF balm or moisturiser, and bronzer - it makes you look healthy and relaxed.

& : Your ‘beauty bibles’ are best-sellers & we hear there’s another on its way. Can you give us any hints? BOBBI: I am currently working on my next book which is about making real women feel ‘Pretty Powerful’.

& : Do you still have any unfulfi lled ambitions? BOBBI: My goal when I fi rst started this company was to make women feel better about themselves, and I plan on doing that for as long as I’m able to. Hwww.bobbibrown.co.uk

Following His & Hers’ interview with Bobbi Brown, rumours began to circulate that hers was the makeup brand worn by the bridal party at the Royal Wedding. As speculation intensi ed, Bobbi Brown released the following statement: “We are excited to share this news with you... Bobbi Brown makeup artist Hannah Martin provided makeup artistry assistance to members of the bridal party

for the Royal Wedding. We wish to respect the privacy of all those involved and we will not be releasing further details.”Despite a Paxman-style interrogation, we weren’t able to get our hands on a list of all the products used on the bridal party (curse those con dentiality agreements!) However, the Bobbi Brown team did share their tips for creating a royal-worthy look for brides...

MOLLY, 17 StudentAt just 17, Mollly is quickly earning her fashion stripes with this bold look. Her colourful H&M leggings and bright turquoise shoes add extra punk to her New Look biker jacket, and her edgy crop makes Molly a true fashionista. Ten out of ten, girl!

SARAH, 27 StylistHere at His & Hers we can spot a fashionista a mile away and in these bold Henry Holland tights it would be hard not to! We loved Sarah’s use of casual classics to achieve a laidback yet stylish look. Adding HH tights and a fuchsia jacket adds a dash of tongue-in-cheek fun to the outfi t.

This month Liverpool’s fashion lovers have ditched their little black dresses and embraced spring’s vibrant new shades.

LOUISE GILLESPIEMums would do anything for their daughters, so when her daughter was struggling to nd a part time job, Louise Gillespie took matters into her own hands and decided to set up her own business, creating her a job. Working during the day at a rm of solicitors, by night, Louise, along with daughter Jessica, runs Jessie’s Jewels. The concept is similar to that of Avon; customers hold parties and the girls go along and sell beautiful costume jewellery at a ordable prices. The idea arose from a shopping trip, “I couldn’t believe how expensive it was” Louise explains, “I just thought I could sell jewellery much more a ordably and still make a pro t.” So Louise went to The Women’s Organisation, who o ered advice and helped put together a business plan.Currently, the majority of the jewellery is sourced in the UK. However, Louise hopes that soon they will be able to buy pieces from China and India. She is con dent that the company will continue to thrive and become a huge success. Jessica seems to agree too, “I’m pleased that mum has set the business up and I enjoy working with her; in the future I hope that I can take on more of an active role. I think other mums and daughters should de nitely think about doing the same thing!”www.jessies-jewels.co.uk

SARAH OGLEYou might not know her, but if you’ve seen a show at Liverpool’s Everyman or Playhouse theatres, chances are, Sarah Ogle, as Director of Communications and Sales, has essentially told you about the show and sold you the ticket!

During Sarah’s teens, she dreamt that one day she would be running one of the theatres, so a er studying Theatre Arts & English at university, Sarah got a job as marketing assistant at The Everyman. Since then Sarah has worked in theatres all over the North West before returning home in 2002.

Sarah now heads up a team responsible for letting the public know what’s on, selling tickets and supporting community and fundraising teams.

And it seems there’s no typical day; one minute she could be looking at designs and attending artistic planning meetings, the next analysing sales data.

So surely there are some perks to working in a theatre? “There are plenty! I love the thrill of a successful opening night, it’s both nerve wracking and thrilling. I’ve seen some remarkable performances and worked with so many fabulous and talented people.”

Sarah already feels she has her dream job. She’s looking forward to making the new Everyman theatre a reality in 2013 and “helping rebuild their audiences and reputations for an exciting future.” Sounds good to us! www.everymanplayhouse.com

His&Hers interview

Queenof the little black dress

Often referred to as the ‘über-WAG’, Alex Gerrard (wife of england footballer Steven Gerrard) has spent her 20s in the media spotlight, so she’s used to stirring up the kind of press-storm usually reserved for MPs and their expenses at the

merest hint of a weight fluctuation or a new fashion direction. Dealing with this kind of flak on a daily basis can’t be

much fun, but could it be the unlikely secret to the success of Alex’s new Couture Collection for Forever unique?

His & Hers can vouch for the fact that we’ve never seen Alex look less than (sickeningly) trim, toned and camera-ready in the flesh, but despite this, if she makes one wrong fashion move, or gains so much as a post-baby pound, Alex faces a swarm of paparazzi and fashion editors circling like sharks faster than you can say “mummy tummy”.

And this, believe it or not, is why Alex could be our new queen of the little black dress. She’s seen every celebrity fashion pitfall (from exiting a car in a short skirt to trying too hard), she’s made a few fashion blunders of her own in her time, and you sense that at 28, Alex now knows far better than to put a foot wrong.

Her Forever unique collection is as close as you’ll come to finding a universally flattering range of designs. There isn’t a single gown in the collection that is short enough to give you a moment’s worry when stepping out of a taxi, and every piece has been designed to enhance your favourite parts, while artfully skimming over the rest.

The Couture range is available online, but as the dresses are investment pieces (with prices ranging from £250 to £550) and quite heavily tailored, we’d advise calling in to Boudoir Boutique, the exclusive Liverpool stockists of the range, to ensure you find the perfect fit before making your selection.

Once you’ve slipped into your perfect L.B.D, add a slick of red lipstick, and your spring/summer fashion armour will be in place.

With her sell-out clothing range for Forever unique

hitting the headlines, Alex Gerrard shares her tips for fashion confidence with His & Hers. words: emma hill

His&Hers interview

& : You must be asked to put your name to clothing lines all the time. What made the opportunity to collaborate with Forever unique stand out? Alex: I love to get glammed up and Forever unique are known for their glitzy, glamorous dresses so it was a perfect collaboration! Their designs are really flirty and fun so it was great to be able to put my own style stamp on the collection.

& : How involved were you in the design process?Alex: I had a lot of input into the design process, choosing all of the fabrics, shapes and patterns. The design team would make up the samples and I would try them on, making alterations where I thought they needed to look or fit differently.

& : The Forever unique dresses we’ve seen you modeling all feature some great tailoring and cinched in waists. Do you think women feel more confident when wearing structured pieces like this?Alex: I think a structured dress definitely adds a great shape. Clinched in waists and dramatic shoulders are really flattering and give a gorgeous silhouette – the dresses from my collections are styles women should definitely feel confident wearing!

& : Have you worn any of your designs to social functions and if so, what feedback did you get?Alex: I’m planning to wear a piece from the Couture range to the celebrity launch at Selfridges this month. They’ve had great feedback from other celebs too – Brooke Vincent, una Healy, emma Bunton and Chantelle Houghton have all worn pieces from the range.

& : Victoria Beckham faced a lot of skepticism when she first launched her fashion line, which went on to become phenomenally successful. Do you think people are surprised to see women who’ve been labeled WAGs in the press launch sophisticated and successful fashion lines? Alex: My Forever unique designs have always reflected my own style so it’s amazing that they’ve been so well received. The new collection comprises a Couture range which is even more sophisticated – I think people might be surprised at how luxurious they are!

& : Which are your favourite clothing stores in the north West?Alex: Obviously I’m a bit biased, but I love Forever unique which is a Manchester-based label, and I’m a huge fan of Cricket in Cavern Walks, Liverpool.

& : What’s on your fashion & beauty wish-list this season?Alex: I love all the colour-blocking this season, so trousers, a top and blazer in jewel colours are definitely on my wish list! I’ll need to stock up on some summer essentials, too, like floral dresses and a denim gilet – my Festival Collection has some fab pieces that are perfect for summer daywear. I’ll also be wearing my embellished structured dresses to glam events.

His&Hers beauty

Here at His & Hers we’re constantly receiving emails regarding the latest ‘miraculous’ weight-loss treatments (is someone trying to tell us something?) Generally such emails are filed under ‘spam’ in less time than it takes to reach for the biscuit tin.

However, when an email arrived inviting us to check out a ‘Zeltiq CoolSculpting’ treatment at Tracey Bell’s Liverpool salon we were willing to suspend our scepticism.

For starters, this treatment’s already established in the States, where it’s been used for some time to target stubborn areas of fat that are resistant to exercise, and we know that most beauty crazes that take America by storm ultimately do rather well over here. Also, we were impressed that the Tracey Bell team was willing to let us watch a treatment in progress, talk to clients who’ve lost weight using Zeltiq and view their ‘before and after’ photographs.

His & Hers watched a therapist apply an applicator to a client’s stomach (reassuring us that this is a non-invasive treatment with no needles or surgical incisions). The client commented that the treatment was completely pain-free, although it apparently gives a “slightly strange sensation on the skin.”

After one treatment skin looks slightly tighter and firmer, but we were told that you can expect to see a more noticeable reduction in stubborn areas of fat within two to four months.

THe His & Hers VerdicT: We’d recommend this treatment if you have stubborn areas of fat that are resistant to dieting and exercise. For those on a tight budget, there’s no denying that sit-ups are a more cost effective option, but if you’re happy to invest a little time and money on toning up then this treatment does deliver results without pain or effort, which is more than we can say for most weight-loss systems!CoolSculpting by Zeltiq is available from Tracey Bell. Situated at the top of Bold Street, Italian Club Fish is the second little gem opened by the Crolla family, who are behind the much-loved Italian Club.

WORDS: emma griffiths

CatCH of tHe day

With influences taken from the family’s Scottish-Italian roots, the restaurant features classic white pine furniture mixed with seaside ornaments and framed

portraits of the great Italian film stars, giving you the impression of La Dolce Vita at the seaside.

Seated at a cosy corner table, we perused the menu and were met with a plethora of fish dishes as well as a selection for those of you who aren’t too fish-friendly. We opted for the Capesante Scozia (grilled Scottish king scallops with Stornaway black pudding, crispy bacon and a watercress salad) and Gamberoni aglio e olio (pan fried king prawns with garlic, chilli, parsley and lemon). Light, fresh and with a bit of a kick, my prawns were perfect

and the scallops went down just as well. Moving on to the main feature we both decided to sample the grilled fish on the specials menu. The Sea Bass and Sea Bream were calling out to us from a wide selection of freshly caught fish; they were beautifully cooked, crispy skinned morsels served with two side dishes. I would highly recommend the asparagi di mare (sea asparagus) to accompany your dish; although rather odd looking, it was divine as well as a little different to the run-of-the-mill vegetable dishes found elsewhere. Finishing off with a rich cafe americano and torta valter - a warm chocolate and almond cake served with cream - and an Italian Club classic, we were sad to leave the warm, friendly atmosphere but will be returning for another Italian welcome very soon. www.theitalianclubfish.co.uk

Set in a quiet area of New Brighton, 70 Victoria Parade feels far removed from the hustle and bustle of Liverpool city centre (which is a mere 25 minute drive away). Picturesque, peaceful, but not perhaps the first place you’d

go looking for a modern restaurant, this backwater location is the first surprise about 70 Victoria Parade.

The second surprise is the sleek modern interior and the pleasant hum of conversation from diners who’ve travelled from miles around to sample the house specialties on a quiet Wednesday evening.

My dining companion opted for an indulgent meat feast pizza which was served on a large wooden platter and had a pleasantly rustic appearance, while I chose a delicious sweet roasted vegetable and pistachio nut

tagliatelle, served with a choice of sauces. We were both silenced by our tasty mains, and spent the next 20 minutes tucking into our generously proportioned dishes, both of which had been prepared with top-quality seasonal ingredients by a chef who clearly knows his stuff.

As we ate, we overheard fellow diners chatting excitedly about the quality of their meals, and we were in full agreement.

Sadly we were far too full to sample the new dessert menu (be warned, the portions are very generous), but we’re already looking forward to showing off this hidden gem to our family and friends, and finally sampling a dessert or two in the process.www.70victoriaparade.co.uk

A WAterfront GemLocated on the New Brighton waterfront, 70 Victoria Parade offers diners unrivalled views across the Mersey, but it’s the quality of the

food that’s set tongues wagging in the local area.WORDS: emma hill, PICTURES: James Byrne

His&Hers social diary

Here at His & Hers, we consider the ability to make at least one perfect cocktail to be one of the more important life skills, so when we heard about Malmaison’s new masterclass we were eager to get in

some practice with a cocktail shaker. We were among the first to arrive at last month’s mixology class (showing our commitment to our craft!) and were greeted with some delicious Kir Royales and Mal munchies, before we were shown to a table to watch Bar Manager Kris Fitzsimmons work his magic.Kris made several of the Mal’s most requested cocktails,

including Cosmopolitans, Mint Mojitos and Whiskey Sours, then inviting guests to join him behind the bar to put our cocktail-making skills to the test – this was a little like being back at school, but far more fun! We then spent a relaxing evening sipping our creations.Kris Fitzsimmons said “tonight was a fabulous fun evening where I taught everyone that it’s not rocket science to create the perfect cocktail!”

Perfect for corporate entertaining, team building or just taking the next step, so if you think it’s time for a lesson contact Malmaison Liverpool on 0151 229 5000 to book your masterclass.

With diverse in uences everywhere we look, it can be di cult to know when we get it right and when we simply don’t.

With 18 years under his belt, Mikey is still at school and has to make sure he looks the part and keeps his street cred – something I know was far more important to me than potential university placements

and those dreaded A-levels! Mikey’s striking look instantly

caught my eye but I knew his heavy hair didn’t accentuate his facial features. Whilst his look may have passed on the playground, I chose Firetrap to completely overhaul his image – creating a multifunctional laidback, grungy collection that would look equally at home on a catwalk or at a skateboard park.

At the age of just 20, Robert boasted a wardrobe that was as uninspiring as his glasses. Currently studying for a degree in town planning, he will soon be penning job applications and those all-important rst impressions will count. I caught him just in time to show him an out t that would truly be t a trendy yet sophisticated urbanisation developer of tomorrow.

With various rowing accolades under his belt but battling the transition of growing into a new-age man, I knew there was an inner warrior trapped inside that geeky façade ... somewhere! It was not hard to show Robert how to balance the right amount of coi ng with the understated yet classic style of Tommy Hil ger. The look stays true to his sporting roots and has opened up a whole new way of getting about town!

ed, 20 Graphic Design Student We found ed looking very chilled, possibly pondering his next graphic creation. Relaxing in his American Apparel top, All Saints T-shirt and Topman pants, ed is a shining example of how to pull off the popular over-the-ears hat to complete any look on a breezy day.

MICHAeL, 18Retail OperativeWe caught up with Michael as he was rocking the androgynous look in Liverpool ONe. His skinny jeans and chain (from Topman) are tucked into his studded boots from River Island and add a great detail to the punk-look. With his Union Jack bag, Michael was definitely feeling patriotic ahead of the Royal Wedding.

GAvIN, 29 process technician Although I still am unsure what a process technician is, I am sure Gavin is one of the more trendy ones! Sporting an Australian accent, Gavin pulled off his beach-look in denim Zara shorts, a two-tone horizontal stripe T-shirt from Urban Outfitters and Adidas shoes.

JOSé, 19 p.e Student With his not-so-modest outlook, José was not letting the language barrier get in the way of anything and he was more than willing to show the world what he had to offer. With his Zara jeans and Pull & Bear top, this Spanish chico did not fail to impress when asked to strike a pose.

LOUIS, 29 Wardrobe Master After enjoying a show-stopping evening watching Thriller at Liverpool’s empire Theatre, it came as a great surprise when I approached Louis, and discovered he was part of the tour. Not called a wardrobe master for nothing, Louis teamed his graphic cardigan from Zara with washed-out River Island jeans.”

PAUL, 31 ArchitectWith his casual elegance, Paul could write the book on sophisticated daywear. In Timberland loafers that we’re sure to spot everywhere this summer, Paul rounds off his look with classic Ray-Bans, a Fred Perry cardi and a peek of his vintage Levis shirt.
