Skills for LifeTutor Training Opportunities
North West Directory
Fusion: Connecting Business and Education is a collaborative project in the North West aimed at bringing
together the further education (FE) sector and key agencies including Business Link, the Learning and Skills
Council (LSC) and Jobcentre Plus, to improve the responsiveness and quality of workforce development in
the region.
As part of the Fusion “Skills for Life” project we have conducted a mapping exercise of the Skills for Life tutor
training provision within the North West. This identifies whether provision is adequate to meet the needs of
providers within the region, by assessing if there is a sufficient spread of high quality provision across all five
sub-regions, for the delivery of the Skills for Life subjects; literacy, numeracy and language (ESOL).
The results of this exercise have been collated and recorded in this North West Directory of Basic Skills/Skills
for Life Tutor Training Opportunities, which identifies the extent, location and range of SFL tutor training
course provision, available in the five North West sub-regions.
This directory will be updated periodically throughout the year to ensure that you have current and relevant
data at hand.

AWARD IN PREPARING TO TEACH IN THE LIFELONG LEARNING SECTOR (PTLLS) at Level 3 or 4 on the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF)
All new teachers or teachers, who do not currently hold a teaching qualification, need to complete an
introductory programme to give them a threshold licence to teach. If the programme is accredited, it leads to
a Level 3 or 4 Award in Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS). For most people this will
form the first part of a larger teacher training programme. Subject: generic teaching, or may be available in
the context of literacy, numeracy or ESOL
CERTIFICATE IN TEACHING IN THE LIFELONG LEARNING SECTOR (CTLLS) at Level 3 or 4, or may be higher if awarded by a university
This course provides the first step towards the new teacher training qualifications for all those entering
the teaching, learning and development profession from September 2007. Achievement can be at either
Level 3 or 4. Completion will give participants a brief overview of the elements of teaching and learning and
completion provides the first unit in the full DTLLS qualification (see below). This course can be completed
pre-service or in-service.
L5 DIPLOMA IN TEACHING IN THE LIFELONG LEARNING SECTOR (DTLLS)
This two-year course is designed for those already in a teaching role or intending to enter the profession. The
qualification is appropriate for teachers, tutors and trainers who may be working in an FE College, Adult and
Community Learning or delivering work-based learning. Those who achieve the qualification can use it to
claim Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills Status (QTLS). The course will be delivered in separate units and
all learners will have an individual learning plan to monitor their progress. Teaching practice is a requirement
of the course so learners must be able to access 150 teaching hours to enable them to complete the course.
NB. Teachers of literacy, numeracy and ESOL will also need a subject-specific qualification – see below
L5 ADDITIONAL DIPLOMA IN TEACHING ENGLISH (LITERACY) OR MATHEMATICS (NUMERACY) IN THE LIFELONG LEARNING SECTOR
The Additional Diplomas in Teaching Mathematics (Numeracy) and English (Literacy) in the Lifelong Learning
Sector are designed for teachers or potential teachers who wish to specialise in the teaching of Mathematics
(Numeracy) and English (Literacy). They can follow a DTLLS programme of initial teacher training (please
see above), choosing the appropriate optional units and then complete the Additional Diploma unit to
become fully qualified.
