Town Crier - From the Editor

Welcome back to the RGPS Stadium for this Ebac Northern League Division Two fixture against Jarrow Roofing. We are now reaching the crucial point in the season where every game is like a cup final. Today is a real six-pointer as Jarrow Roofing begin the day eight points ahead of us with 14 matches left.

With others like Crook Town and North Shields also on good runs, the race for promotion is very much hotting up. Every game is now important as we move into final straight and the games are coming thick and fast. The league has been very competitive this season with everyone capable of taking points from everyone else, which makes it very interesting. Therefore consistency will be the key and we have certainly shown that over the last few weeks. In fact only four points now separate Seaham Red Star in 9th place and North Shields in 4th. Of course we cannot worry about others, we just have to keep winning our matches and hope it proves to be enough in the end. Should we get promotion, we have shown on several occasions this season that we are capable of holding our own against sides from Division One. We took Consett to a replay in the FA Vase, which we only lost in stoppage time, while Guisborough also only beat us courtesy of a last minute goal in the FA Cup. Then, last Wednesday evening, we took Billingham Synthonia all the way to extra time in the League Cup. Of course we did not win any of those matches which is a slight concern, but there is little doubt we have benefitted from these matches and it will stand us good stead for the future. The weather again caused the postponement of Saturday’s trip to Chester-le-Street which is merely adding to our already congested fixture list. In his programme notes tonight, Mark Fanning talks about the possibility of an artificial surface here at the RGPS. After a winter like we have experienced this year it is certainly an idea worth looking into, especially as our pitch has come in for much criticism in recent months. Finally I would like to offer a warm Northallerton Town welcome to the players, supporters and officials of Jarrow Roofing for tonight’s game. I hope you enjoy your visit and we wish you all the best for the rest of the season, after tonight of course. Enjoy the match, Ricky Butler (Editor)

From The Dugout with Mark Fanning Good evening and welcome to all the supporters, players and officials of Jarrow Roofing Football Club and today’s match officials. Despite only 14 league games to go this will be our first encounter with Jarrow after the late postponement of this game earlier in the season. Currently riding high in third place, Jarrow firmly have their sights set on promotion back to the first division at the first attempt having been relegated last season on goal

difference. They have a very strong squad and are currently on a good run with four wins, one draw and only one defeat in the last six matches. Tonight is one of those games where we need to be at our very best if we ourselves have any lingering hopes of making the top three spots that will ensure promotion. Talking of postponements, last Saturday’s game at Chester Le Street fell victim to the wet weather and a waterlogged pitch ensured the fixture pile up continued. It now looks likely that we will have to play 3 games in a week at sometime within the next 7 weeks, if we are to finish this season on time. I fail to see why the league and FA will not extend the season by at least one week otherwise the end of season could descend into a real farce as teams struggle to put out 11 fit players. All the recent problems with cancelled games must surely bring into the question of artificial pitches. I know Durham City are the only side so far in the Northern League with a 3G playing surface, but I am sure many other teams must now be considering this as a viable option going forward, Consett definitely being one of them. In my opinion I still prefer the game to be played on grass, however should we choose to go down the route of artificial at some stage in the future then there would be many benefits not just for NTFC but the club and Town. The pitch would be able available for use for local five aside leagues, training for the first team and Academy along with all the junior sides. This would see many more local players use the facility which would also bring in additional benefit in other areas ie, the clubhouse. If we could do this with the pitches out the back of the main pitch this would be ideal, as we could retain a grass surface but still have all the benefits of the artificial pitch. For now we must hope for some drier weather to enable these final games to be finished and hopefully we are in for a very interesting end to the season. The first division title is between Darlington and Spennymoor and that could go either way. South Shields and Norton are becoming detached at the bottom with Billingham Town looking favourites to occupy the third and final place. In our division any of the top ten sides could, with a good run, still get promoted, particularly should Ryhope fail to get their ground up to standard and be refused promotion. Plenty to play for then and that starts tonight. Let’s hope for a good performance and three points at the end of it. Enjoy the game Mark

In Town Tonight

JARROW ROOFING FOOTBALL CLUB

Jarrow Roofing plays in the Ebac Northern League Division Two and was formed for the season 1987/88, beginning to play in the South Tyne Senior league. When this league broke up at the end of their first season, Roofing moved to the Tyneside Amateur League. During their time in the Amateur League they won the Bill Dixon Cup and The League Challenge Shields, they were also runners up in the Gateshead Charity Shields and the League. In the season 1991/92 they moved to the Wearside League after developing their new ground at Boldon C.A. Sports Club. At the end of that season they were promoted to Division One as runners up. In the season 1995/96 they were runners up in Division One and as Marske the champions did not have ground facilities in place, Roofing were promoted to the Northern League Division Two. They were promoted at the end of that season to Division One as joint runners up and also won the Craven Cup at their first attempt. Jarrow Roofing remained in Division One until 2007/08 when they were relegated after finishing 22nd. In Division 2 they finished 16th in 2008/09. In the 2009/10 season Roofing finished 3rd and were promoted back the Northern League Division One. In 2010/11 Jarrow Roofing maintained their place in Division One after finishing 19th but were relegated in 2011/12. Jarrow Roofing has taken part in the charity event ‘Tyne & Wear Summer Cup’ in 2009/10 & 2010/11 and won both years. .

Manager: Richard McLoughlin

The Main Sponsor for Jarrow Roofing Boldon Community Association FC to give the club its full title, is Mr Richard McLoughlin the Managing Director of Jarrow Roofing Co. Richie to his friends has over 35 years experience in the Roofing business. Richie has always been involved with Football, initially as a Sunday League player with the local clubs around South Tyneside. Richie had a vision of sponsoring a club that could play a bit and move on through Saturday Football.

Hence Jarrow Roofing BCA F.C in 1988

Richie sought the help of friend Brian Marshall who was Chairman of a Local Community Association in Boldon Colliery where there was a bit of land that perhaps could just hold a Football ground to set the ball rolling. Richie began to use weekends and borrowed machinery to build a ground after Brian had persuaded his Committee that it was a viable project. The ground slowly took shape and promotion to the Northern League Division Two was won via the Wearside league.

Town 4, Jarrow Roofing 3

Town gave a debut to Neil Tarrant after his transfer from Dunston and had the better of the early exchanges. Steve Allison had a good opportunity but delayed his shot and the chance was wasted. On 25 minutes, Jarrow took the lead as Nelson fired home from 25 yards. Stuart Hardy was causing the defence plenty of problems but the visitors restricted Town to mainly half chances and at half time it remained 0-1. Town attacked straight from start of the second period with Neil Tarrant crossing for Martin Butterworth whose header was well saved by the Jarrow keeper. Then a clear push on Tarrant inside the penalty area was waved away by the referee. That looked to be crucial when, on 55 minutes, Elliott headed the visitors into a 2 goal lead. But within 3 minutes Town reduced the arrears as Andy Ramsbottom crossed for Stuart Hardy, who ghosted in between defenders to head into the corner making it 1-2. Hardy then turned provider as he crossed for Tarrant to score to make it 2-2 on 60 minutes. Aaron Ramsbottom was introduced for Steve Allison and he was soon in the thick of the action as he beat the keeper to a loose ball and fired home from 15 yards only to see the goal disallowed for an infringement against the goalkeeper. Manager Mark Fanning introduced Stephen Butterworth on 76 minutes; within a minute his looping shot from 25 yards flew over the keeper to give Town a 3-2 lead. Jarrow equalised on 88 minutes when a header from Andy Ramsbottom went past his own keeper to make it 3-3. The referee signalled 5 minutes of injury time and in the 92nd minute Peter Bulmer's corner found Craig Winter whose powerful header gave the keeper no chance making it 4-3. Jarrow pushed forward and in the 94th minute a goalmouth scramble ended with a shot striking the post but Town hung on to record a superb victory. Both teams deserved credit for producing a pulsating cup tie, Towns reward for victory was a home tie against Stokesley in the next round. Team - Kell, Shoulder, Andy Ramsbottom, Winter, Hickman, Newall, Hardy, M Butterworth, Allison, Tarrant, Bulmer. Subs - Breckon, Gilroy, S Butterworth, Aaron Ramsbottom, Chapman.

TOWN saw their promotion hopes suffer a setback as Ryton left the RGPS with a point last Saturday. A goal from Carl Chillingsworth early in the second half, his 20th of the season, looked to have given an uninspired Town a much-needed three points, but Paul King stunned the hosts with an equaliser soon after. Manager Mark Fanning shuffled his pack following the extra time victory over Ryhope three days earlier but the decision to rest several players backfired as Town failed to find their usual rhythm. After the excitement of the midweek cup tie, this could not have been a bigger contrast. Passes all too often went astray as Town But Fanning's side finally made the crucial breakthrough soon after the restart thanks to another fine finish from Chillingsworth. However, Town were unable to build on the lead and King forced an equaliser soon after. Town huffed and puffed after that but they were unable to find what would have been a vital winner and it finished with honours even. "We never really got going today," said Fanning. "The tempo and will to win were missing. Our passing was terrible and our decision making even worse. We made changes after Wednesday's tough game but this now looks like a bad decision." TOWN - Briggs, Dunn, Smurthwaite, Winters, Shoulder, Bowman, Laing, Parkin, Burton Chillingsworth, Emson. Subs - Dunwell, Anderson.

Ebac Northern League News, Results, Tables

Another all-Northern League final in the FA Vase is possible again after the two remaining ENL teams were drawn apart in the semi finals. Spennymoor have been drawn away to the winners of the quarter final replay between Guernsey and Walsall Wood. It crossed the mind of Moors boss Jason Ainsley to attend the replay, but the travel distance and the shortage of flights might count against that. Moors could have a problem with a difference though - how and when to arrange flights to thw Channel Islands. The possible match with Guernsey has brought back memories of the old Rothmans Cup, which brought together clubs from Rothmans sponsored leagues in the 1970’s. Several Northern League clubs enjoyed – in more ways than one – trips to the Channel Islands. Guernsey have a high fixture pile up which is not helped by being unable to stage midweek home league games. Because there are no night flights out of Guernsey, then there league, the Combined Counties League, won’t arrange a midweek home game unless opponents agree. Spennymoor manager Jason Ainsley said: “I’m pleased to be away first. Whichever team we’re facing , it is going to be a difficult game as ther will be no mugs at this stage.” Shildon, meanwhile, have been paired with Tunbridge Wells who beat Dunston two rounds ago.

ON THIS DAY – 13 March 1971

By Mark Jones This evening we turn the clock back forty two years to March 1971 and a pivotal afternoon at the top and the bottom of the First Division.

Match of the Day In the early 1970’s, Leeds United could reasonably claim to be one of the powerhouses of British football. Don Revie's side was at the peak of its powers. FA Cup runners up in 1965 and League Cup winners in 1968, Leeds had won the League Championship for the first time in 1969, after finishing as runners up in 1965 and 1966. Indeed in 1965 they came close to emulating Tottenham Hotspur's league and cup double of 1961, missing out on the league to Manchester United on goal average and losing the cup final to Liverpool. 1970 was another year of near misses as Leeds were within sight of beating Manchester United to the treble by twenty nine years but ended up with nothing, losing out in the league to Everton, losing a cup final replay to Chelsea and going out of the European Cup at the semi final stage to Celtic. By the start of the 1970-71 season, then, there was a real expectation of silverware in the West Riding. By the morning of Saturday 13 March 1971, the pre-season optimism seemed well placed. Leeds had led the league table from day one, establishing their credentials by winning their opening five games. After losing at Stoke City in mid September, Leeds did not lose again in the League until the New Year, going sixteen games without defeat between that Stoke defeat and Boxing Day. Although January and February brought home defeats to both Spurs and Liverpool, all eight of Leeds' other games between Boxing Day and 13 March were won, including four wins on the trot in the run up to 13 March. Despite their good league form, the one team that Leeds had not shaken off was Arsenal and in the early part of 1971 a fascinating two horse Championship race had developed. On Boxing Day, Leeds had led the league by three points, but Arsenal had a game in hand. When Leeds had lost to Spurs and Arsenal had beaten West Ham on 9 January the advantage had seemed to swing to the Gunners as the gap was down to a point with their game in hand still intact. A week later, the pendulum swung back towards Leeds as they won a thrilling game at West Ham 3-2 while Arsenal lost at Huddersfield Town, and when, in the next round of games on 30 January Leeds won at Manchester City while Arsenal lost at Liverpool the lead was up to five points. Another week on, though, and the momentum switched again. Leeds lost 0-1 at home to Liverpool while Arsenal beat Manchester City 1-0 at Highbury. Both won on 20 February and then Leeds won 4-2 at Ipswich Town on Tuesday 23 February, taking them five points clear again. When, on the last weekend of February, Leeds won 1-0 at Coventry City on the Friday night and Arsenal lost 0-2 at Derby County on the Saturday the gap was up to seven points and Leeds were clear favourites.

Page 19: Northallerton V Jarrow Roofing

Both won their next matches which meant that on the morning of 13 March the gap remained at seven points. In those days of two points for a win, Arsenal had two games in hand, though, and they also still had a trip to Elland Road to come, leaving little margin for error for the league leaders. Leeds was still going well, too, in the Fairs Cup. On Wednesday 10 March 1971 they welcomed Vitoria Setubal of Portugal to Elland Road in the first leg of the quarter-final. The visitors were ahead within two minutes, Baptista heading home, but United recovered to turn around a tight game. Lorimer drove home the equaliser from twenty yards from a free kick on nineteen minutes and Giles got the winner from a hotly disputed penalty fifteen minutes from time. And so, forty two years ago today, Leeds made the relatively short journey across the Pennines to the Lancashire coast to take on Blackpool at Bloomfield Road. If the game was important to their Championship hopes, it was equally important for Blackpool, who was bottom of the table and struggling desperately against the threat of relegation. They had been promoted from Division Two on a glorious night at the end of the 1969-70 season when they had won a local derby 3-0 at Preston North End, not only sealing their own promotion but contributing to the relegation of their local rivals to the Third Division for the first time. 1970-71 has seen the Tangerines struggle to adapt to top flight football, though, and their season had been almost the opposite of that enjoyed by Leeds. Coming into the game on 13 March 1971, they had won only three of their 31 fixtures. October and November had been particularly disastrous, with seven consecutive defeats, including a 1-3 defeat at Leeds on 14 November. That losing run had been ended by a 1-0 home win over Coventry City on 12 December, but Blackpool were without a win in the ten games since then and had lost five and drawn one of the six games leading up to Leeds, scoring only one goal in the process. The run left them two points adrift of another Lancashire club, Burnley, and seven adrift of safety on the morning of 13 March. Leeds, then, came into the game as strong favourites. 1971 had not been as straightforward for them as their league position might suggest, however. In late 1970, they had become embroiled in the "Jack Charlton Affair". Charlton had given an interview to Tyne Tees Television in which he was reported to have admitted to keeping a little book with the names of players he intended to repay for past fouls. The admission caused much moral handwringing in the press, with opinion divided between those who condemned Charlton for his admission and those who congratulated him for his honesty. In those more naïve times, an FA charge of bringing the game into disrepute followed. Perhaps more worryingly for Leeds, a month before the Blackpool game they had crashed out of the FA Cup, losing a Fifth Round tie at Fourth Division Colchester United 2-3 in one of the great Cup shocks. After coming so close in three competitions in 1970 and ending up with nothing, the fear was that United might tire again, and that the pace might being to tell, and after their midweek Fairs Cup exertions those fears looked justified at Bloomfield Road.

Page 20: Northallerton V Jarrow Roofing

Leeds struggled to come to terms with a bumpy, muddy pitch and a determined Blackpool performance and found themselves behind at the interval, Craven delighting the majority of the 27,401 crowd with the goal. United, however, rallied straight after the break and were back on level terms in controversial circumstances after 46 minutes. A short ball into the area by Jones was turned home by Lorimer who ran in behind the Blackpool defence from what appeared to be an offside position. Referee Jim Finney judged that the Scot had been played onside by a Blackpool defender and allowed the goal to stand. If the Seasiders were unhappy with that decision, they were relieved in injury time when Clarke put the ball into the net for what looked to be a last gasp winner, only for Mr Finney to rule that this time the Leeds player was offside. 1-1 and a result which did little to help either side from a game that was less than thrilling for the Match of the Day cameras. On the coach home, Don Revie tried to lift his team's spirits by giving them each a glass of champagne to celebrate his ten years in charge at Leeds, only to receive more disappointing news when it was revealed that what had been thought to be a calf muscle injury was, in fact, a hairline fracture of his left leg.

Elsewhere While Leeds was drawing at Blackpool, Arsenal was in action in a London derby at Crystal Palace and they increased the pressure on the leaders with a 2-0 win. George Graham gave them the lead in the first half, climbing above a defender to head home a long ball forward from the corner of the six yard box, and the second came after the break when confusion in the home box allowed substitute Jon Sammels to score with the help of a deflection. The crowd at Selhurst Park was 35,022. The results left Leeds on 52 points from 33 games and Arsenal on 46 from 31. At the bottom of the table, any satisfaction that Blackpool might have had from taking a point from Leeds was dispelled by news that Burnley had won 1-0 at Huddersfield Town, Waldron scoring in front of 18,793. The win lifted Burnley onto 19 points from 32 games, three ahead of Blackpool and three behind third bottom West Ham, who lost 0-2 at Wolves, with Bobby Gould scoring both goals. Newcastle United was in lower mid-table after losing 0-1 at Ipswich Town, Robertson scoring the only goal in front of 17,060. A first half goal from the much travelled John O'Rourke gave Coventry City a 1-0 home win over Liverpool in front of 27,687, while Law and Best were the scorers at Old Trafford, where Manchester United beat struggling Nottingham Forest 2-0 in front of 40,473. Second half goals from Whittle and Royle gave Everton a 2-0 home win over Stoke City in front of 38,924, while Southampton beat West Bromwich Albion 1-0, Paine getting the goal. There was another London derby at White Hart Lane, where seventh placed Spurs beat third placed Chelsea 2-1 in front of 49,192. Weller put Chelsea ahead on 46 minutes but Spurs responded with two goals in three minutes from Peters on 69 and Chivers on 72. Meanwhile, Derby County and Manchester City drew 0-0.

Page 21: Northallerton V Jarrow Roofing

In Division Two, Middlesbrough lost ground in a tight promotion race, losing 0-1 at Charlton Athletic in front of 9,420. The defeat left Boro seventh, on 38 points from 32 games, four points behind leaders Leicester City having played a game more. Leicester won 1-0 at Swindon Town, taking them a point clear of second placed Cardiff City, who drew 1-1 at Blackburn Rovers. Hull City, Sheffield United and Carlisle United were all on 40 points from 32 games. Hull lost 0-1 at home to Oxford United, the Blades drew 2-2 at QPR and Carlisle won 1-0 at home to Luton Town, leaving the Hatters sixth on 38 points from 30 games. Sunderland was eleventh on 31 points from 32 games after a 0-0 draw with Portsmouth at Roker Park in front of 10,827. Charlton remained bottom of the table on 20 points despite their victory over Boro. In Division Three, Preston North End were two points clear of Fulham at the top with a game in hand after winning 2-1 at Rochdale, while Fulham beat Rotherham United 1-0 at Craven Cottage. Halifax Town were third and Aston Villa fourth after drawing 1-1 with each other at Villa Park. In the Fourth Division, York City was sixth after winning 1-0 at Aldershot. It was York's fifth consecutive win as their promotion challenge gathered pace. Darlington and Hartlepool United both had home wins, Quakers beating Peterborough United 1-0 and Pools beating Bournemouth 2-1.

In the News The headlines in the morning papers forty two years ago today were made by the announcement by Lord Carrington that soldiers under 18 years of age would no longer be sent to Northern Ireland, which came in the wake of the murder of three Scots Fusiliers, including two teenage brothers, near Belfast two days earlier. Paul McCartney was reported to have won the first round of his attempt in the High Court to break up the Beatles when he succeeded in having a City accountant appointed as receiver and manager of the group's multi million pound business pending trial of the main action (which no doubt proved to be a long and winding road). A British Government official stated during trade talks in Hungary that it was hoped that Britain would be a member of the Common Market by the summer of 1971 (it turned out to take a little longer). If you fancied a new job you might have been tempted by the advertisement for a qualified accountant at the princely salary of £4,000 per annum, the downside being that the job was at a cigarette company in Zambia. Closer to home, Chambermaid jobs were on offer at a weekly wage of £7.50, waiters and waitresses could expect up to £20 a week or you could buy your own business selling paperback books in a hotel for £550.

Page 22: Northallerton V Jarrow Roofing

On the other hand, if you needed a break from your job, 8 day coach tours of Ireland could be had for £46 and a trip to the Holy Land by air would set you back £139. Meanwhile, in rugby's Five Nations Championship, Wales completed a Triple Crown by beating Ireland 23-9 at the Cardiff Arms Park, setting up a shot at the Grand Slam in Paris two weeks later.

For Your Entertainment Saturday morning television on BBC1 on 13 March 1971 included the wonderful Banana Splits while Grandstand on the afternoon featured boxing, racing, motor racing, gymnastics and the Wales v Ireland rugby. World of Sport on ITV had women's hockey (England v West Germany), racing and wrestling. The evening entertainment on BBC1 included Dr Who, Mary Tyler Moore, Cliff Richard and Monty Python's Flying Circus, together with a Western ( Warlock) and Match Of the Day, which featured Blackpool v Leeds and Coventry City v Liverpool. ITV's evening line up included Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, The Sky's the Limit, the film Taras Bulba, starring Tony Curtis and Yul Brynner, and the Dickie Henderson show with guests Harry Secombe and Lionel Blair. The Sunday afternoon football on Shoot on Tyne Tees on 14 March was Sunderland v Portsmouth while Yorkshire TV showed Huddersfield Town v Burnley. In the cinemas, films doing the rounds included Ryan's Daughter, When Eight Bells Toll (the Daily Mirror said that Anthony Hopkins made James Bond look like a lounge lizard), Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and the Prime of Miss Jean Brodie. Meanwhile in the UK singles chart Perry Como was at number five with It's Impossible, Lynn Anderson was at four with Rose Garden, George Harrison was taking his mind off the Beatles High Court case by being at number three with My Sweet Lord, Paul McCartney was reminding George Harrison about the Beatles High Court Case by being just above him at number two with Another Day and the UK number one was Mungo Jerry with Baby Jump. So that was March 1971. Now I wonder how the 1970-71 Championship race turned out. My guess is that Spurs beat Arsenal in the last game of the season and the title went to Leeds United. (Editor’s note – Nice try but no they didn’t!)

Northallerton Town 0, Billingham Synthonia 3 Brooks Mileson League Cup

06/03/2013

By Ricky Butler Town crashed of the Brooks Mileson League Challenge Cup but there was certainly no disgrace in the performance as they took Division One side Billingham Synthonia all the way to extra time. The tie got off to an explosive start with early chances at both ends. Aiden Cattermole was denied by Town goalkeeper James Briggs, while at the other end Anderson and Chillingsworth combined well for the latter to hit a half-volley narrowly over the top. The remainder of the first half however, become a dour midfield battle with chances at a premium. Town had to reorganise inside half an hour when Anderson limped off with a groin injury giving young Callum Fletcher, who had starred in the previous round against Whickham, another opportunity to impress. But it was the Division One visitors who should have been in front just before the break. Robbie Bettison was brought down by David Alderson right on the edge of the area but referee Gary Liddle ruled it was just inside and pointed to the spot. However, Kieran Edwards blasted the kick off the top of the crossbar and into the car park. Billingham began to get on top in the second period but they could find no way past an inspired Briggs. The Town 'keeper did well to keep out a header from Daniel McWilliams ten minutes after the resumption before producing an incredible double save to deny both Bettison and Cattermole. Town were working extremely hard to keep the Synners at bay but offered very little of an attacking threat, with Chillingsworth often cutting a isolated figure. But while it remained 0-0, Town always had a chance and Fanning brought on Adam Emson twelve minutes from time in a late bid to snatch victory. And it almost paid off with five minutes of normal remaining. Emson got clear down the left after a lovely ball from Gav Parkin, but his low cross was gathered by Synners 'keeper Tim Griffiths with Fletcher waiting to pounce. However, the visitors could have spared the freezing crowd extra time when substitute Joel Callendar finally beat Briggs only to see his stoppage time effort come back off the left-hand upright. But the Synners did make the breakthrough just three minutes into the first extra period, although it took the intervention of Town substitute Dunn to finally beat Briggs. Callendar's shot from the edge of the penalty area was heading towards to the corner flag until Dunn, who had only just replaced Alderson, stuck out a leg and diverted the ball into his own net. Town were almost level within a minute when the ball fell kindly to Emson on the edge of the area but he did not get a good contact and Griffiths saved with ease. That proved to be the turning point as Billingham doubled their lead three minutes into the second extra period. Edwards played Matthew Crossen in down the right and he raced past Ian Smurthwaite before drilling the ball across the 6 yard box for Newby to turn home. Town rallied as Hickman saw a header tipped onto the crossbar Griffiths while Butterworth then chipped narrowly over the top from 25 yards. But it was the visitors who completed the scoring in the final minute. James Dowson lifted the ball over the top of the Town defence and the impressive Liddle, who had been the best player on the pitch, rounded Briggs to roll in the goal he deserved.

History of Northallerton Town

Nobody knows the exact formation date of Northallerton Town Football Club, but The Elliott Bowl, a trophy donated by local M.P. Sir George Elliott, was contested for the first time in 1895 carries the clubs name as its first winner. Known variously as Northallerton, Northallerton Alliance and Northallerton Town, the club played for many years on The Bluestone Ground behind County Hall. Many honours were won during this period including The Harrogate and District League Championship, The Richmond Cup, Bedale Cup, Milbank Cup, Orde-Powlett Cup, Dales Cup, Harrogate Invitation Cup and The Alverton Trophy. The Club was forced to leave its Bluestone Ground in 1974 when North Yorkshire County Council put a compulsory purchase order on the ground in order to extend County Hall. (The extensions never took place and the Bluestone Ground still remains a football ground to this day.) The N.Y.C.C re-housed the club on its present Ainderby Road Ground (re-named the Regency Stadium in 2006) where two pitches, a clubhouse, changing rooms and car park were officially opened on August 21st. 1976. Northallerton continued to play in the Harrogate and District League until the end of the 1981-82 season when, with chairman Stan Kirkbride and manager Neil Milestone at the helm, they successfully applied to become founder members of new the Northern League Second Division in 1982. Sadly Mr Kirkbride passed away during that first season of Northern League football and was replaced by Vice-chairman Ron Longstaff. Joining the Northern League was a big step for the club as something like £150,000 had to be raised to upgrade the Ainderby Road Ground to Northern League standards. The Club’s first game in the Northern League was on August 28th 1982 when they were defeated 4-1 at Ryhope. A week later, Town gained revenge with a 2-0 home victory when Ryhope became the first Northern League visitors to Ainderby Road. Early years in the Northern League were difficult but they reached the final of the North Riding County Cup in the 1983-84 season, unfortunately losing 2-1 to York Railway Institute. The appointment of former Burnley, Leeds United and Middlesbrough star Ray Hankin as manager in March 1989 saw an upturn in the club’s fortunes. Hankin guided them to promotion to the First Division in 1989-90 having finished runners-up in the Second Division behind champions Murton. Season 1990-91 saw the club consolidate itself in Division One, but at the end of that season Hankin resigned and his number two Geoff Cane was appointed manager. Under Cane, the Club enjoyed great success in both the F.A Trophy and the F.A Cup - reaching the last sixteen in the F.A Trophy in 1992-93 before going out to Farnborough of the Vauxhall Conference - and in the same season they reached the fourth qualifying round of the F.A Cup before narrowly losing at Accrington Stanley.

Page 27: Northallerton V Jarrow Roofing

Major ground redevelopment was carried out while Cane was in charge - a new grandstand with seating for 150 spectators was erected together with covered terracing for a further 400 spectators. The open ends behind both goals were also terraced, making the Ainderby Road ground the envy of many. The Club will always be grateful to Geoff as without him most of this work would not have been completed. Unfortunately, off the field disagreements were taking place which resulted in Cane leaving the club at the end of the 1992-93 season. Sadly Geoff passed away in 1995, aged 46. Town were now a force to be reckoned with in the Northern League and they won the League Challenge Cup in 1993-94, when they beat Blyth Spartans 2-0 in the final at Brandon. But this was to be the last game that Northallerton Town Football Club was to play. Disaster struck during the summer of 1994 when they were declared financially insolvent in the High Court and were ordered to close down. Had this happened during the playing season then there is not much doubt that the club would have folded. Fortunately there was still time before the new season started for a local businessman to come forward and rescue the club, this despite vandals breaking into the ground and daubing slogans on the stand walls and breaking all the windows in the clubhouse. A new committee was formed and the club was able to kick off the 1994-95 season under the new name of Northallerton F.C. 1994. Still in the First Division of the Northern League, the opening game was Northallerton, League Cup winners, against Durham City, League Champions, in the annual Cleator Cup. After playing a 1-1 draw after extra time, Durham won the cup on penalties. With no money available to reimburse players there was a mass exodus, and many players from local football leagues were brought in. Although these players gave their all it was no surprise when they were relegated at the end of season 1994-95. During season 1995-96, the Club gradually got back on its feet, but after a poor opening the Committee decided that players could once again be reimbursed and many of the club’s former players returned resulting in the Club finishing in a respectable 5th place in the league. During the summer of 1996 the Club was allowed to reinstate the name “Town” to once again become Northallerton Town Football Club (1994), and under the joint guidance of the management duo of Mickey Sell and John Woods, they won promotion back to the First Division when they won the Second Division Championship. For personal reasons both Sell and Woods resigned as joint managers at the end of 1996-97, although both remained at the club, Woods as assistant manager and Sell as an occasional player. After making a disastrous start to life back in the First Division (winning just three points from the first twelve games) the Club appointed former Bristol Rovers, Middlesbrough, Carlisle United and Darlington star Archie Stephens as their manager. But they fared no better, and, after finishing second bottom, they were relegated back to the Second Division. Stephens, and his assistant Woods, left the club by mutual consent at the end of the season.

Page 28: Northallerton V Jarrow Roofing

Peter Mulcaster was appointed manager at the start of the 1998-99 season, and he guided the club to a commendable fourth place in the league. But in the February of his second season (1999-00), with the club lying in third place and one of the favourites for promotion, he surprised the club with his shock resignation in order to take the vacant manager’s job at Spennymoor United. He was replaced as manager by the experienced ex-Guisborough Town boss Micky Hodgson, but after failing to win promotion at the first attempt, Hodgson and his assistant Peter Bell left the club at the end of season 2000-01. Peter Mulcaster returned to take over for his second spell as team manager at the start of the 2001-02 season, but after two seasons in charge and failing to get the team promoted, it was mutually agreed that he should leave the club at the end of season 2002-03. The very experienced former Whitby Town captain Paul Burton was appointed manager at the start of the 2003-04 season. Under Burton, Town regained First Division status when they finished runners-up in Division Two at the end of the 2005-06 season, where they also reached the final of the North Riding Senior Cup for the first time in their history - losing 3-1 to York City at Bootham Crescent. The following season (2006-07) they again reached the Senior Cup final - losing 5-0 to a strong Middlesbrough side at Billingham Synthonia. Burton surprised the club at the end of the season by handing in his resignation for what he claims were personal reasons. He was replaced by the vastly experienced Andy Toman, who lives in the Town, but he resigned after just the one season. Toman was replaced by Alan Robinson, but on the eve of the season Robinson shocked the club with his resignation as he was going to start a new life in Thailand. Ex-Doncaster Rovers player Martin Speight and former Norton & Stockton Ancients manager Stuart Dawson - who were to have been Robinson’s assistants - were appointed as joint managers, but following a run of poor results, Dawson left the club in early January. Speight was then appointed sole manager but results failed to improve and, following the heavy 5-1 home defeat by Ashington at the end of March, he also resigned. Mark Fanning, who had been part of the coaching staff at Darlington FC, was appointed and he is now in his fourth season as manager. Last season, Fanning guided the club to their first silverware in 18 years when they came from behind to beat Second Division champions Team Northumbria 3-2 in the final of the Ernest Armstrong Cup.
