Homeowners Sweet Homeowners
I have a place in my heart for the homeowners who open their homes for our two annual tours, the Northern Home & Cottage Tour (Saturday,
September 13, 2014) and the Ultimate Up North Kitchen Tour (Saturday, October 18, 2014). Clearing
out of their homes for a whole day so that strangers can have a look-see is a lot to ask. I wonder myself
sometimes why anyone would go to that trouble. I hear the answers, however, soon after I meet pro-
spective tour homeowners. It usually goes something like this: I’ve barely taken my coat o and they
are exclaiming things like, “We love our builder!” or “We just couldn’t have done it without our design-
er.” Put simply, our homeowners want to help the folks who helped them into such fabulous homes.
ere is no doubt that building or renovating a home in Northern Michigan is a pretty special
process. We have some of the most talented and service-oriented design and build professionals in
the country working in this region. We also have one of the most stunning landscapes in the world to
build in. Add to that potent combination, the fact that our tours bene t Child & Family Services of
Northwestern Michigan, an organization that does crucial work for our region’s children. Our gener-
ous homeowners see the tour as a way of paying forward their happy homes.
As you’ll read on page 11, the 2014 Northern Home & Cottage Tour is going to be an adventure in
design cloaked in gorgeous scenery—largely courtesy of our homeowners. Please join me in thanking
them. And then meet me on the tour.

Beyond a small sketch and the fact that his clients, the Steenblik family, wanted to integrate a touch of their native Netherlands into the design, builder Aaron Draper didn’t have a lot to go on when he began helping to design their home on Torch Lake. at was ne with Aaron,

With its wrought iron railing, well, fraai !
e inside parlays the old country estate theme with hand-scraped cherry oors, distressed Douglas r beams and built-ins made from barnwood taken o the Steenbliks’ own farm downstate. At the home’s center, the ceiling rises to a grand 20 feet with a matching glassed-in view of Torch Lake. A double-sided stone replace burns in both the great room and a mahogany-paneled library.
e nished walkout lower level is a oenophile’s dream—oh yes, other ne drinks are poured here too! If you can pull yourself away from the bar and wine cellar, take time to admire the incredible, tiered lakeside grounds, a byproduct of Aaron working with Active Excavating and 365 Outdoor. As house #1 on our 2014 Northern Home & Cottage tour, the home we call European Accent begins the tour with an elegant bang.— E.E.

- Sacred Space Pine Hollow, Leslie Lee, 2014

Northern Home & Cottage AUG|SEP 2014 NHC17
Once upon a time there was a Northern Michigan cabin resort called Pine Hollow on the shores of Lake Michigan. A young girl summered there and never forgot the magic property woven of streams, ponds and 600 feet of shoreline. Many years later, she purchased the land and commissioned the design and construction of a home she felt worthy of the site—a home that she hoped would last, like a European castle, for hundreds, maybe even a thousand years. e warp and weft of what Leslie Lee envisioned would be stacked, carved, sculpted and honed from native Michigan materials—granite, glacier-scraped limestone and massive, ancient white oak. “… the embodiment of the geography and climate of our region’s fundamental elements,” Lee writes in her book, Sacred Space. In 2003 architect Roger Hummel began designing Pine Hollow. Over the course of the next seven years he and Lee would work with hundreds of Northern Michigan’s skilled craftsmen on the home. While Lee used the building as her home for a time, it is now the headquarters of the Pine Hollow Institute—a nonprot dedicated to healing people and the planet.
e adventure of Pine Hollow begins at the moat that runs under the front entrance. Allow your sightline to follow the stream through the glassed-in entryway, to the pool and out to the Lake Michigan shore. No doubt, exploring the 17,000-square-foot labyrinth of rooms (16 bath-rooms, 12 bedrooms, wine cellar, chef-caliber kitchen), nooks, crannies and views, will be the high point of your 2014 Northern Home & Cottage Tour. Watch for whimsy at every turn—ladders that lead to lofts and down to bedrooms, kaleidoscope angles, nautical doors, a ladder from the pool that steps right into the locker room ….
e ArchitectWhen Roger Hummel took a seat at his drafting table to draw Pine
Hollow into existence, he had already had a long and distinguished career of breaking ground in Northern Michigan. Fresh out of University of Michigan architecture school in the 1950s, he landed jobs with Traverse City’s principal architectural rms. But it was his partnership with Glenn Arai that formed the core of his career. Working side by side in the former 4PH

Suttons Bay cobblestone train depot they’d converted into an oce, the architects rendered a number of Northern Michigan’s most signature residences. Long before they were buzz concepts, Arai and Hummel relied on native materials and site sensitivity to make harmonious, timeless statements.
Several years after Arai died in 1998, Roger began working with Leslie Lee on Pine Hollow. While Roger was used to working with
stone, timbers and ne detail, Pine Hollow challenged him to use them all on a grand scale. Recently retired, he speaks humbly of the epic job, worrying that the craftsmen who worked on it won’t get the credit they deserved: “What you tried to do is tie it all together but at the same time make little points of interest—but you always had to know where you were going with it,” he says simply of his part in the tale of Pine Hollow .— E.E.

Karen Ludwig has great friends. Count among them her interior designer, Kim Hooker, and her builder Marc Burkholder of Burkholder Construction. Karen was ready to pack her belongings in preparation of an extensive redo of a 1990s A-frame on Old Mission Peninsula that she’d recently purchased, when she became ill and was hospitalized for
six days. Enter three of her friends and her sister who did the packing for her and set her up a space in the upstairs so she’d be comfortable amid the construction.
Meanwhile, the A-frame was a hodgepodge of bland spaces that didn’t take advantage of the incredible view of Grand Traverse Bay

across the street—it was in need of a makeover indeed! Working with Kim and Marc, Karen developed a plan for a new Brazilian tigerwood oor, opening up the kitchen to the great room and its oor-to-ceiling A-shaped view, and rejiggering walls to give her a lovely master bed and bath that look out on the wooded blu behind the house. She brought Kim in specically to help place her furniture in the new space, choose wallpaper, select lighting and to rescue a wall in the great room that was represented by a waste of space and a tacky gas replace in the corner. Karen also scheduled a vacation in Florida, hoping the construction would be done.
e construction took longer than expected (no fault of Burkholder Construction, Karen is quick to add!) and the day Karen left for Florida her kitchen cupboards hadn’t arrived, her refrigerator was in her living
room sitting on the unnished oor … Fast forward to her vacation’s end when she landed in Detroit, picked up her car at the airport and made the drive back to Traverse City. She turned into her driveway wondering why there were so many cars parked in the vacant lot next door … and then there was Kim, running out of her house to greet her with a glass of wine. Turns out, Kim had called ve of Karen’s friends to join in a makeover reveal—candles, wine and all. It was HGTV done better. Marc and Kim had worked together to nish and arrange everything—right down to a new, stacked stone replace and furniture arrangement (which included moving a baby grand piano!).
As Karen was so thrilled to see that evening, her home is now an oasis of relaxed sophistication drenched in the serene ever-changing view of the bay. — E.E.

It’s the kind of project people who love rescuing old buildings dream of: a humble, once proud farmhouse set near the tip of Old Mission Peninsula, past vineyards, orchards and cerulean views of Grand Traverse Bay, that just needed some style. Well, okay, a lot of style. Like so many early last-century homes, this one had been added on to over
the years in a mumbo-jumbo of rooms and nish materials that lacked integrity. Its façade was just plain dumpy.
Enter owners Bill Premo and Pam Prairie who breathed handsome new life into it—a task that they say (often!) they never could have accomplished without Matt Wollam and his design and build rm. With
“When done beautifully, Architecture will have the same power over the mind and spirit as music or poetry or any works of art, creating meaningful
human experiences.”

his signature precision and fondness for the contemporary farmhouse style, Matt worked his way through a new plan for the farmhouse wall by wall, detail by detail. Exterior standouts include the addition of a cupola, a stately new front porch anked by twin sets of square columns mounted on eldstone bases and handsome gray cedar siding trimmed in white.
On the interior, Matt used faux barnwood beams in the ceiling and walnut-stained oak oors to evoke a farmhouse feel. He went on to open the cramped kitchen to allow for a prep and eating counter. Pam moved the blah 90s-era cabinetry to her workshop (the couple has lived just down the road) and went to work with antique black paint and new hardware—the result is a refurbish job that looks like high-end custom cabinetry. Milk-white subway tiles, Corian countertops and dove gray walls round out this handsome kitchen.
e living/dining room is a striking blend of a rustic shell outtted with Pam and Bill’s sophisticated contemporary furnishings. A screened-in porch that looks out over the pasture and old barn punctuates this generous room. With its outdoor replace, the porch is a lovely transitional area to the bucolic grounds. Upstairs, Matt found space for a contemporary-sized master bedroom and luxurious bath. A bonus room over the garage means plenty of elbow space for houseguests and family. New windows through-out the home bathe the rooms in light—and increased energy eciency.
Among the many details Pam and Bill won’t want tour-goers to leave without noticing are several beadboard-clad closets that Matt designed to t in otherwise wasted space. e homeowners marvel at how per-fectly period they look, while functioning as if they were modern—a description that, come to think of it, ts Matt’s style to a T. — E.E.

It doesn’t take much to wax sentimental about this renovation and posit that this Old Mission Peninsula barn had been waiting for the right owners to come along. Because, underneath its drywall and con-temporary siding, the original circa 1890s timber frame barn was solid
as a rock right up to its roof when Anni Crouter and her husband, Nate Boggs, bought it. On their own, the pair is a pretty amazing build-and-design-team. Nate loves to refurbish antique pieces, as in the rst-ever (wooden) electric ringer washer-turned-bathroom vanity you’ll see in

this house. Anni is a contemporary wildlife painter whose canvases and murals add drama to the home at every turn. (Also know that she came home from the prestigious Grand Rapids ArtPrize competition last fall with the second place prize of $75,000!) But add the guiding eye of interior designer Donald Hanz Isackson (of Wendy Carr Design) to pull
it all together, and Alex River of North Arrow Log Homes who skillfully cut out windows and spliced beams … and this reno is over the top.
e Boggs-Crouter home isn't large, but there is so much to look at it feels very spacious. Walk in and look up—at the original barn ceiling and loft, and the intricate wrought iron antique railing from India. On 4

When they rst set out to build their home atop a blu south of Suttons Bay, the homeowners brought a wish list to architect Sarah Bourgeois. ey were sure they wanted a Craftsman-style home and they were equally sure that they wanted as much natural light as possible. e couple soon found, however, that a traditional Craftsman with its signature emphasis on wood and detail was at odds with their craving for as much window area as possible. In response, Sarah guided their vision to a contemporary Arts & Crafts design with clean lines and generous banks of vertical windows.
e result of the architect-client dialogue is a shingled, low-to-the-land structure with deep overhanging eaves. With its taupe shake siding,
the home makes a serene statement against its forested backdrop. In the interior, natural light bounces o the Brazilian cherry hardwood oor creating a calm, Zen-like ambiance. “It is a house that is based on light,” the wife explains. “We never need lights on during the day—and we nd ourselves following the sun. We see the bay and the sunrise from our bedroom. Our kitchen and dining areas are on the south side and our living room faces the setting sun to the west.”
Interior designer Kim Hooker of Cedar Creek Interiors played up the tranquility with a gentle pale green and taupe palette, then went on to pull together furnishings that include reclaimed iron-and-wood rustic pieces and

dining chairs covered in twisted seagrass—a vibe she calls Asian farmhouse. By grouping two pairs of contemporary club swivel chairs in the living room, Kim made it possible to take in the view out the window, chat with others in the room and watch the television and replace, all without changing seats.
Builder Dale Boone, kitchen designer Angella Goodall and landscaper Brian Zimmerman rounded out this talented team. Which is not to overlook
what the husband brought to this project—his passion for woodworking played out in, among other elements, an inspired rough-hewn mantel made from a hickory tree that once stood in the yard of their former home. And, too, a Frank Lloyd Wright-esque cherry staircase railing that any disciple of early 20th-century design would recognize as the work of a true craftsman, in all senses of that word. — E.E.

Kathy Hanks was starting life over in Northern Michigan when she found her It property. Needless to say, this is a woman who knows her own mind. Included on her long resume: philosophy major and art minor, chairman of the board of Montgomery Elevator Co., (her family business) and co-owner of Floor Covering Brokers in Traverse City—a business she transformed from o-the-shelf ooring to a ooring-

So when her then-teenaged daughter followed a For Sale sign down a dirt road north of Leland, Kathy intuitively knew it was just right. Neither too big nor too small, the property has a generous sandy Lake Michigan beach and a view of the Manitou Islands. Kathy knew she

could t a house on it and not take out any statement trees. ere was a natural berm she wanted to save, as well, so she conjectured she’d have to make the house, as she says, “ooze north from the road to the beach.”
Once the ink was dry on the purchase agreement, Kathy went about designing her home. “I like elements from a lot of styles,” she says. “Craftsman, classic Michigan cottage … my approach is to let the house grow from the lot—planning the house rst and plunking it on the lot, that’s my pet peeve,” she says.
e nished product is what Kathy calls an overgrown cottage that functions like a home. One might call it whimsical. But that implies u and fancifulness. And Kathy’s house is grounded in the solid Northwoods
materials of rock and Douglas r. What is certain is that tour-goers are going to come out of Kathy’s home with ideas galore for their own home. ere are the old shutters turned bed headboard, the bandana curtains that tie up and down, the great room tree house for the grandkids, the shueboard-paddles turned curtain rods …
While you are touring Kathy’s home, be sure to notice the oor. Her newest incarnation is as a personal rug consultant. At the entry you’ll walk across a runner from Istanbul. e great room centers around a one-of-a-kind, hand-knotted creation. And so it goes with more fabulous rugs and “how did she think of that” ideas throughout this home. Kathy will be on hand tour day. Go ahead and ask her about all of them! — E.E.

By the time Tom Donall found and purchased his dream vacation property on Lake Michigan north of Leland, his career as an artist and designer had taken him from his Michigan home to South Beach, Florida. Inspired by the sophisticated modern architecture of South Beach with its minimalist interiors that frame ocean panoramas, Donall wanted to build his own Lake Michigan interpretation. “at community is lled with artists and has so much to oer in terms of design,” Tom says.
But there was another design caveat for his Leland property: Permit restrictions meant that Tom’s home would need to stick to the original footprint of the square, at-roofed house that had graced the site since the 1970s. For help with the project, Tom teamed up with architect David
Hanawalt, renowned for his modern designs in Northern Michigan, and Rodney Riley of Invision Construction.
e nished home builds up and out from the original structure in cantilevered boxes. Says David of the cantilevers: “ey provide an element of magic, a sense of oating.” e magic continues inside the home, where the staircase, too, appears to oat, and the windows that rise three stories wash the rooms in watery views.
e interior is also a lesson in black and white minimalism: dyed-black oak oors and kitchen cupboards and black ceramic oor tiles are contrasted with white quartz kitchen counters and walls painted with Benjamin Moore’s nuanced color, Paper White. Nearly every other element 4

is either glass or stainless steel. “Minimalism is used to make the elements as clear as possible and also to make them appear eortless,” David explains. “It is, in fact, not easy to accomplish minimal construction; all structure is hidden, there are no trims, and as a result, no room to hide imperfections or aws. Materials and nishes have to be designed and installed for uniformity and consistency,” he continues.
Rod is the rst to agree that it was a complicated building job from start to nish. “It wasn’t just a demolition or just a reno or just a build. It was all types of building in one—additionally, it involved adding 20 steel beams.” In the end, the home took three years to complete. A complicated project, certainly. And one that pushed the style envelope of building on the northeast Lake Michigan shore in a decidedly sophisticated direction.— E.E.

One of the many reasons clients work with Ferraro Builders is that customers nd the three primary service professionals they’ll need under one roof—architect, interior designer and builder. ey also get Mike Ferraro’s many decades of experience in universal design (sometimes known as aging in place) and high performance building (otherwise called green building). And beyond all of that, his clients nd that Mike has an incredible capacity to adopt, tweak and tailor a plan in any direction the homeowners would like to go.
And so it was when a prospective client named Judy Treadway came to him with photos of a home she’d pulled o the Internet. It was a spec-tacular contemporary Craftsman-style home, marked by a sophisticated
level of stone and woodwork. Mike couldn’t help but smile when he saw the photos. His own wife, Jeanne, had pulled the same pictures o the web and hoped to build the same home. “e home is exceptionally ornate on the exterior with lots and lots of wood details in the eaves, in the siding, on the porch pillars,” Mike says.
e couples got to calling the plan the J & J house for Judy and Jeanne. Judy and her husband, Gary, hoped to build their version on a lovely wooded lot on Long Lake on the outskirts of Traverse City. Before they got around to breaking ground, however, they sold the property to their son Corey and his wife, Sarah. As it turned out, Corey and Sarah loved the J & J house, as well. Only, of course, they asked Mike to help them tweak the plan.

e home that now graces the lot on Long Lake is a contemporary version of the original J & J home. e younger Treadways opted to lighten the use of timber and stone in the plan, and Mike helped them add touches specically suited to their young family, including person-alized closet cubbies in the foyer and turning the room originally ear-marked as the formal dining room into an oce for Corey. In lieu of a
formal dining space, the family eats in a nook of the kitchen/great room under a pecan wood cone-shaped ceiling—one of those distinctive home features that tour-goers will remember long after the tour is over. Other fabulous touches in this home are the three-dimensional wall tiles in the master bedroom and the authentic barnwood door to Corey’s oce that Mike found in the Upper Peninsula.— E.E.

With its soaring 15-foot cathedral ceiling, liberal use of glass, strong architectural elements and drop-away view of Grand Traverse Bay, the home of Gretchen and Jim Overbeek doesn’t look anything like your mother’s ranch home. But Scott Lankford, who designed the
original blueprint, says that when all the important living spaces are on one oor, well, that’s a ranch. In the case of this particular ranch, it is the strong, clean-lined interior and the interplay of structure with site that makes all the dierence.

e planning of the home began with the purchase of the lot at the tippy top of the upwardly winding Incochee Farm subdivision. “We just kept coming back to it,” Jim says of their property search. Stunning yes, dicult to build on, yes again, and the entire talented team who worked on the home credits Mike Collings of MAC Custom

low maintenance materials. e completed home is a stunningly handsome structure with a metal roof, cement siding, split-rock face and glass exterior. e exterior entrance delivers with stacked stone pillars, slate pavers and a steel pergola—an ensemble that manages to feel both indigenous and Asian inuenced.
e slate-tiled foyer leads past Jim’s glass-walled oce into a great room marked by strong design statements including a magnicent
stove hood fashioned from stacked stone anked by rust-colored Tau Gres ceramic tiles that resemble weathered metal. Angela Goodall of Kitchen Choreography, who masterminded the hood, went on to echo the same materials in the living room replace mantel—a surface that also discreetly houses the television. Other standouts in this striking home are semi-custom kitchen cabinetry, a spectacular walk-in closet and a bathtub that feels like it is in the treetops..— E.E.
