A Kaitaia apiculture student, Jim Barron, is the inaugural recipient of the Telford Cup for Enterprise awarded by the South Island’s Telford Rural Polytechnic. Telford, now a division of Lincoln University began in Balclutha as an agricultural training farm in 1964 on land donated by the descendants of William Telford.
The cup and $1,000 prize were donated by Farmers of New Zealand who saw it as a fitting acknowledgment of the enterprising prowess of a young William Telford who made his way to New Zealand from Cumberland as a ship’s carpenter, 150 years ago. William Telford’s story is one of success — adding to the land bought in 1861, by 1869 William had purchased further land near Otanomomo, built his homestead at a cost of 3,000 pounds and by 1888 had increased his 1,708 flock of sheep to 18,000.
The farm presented to Telford by an Act of Parliament for use as a training place for people wishing to work on farms, is now a centre not only for training, but research and development projects.
Mr Barron was one of seven students
Kaitaia student wins inaugural Telford Cup
on the Certificate in Apiculture course at Telford’s Kaitaia campus — the course is thought to be the only of its kind in Australasia. The 37 week full time course offers a comprehensive programme of both practical and theory. Beekeeping is vital to New Zealand’s Primary sector which is dependent on bees for its survival.
Telford’s student recruitment officer Marilyn Sayers who was at the presentation in Kaitaia on December 2, said “Enterprising means showing initiative and a willingness to undertake new, and often risky, projects.”
She said for 30 years Mr Barron had been a sole trader cabinet maker. In 2009 he sold his business and purchased a small lifestyle block.
“Since then he has begun transforming his piece of dirt into a high productive enterprise which will supplement his retirement income. He has introduced cattle, sheep, pigs, hens, bees, and macadamia nuts in the last year.
He has plans for becoming more self sufficient with a vegetable patch, berries and avocados which he intends selling to local markets and at the farm gate,” said Ms Sayers.
Mr Barron also has a goal of having one hundred beehives from which he will extract and bottle honey. At the moment he has eight live hives and has already set up a workshop to make additional hives.
Ms Sayers gave Mr Barron due credit for his willingness to take on the study, saying while Mr Barron’s early life education experiences had not been successful. Nearing retirement age, he overcame his fear of re-entering the education system and had passed the level three apiculture certificate.
The financial prize is intended to kick start the recipient enterprise. It can be used to buy livestock equipment, or cover set up costs, purchase marketing or expert advice, further study or invested “until the right opportunity presents itself.”

Taratahi Rodney Celebrates Success
These young men and women have completed a full year of practical training and theoretical study
earning themselves two nationally recognised certificates: the National Certificate in Fencing and the Certificate in General Farm Skills.
Guest of honour, at last week’s graduation (December 5) Doctor Lockwood Smith, Speaker of the House, presented the awards and mingled with those in attendance.
He was particularly pleased to hear how many young people have already gained employment as a direct result of the agricultural training programmes.
“This region is a key source of primary production and here is an organisation trying to match industry needs to the aspirations of young people,” said Dr Smith.
Taratahi Rodney, Educational Manager, Steve Hannam, was more than happy with the number and quality of students graduating. “Taratahi has
experienced overwhelming support for our training programmes from the Rodney community and we are looking forward to continuing these relationships over the years ahead.
Cups and prizes were awarded at the graduation ceremony for both effort and achievement. The ‘Top Student’ award went to Marley Manas.
“I am looking forward to exploring the opportunities available to me now and I have really enjoyed learning new skills this year,” said Marley.
Agricultural training is delivered from the Innes family property at Kumeu — student’s use the woolshed and an adjacent small house has become a classroom. Practical training takes place on a number of farms around Rodney.
From 2012, Taratahi will offer more agricultural training opportunities to the wider Northland region from a base in Whangerei in partnership with NorthTec.
Rt Hon Dr Lockwood Smith and Taratahi Rodney ‘s top student, Marley Manase
More than eighty families, farmers, members of the community and staff squeezed into the Taratahi Rodney Campus woolshed to celebrate the success of twenty-five graduating students

Our weather, combined with the pounding which many of our rural roads take from heavy transport takes a toll on the gravel roads which form the web of our transport infrastructure, and it shows.
Councils spend millions on the constant grading and maintenance necessary to keep these vital arteries open, but it’s sometimes a losing battle, with some roads losing their surfaces faster than they can be replaced.
It took a group of local innovators to find a solution, and they’ve done so with a commendable spirit of Kiwi ingenuity and hard work. After two years of intensive trials and testing, Gravel Lock, a pioneering company out of Waipu, have patented a road building and maintenance system which is truly world beating — and which has seen big names both locally and internationally beating a path to their door.
Local innovation ontrack to change the world
The concept behind this solution came from necessity — and the combined inspiration of Grant Lewis and Lance Aukett.
Working as a developer, Grant was often dismayed by the dusty and rugged state of the roads in Northland. He met Lance, a specialist in earthworks, and the two of them started talking about dust suppression — a must in the dry northern summer. Our changeable weather also brings its fair share of rain, though, and magnesium chloride (a traditional dust suppressant) can’t stand up to the winter storms which are the flip side of our summer heat.
Grant and Lance didn’t give up — they saw an opportunity to develop something entirely new. The pair went into two years

Merry Christmas to all our customers
of rigorous research and development, aiming to produce a pavement both stable and hygroscopic (able to handle moisture well). The culmination of their efforts has been nothing short of miraculous.
Their concept is elegantly simple — a special blend that’s non toxic and can be mixed in with existing metal and then watered down to form a resilient, tightly bound pavement. The resulting mix sets fast — curing in a matter of hours — to become a high quality, hard wearing surface which can withstand all that the elements and human industry can dish out.
The savings for anyone building, rebuilding or maintaining roads and access ways are staggering. Consider the applications for forestry, where heavy vehicles and machines give ‘old fashioned’ roads a hammering. Farmers adopt this miracle technology to create durable driveways, tanker races, hard pads, feed pads and access ways. Even the mining and military sectors are keen to see what the innovative Waipu entrepreneurs are able to offer — and needless to say our elected officials are keen to reduce costs in maintaining rural roads, a large part of any council’s budget.
That means two big advantages over traditional roadbuilding — time, and money. Conclusive tests — such as a long-term test at Spain’s Road in Awanui — show that Gravel Lock’s method drastically reduces washboarding, dust, and most importantly the necessity for all-too-regular rebuilding of the gravel surface.
Far North District Council Roads and Stormwater Infrastructure Manager Richard Green monitored the Spains Road trial — this is what he said about his findings —
“During one of the wettest winters for several years and after six months without grading or any addition of metal
both test strips are still holding their surface shape and show only minor surface defects. To date the Gravel Lock HSC has performed much better than any other commercially available dust suppression product I have seen and it has the added advantage of being a potential remedy for corrugations and pot holing.”
With testimonials like that to back up the reliability of their product, Gravel Lock’s Lance Aukett and Grant Lewis have been joined by a team of enthusiastic supporters and applicators. Roading engineer Allan Gordon and heavy machinery expert Don Jamieson have both come on board as applicators in Kerikeri and Kaipara respectively, and plans are afoot to bring the benefits of their innovation to the entire nation and beyond.
The future of road maintenance has arrived, courtesy of local ingenuity and a great idea followed through to its conclusion.
Watch this space, because Gravel Lock may have just started a roading revolution!

Based at Pouto Peninsula on the Kaipara Harbour, the Nathan’s are sharing their own little piece of paradise and the manuhiri are liking what they see.
Kath and Steve Nathan’s farm is an old dairy unit that runs into Lake Kahuparere. It has been in Steve’s family for four generations and these days, the 180 acres of rolling countryside is a fattening block for cattle.
Central to the lives of Kath and Steve Nathan and their children is horses and Steve’s father,
Gus, was quite renowned for his skill and farriership
in Pouto. Although Kath and Steve now work off the land, still
manage Kahuparere horse treks on the picturesque peninsula and have recently started an annual event, Pouto Horse Sports.
Steve, who has worked as a welder, fencer, truck driver and honorary fishing inspector, started the horse trekking
business and built the rodeo arena predominantly for their children. It would give them something to do on the remote, yet picturesque peninsula, and also give them a practical lesson in commerce.
“He liked the whole idea of creating things for his kids to do at home so they don’t have to go anywhere,” says Kath. “They can utilise their skills to run the horse treks, without having to travel.

Their children, Donny, Morgana and Patariki are all skilled riders, either on horseback or motorbikes. Morgana and Patariki ride the rodeo circuit in New Zealand and have done so for the last couple of years and oldest son Donny has left district and now serves in the Army.
At 15, Steve was selected to represent Northland in the Northland Colts Polocrosse team and still rides today. Kath says she’s happy to see her children excel in all types of riding disciplines — unlike herself who prefers leisure riding.
Pouto Horse Sports, held at Labour Weekend for the last two years, came about after Steve built a rodeo arena.
“Steve built an arena on the farm so Morgana and Patariki could practice for the rodeo circuit,” explains Kath. Then he thought, ‘Well since it’s here, we may as well do something with it.’
“More spectators attended this year and everyone was excited, so it went really, really well. We added two more winner-takes-all jackpots, adding to our two existing trophy jackpots, and we included a cross country, introduced ‘The Indian Game’, where contestants ride bare back and Buzkashi.
Buzkashi, a traditional Central Asian team sport, usually involves riders trying to grab a headless goat or calf from the ground but thanks to a local family, the Taurua’s, Pouto Horse Sports competitors were able to use a hessian sack ‘goat’ instead.
Steve grew up at Pouto and attended the local school before leaving to board
at Tipene College, Saint Stevens, which has since closed. He worked in Australia and Auckland until the family moved North and Kath describes him as “a jack of all trades”.
Kath is from Auckland but her mother is from the Kaipara and her family used to camp at Pouto when she was growing up. Kath is a talented poet and has travelled overseas to perform her work, is studying Global Environment through the Open Polytechnic and is an ornithologist for a wind farm project — as well as participating in the family businesses.
Morgana, 18, has just finished at Dargaville High School, where she was a house prefect and Maori prefect.
Morgana Next year she hopes to attend university to embark on either a
nursing or sports degree.
Patariki, 14, is still attending high school and competes in the steer riding section of rodeo. Donny is based
in Auckland but his partner, Sophie and their son, Malakai live in Whangarei.
Gus Nathan is buried on the family farm overlooking the arena. At this year’s horse sports, Morgana won the memorial trophy in his name.

grow and hardy. J5s are self-pollinating and the oil has a spicy peppery taste.
Olive variety adviser Mike Reilly approved this species and gave valuable advice on planting, staking and fertilising. Mike was then employed by Adrienne to help set up the olive grove.
Mike, who has been an expert in growing olives since 1994, heatedly contests the opinion of some that the north is a challenging place to grow olives, saying the north’s low frost danger makes it an ideal place.
The J5 variety was brought into the country by Croatian settlers in about 1900 and he believes Adrienne’s are the right quality to gain her gold medal recognition. The property also grows two Italian varieties, Leccino and Pendolino trees.
For the first harvest a presser had to be found quickly and in 2000 Rodney pressers were thin on the ground. Adrienne’s olives were pressed at a site owned by a family connection, north of Whangarei. At that time, the crop yielded a good 7.7 litres from 43kg.
Other pressers were found at Mangawhai and Wellsford where an Oliomio Italian centrifuge press was imported by the late Ian Mann. The Italian press was then bought by Greg Scopas, who continues to press for growers as well as running a small goods business of his own.
Rodney has around 10 commercial groves from Huapai to Matakana — Adrienne’s being one of the oldest established groves in this area.
Devastating storms in December 2005 during flowering time hit the crop hard, but the following year the first New Zealand Leccino and Pendolinos ripened and yielded three tonnes. This
was enough to provide 600, 250ml bottles to sell for a Rotary fundraising project (Adrienne is a member).
She says Taruna Estate now has its full quota of olives because the pruning, mowing and spraying of 350 trees is ‘quite enough’ for one woman to manage.
“I want to go on doing olives for as long as I can because it’s satisfying to have something on your table that you’ve created and that is sloshed around the kitchens of celebrity chefs.
“The market is getting better as people realise the health benefits of these oils,” she says.
In addition to the olives, a more recent planting of 50 Tahitian limes are taking a long time to grow, but appear to like Taruna’s acidic soil.
Adrienne hopes to also market these limes in due course.

Northland-based Uber Group — a young team that started from modest beginnings, has queried claims that it’s all just about to begin.
In 2004 young entrepreneur Hayden Simon started a business repairing PCs. ‘Uber PC’ quickly morphed into Uber Networks and then into Uber Group, with Mr Simon spotting an undeveloped opportunity to provide wireless broadband to areas of rural Northland where dialup was the only alternative.
It was not long before his company came to the attention of US-based Martin Levy, now director of IPv6 strategy at Hurricane Electric Internet Services and an internationally recognised IT expert. Levy was staying at Hugh and Pauline Rose’s Tangowahine Farmstay and was as frustrated as they were with their dialup connection. He tracked down the then little-known Uber and assured the Roses the solution would work.
The series of events that followed has become typical for Uber as they have rolled out their wireless network throughout Northland. The Roses invited all the locals to their home and delivered enough committed subscribers to Uber for it to be worthwhile installing a transmission site on a farm at the highest point in their valley. Locals stepped in to help, providing tractors and accommodation to get their site up and running.
Five years on, Uber have 112 transmission sites in Northland covering areas from Te Kao in the North to Wellsford and Pakiri in the south.
Small wonder then, that Hayden Simon took issue with a statement by Vodafone that the beginnings of its rollout under
Rural wireless broadband providers have already broken the digital divide

the Government’s Rural Broadband Initiative would provide “thousands of families with the first opportunity to get good quality broadband”.
Vodafone has since apologised for causing any offence, but Mr Simon said that he had felt the need to speak out on behalf of all regional wireless broadband providers who, like Uber, have been giving rural people the same or faster speeds than those available in the cities for several years now.
Mr Simon says his company’s service is faster and cheaper than what is proposed by Vodafone under the government initiative.“Right now

our customers have stable, symmetric 5Mbps internet access (upload and download speeds are the same) with optional phone services. The Vodafone offering has peak speeds of 5Mbps — and that’s only on download, while their upload speed is considerably slower.
“Our installation and setup fee is cheaper, as are our monthly package plans, and our maximum data cap is 100Gb compared to their 10Gb.”
As well as this, Mr Simon says the enterprise-grade technology Uber Group uses means that in almost all cases, the company is aware of a customer fault before the customer notices it, and often has it resolved without the customer ever being aware of it. “As a result, customers rarely need to call us, which saves them time and means we can put our time and resources into constantly improving our service,” he says.
While Mr Simon acknowledges the effort and investment being put into making sure that all New Zealanders have access to fast broadband, he says that he and other regional wireless providers like his company are frustrated
about the claims that rural broadband has never been available before.
“More importantly, taxpayers may be paying for broadband infrastructure to be duplicated in areas where there is existing coverage — often better than what is being proposed — that has the capacity to handle all the traffic likely to be generated.
“Small companies like ours — and there are a number of them throughout New Zealand — have taken the risks, raised the money and set up the infrastructure, often with the local community’s help. We have brought wireless broadband services to where they are most needed, and now we have what in our view is government-funded competition which is not in either ours or the taxpayers’ best interests,” he says.

Inoculate or not — cost bene ts?
Dr. Julian Waters proudly sponsored by...
This article focusses on the cost bene ts of minimising losses in the amount and nutritional value of silages during the ensiling process.
Previously it has been indicated pasture could cost about 20–30 c/kg DM to grow, and the cost of harvesting, rolling, covering, sealing and weighting the covers could add about another 5 c/kg DM. Loss of grass during transport and silage making should not signi cantly add to this cost, if done carefully.
A good inoculant plus enzyme product may cost about 0.3 c/kg fresh weight, which equates to about 1 c/kg DM for a crop ensiled at 30% DM.
DM losses during ensiling can typically be around 10–15%, as the sugars in the grass are used as a food source by the bacteria to produce the acids which pickle the crop to produce stable silage. Therefore, 200 tonnes of grass put into a pit may only end up as 170–180 tonnes of silage.
These losses equate to $5,000–$7,500 if silage costs 25 c/kg DM to make.
If an inoculant reduces losses by ve percentage units, then this saves $2,500 for an outlay of only $2,000. Actual savings could be considerably higher, depending on ensiling conditions. A good inoculant reduces DM losses by speeding up the fermentation process, so fewer nutrients are used to keep the
bacteria alive which produce the acids necessary to pickle the grass.
The better the inoculant product the faster the fermentation processes, and the less silage lost. The best inoculants contain a number of bacterial strains, each of which work best at different pH, thus speeding up ensiling. It is rather like a 4 x 100 metre swimming team, where each member of the team swims their part of the race using their preferred stroke, being freestyle, butter y, back or breast stroke.
The bacterial strains on pasture are hetero-fermentative, which means they produce a range of acids such as acetic (vinegar), butyric (smells like vomit) and lactic. Lactic is the strongest of these acids and produces the most palatable silage to livestock. A good inoculant contains homo-fermentative bacteria that only produce lactic acid, which enables the crop to be ensiled more ef ciently and rapidly.
Plant sugars provide the energy for lactic acid producing bacteria, so any shortage of sugars will slow down the rate of fermentation.
Therefore, good inoculant products also contain a number of enzymes that are largely focussed on breaking down indigestible bre to produce sugars for the lactic acid producing bacteria. This helps speed up fermentation, particularly with challenging ensiling conditions.

The power of nature with the reliability of science.
The recent (fortunately) false alarm over a possible kiwifruit PSA infection in a Kerikeri orchard is a serious wake-up call.
What measures do you have in place to stop some plant or animal disease or even a pest plant itself finding its way onto your property?
If I arrive at your property to give advice on some land management problem, what protocols do you expect me to follow to keep your farm disease or pest free?
Think about the vectors for the spread of pest plants, formerly called noxious plants.
You will have to rely on neighbours to control weeds that produce wind-borne seed or to prevent weeds dropping seeds on floodplains. But there are other weeds over which you can have some control.
It used to be common practise to put the first three bales from the old small-bale balers (the ones in the baler when it first came into the paddock) back through the baler before it left your property.
This meant that all the bales left on your land were from your own property, reducing the risk of new weed species being imported onto your land. Dust, straw and other debris on the baler could also harbour weed seeds so it helped to know where it had been previously.
The same goes for earthmoving, cultivation and other machinery. Manchurian wild rice and other aquatic weeds are spread on hydraulic diggers. Gorse and broom are spread in road aggregate so check before you buy to see they are not growing around the quarry. And you are quite within your rights to ask a contractor to clean their machine before it comes onto your property.
The thought of a major plant or animal disease being brought onto your land on contaminated machinery, in dirty
Protect your backyardfrom diseases and pests
clothing, muddy boots, fruit, cuttings or other plant material, hay in a horse float or similar is horrendous.
Major outbreaks of foot and mouth disease in various parts of the world have been traced back to contaminated meal, to wild animals and birds, and to poor hygiene.
PSA is our plant disease-equivalent to foot and mouth in orchards and we have kauri die-back in the bush.
Department of Conservation, council staff and other native bush managers are insisting you spray your boots before entering some Northland forests. What measures do you have in place to protect your farming, horticulture or forestry business?
And if you are a contractor, rural professional or some other person who regularly visits farms, what are you doing to avoid spreading diseases farm-to-farm?
The region’s and the country’s economy are land-based so we are all in this together. You as a landowner have every right to ask us to spray our boots or walk through a footbath before entering your farm. As visitors, it is the least we can do protect your business.
This is not bureaucracy gone mad, these are just common sense ways of avoiding the spread of PSA or whatever other disease or pest is lurking just over the horizon.

He’s inquisitive, enjoys a bit of a yarn, calls a spade a spade and thoroughly enjoys his vocation. Bruce Worsnop has spent decades combining his skill and knowledge with science to select sheep with worm tolerance so that ‘dagginess’ is fast becoming history.
Bruce, along with son Patrick and partner Wendy, operate a ram stud and commercial ock of 2,000 pure bred Lincoln ewes and also breed Belgian Blue cattle. Their Makaroro Road property in the lee of the Ruahine Ranges covers some 1,900 acres of rolling and at pasture.
“We’ve been selecting our Lincoln Ram stud sires and the females we put into the stud ock for their tolerance to worms for the last 33 years and have found this to be a very heritable trait,” said Bruce.
Bruce’s primary focus is wool production and, as a breeder, the last three decades have been successful because of the demand for lustrous
wool, mohair blends and the hand knotted rug market.
Lincoln sheep, the heaviest wool-producing breed, were the rst English long wool breed to become established in New Zealand but more recently they have been used as a rst crossing sire to lift wool production in a ock. One example is the Lincoln Perendale cross, which produces 23 percent more wool than a pure Perendale.
With his nger on the pulse when it comes to the wool industry, Bruce is hopeful the Campaign for Wool, launched by Prince Charles earlier this year, will promote the bene ts of wool and see an increase in demand. The campaign, which Bruce describes as ‘a breath of fresh air’ is a great opportunity for wool growers to consolidate, unite and support the project.
As for the future Bruce is still experimenting but is rather tight lipped about his work.

Fodda — Feeding the earth is a natural fertiliser with an NPK similar to a conventional fertiliser.
If you care about your soil and animals health and would like to increase the soil fertility in a natural way, this New Zealand product made by Kerikeri company Tuturu Products Ltd is a fertiliser you should consider.
We have designed a certi ed organic (Organic FarmNZ) Soil Enhancer and General Fertiliser out of valuable organic waste and marine products.
Fodda Soil Enhancer is the ideal start for the chemical free growth of new plants, vegetables and fruits. It detoxicates the soil from the remaining chemical residue of old arti cial fertilisers. Some of the many bene ts are:• Non toxic, non residue,
biodegradable.• Increases the growth rate of healthy
plants.• Discourages slugs and snails (they
hate caffeine).• Odourless, won’t attract animals to
dig up the garden.• Enhances the growth of benefi cial soil
microorganisms.• Creates a nitrogen depot in the soil.• Supports the slow release of natural
fertilsers already in the soil.• Provides plant roots with readily
available nutrients.• Increases the moisture withholding
capacity of the soil.• Reduces the leaching process of
ammonia, phosphate and nitrate from
the topsoil by bonding the elements to the soil particle.Once the soil is prepared it is time
to apply Fodda General Fertiliser to guarantee the excellent initial work supports the growth of the new plants. Fodda General Fertiliser has all the major elements in the right quantities with over 45 trace elements. A healthy plant will quickly take up large amounts of phosphorus, potassium, calcium and magnesium from the soil and these elements will need to be replaced.
Added to the above bene ts Fodda General Fertiliser will:• Increase the plant root growth by a
factor of 3.• Increase the sugar content in the
plants.• Supplies the micro roots of each plant
with the necessary macro and micro elements.
• Increases the fertility of the topsoil.Fodda Soil Enhancer is available
in 2kg bags. The General Fertililser is available in 4kg bags for the urban gardener and 25kg bags for the larger gardens.
Tuturu Products is also now able to supply natural ‘taylor made’ fertiliser for lifestyle blocks and orchards. Attention rural business women — entries are now open for the Enterprising Rural Women Award 2012.
Winning the Supreme Award in the RWNZ Enterprising Rural Women Award 2011 gave Marlborough cheese maker extraordinaire, Lisa Harper, a real confidence boost. Lisa says she strongly recommends rural businesswomen enter the upcoming awards.
“The awards provide a great opportunity for women to raise their business and media profiles and promote their products and services,” she said.
National president for RWNZ, Liz Evans, said “We know women face extra hurdles operating a business from a rural location, but we also know that they are incredibly resourceful — especially in using social media and technology to lessen the distance barrier.
“That’s one reason we’ve introduced a new award category this year, the FlyBuys Online Business Award, for women who are largely carrying out their business via the internet,” she said.
The awards include a North and South Island business award. A supreme winner is chosen from the three category winners of both islands. The supreme

winner will be announced during the RWNZ national conference, to be held in Hawera, Taranaki on May 21, 2012.
Winner of the 2011 North Island award, Maria-Fe Rohrlach, of merino baby products company Nestling Limited, says the business she runs with her sister, Bernadine Guilleux, has had a real boost as a result of their win this year. She too recommends women enter the 2012 Awards.
“Entering the RWNZ Enterprising Rural Women Award 2011 has given us more momentum in the marketplace, both in New Zealand and overseas. As a direct result we have had sales opportunities and doors open in Germany and the Netherlands.
“Overall it has been a period of personal and professional growth and we would highly recommend that all rural women in business apply. It is worth it,” said Mrs Rohrlach.
Entries for the Enterprising Rural Women Award close Friday, March 16, 2012.
Further information and entry forms are on the Rural Women New Zealand website www.ruralwomen.org.nz or by calling 04 473 5524.

Clearing this hillside at the back of Warkworth shows the steepness of the terrain and just how dense the gorse was. The final result is impressive when you consider that in a little more than a day we were able to make such a transformation. No matter how big or how small,
2 acres or 2000 acres, we can mulch any size gorse, all other noxious weeds and trees to below ground level while preserving native vegetation.
Using track grips fitted to our digger means our machinery can reach almost anywhere. The major difference is that the mulcher gives an instant result, the gorse is there one moment and gone the next. The mulch is able to rot down and put nutrients into the soil while stopping soil run off when it rains.

Honda motorcycles have been strong contenders year in and year out in the World Superbike and AMA Superbike competitions, devoting millions of dollars and countless hours to research and development to improve their stable of high-performance machines.
With a racing pedigree stretching back to the golden era of the sport, Honda have always been quick to bring racing advances to the motorcycling public, tuning and fettling their street bikes with the know-how earned in oil and sweat on the world’s top tracks.
This year has proved no exception, with bold new design cues and blistering power the order of the day across Honda’s flagship CBR range — an acronym renowned among riders for power and precision handling. From the legendary CBR 750 of yesteryear which put the best of British to shame, through to the high-tech Fireblade, the CBR badge is the

motorcycling equivalent of Lamborghini’s raging bull — a mark of prestige which promises limitless thrills.
World superbike legend Aaron Slight sums up this year’s CBR 1000RR best — ‘Not only does it look the trick, the Fireblade is so nimble, light and powerful it gets you begging for a racetrack.’
And he’s not alone in piling accolades on this muscular-looking, slick superbike. From its cast-aluminium core to its compact, centralised engine with larger bore and stroke, all the way down to a set of 4-piston calliper brakes, this is a machine which invites the rider to push the boundaries, while still providing thrills for every level of experience.
Seasoned motorcyclists will be rewarded with scalpel-sharp handling which enables a smooth line through the bends, and a torquey whack of power from the big 999cc mill on the straights.
For those who want a head-turner with slightly less muscle but oozing aggressive style, Honda also offer a re-upped CBR 600RR — cut from the same cloth as its MotoGP inspiration and with the most powerful 600cc engine in its class. Once again, a new design direction has gifted the CBR 600 with stunning looks to match its turn of speed.
The aggressively styled 2012 CBR 1000RR is a world away from your average farm bike — a MotoGP inspired speedster

Hello Stu. Just a note to tell you that I tted a quadbar to my bike only a month ago (purchased 24/8/11). Last Saturday I managed to reverse (trying to unjamb the gear lever) over a sheer bank into a small creek and landed on my back on the other side of the creek with bike not having ipped but landing on it’s side. There is no question that the quadbar has saved me from a serious injury, but more probably my life! Not only that, no damage to the bike. Just a small tear on the sponge rubber.
Yesterday I went to see an old mate who is home for a week from Burwood after six months wheelchair bound, and likely to be for the rest of his life, due to a pretty simple roll over, and I asked him if he had any sort of roll bar. The answer was of course no, but that if he had, he wouldn’t be in a wheelchair today!
Stu, I can’t thank you enough for bringing these into the country and even though I complained at the time about the price, when you consider the ease of tting, it becomes very reasonable.
If you would like to have a yarn about this experience of mine (have some photos), give me a ring.
FOOTNOTE: Two farmers died in October from crush injuries — neither had a crush protection bar.

John Deere been given the world tractor of the year award at the world’s biggest agri-machinery show in Germany. A big coup for the Yankees to win over all the euro manufacturers when all the judges were German and French!
Every year in Hanover, Germany, the big names in agricultural technology come together under one roof to compare and compete at the annual Agritechnica event.
And what a roof it is — Agritechnica is the world’s largest indoor farm equipment show, with acres of high tech machinery showcasing the best the farming world has to offer.
The competition is fierce for the big awards — judge’s decisions here can echo around the world, making or breaking entire product lines. A machine highly praised by the exacting Agritechnica adjudicators gains a cast-iron seal of approval, and perhaps the most coveted title of all at the event is that of ‘Tractor of the Year’.
This November the Agritechnica judges were a tough crowd — the editors of more than 20 farming publications across Europe. But when their expert assessments were tallied, one machine came out ahead of the rest. John Deere’s 7280R has been recognised as the world’s best for the coming year of 2012 — a great all-round machine with 310 horsepower under the hood thanks to its advanced stage III diesel engine.
The 7280R was also singled out due to its practical and comfortable cabin, with wide commanding views afforded by large areas of glass, and the intelligent setup of its controls, clustered together on the arm of the driver’s seat for ease of access.
The Agritechnica panel felt that John Deere’s machine was a good all-rounder — a tractor for all farming environments. ActiveCommand Steering (a John Deere innovation) means that despite its large size, the big green machine is easy to control, both in the field and on the road between jobs. It’s also eminently versatile, able to hook up to a wide range of machinery for everything from silage making to harrowing, feeding livestock and tilling.
Kiwi farmers have been quick to adopt the R series of John Deere tractors, often carrying on a tradition of buying green

and yellow which goes back decades. But with the backing of such a prestigious accolade, expect to see more of the big John Deere R series machines getting to work in Northland soon.

Kevin Black has been farming at Pouto for the last twenty years, running a herd of 240 dairy cows and 200 other cattle at a picturesque spot on the peninsula with views of the mighty Wairoa, as it flows down to the Kaipara Harbour. But in earlier years he was engaged in a very different trade — as a military marine engineer, and it was his job to keep the powerful turbines and boilers of an ocean-going warship at full steam.
Knowledge of thermal energy was a big part of this job — crucial to keeping the big engines running. And this provided a surprising crossover when it came to one of the big expenses every dairy farmer knows all too well — providing hot water for his milking sheds.
With tests and inspections becoming ever more stringent, and digital checks for bacteria, impurities and contamination now an integral part of providing top-quality milk, farmers need vast quantities of water at around 80 degrees Celsius — the right temperature to work with chemical detergents, and make sure that all the plant and infrastructure of milking are hygienically clean.
So, at a time when it was still considered an ‘alternative’ or emerging technology, Kevin Black adopted solar power to help heat his 350-litre cylinder.
“Turbines and boilers were my bread
and butter,” he says “And I knew it took a lot more energy to get water from cold up to forty degrees, than it does to go from forty to eighty.”
The heat of the Northland sun beating down on the roof of Kevin’s shed proved to be more than enough to give his water heater the boost it needed, and with the fitment of three sturdy solar panels by local experts Plumbing and Heating in Dargaville, Kevin’s experiment in solar hot water was underway.
“The power bill for my shed was in excess of $1,000 per month — anything that would cut that back was worthwhile. The reality is that the technology isn’t new. New Zealand hasn’t embraced solar power in the same way Europe has, perhaps because power (from hydro electric sources) used to be so cheap.”
It’s been over six years since the solar panels went up at Tin Hau farms, and the savings from their installation have been right in line with what the EECA (the Government’s Energy Efficiency Authority) have found across the country on a number of test farms. The reduction in power costs has been timely, with prices for electricity rising even as the solar panels began to pay for themselves.
Now that his investment has been
fully recouped, Kevin Black is certain that he made the right decision in talking to Plumbing and Heating all those years ago. “Like all decisions in farming, it’s a long term investment.
Now that the solar panels have paid for themselves, future power savings are money in the bank.

With the wealth of knowledge gained from the European agricultural scene, the company soon forged its way into the New Zealand industry, specialising in tipping trailers and feed-out equipment.
“We aimed at the “top-end” of the market,” said Gary. “We have found that by talking directly with the farmers and contractors it has ensured we have been able to meet speci c requirements.”
For 2012, Agmech is pleased to introduce its new revolutionary ‘Forage feed-out wagons’ to its extensive range of farm machinery. The heavy duty wagons have been designed for functionality, robustness and capacity, with some new unique features that will be sure to impress farmers locally.
The Loadmaster tip trailer is for general farm use, ranging from 3 to 12 tonnes. The standard features include a fast tipping body that goes to 60°, tandem axles or single axle models on request, removable hinged sides and tailgate, swivel tow eyes and non rust Corten steel deck.
The Contractors tip trailers, for ‘super’ heavy duty conditions ranging from 8 to 25 tonnes, is a new breed of trailer. The ‘Site-master’ range is designed to shift tonnes of material every 15 minutes 12 hours a day. Many features are
speci cally designed for the earth-works industry.
The huge range of bale feeding equipment starts with the Linkage feeders, a simple cost effective solution to either feeding out on very hilly country or there are only have a few bales to feed, with four models to choose from. Two bale trailing feeders have sold throughout Northland, and the range continues to be well received due to the robust design and ease of use. Multi feeders for feed rounds, squares and pit silage will give farmers who buy in feed peace of mind.
The tub body design offers a low drag friction factor yet adds phenomenal strength. Whether its chopped silage, high capacity square bales or rota cut round bales, the Multi feeder will perform.
Ef uent disposal is covered by both the Vacuum slurry tankers, 5000 litres to 20,000 litres, and the new Rotary Manure spreaders. Handling solids, semi solids and liquids these cheap and easy to use spreaders are becoming a sort after product. Once loaded, simply put the PTO in gear and the chain and ail does the rest.
Agmech is renowned for innovative
engineering design and manufacture of both trailers and feed out equipment. A particular advantage to the customer is the powerful blends of practical farming experience combined with exceptionally skilled engineering.

“They are such lovely time wasters,” Margaret Belcher says fondly as she hand feeds her “boys”.
There is no doubt the nine alpaca nibbling carrots contently from Margaret and husband Gordon’s hands are very cute — and much loved. “They all have their own personalities,” says Gordon.
I particularly like the pure black one, although the Gordie, the bossy white one also stands out, especially when he shows me his teeth in what could be a smile, and then there is Kezzie. He’s got blue eyes and Margaret’s favourite — he was born deaf through a genetically incorrect mating. I’m told he has a nice nature and beautiful fleece and his impairment makes little difference to him or his paddock mates.
by Annette Lambly-Robinson
There are nine alpaca, all weathers — the Belchers are not interested in breeding at this stage, and keep them as an interest and a small source of income. They feed them a few pellets all year round and zinc pellets during facial eczema season — although they say where they live is relatively FE free.
Margaret and Gordon retired from Auckland to the 10 acre, rolling, lifestyle block at Tangowahine, near Dargaville, about five years ago, having bought the bare block a year earlier.
Margaret had been a sample machinist and Gordon a division manager with the Auckland City Council. As a young child, Gordon had lived on a farm in the South Island, but Margaret was a city girl — so neither had any real farming experience when they headed north.
After transporting a ‘Sunshine’ home to the property they were able to move in and set about planting shelter, organising fencing and water, establishing a garden — all the usual chores that keeps lifestylers very busy.
They run a small flock of Wiltshire sheep (self-shedding which saves
labours and costs) and fatten around four beef animals. The sheep and cattle are good for cleaning out the paddocks behind the alpaca — which are picker eaters. The Belchers bought their first three alpaca in 2007.

Margaret Belcher with knitted garments from Alpaca fleece
Northern Farming Lifestyles December 2011 25began researching what we could do with them, and as our interest grew, we went to a few open days, and talked to breeders,” said Gordon.
Alpaca, a native of Peru are camelids with three stomachs. They are a smaller version of the llama which is a pack animal rather than a fleece animal. They are shorn once a year, in New Zealand usually in November, have their toe nails trimmed when needed and in some cases their teeth trimmed or fighting teeth removed. There are two breeds, Suri, which has a dreadlock, but silky fleece and Huacaya (pronounced wiakia). The stocking ratio is usually about six per acre.
Alpaca fleece has a hollow fibre making it light and warm — it has no lanolin or oil, making it ideal for allergenic people. They are shorn by rolling them onto a table.
“It usually needs about four people to hold the head and secure the legs,” says Gordon. The fleece is sorted at shearing with the best fleece coming from the saddle area. He laughs saying the animals can be bit of a handful on their first shear, known to spit when upset or annoyed Gordon assures me it is true — relating his first shearing experience as being “green from head to foot with horrible, smelly spit.”
For the first couple of years they stored their fleece while they decided their options.
“In 2009, we sent it to a mill in Otorohanga to be carded and spun,” said Margaret. They were delighted with the results and Margaret has knitted a number of garments from the natural coloured fibres.” It’s easy to knit even in the summer because the lack of lanolin means it doesn’t get hot,” she said.
She hopes to learn to spin herself and has already purchased a spinning wheel as well as a carding machine so the couple will soon be washing and carding their own wool.
“We don’t intend to dye the wool, but blend the colours for different effects,” she said.

Margaret has also experimented with felting with very good results — it’s something she wants to develop. Long term they are hoping to produce and sell felted waistcoats, hats, table covers and mats and knitted garments. While the income will be welcomed, the real satisfaction is being able to follow the process all the way through.
Other possibilities could lie in meat processing. Currently a meat works in Hawke’s Bay is the only processing plant able to process alpaca meat in the North Island, but alpaca groups are looking elsewhere for more options.
The meat is said to taste like a cross between venison and veal and is reported to have little fat. Meanwhile the Belchers are content with their lot.
“Its been a big learning curve all round — in more ways than one — but it’s been great fun,” says Gordon. They’re enjoying the physical side of working on the land, the neighbours and the community. “We wouldn’t go back to Auckland — it’s too impersonal,” they laugh “Tangowahine’s a good place, only 10 minutes to Dargaville and half an hour to Whangarei — it’s used to takes us longer getting to work.”

land surfaces by blading, contouring, ripping, moving and removing soil, spoil or earth. The definition is inappropriately broad, and would include environmentally benign land modification activities associated with normal farm operations and rural property maintenance, particularly on land affected by an Overlay provision.
This could lead into croppers such as kumara growers and other farmers, having to apply for a Resource Consents to crop their land. Contouring and ripping could be caused by moulders attached to rotary hoes and aeration implements that are used to rip and aerate the soil. Some argue that certain soils should not be cultivated as they believe this causes deterioration of the soil particles.
The Variation 1 chapter which relates to the erection and alterations of buildings and structures within an Outstanding Landscape Area or Outstanding Natural Feature, is badly worded and will cause major problems in the rural community by over-zealous council planners and Auckland consultants.
To fully understand the meaning of the rule, you must first understand the definition of Structure, which is the same as that included in the Resource Management Act being:
“Any building, equipment, device or other facility made by people and which is fixed to land; and includes any raft.” In using this definition then, a large number of items could be
included within this definition, including troughs, water tanks, duck shooting maimais, meal feeders — the list goes on.
Due to several technicalities which have been included unnecessarily in the rule, such structures as troughs, tanks etc now require resource consent if your property is located in an OLA or Outstanding Natural Feature.
The KDC’s Plan, we believe is being used by Auckland consultants as the thin edge of the wedge to implement their idealistic plans.

Farm debt causing great concernNational farm debt is $46 billion. A number of farmers are
facing the prospect of forced sales and cashflows are tight and not helped by Fonterra’s reduction of payout projections of 46 cents/kg milk solids, which equates to $46,000 less income for the average dairy farmer for the 2011/2012 season.
Some banks have been irresponsible in their lending practices over the last five year period. The old Rural Bank guidelines of debt servicing being no more than 25% of gross income, 25% to cover drawings and labour and 50% for operating expenses have been thrown out the window, by over zealous banking officials, who are paid substantial

commissions by the banks to lend the money out. One banking official told me that as a result of his lending, he was able to invest in a beach bach and buy a new boat. Now the banks are paying commissions in an endeavour to get their money out of these poor investments, back into their coffers. It is ironical that the major banks have all posted large profits for the last 12 month period.

their district plans. The Northland Regional Council are reviewing their Regional Policy Statement. The Kaipara District Council Proposed District Plan changes have attracted appeals from Fonterra Co-operative, Federated Farmers, Farmers of New Zealand, NZ Transport Agency, Transpower NZ Limited, Meridian Energy and others.
The Kaipara District Council Proposed District Plan, should be withdrawn and re-written. It is full of rules that make no sense, e.g. Excavation and fill, is now defined in the plan as Modification of

With the payout high and interest low, it’s a really good time to fix the things that are causing some grief around the Dairy. Before you upgrade to new Milfos cup removers or a Milfos Variable Drive Vacuum System it would be sensible to evaluate things that could impact on your proposed upgrade.Sparkies generally do a great job, however, we regularly come across wiring of all sorts that has been installed incorrectly. For instance we see the right cable used on say, a milk pump controller, but still bundled with everything else so it creates interference with the controller and bingo, a slightly crazy controller. Unless you know what to look for it can be a painful process to find as it looks like a faulty controller. This is important for all sorts of systems from pulsation controllers to cup removers and the more sophisticated the system the more careful you have to be. We recommend keeping data cables as far away from power as possible. We have all heard about stray voltage, yes it does exist and can cause all sorts of issues, we have found a major source is the cable and terminations between Variable drives and Motors. There is a lot of documentation supplied with variable drives with regard to the cable to be used and metal glands for terminations etc, these are minimums and a good Sparky will follow manufacturer’s recommendations or better. If in doubt get it checked.Don’t forget the effluent or water pump, same deal, and move the electric fence unit to the implement shed, they can be an interference nasty in the dairy. For sensible advice on Upgrades, find your local Milfos dealer or Area Sales Manager at www.milfos.com.
Notes from the shed with Mark McKewen
Summer is most definitely here; Temperatures are climbing and target Bulk Milk temperatures are getting harder to maintain. The main reason in a conventional system is that the temperatures of the water used to cool the milk .We have heard of water up to 30 degrees and 22-23 degrees is not uncommon.
A vat wrap will help, however the fundamentals are that the chiller isn’t up to it or the vat won’t allow enough chilling to cope .
It is often asked what types of chilling systems do what, so I have some fundamentals of common systems, their capabilities and typical comparative pricing (all systems are custom so pricing is only indicative).Direct Expansion Capabilities. Average $17,000 Single vat chilling. Chilling to 7 degrees in 5 hrs
typically. Low grade heat recovery 45
degrees.(if available) Uses peak tariff electricity. Water Chiller with Direct Expansion. Average $46,000
In line secondary chilling putting milk into silo at between 10 and 12 degrees Split chilling system that can chill the vat using the same unit and chill a water storage tank. Low grade heat recovery 45 degrees.
Low to medium amperage draw. Some off peak tariff use.
Direct Online Glycol Chilling System. Average $58,000
In line secondary chilling milk into the silo at 7 to 9 degrees Use glycol to chill milk silos (multiple vat chilling)Large amperage drawNo off peak power use. Medium grade hot water heat recovery 60 degrees
Thermal Energy Storage System iCONVERTER $65,000
In line secondary SNAP chilling to 5 degrees into the Silo Uses glycol to chill multiple silosLow Amperage Draw Off Peak Power Use High grade hot water recovery 80 degrees High quality finish for system longevity
The bottom line is you get what you pay for, the cheapest has the highest running cost, so is much more expensive over the long term, while the dearest has much lower running costs, will be compliant and will save more than it cost over time. The choice is yours.
With no small amount of satisfaction, the introduction to this column is written in the knowledge that this past spring has seen dairy farms sell at good levels, enquiry numbers
vastly improve on previous seasons and all financiers and banking institutions reiterated the long term view that agriculture In New Zealand has a steady long term outlook.
On matters of real estate. Our country team have experienced a strong past few months. Sales have been achieved on dairy farms, dry stock properties, dairy support, horticultural and lifestyle properties. After the past few trying years, our agents are being rewarded for their dedication and professionalism.
Interestingly, enquiry for dairy farms is predominantly originating from the core farmer. All farm buyers for the year to date have been existing or remerging farmers. We have ensured that our vendor’s properties have been bought to the attention of our Auckland investor and overseas databases, however at present the best buyers appear to be the ones that are all ready established within the industry.
Northland has been receiving good levels of enquiry from farmers further
Tony Grindle
afield. In the past few weeks, we have been showing properties to farmers from Taranaki, Marlborough, Bay of Plenty, Southland and Wellington.
As summer nears, it’s a good time to take stock of what Northland is all about and what we have to offer. It appears that our country cousins from further afield are appreciating what some times we take for granted.
The Northland area offers balmy summer weather, ideal for family days at the beach and long barbeques into the evening, miles of unspoilt and uninhabited beaches and more often than not good all round rainfall along with land prices that are not prohibitive. Why wouldn’t you have a piece of paradise?
However let me temper the positive thoughts with some sound advice, although the forecast looks steady, the volatile off shore economics and shifting commodity prices combine to ensure that there is no indication of a future lift in dairy farm prices.
There is no reason to sit and wait for a future spike in land values, doing so may mean you miss the best buyer for your property.
Enjoy your family this Christmas, eat plenty, drink and be merry, I’m going to.
