Food for Thought ~ Fr. James Bearss, Pastor This weekend, Holy Mother Church celebrates the Epiphany of the Lord. This liturgical solemnity marks the end of the journey of the magi in their search to discover the King
whose star appeared in the heavens (Matthew 2:2). The three magi traditionally represent us, the gentiles, as well as the three sons of Noah who are the originators of the three races of man: African, Caucasian and Asian (Genesis 5:32). The magi were in search of a child who was the newborn king of the Jews. Simeon at the Temple said of this child that he was “. . . destined to be the downfall and the rise of many in Israel, a sign that will be opposed” (Luke 2:34). That Jesus would be the downfall and rise of many happened immediately, as innocent children were slaughtered by the jealous King Herod (Matthew 3:16). In wars, the innocent are often the victims caught between warring parties.
There has been a war activity burning against the innocent unborn children in the United States of America since 1973. The culture of life and the culture of death have engaged in a cosmic struggle against the other. The Supreme Court made a ruling in the infamous case Roe vs. Wade allowing abortions to be legal. The Supreme Court ruled that legal and violent actions could be taken against all and any unborn child at any period of its gestation within their mother’s womb. Since 1973, over 56 million children have suffered annihilation, along with their possible offspring. What would our country and our world look like if these children were allowed to live? It baffles the mind and heart.
All society rises and falls on the back of the family. As good stewards of the family, society has much to be accountable for how it has failed to protect the most innocent. Psalm 127
expresses the joy of a families’ sons, “Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the sons of one’s youth. Happy the man whose quiver is filled with them” (Psalm 127: 4-5). The abundance of children presents a blessing to a families’ wealth and posterity. While many have not given up on the traditional family values, they are being contested.
I would invite my brothers and sisters to join me and many others as we challenge the culture of death. This year marks the 5th Annual March for Life in Gaylord. While hundreds of thousands will be gathering in our Nations Capital in Washington D.C. to protest the anniversary of Roe vs. Wade, you can remain home and participate just the same. Review the following schedule:
Friday, January 23rd
7pm: Vigil Mass with Bishop Steven Raica 8pm - 8am: All Night Vigil in Parish Chapel
Saturday, January 24th
7:30am: Morning Prayer 8am: Daily Morning Mass 9am - 1pm: Teen Conference held in the Cooney Conference Center 1:00 - 2pm: Rally for Life in Parish Hall 2:00 - 3pm: St. Mary Cathedral to City Hall
(Bus transportation will be made available)
I quite understand that while this moral dilemma stains the American flag, it is not a pleasant issue address or even to acknowledge by our parish families. However, we owe the millions who have suffered tragic deaths a voice to be heard through our actions and presence. Like the children massacred in and around Bethlehem, I challenge us to raise a cry of sorrow and protest to the slaughter of the innocent (Matthew 2:18). Please come and join us between January 23rd and 24th. Pax Vobiscum

Our Military Brothers and Sisters During this time of political upheaval throughout the
world, I’m reminded of the sacrifices of our military
men and women. As a veteran myself, I know how
our military personal are groomed in being able to
put duty above personal interest. The norms of our
culture today center around seeking our individual
gain while the military teaches us that we live, and
sometimes die, for a purpose greater than ourselves.
It is a mission which builds character and embodies
an ethos which finds our purpose for life in a way of
life which mirrors Christ’s admonition that in order
to find oneself, we have to lose ourselves. At the
beginning of this new year, please keep our military
personnel in your prayers. Knowing that we care
makes the mission a whole lot easier.!!
New Communion Procedures
Begin Today A reminder that this weekend begins two new
initiatives pertaining to communion practices here at
St. Mary Cathedral. !
Communion to the Homebound!Persons may no longer request consecrated hosts in
the communion line during Mass. The Extraordinary
Ministers of the Eucharist have been advised to deny
such requests and refer the person to consult the
sacristan after Mass in the chapel area to document
and receive communion for the purpose of
distributing to the hospitalized or homebound. If you
have questions about this new procedure, please
contact Jeff Crane at the parish office for
clarification. !
Gluten Sensitive Communion! Those seeking to receive the precious body of Christ
in low gluten form should approach the presider
distributing communion in the main aisle in front of
the altar. Please identify yourself as requesting the
low gluten consecrated host. It would be helpful to
know ahead of time which persons desire to receive
this alternative. Please contact the parish office if
St. Mary Cathedral School is pleased to announce that
Fr. Peter will be joining our teaching team. He will
take on our high school Religion needs, until the end
of the school year. We say goodbye to former teacher
Seth Peters and thank him, most sincerely, for his time
here at St. Mary. Marie Hahnenberg most graciously
accepted the addition of teaching the 8th grade
Religion class.
A few words from Father Peter:
“I am the fifth of ten children to
Douglas and Janice Wigton. I attended
catholic grade school at Holy Rosary in
Cedar and catholic middle and high
school at St. Mary of the Assumption in
Lake Leelanau. After graduation from
high school in 2001, I headed to study Theology and
Humanities at The Franciscan University of
Steubenville. In 2005 I traveled to Italy to join the
religious life with the Friars Minor Mary Immaculate;
spent three fruitful years in the community studying
philosophy and spirituality. After prayer and
discernment I felt God calling me back to the Diocese
of Gaylord to serve as a priest. I hold three degrees:
Masters in Divinity, Bachelors in Theological Studies,
and a Masters in Sacred Scripture. I was ordained to
the priesthood on June 12, 2012, and began my
assignment as Parochial Vicar to the Northern Lights
Catholic Community in July of 2012. Since joining
the team here at St. Mary Cathedral I have greatly
enjoyed growing in all the ministries offered at this
lively parish. I have spent many hours in the classroom
with our students and had offered numerous Masses
for them as well.”
Please note that the Pastor, Leadership Team and the
School Advisory Council will begin an active search
for a religion teacher. I ask all of you for your prayers,
patience and understanding. In these times it is
necessary that we pull together and let God lead us.
Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you,"
declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to
harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

Cursillo Weekend 2015
The Cursillo Weekend 2015 sign-up is now taking place. Applications are available at the Parish Office. The men’s weekend will take place from February 26 through March 1, 2015. The women’s weekend will be March 19 through March 22, 2015. For more information, contact the Parish Office at 989-732-5448.
Giving Tuesday, started in 2012, is a global movement of giving to charity after the consumer shopping holidays of Black Friday and Cyber Monday. The latest reports say that nonprofit organizations processed over $26 million in online donations in 2014, which is a 35% increase from the year before (mashable.com). At year end, the advertising for consumer goods, such as gift suggestions and shopping days until Christmas, vies with pleas for charitable donations with videos of sad, lonely puppies. As we celebrate the octave of Christmas, many of us may be considering a New Year’s resolution that includes gifts to charity. As we think of ways to improve, let us remember that each of us is called to worship God with our entire life, which is our stewardship of time, talents, and treasures. Sharing those gifts is an important way to worship the Giver of all good things. St. Mary Cathedral works very hard to be good stewards of your gifts, taking great care in how we manage and track the resources entrusted to us. One easy resolution is to simplify your 2015 with online giving with WeShare to St. Mary Cathedral. It is easy, secure, safe, and provides you with flexible options. You can adjust your contribution amounts at any time, and all arrangements can be made from the comfort of your home. If you are uncomfortable with passing an empty collection basket, WeShare provides a printable form that can be put into the Sunday offertory that says, “We lovingly made our donation through WeShare.” If you need more information or are ready to sign up, please visit www.stmarycathedral.org or call the parish office. A blessed New Year to all!
Cursillo Witness By Darlene Roper
During my Cursillo weekend, I met Cindy who
gave a talk to our group. Her son had a drug addiction.
After several attempts at rehab, he finally was freed
from the big deceiver. “The Bible tells of the miracles
Jesus performed and is still performing. Jesus is
making the deaf hear, the mute speak and the blind
see, TODAY.” she said.
My Mother had passed away just months before I
attended Cursillo. After being her primary caregiver
for several years, I missed her, was exhausted and
parched.
The weekend was the beginning of my restoration.
“Near restful water He leads me, He refreshes my
soul.” The talks and testimonies were like sweet
rainfall on parched land. We were told, “Start by
doing the necessary, do what’s possible, and suddenly
you are doing the impossible.”
And so I began with the necessary, working on my
health, and I found I could help others with some
things. I started studying the word of God, and
amazingly, I could speak about my faith journey. I
receive the sacrament of healing and I see.
I knew as Cindy spoke, the Holy Spirit was at
work, restoring my authentic soul. Yes, Jesus still
performs miracles, TODAY.
Prayerfully consider attending a Cursillo weekend.
You can trust in God’s timing.

Our Lady of Fatima Message
Our Lady of Fatima is requesting that the devotion of the First Saturday of five consecutive months be
brought back into practice. The PCCW ladies are sponsoring this devotion. Together as a parish, all are
asked to answer this call.
We will begin on Saturday, January 3, 2015 and continue throughout the entire year. You can begin
which ever month works for you and continue for five consecutive months.
As a reward, Our Lady promises to assist them at the hour of death and grant them all the graces necessary for
salvation. The conditions for the devotion are: Confession; Holy Communion; say five decades of the Rosary; and
meditate 15 minutes on the mysteries of the Rosary. All this with the purpose of making reparation to the
Immaculate Heart of Mary for the sins of men. Hope to see you there. For more information, contact Rosalie at

Dear St. Mary Cathedral, St. Thomas Aquinas & Holy Redeemer Parishioners:
We are thrilled to inform you that the Michigan Ambassadors of Music recently announced that we – four
Gaylord St. Mary Cathedral High School students – have been selected to participate in a 16-day performance and
educational tour in Europe next summer. To proudly represent the State of Michigan and the City of Gaylord on
this journey will be an incredible honor.
The trip will take place July 9 – 24, 2015. We will
perform together with approximately 150 other
instrumental and choral students chosen from across
Michigan. We will perform numerous concerts as we
travel through the countries of England, France,
Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Austria, Italy, and Germany.
The educational benefits of this trip are many. We will
have the opportunity to visit and learn about such historic
locations as Buckingham Palace, the Eiffel Tower, the
Louvre Museum, Notre Dame, the Matterhorn, Venice,
and Rothenberg. We will experience new people and
cultures from around the world. And lastly, we will make
new friends from across Michigan as we work with other
dedicated high school students to become better
musicians.
For over four decades, the Michigan
Ambassadors of Music have made it
possible for students to represent Michigan “through the universal language of music”. It is their
vision that these performance tours around the world be exciting and educational, and something
that students will remember for a lifetime.
We feel incredibly fortunate to have this opportunity and look forward to all that we will bring back to our school
and community from the experience. To pay for this trip, in addition to money we have earned through various
jobs and financial support from our parents and local service organizations, we are also reaching out to our parish
community to anyone who might consider supporting us and this learning opportunity. Any assistance you might
be able to provide would be very much appreciated. If interested, please contact our band director, Rita
LaVictoire, at 989-731-6203. Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely, Corrine Johnston, Matthew Makarewicz, Meredith Mason, & Nathan Smith

Greetings! As many of you
know, my name is Ellyn Milan,
and prior to my graduation
from Gaylord St Mary
Cathedral School in 2012, I spent many years involved with
various choirs and as a cantor
here in our Cathedral. Upon
beginning my college education, I auditioned
and was invited to join the Notre Dame Folk
Choir. I have been unbelievably blessed to be
part of this truly incredible faith community,
which has enriched every aspect of my life. Our
home is the beautiful Basilica of the Sacred
Heart on the Notre Dame campus. Through the
choir and my continued experience as cantor, I have been able to be involved with outreach
opportunities such as music ministry in Level 1
State Penitentiaries and the Catholic Worker, as
well as tours that have taken our 65 member
group eastward to Harlem and Sandy Hook, and
across the country. By adding my voice to this
ensemble, I have done my best to share the gifts
God has given me that were nurtured and
encouraged here throughout my upbringing.
Of all of you I would like to ask a favor. The
Folk Choir has been invited by Australian
Catholic University to assist in building a Music
Ministry modeled after our program. We will be
working with both students and parish members,
to establish music settings through workshops
and personal exposure both in remote parishes
and on school campuses. As an upperclassman in
the choir with a leadership position, it is
important to me that each of the 65 voices be
lifted together in praise. However it is very
expensive and I don’t have the financial
resources to cover the cost. I do know, however,
that I have never received less than
overwhelming support and encouragement from
our St. Mary Cathedral community, and now I
am turning to you for your continued support
through prayer and financial contributions. If
you are able to do so, please make your check
payable to St. Mary Cathedral, earmark for Ellyn
Milan, and drop it in the collection basket or
send to the parish office.
Thank you, and Blessings Always!
Ellyn Milan
Fair Trade Coffee and
Chocolate Sales

Chocolate bars: dark or milk chocolate large bars $4, small bars $2
Also, a monetary collection is taken for the Diocese of Matagalpa to help fund medical services for this very mountainous and remote region.

A medical team and assisting personnel will be traveling there again this year. The team uses all the supplies they collect and can take with them. Delphine Rogers and the Selling Team
