Principal's Message 02/01/2018 by Tommy Blanchard Dear North Families, We live in a technological world. Students and adults experience significant screen time. Students must know how to interact with others via technology. However, our children and our students must also know how to interact with one another without the use of technology. Students text one another while standing next to that person. Look around the next time you are in a restaurant and observe how many people are on their phones. Often times, our children learn from what they see the adults doing. Highland Elementary School had a great quote up recently that read, “Hug your child, not your phone.” If you don’t currently do this, try some tech-free time in your house and provide opportunities for family members to interact and converse. We are now one week into the new semester. Students are given a clean slate. It is a new beginning with no missing assignments or assessments. Please encourage your student to attend school and put their best effort forward. Please be proactive and communicate with teachers throughout the semester. PowerSchool is a great way to keep up on your child’s assignments and attendance. Please contact the counseling center for help if you have not yet signed up for PowerSchool. I want to thank all of the families for the wonderful students we see every day. We are not immune to attendance and behavior issues, but there are so many good kids that walk the halls and grace our classrooms. We have an old school, hot classrooms, crowded hallways and limited parking, but we still have kids coming every day to learn and grow as people and we appreciate the opportunity to assist in that process. Have a great February. Mr. Blanchard North Middle School - February 2018 https://d7fus.grantspass.k12.or.us/Newsletter/FullNewsletter.cfm?chose... 1 of 14 2/2/2018, 2:15 PM

Cold and Flu season is well under way, and it is important that we work together to keep our childrenhealthy. Viruses spread easily among children. You can help prevent the spread of illness and flu or helpyour child get better if he/she does get sick by following a few simple steps:
You and your child could benefit from getting a flu shotRemind your child to cover his/her nose and mouth with a tissue when sneezing or coughing and
dispose of the tissue immediately
Wash hands frequently with soap and warm water for at least 20 secondsDisinfect frequently-touched surfaces and shared items at least once a dayEnsure that bathrooms are stocked with soap, hand towels and tissuesTeach your child not to touch his/her mouth, nose and eyesIf your child is sick and has a fever, keep him/her at home to prevent the spread of illness to others(including staying home until fever free without the use of medication)Try to avoid close contact with sick people

Common symptoms of flu include: high fever, severe headache, muscle and body aches, exhaustion, anddry cough. Additionally, children often exhibit other flu symptoms that are rare in adults, such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. If your child develops symptoms and you are concerned that they might have the flu, call your doctor early, especially if they have a chronic disease (eg.asthma). The physician may prescribean antiviral medication, which can help lessen the duration of the virus and reduce the risk of complications, such as pneumonia. To be effective, antiviral medication should be taken within 12-48 hours after flusymptoms begin.
Remember, Immunization Exclusion Day is Wednesday,
February 21, 2018
If your child is missing any school required immunizations, or if you have not shared the up-dated record withthe school, please do so as soon as possible, so that they won’t miss school.

Parents of Teens02/09/2018
by North Staffer
Parents of teens are a special breed. We go into this gig changing diapers and feeding and bathing ourkids— they start off so dependent upon us. Then all of the sudden, they push us away. How do we keep thedoor open at the most critical time in their lives?
Start by asking questions that can’t be answered “yes” or “no.” Examples: What was the high and lowpoint in your day? What made you laugh today? What do you worry most about? Who outside of family doyou really admire/respect? What was the most interesting thing that happened at school/(work) today? Many families actually take turns answering these questions around the dinner table. Avoid questionswhere the answer is already provided: “Emily sure is mean, isn’t she?” It sounds so simple, but familymembers who bond with each other over dinner with the television off and engaged in conversation witheach other have fewer battles over homework/grades, curfew, substance abuse, and which peers kids hangout with!
