Q. I recently had a 16kw whole house generator installed. It feeds through to the 200 amp service panel from a smart switch mounted outside by my city utility power meter. There are no power management modules installed so the smart switch is just used to switch power from the utility to generator and back. My question concerns lightning surge suppres-sion. I know that no surge suppressor can handle a direct lightning hit to the home or very nearby but is it possible to use a whole house surge suppressor to protect both my house circuitry as well as my generator circuitry? — Curby of Auburn

A. This is definitely a question for an experienced electrician or electrical engineer who can come take a look at your complete system — the sources of electricity and also specific usage requirements.

Homes today are in more andmore need of whole house surge

protection. It seems all things now have circuit boards in them, even LED lights that are vulnerable to

surges or spikes, spikes being of higher current. My understanding is that a smart switch does some form of load shedding where it diverts or shuts down certain circuits that can cause a surge in the system.

Eighty percent of the surge concerns are generated within the typical system such as AC units, compressors or

other large use items. Yes, a whole house surge suppressor is a good idea for any surges of electricity from outside your system.

Close lightning strikes are usually dissipated before reaching your home. Sometimes surges can come from equipment located in the surrounding neighborhood and even from the generator briefly as it starts.

Most experts will recommend a layer approach with layers of protec-tion all the way to surge protectors at sensitive areas such as computers and high tech audio/video systems.

Q. We are planning on having our kitchen remodeled this winter and have been going over ideas. The old kitchen will be removed down to the studs where required and there will be a total new layout or cabinetry including moving the sink and appliances. The electrical and plumbing will have to get reworked to facilitate the new cabinet layout. My question is this: Presently we have a heating and cooling register on an exterior wall under a window. The new cabinet layout has got base cabinets that now will run along that wall. located on exterior walls and often are under windows to encourage circulation in the room. This can be a problem because most kitchens have cabinets located along the exterior wall.

To move the register out in front of the cabinet is problematic because it is uncomfortable to stand or walk on especially in bare feet. This is also a common place for food and liquids to spill and get into the register and they are difficult to clean out.

Yes, it is common to locate the register vertically in the toe kick of the cabinet. The problem with that is getting the heated and cooled air out the register. If the air is just brought into the bottom of the cabinet and then expected to make its way out the register, this can be difficult.

If the cabinet is not sealed to the floor, that air will make its way under that whole wall of cabinets, reducing the amount of air that actually comes out of the register.

I recommend using a metal

90-degree elbow to bring the air directly to the toe kick register.

We have also fabricated a wood deflector, sealed on all edges and to the floor, to bring the conditioned air directly into the room where it is needed.

Q. In the spring we are planning on building a new house and have been looking at ideas and plans. In our current kitchen we have an appliance garage in the corner of the kitchen between the counter top and the wall cabinets. I have found this to be awkward for storing larger appliances. They have to kind of get piled on top of each other and generally I have to unload most of this cabinet to get to what I need. Are there other cabinets that are designed to store appliances at counter level? — Barb of Allen County

Light neutral colors with the grays are gaining more popularity as well as the mixing of materials and textures — modern with rustic accents such as reclaimed wood or mixed tile and stone accents.

Yes, one of the newest innovations has been in hardware, hinges, levers and pulls. One of these innovations is door brackets that elevate and rotate the door to expose the full opening of the cabinet. These cabinets are great appliance garages and can be installedat counter level. You pull on the door from the bottom and the whole door comes out and folds up giving the ability to slide larger appliances out such as blenders, mixers, toasters and similar appliances.
