Funds Donated To Kinsealy Centre A long awaited community centre for the Kinsealy/Melrose area will be given some funding from the Swords Baptist Church as a thank you to the residents of the area. This comes as wonderful news as locals have spent more than 20 years campaigning for the project to go ahead. In June, the county council confirmed finance would be ring-fenced for the project. Through the local authority, a total of 1 million was donated by the Baptist Church and in return the church were given some land in Kinsealy to build a new complex of their own. The new community centre will inject life and vibrancy into the area and from a practical perspec- tive, this will hugely benefit the youth of Kinsealy, which is growing in size all the time. They will now have their own facility to enjoy various activities and will no longer have to travel to Swords or Malahide to use other community centres. Speaking about the imminent project, a delighted Jim Keely, Chairman of the Melrose/Kinsealy Residents Association told the County Leader: “It’s wonderful that our residents will at last have their own centre. There really is a great need for this facility, particularly for our young people. We recently held a festival and for the second year running over 200 children signed up, so the demand for a centre has always been very apparent.” Continued on page 21 School principals around the North County have welcomed the decision by school book publishers to hold off on publishing revised textbooks for a four year period. This is a move which will surely ease ‘back to school’ costs for already hard pressed parents across the region in the years to come. This news has been confirmed to the County Leader by a spokesperson for the Department of Education and Science. The welcome news comes following a hugely successful Saint Vincent de Paul (SVP) petition, backed heavily by schools across our region, and meetings held between Education Minister, Ruairi Quinn, and the Irish Educational Publishers Association (IEPA) a number of weeks ago. Speaking to the County Leader, principal of St Finian’s Community College Swords, Ms Denise Kelly backed the plan saying, “We are also delighted that this commitment has been made. We run a very successful book rental programme in our school in order to ease the burden on parents and it is very popular, even though our Co-ordi- nator, Ms Jane Farrell, spends a lot of time on it, we feel the work is worth it in these difficult economic times.” Eddie Fynes, principal of Loreto Girls’ School in Balbriggan, Sharon McGrath, principal of Fingal Community College in Swords and Miriam Dowdall, principal of St Helen’s JNS, Portmarnock, were of the same opinion. Ms McDowell said, “It is something we would definitely back, we have introduced our own system on a smaller scale where we would recycle books back into it yearly. Anything that cuts down costs for parents is most welcome,” she said. Mr Fynes added, “I’m totally supportive of this and we feel that there is no need for book companies to bring out revised editions, unless it is totally necessary. We are very conscious of handing down books from child to child. Similarly, Ms McGrath, welcomed the deci- sion. “This agreement is just great and benefits everyone from students’ parents to teachers and staff. We have our own very successful book rental scheme, but this now means an improvement will be made both logistically and practically with the same books being made available over a four-year period,” she said. Denis Barry, President of St Vincent de Paul in River Valley told the County Leader, “We made strong representation to have the entire school book scheme reviewed. At last, the minister is seeing the light and putting pressure on the publishers to rethink,” he said. It now means that books can be passed on to younger siblings providing families across the County, with publishers agreeing not to produce any revisions to books within four-years of publication. A sponsored sea swim in aid of Kidney Research atBeaumont Hospital took place on the 21st of Augustlast. The swim was from Lambay Island to RushHarbour. The event was organised by John andJosephine Evers, from Gormanston who had a very

special reason to support the Kidney ResearchBeaumont Hospital. “Josephine donated her kidney tome in January 2010,” said John. Eleven brave swimmerscame along to join John and Josephine and their son tosupport this worthwhile cause. The distance betweenLambay Island and Rush Harbour is 4.3 km, but theswimmers could not follow a straight line so most ofthem swam about 6 km or even more. It was extremelyhard for them as the weather was not at all in theirfavour. John’s consultant, Joseph Walsh from BeaumontHospital was waiting for them at the shore to make surehis patient was feeling well. I was very impressed withthe effort. “The sponsored swim was a great success!”

K evin Thorp’s soft English accent beliesthe fact that he has lived in Rush forclose on 40 years. He arrived home to

Ireland from Manchester on 16th August 1974with his wife, Mary and two young sons andfollowing a brief spell in Delvin, Co.Westmeath, they moved into a house in HandPark in the town.Kevin was born in the border region ofAughnacloy, Co. Tyrone in 1940 and followingWorld War II, moved with his mother and siblingsto Manchester while his British father was stillaway on active duty in mainland Europe. LeavingAughnacloy was a massive wrench for the fiveyear old. “During the war, the American armywere stationed in a huge camp nearby and for twoyears the town was buzzing. It was like LasVegas, we had neon lights, a soda fountain and acinema,” Kevin explains. “Instead of dying andwanting to go to heaven, I wanted to die and go toAmerica,” he laughs. Unfortunately in 1944 allthis changed. “The Americans disappeared oneday. We didn’t know it at the time, but they werethe D Dayinvaders and hadleft forN o r m a n d y .While initially stillquite prosperous, the townquietened downconsiderably andby the time thewar was over itwas completelydead. There wasnothing.”In 1945 Kevin hadto leave behindall he had everknown, includinghis grandfatherJohn’s farmwhere he’dwhiled away hisdays. “I watcheda green lorrycollecting what-ever bits of furni-ture we had tohead for Belfast and travel across the Irish Sea.Not knowing what lay ahead I was so excited,” hesays. “In that one day I saw my first train, my firstdouble decker bus, my first tram and my first ship.I can still see its huge big yellow funnel.”He describes living in ‘an Irish bubble’ inManchester where the family listened to JoeLinnane on Radio Eireann broadcasting fromAthlone. “I was a foreigner in England, the kids inschool couldn’t understand me when I spoke. One day I said to my mother, “I want to go back. Idon’t want to stay here,” but of course that wasn’tpossible. It led to me developing two ambitionsin life. One was to live to be 70 which I have now,and the other was to get back to Ireland, an ambi-tion I finally realised on 16th August 1974.”Originally buying a home in Delvin, Co.Westmeath, Kevin moved to Rush a few monthslater when he secured a teaching post in Scoil ArdMhuire, next door to Trinity House. “Rush is thefriendliest place I’ve been in all my life,” he says.“I’m 37 years here and Elizabeth Hughes, the firstperson who spoke to me when I arrived said,‘welcome to Rush.’ Since that day I have nevernot felt welcome.”He is immersed in the life of his adopted homeand among his many hobbies, he teaches Frenchas an extra-curricular course in St. Catherine’sprimary school on Wednesday afternoons ‘to havesomeone to speak French to.’ “I love France andeverything about it, well except the bureaucracy,”he laughs.Kevin’s teaching career began by accidentfollowing a short-lived, unsuccessful spell trainingto be an accountant in Manchester. “One day, Mr.

Heath, the head fella in the accountants sent forme and said ‘Kevin, all you do all day is talk. Talk, talk, talk! I’ll give you three months to find a jobwhere they pay you for talking.’ It was the bestadvice I had in my whole life! Within six weeks Ihad been accepted at de la Salle Training Collegein Midleton, near Manchester and I loved it.”His first teaching position was in a huge compre-hensive school in Farnworth, Manchester wherehe taught Geography and History beforebecoming the Special Needs teacher for theschool. This move proved fortuitous, as his expe-rience in special education eventually enabledhim secure a teaching post in Ireland without theprerequisite knowledge of Irish. Initially, Kevintaught in Oberstown before moving to Finglas and

e v e n t u a l l ysettling in HolyTrinity School inD o n a g h m e d e .“When I went toDonaghmede itwas like I’d goneto heaven,” Kevinl a u g h s .Unfortunately hehad to take earlyretirement a fewyears later havingsuffered a seriousheart attack,selling the publi-cation he editedcalled RushCommunity News,on 13th April1986. “I decidedas I was given thelast rites that Iwasn’t going todie, and woke upto see a fella with

a beard beside me saying “I’m the new doctorhere and you’re my first patient’. It was of course,Dr. James Reilly, our Minister for Health,” Kevinlaughs. Despite the seriousness of his condition,on the way to the hospital, Kevin asked the ambu-lance man to stop at his house to collect pyjamasand a book to read, “so I wouldn’t die ofboredom,” he explains.Kevin’s book shelves are crammed with inter-esting and eclectic volumes, including his latefather’s painting and decorating encyclopaedias.“I can’t even go to the toilet without something toread,” he laughs. Nearly all the books I have arereference books, the only novel I ever read wasThe Good Earth by Pearl Buck and that was givento me when I had my coronary and I’d nothing elseto read. I have an insatiable curiosity for knowl-edge and at the same time an incredible urge tospread that knowledge and the danger is at whatpoint do you become boring?” he laughs. His role as editor of Rush Community News, enables him to indulge his curiosity and thirst forknowledge. “Having been editor of theCommunity News before my heart attack in 1986, Itook on the role again four or five years agothinking it would be nice and easy …of course ifwasn’t! It takes me two solid weeks work everymonth,” Kevin comments obviously relishing thechallenge. “If I were ever to be divorced, my wifeMary would cite the Community News as co-respondent. It’s my whole ‘raison d’etre,’ Kevinlaughs. He welcomes articles and submissionsfrom people in the Rush and Skerries area for themonthly publication and they can be emailed tohim at [email protected].

Local councillor and NorthCounty school principal,Tom Kelleher (Lab) hascondemned the recentdecision to increase schoolclass sizes. He highlightedthe importance of a child’seducation and early devel-opment.Cllr Kelleher, principal ofRolestown N.S, was

responding to aDepartment of Educationproposal set to feature inthe next budget, which willmean a greater pupil toteacher ratio and lessteaching posts across theNorth County. Theproposal for the increase is

expected to feature withinthe next budget and willnot affect this term’s classsizes. However, it isthought that the increasecould be implementedfrom as early as September2012.Speaking to the CountyLeader, Kellehercondemned the move,

citing a need for opposi-tion: “It’s a pity (about theincrease), and I think, it issomething we should

oppose. It is a step back-wards in education, withthe importance of an earlystart in a child’s life, educa-tion wise, being as impor-tant now as it ever was.” The decision will mean thatprimary school classes, such as Rolestown N.S, willincrease from an average27 to 28 pupils, while

secondary school classsizes would rise from thenational average of 19 to20 pupils.

“We need to retain ourability to provide a highlyeducated workforce, andwe are not going to do thatby making all these cuts. Alot of other countries haveexperienced similar finan-cial difficulties, yet they’vedecided not to interferewith their educationalsystem, with some even

spending money and even-tually working their wayout of a recession,” saidKelleher. The move is sure to causewidespread disappoint-ment for families acrossthe County with theproposed cuts to specialneeds and the reintroduc-tion of third level fees alsolooming.

As a local paper, North County Leader recog-nises the wonderful work and positive

contribution being made by the numerous volun-tary organisations in the North County andcaptures that with photographs which are muchappreciated by those involved. It brings the experi-ences of the various groupings into the publicdomain and generates an enthusiasm for others to emulate. The paper is inclu-sive, covering the major issues and blends that quite successfully with busi-ness/trade advertising, sporting events and community achievements(and it is free). May I wish North County Leader continued success intothe future.

"Given the importance of local enterprise toour economy and our community, particularly

in these difficult times, it is most encouraging tohave the North County Leader as a channel for smallbusinesses to promote themselves. The Leader hascontinually supported local enterprise promotioninitiatives and plays an important role in helping tocultivate a positive entrepreneurial environment, as evidenced by theirsupport of the Fingal Student Enterprise Awards programme. The much anticipatedSwords Heritage Week isupon us at last. It allkicked off on Thursdaylast, 25th August andwill continue untilSaturday, 3rdSeptember. This yearmarks the 25th year ofcelebrating the Heritage,Art and Culture ofSwords. This annualcelebration hascontinued since the veryfirst one in 1987, whenthe first Swords HeritageFestival began as theformer Dublin CountyCouncil’s project for theEuropean Year of theEnvironment. From these humblebeginnings, a voluntary

committee was set upand has continuedover the years topresent a programmeof events, which ishoped will encourage

an interest in the culturaland historical aspects ofSwords and environs. The current economicdownturn has providedan opportunity forartists, writers, storytellers and musicians todisplay their hiddentalents. The committeedecided to focus ongiving them a forum todisplay their talents. The festival started onThursday, 25th Augustlast with a ‘Tell A TaleDay’ which is the themefor this year’s festival. Many stories fromaround the North Countywere regaled, all in theshadow of St Columba’sRound Tower and in thepresence of CountyMayor, Cllr. GerryMcGuire. Saturday was

Kinsealy’s day, with awalk around the area, which was expertlyconducted by Mick Kellyand gave people anopportunity to meet anddevelop friendshipsalong the way.

On Sunday last, 28thAugust, there was a walkaround Historic Swords, which started at St.Colmcille’s Well, aroundSt Columba’s Towers, taking in the graveyardwith its interesting head-stones, which revealedmuch about the turbu-lent past of the town.Today, Tuesday, 30thAugust will see thelaunch of SwordsHeritage Week byCounty Mayor, GerryMcGuire. A presentationof awards in Short Storycompetition, Poet ofFingal and What SwordsMeans To Me will takeplace at 8.30 pm in theCarnegie Court Hotel, with a reception after-wards courtesy of Davidand Mary Grant. The ever popular SwordsVoices will be launchedby Michael Kennedy onWednesday, 31st Augustat 8.30pm in Taylor’sStar pub on Main Street. This is the 18th in theseries of memories ofold Swords, told bythose who helped tomake it happen. It will befollowed by a reception,

courtesy of the Star.Thursday, 1st Septemberwill see the launch of theannual Art Exhibition bydeputy Brendan Ryan atSt Columba’s Church, starting at 8.30pm andwill include musical

entertainment. This isalways a very popularevent and is wellsupported. It will run forthe next three days, untilSaturday 3rd September.Speaking to the CountyLeader about theHeritage Week,Bernadette Marks fromthe Swords HistoricalSociety said: "Theannual celebrationstarted in 1987 when thefirst Swords HeritageFestival began. Thevoluntary committee, with the backing of theCounty Council hascontinued over the yearsto present a programmeof events which willencourage an interest inthe cultural history of ourarea." "Like last year, becauseof the continuing down-turn in our economy thecommittee decided tofocus on giving a forumto artists, writers, storytellers and musicians todisplay some of thehidden talent in thearea," she continued. With the ever increasingpopulation of Swords,Heritage Week provides

an ideal opportunity fornewer residents to famil-iarise themselves withthe area where they live. Many dedicated volun-teers offer their precioustime to ensure that asmuch information as

possible is available topeople to enjoy and tosoak up the rich historythat this ancient townhas to offer. The openingup of Swords Castle has

revealed a true sense ofhistory about the town, which had been wellhidden up to now.Similarly, the Church ofSt Columba with itsimpressive RoundTowers and ancientgraveyard provide uswith a true sense of ourcolourful and sometimes, turbulent past. The Swords HeritageWeek would not bepossible without thesupport and interest ofthe County Council, localbusinesses and all thesupport from the resi-dents and has somethingto offer everyone and allwho participate in atleast some of the events, will be enriched with aprecious knowledge ofour cultural and histor-ical past. Each year theHeritage Week isdeemed a great successand there is no reason tobelieve that this year willbe any different. So comealong and soak up someculture.

LANDSCAPING NEEDSA large crowd turned out for the Balbriggan Food Festivalrecently, to sample the finest food Balbriggan has to offer.Live bands and a brass and reed band entertained thecrowds, while the public sampled over 20 different foodstalls, watched live cooking demonstrations with profes-sional chef, Stephen Grimes and enjoyed the great atmos-phere. The mobile petting farm was a big hit with the chil-dren, who also got their faces painted and partook in artsand crafts. The event was organised by a sub committee ofBalbriggan Chamber of Commerce. Speaking to theCounty Leader, Manager of the Bracken Court HotelGeorge O'Gara said, “The event is a great success, our seafood chowder made by our hotel chef has been flying outthe door.” Pictured at the event is Cathaoirleach ofBalbriggan Town Council, Grainne Maguire with AmandaMadden from Country Crest, based in Lusk who produceready meals. RTÉ’s Weather Presenter Nuala Carey will launchFingal Volunteer Expo on Thursday 1st Septemberin The Pavilions Shopping Centre, Swords from 12noon until 8pm. This event is being organised aspart of Fingal Volunteer Centre’s activities for TheEuropean Year of Volunteering 2011. The firstVolunteer Expo 2011 took place in Blanchardstownin March. Fingal Volunteer Centre is a one-stopshop for voluntary activity, providing volunteeringopportunities for the public, sourcing much neededvolunteers for organisations and providing supportfor organisations in managing volunteers. A total of21 organisations, who are currently recruitingvolunteers in the greater North County area will bepresent looking to recruit new volunteers to jointhem this Autumn. Fingal Volunteer Expo 2011 isaimed at helping organisations in attracting peoplewho are interested in becoming volunteers, butwho may not know exactly where or how to goabout it. It is just one of many services provided free to volunteer involving organisationsacross the county. “This is a great opportunity for organisations toshowcase their volunteer opportunities and let the

community know about the work they do. Also tonetwork with other organisations; and get toengage with Fingal Volunteer Centre and developnew opportunities,” said Stuart Garland, ManagerFingal Volunteer Centre. Volunteers are very welcome to come along on theday and find out more about volunteering in 2011.Alternatively, you can drop into one of their nineoutreach venues in the Fingal Libraries. If you’d liketo register as a volunteer, or simply want to viewthe opportunities available, log onto our web sitewww.volunteerfingal.ie.

The St Vincent de Paul (SVP) is one of the most recog-nisable charity organisations in the country and like allcharities, is in need of extra volunteers. Denis Barry isPresident of St Vincent de Paul in River Valley and heexplained the workings of the organisation. “Our primefunction is as a visitation conference and we visit ourclientele in their homes. It is a very privileged positionto be invited to a person’s home,” he said. “Peoplethink that we only give money, but we also hand outmaterially, like objects that are required by a client andwe work closely with other agencies in respect of refer-rals,” he said. Denis was keen to promote the newimage of the organisation. “Years ago, people saw usas the last resort and in the gutter. We emphasise thatnobody should be embarrassed to approach us forhelp. Our image today is much different and 100 percent confidentiality is assured. The cornerstone of ouractions is respect and dignity of the person,” he said. The Dublin North County conference runs from Swordsto the Meath border, both north and west. Dublin Northhas 75 members and about 2,500 clients and stillgrowing. In Swords alone, there are 28 members and aclientele of around 500, so the need for volunteers isobvious. “Our call rate in Swords is up by 38 per centsince last year,” said Denis. To become a member, simply ring SVD Headquarters in Sean McDermottStreet at 01-8550022 and mention your desire tobecome a volunteer. The next meeting will be heldthere on 8th September at 6.30pm. Everythingcollected locally is distributed locally, without excep-tion, which also benefits the local economy as well.

Ireland and Germany are two of the countriesin the EU which have a high percentage ofpeople reading newspapers regularly. Butwhen an Irish and a German paper are lyingside by side, some differences are obvious, especially ifthey’re localnewspapers. InGerman papersadvertising andnews are sepa-rated strictly. Youwill never find anadvertisement on the front page, unless it is avery lowbrow paper or a magazine. I wasastonished that in Irish papers everything ismixed up. Furthermore, Irish local paperscover local issues. It’s easy to get in touch

with people and things that happen aroundyou. German ones have a bigger politics andbusiness section, even though it can benational or international. Local affairs arerepresented in a special section. For me, it’s

surprising toread an articleabout, or to see apicture of peopleI know in thepaper, whichmust be a quitecommon experi-

ence for Irish people. In the end, I canmention one definite advantage of Irishpapers: it’s easier to get one. In Germany noone is standing on the street handing out orselling the current edition.
