Inner-City Homeless Health Initiative

The Inner-City Homeless Population’s

Health Improvement Project serves to

better the health of our inner-city homeless

population through improving their access

to available health care services.

Bassinets

Bassinets are used by Maternal

Child staff to care for newborns

staying in the Northern Lights

Regional Health Centre.

Outreach vehicles

Two public health fleet vehicles and two

environmental health fleet vehicles support rural

outreach programs.

Central monitoring system

The Central Monitoring System plays a

significant role in critical patient care,

providing Intensive Care Unit (ICU) staff

with the ability to easily monitor patient

vital signs, including temperature,

oxygen, heart rate, blood pressure and

respiration .

Aboriginal Health Liaison

Pilot funding for an Aboriginal Health Liaison

position, which ensures health programs and

services are accessible and reflect the health

care needs of our region’s Aboriginal

Communities.

Recliner beds

Recliner beds provide new parents a

comfortable place to sit and rest while staying in

the Maternal Child Unit of the Health Centre.

Bath lifts

Bath lifts assist Continuing Care residents in

getting in and out of a bathtub safely.

Baby-Friendly Initiative

The Baby-Friendly Initiative was launched in

Wood Buffalo to connect families with

community infant feeding resources, to support

local health care providers to seek breastfeeding

education and to raise awareness about the

importance of breastfeeding.

MRI machine

The MRI is used in Diagnostic

Imaging to take pictures of

organs and structures inside

patients' body for medical

diagnosis.

Blanket warmer

A blanket warmer is used by Emergency

Department staff to ensure both patient comfort

and that they maintain a regulated body

temperature.

Women’s Wellness Initiative

The Women’s Wellness Initiative

aided in identifying gaps in women’s

wellness in our community. Many

programs were conceived out of this

initiative focusing on preconception

health, prenatal care, postnatal care

and mental health.

BiPap Machine

A BiPap Machine is a breathing apparatus used by

ICU staff to help patients get more air into his or her

lungs.

This machine is especially useful for patients who

have congestive heart failure or lung disorders.

Holter monitors

Holter monitors are used by ICU staff to

measure and tape records of a patient’s

heart activity (EKG) continuously for

several hours.

Retinal scanner

A retinal scanner is used by Emergency

Department staff to examine a patient’s

retina blood vessels.

Ears, nose and throat (ENT) chair

The ENT chair is used by Emergency

Department staff to treat patients for a

number of different injuries to eyes, ears,

noses and throats.

Vital signs monitor wall systems

Vital sign monitor wall systems provide

Operating Room staff the ability to easily monitor

a patient's vital signs during surgery.

Anesthetic machines

Anesthesiologists use these machines

to support the administration of

anesthesia, which allows patients to be

comfortable during surgery.

Arjohuntleigh Bath Tubs

Arjohunleigh Bath Tubs provide a safe and secure

bathing experience for Continuing Care residents

experiencing mobility issues.

Teen Sexual Health Clinic

The Teen Sexual Health Clinic

provides youth with a safe, comfortable

and confidential environment to seek

proactive, preventative care related to

their sexual health.

FRIENDS for Life

The FRIENDS for Life Program aims to

build children's self esteem and teach

coping mechanisms for life's stresses.

The program is available across Canada

and is the only childhood anxiety

prevention program acknowledged by the

World Health Organization.

Broda-Pedal Rocker

A Broda-Pedal Rocker is used by

Continuing Care residents who are mobile

and may be agitated and have a tendency to

rock.

The rocking motion helps calm individuals

and helps prevent wandering.

Adopt-a-Grandparent and Intergenerational BINGO

The Adopt-a-Grandparent program encourages

local youth to form friendships with Continuing

Care residents, through doing a variety of fun

activities together such as arts and crafts, going for

walks and reading.

Intergenerational BINGO encourages local youth to

set up and prepare BINGO that is adapted to fit the

Continuing Care residents’ varying abilities.

AHS mental health symposiums

The 2013 and 2014 AHS Mental Health

Symposiums provided resources and support

to health care professionals, parents and

guardians in Wood Buffalo.

The upcoming 2015 Brain Game

Symposium will discuss child brain

development, and its connection to mental

health and addiction.

Trauma carts

providers to store equipment needed when

a patient is facing a trauma situation.

Three Lifepak 15 monitor/defibrillators

Defibrillators are used by health care

providers to respond to urgent cardiac

emergencies.

Wound vac

Home Care staff use a wound vac in

dressing, removing infectious materials

and promoting the overall healing of

patients‘ wounds.

Heated massage chairs

Heated massage chairs are used by

patients receiving chemotherapy in the

Health Centre’s Community Cancer

Clinic for comfort and relaxation.

Flowers for beautification

Flowers and plants are used to enhance the

Health Centre's exterior helping to make the

environment one of hope and healing.

Fetal doppler

A fetal doppler is a highly sensitive ultrasound

machine that allows Maternal Child staff to hear

the heart beat of babies as early as 10 weeks

into pregnancy.

Wheelchairs

Wheelchairs are commonly used in occupational

therapy to assist those with mobility issues due

to illness, injury or disability.

Audiology Navigator Pro

The Audiology Navigator Pro aids our local

Audiologist n diagnosing a variety of hearing

conditions and disorders. 

This provides them the means to do hearing

tests on children in our community, rather than

having them travel to Edmonton.

Waiting room furniture

New waiting room furniture in Diagnostic

Imaging helps provide comfort for patients

and their loved ones.

staff to continuously monitor the heart activity

of patients.

Glidescope

The GlideScope Video Laryngoscope is used by

Emergency Department staff for a clear, real-

time view of patients' airways.

Slit lamp

The Slit Lamp provides Emergency Department

staff with a high-intensity light source which

assists in the treatment of eye injuries, and is

often used alongside the ENT chair.

Health Centre.
