News From BoYNe

Zipping at BOYNE

By DaNIEllE KapRalSpecial to NM Winter Life

The winter snows came a little bit later this year than last, but when they came they came in a big way making for a quick turn-on of northern Michigan’s ski and snowboard resorts.

Nub’s Nob, Boyne Highlands and Boyne Mountain all opened for the season on Friday, Dec. 11 this year, following a week of heavy snow that turned a warm November into a wintery December.

Ski resort folks made it clear that they expect nothing but the best this year.

“We are hopeful for a great winter. We were off to a slow start, but with all the recent snowfall we had our phones ring-ing with reservations,” said Brad Keen, general manager of Boyne Highlands.

Jim Bartlett, Nub’s Nob long-time gen-eral manager, said that last year Nub’s had a banner year, with lots of snow and an early start to the season.

“This year, with the late snow, it al-lowed us to demonstrate once again how we make and groom snow, world class. We are looking forward to another great

season regardless of what Mother Nature or El Nino brings us,” Bartlett said.

With a lot of improvements, ranging from major expansions, to those less obvious, snowboarders and skiers will see another season of great slope riding.

Nub’s Nob dedicated the off-season work to a major cross country skiing expansion for the upcoming season. Barlett said that the “skinny skiers” will be impressed with improvements made to the cross country trails.

“We did quite a bit of maintenance in the off season. skiers won’t be able to necessarily see it, but they will feel under their feet,” he said.

According to Nub’s website, www.nubsnob.com, cross county skiers who use the traditional “diagonal” technique, will notice wider and smoother corners on The Blue Trail loop. Also available is a new trail section that will help avoid traffic disruptions on downhill slopes. For Nordic freestyle or skate skiing rac-ers, the expert Upper Red Trail loop has more than doubled in length.

Also notable, a popular attraction that receives national attention, “The Super-

pipe” was recently ranked in the Top 5 pipes on the East Coast by Transworld Snowboarding Magazine. Nub’s was the only Midwestern resort ranked in any of the survey categories.

Boyne Highlands will compete for snowboarders this year with their ad-dition of a half-pipe as part of a new terrain park.

Adding to a growing list of adventure activities at both Boynes, a thrilling Zipline Adventure, which can last up to two hours and soars up to 200-500 feet, is expected to open during the holiday sea-son. (See related release from Boyne)

Also unique to Boyne Highlands, is horseback snow-covered trail rides, avail-able to resort guests and area visitors.

Returning for the third season is dog sled rides at Boyne Highlands. The High-lands is again partnering with Nature’s Kennel to offer half and full hour rides. Each ride typically accommodates two adults or one adult and two children. Interesting facts about the dogs, their racing history and kinship is shared by the sled driver as well as fun insights into the personalities of the dogs. Call

Saturday night lift ticket prices have been reduced at Boyne. This season all night sessions, Wed.-Sat. are $28 for adults, $24 for teens and seniors and $20 for juniors. This is five hours on the slopes from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Northern Michigan Properties

By Mark FlemmingNM WiNter Life

With winter coming to a close, warmer weather and plenty of sunshine, draws spring breakers and locals alike to the ski hills. Last winter (March 13, 2009) was one of those iconic spring days, and I was happy to follow the trend when I headed out to Nubs Nob for a telemark skiing lesson with Josh Baker of the Outfitter in Harbor Springs.

As a former skier turned snowboarder, I was nervous about sepa-rating my feet again, and that was apparent when I could hardly get the skis on. I felt a little bit better when Baker assured me that this was one of the hardest parts of the lesson.

After gliding around the bottom of the bunny hill for a few minutes, in a not so graceful manner, we made our way up the purple chair. While riding to the top and enjoying the surroundings Baker explained to me a little history behind telemarking. Baker said that a telemark ski differs from the more commonly used Nordic ski in that the toe is the only place where the binding connects to the ski leaving the heel free to pivot, just like cross country skis. The current style of telemark bindings are usually spring loaded for more control in turns, and to hold the foot to the ski, as opposed to the earlier three-pin style that connected the boot to the ski

The telemark ski has been around for centuries, used mostly in Norway as winter transportation, but the original skis were beastly both in length and agility.

“They figured out how to lash the toe down with leather onto wood,” Baker said. “The skis were 15-feet long. I mean they were gigantic skis, the tips were raised and that was it.”

The skis were not refined until Norwegian Sondre Norheim short-ened his skis and developed a binding that was flexible and allowed him to turn and stop easily. He first introduced his customized style to the public during an 1868 ski competition which led to a rise in the style’s popularity. The telemark technique was replaced by the “Stem Christie”, which stems the uphill ski to transfer the weight to

the inside edge, bringing the opposite ski into a parallel position during the turn. “The bindings stayed around for years,” Baker said. “My parents started skiing

on them, probably through the fifties, the bear trap is what they were called. But it wasn’t telemarking, you did the alpine turn on them.”

It wasn’t until the 1970’s, in Crested Butte, Colorado, that the telemark style started gaining momentum in the United States.

“My uncle Mike Trumble went out in the mid 80’s, probably 1983, to Crested Butte and saw these guys doing it, and it was like whoa, because we’re all cross country skiers,” Baker said. “He came back and immediately taught us how to do it: me, my dad, my uncle, a bunch of friends and then we started doing it here and that was it. We just did it on regular cross country skis or whatever we had, so it’s changed a lot.”

We reached the top of the hill and unloaded from the chair. Now it was time to see what I was made of. Baker instructed me to aim for something across the slope and put my downhill ski forward and bend my uphill knee as if I just came out of a turn. To initiate the turn, just slide the uphill ski forward, drop your butt down towards your downhill heel.

“You want to be athletic, you don’t want to just run down the street, you want your hands forward and fairly low,” Baker said. “You want to think about your knees, you want to flex, keep everything loose and just bounce along.”

I was doing it; I was bouncing along comfortably at a nice snail’s pace. I slid my uphill foot forward, bent my downhill knee, started to turn and… to the ground I went. Baker then explained that, the outside edge of my uphill ski should maintain pressure while the inside edge of my downhill ski should do the same. He also told me to make a “C” downhill with my body, because as soon as I lean uphill my ski will torque that way making for the ‘triangle of death.’

Off I went again, gliding along, I made a large wobbly turn and almost fell but saved myself. Yes I did it! I continued down the hill falling several more times, but also completing several more turns.

We ventured on to more dangerous ground, up the green lift, to more challenging runs. I started to get the hang of it as we continued, falling less each run.

“Remember your shoulders are important because they control your upper body, so you’ve got to have your hands up and your shoulders are going to follow your hands.” Baker reminded me. “When you get in the “tele” position you want to hold it the whole way through and at the end when you’re ready to turn, do a transition.”

I could almost picture myself gliding through the woods, dressed in heavy furs, with a grizzly beard, a shield and sword in hand; ready to conquer Europe with my fellow Vikings. But today the sun was shining brightly above and there were happy spring skiers all around us, this was hardly a place to conquer and pillage. The improper techniques (falls) were also catching up to me, so Baker and I said our farewells. By the end of our lesson, I knew this was a sport I could get into.

The Outfitter has teamed up with Nubs Nob through the Winter Sports School to offer lessons to interested beginners to advanced telemarkers looking to hone their skills.
