As part of the 20-year transformation from a commuter school to a top tier university, Northeastern University began a series of projects to provide new student housing on campus in an urban environment. GrandMarc (East Village) at Northeastern is the first purpose-built private student residence hall in Boston, located on St. Botolph Street behind the central branch of the YMCA on Huntington Avenue. The development is designed to house Northeastern University’s Freshman Honors College in the dormitory-style units and graduate students in the apartment-style units on the upper floors. The 220,200 square foot LEED Silver development includes a 17-story tower with a pre-cast concrete and metal panel facade. Four classrooms are located at the basement level to help meet the increasing demand for educational space on campus. Student lounges are located on each floor, with the largest spaces on the ground floor and on the 17 th floor, which offers dramatic views of Copley Square and downtown Boston beyond. The 17 th floor, added as an upgrade during construction, consists of a president’s suite, boardroom and conference center.
