Highly acclaimed festivals were a major feature and they proved to be a real attraction for both locals and visitors alike. Stakeholders including the County Council, local Chambers of Commerce, Fingal Tourism and repre- sentatives of the local hospitality sector, all deserve great credit for their vision and foresight in attracting more tourists than ever to the region. Practically every town and village in the North County has made great strides to ensure that visitors and resi- dents have reaped the benefits of the area. Excellent festivals like Flavours of Fingal, which took place in July last have played a major role in attracting visitors to the area. Indeed it was heartening to discover the amount of families from outside the county who see this as a must visit event. The new Swords festival was an outstanding success in ensuring that the town is now becoming a tourist desti- nation in its own right. The opening of Swords castle to the public has been instrumental in this. A further indi- cation of this welcome trend is evidenced by the amount of top quality restaurants that are springing up in the town, offering tourists and locals a wide choice of affordable international cuisine. The fact that Swords is in pole position to receive a Purple Flag, which is granted to towns with exceptional night-time entertainment and hospitality facilities is a great boost. The hope is that the Purple Flag will be a common sight in all of North County towns soon. It is clear that, with imaginative direction and determi- nation by many of the stakeholders, particularly the County Council, there is no reason that the North County cannot emulate the likes of Galway and have festivals all summer long, the length and breadth of the county, from Balbriggan to Howth. Earlier in the year, the Balbriggan Summerfest once again was a resounding success and is instrumental in showcasing the many fine attractions that the town has to offer. Colourful parades were a great crowd pleaser and this festival continue to grow year on year. Skerries held its Soundwaves festival, as well as hosting the final stage of the An Post Ras for the tenth time in succession. The riders regard the atmosphere in the town as quite unique, and it is seen by them as one of the highlights of the event. Rush Harbour festival is proving to be one of the most eagerly awaited events on the festival calendar in the North County, and is attracting a record amount of visitors to the town for the past few years. Angela Byrne of the organising committee said, “This year Rush Harbour Festival was an amazing success for both us as organisers and for the town of Rush. Visitors came from far and wide to enjoy the festival, families returned from abroad and celebrated with their families the wonderful amenities that Rush has to offer, they danced, sang built sandcastles and participated in all the events at the Festival.” “People remarked on the amazing atmosphere in the town, the Heritage Train brought visitors on a tour of Rush and gave them a brief insight into our heritage and history. The Art Exhibition displayed the amazing talent of our local artists, the craft fair showed our wonder craft talent. Rush has now become the ‘go to place’ over the August bank holiday weekend. Plans are well ahead already for 2016 and we look forward to welcoming a large influx of visitors to our town again,” she said. Donabate/Portrane also held a successful festival and one of the organisers, Adrian Henchy said, “The turnout for this event was incredible with over five hundred attending this event which far exceeded the Committee’s expectations. It was really wonderful to see so many families from the Donabate Portrane Community availing of the fabulous facilities at Newbridge House and farm. The committee are now looking forward to a well earned rest, but are equally excited at the preparations for the 2016 Festival.” Similarly a great atmosphere was created by the ‘Malahide Has It’ festival recently, which attracted visi- tors from far and wide. This year’s event was particu- larly successful, and showcased this beautiful town to all. The hard working committee deserve great praise for their efforts here. The County Council are delighted with the increase in visitor footfall all over the county. Ethna Felten, Director of Operations in Fingal County Council said, “We are delighted with the surge in tourist numbers. The outlook for the tourism sector is buoyant and over- seas demand is forecast to grow by 5 per cent per annum. The development of the Fingal Tourism Strategy this year covering the period 2015 - 2018 outlines the definitive pathway to tourism devel- opment in the North County, with the support and buy-in of relevant public, private and community tourism stake- holders.” “In addition, the North County is well positioned to capitalise on the Grow Dublin Tourism Alliance that has been established to drive a new collaborative strategy to market the Dublin region in the international marketplace,” she said. “Events was one of the reasons to visit the area identi- fied in the Fingal Tourism Strategy. Fingal County Council manages and supports a large number of events in the local area each year. We are committed to continuing this support and grow the number of visi- tors to Fingal to generate revenue and employment for the local economy,” she concluded. The 8th Annual Hollywood Lakes Golf Day for StFrancis Hospice took place on 7th August last atHollywood Lakes Golf Club. The event, which washeld in excellent weather conditions was aresounding success, with 50 teams of four takingpart. So successful was the event that a twoshotgun start will be be used next year to accom-modate the numbers looking to play. After the event, the golfers enjoyed a BBQ andentertainment which was provided free of chargeby ‘Nostalgia’, which was enjoyed by all. A specialword of thanks goes to club professional, Krishnan, who partook in a ‘Beat the Pro’ contest, where heraised almost €1,000. This involved him waiting atthe 4th tee box and challenging all-comers to getnearer the pin than him on the par 3 hole. Tragic Death Of PortmarnockGAA StarThe man who tragically died after a fall inTanzania has been named as 20 year-old GovanJolliffe Byrne from Portmarnock, who was back-packing with friends in East Africa since June. His death is being described as a tragic acci-dent. It is believed that he fell from a balcony ina night club in Zanzibar, Tanzania in the earlyhours of Sunday last.He was a student in NUI Maynooth and playedGAA with local Portmarnock team, NaomhMearnóg. The club paid tribute to the youngman as a “true legend” who was always thesoul of the party and everyone’s friend. He willnever be forgotten. Our thoughts are with thefamily and friends of Govan Byrne. A tragic andextremely sad loss to our senior footballers.”Club chairman, Michael Hannon said, Govanwas “a very well liked young man” who wasvery well respected in the area and said therewas a sense of shock locally following the newsof his death. Nobody ever had a bad word tosay about him. He was a lovely young fellow. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family,”he added.Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.

Gertie wasone of those mostardent and tenaciouscampaigners for roadsafety since the 1980swhen she lost her 19year old daughterPaula in a road traffic

collision caused by adrink driver.” “Gertie spoke outabout drink-drivingwhen it wasn’tpopular to do so.Much of the legisla-tion in place today toprevent drink driving, and the sea change inpublic attitudes tothis abhorrent behav-iour, was madepossible in part dueto Gertie’s tirelesswork to ensure noother familiesendured the devasta-tion caused by theloss of her daughterPaula,” she said.“When I spoke to mycolleagues aboutGertie, many wordsand phrases wereused – compas-sionate, tenacious, ambassador for roadsafety, forgiving, dedicated. Over the past numberof weeks, the CountyLeader has been givingyou some top tips tohelp you out on yourbig day, and this week,we’re moving ontohow to get yourself asorganised as possibleon the morning of yourwedding. The trick to making thehustle and bustle moreexciting than stressfulis to make out a shorttimetable (and keep toit!) You don’t have to

get into incredibledetails but it’s handyto have a notebookwith approximatearrival times of yourlocal suppliers (alsohave a contact numberjotted down for each,so that anyone cangive a call while you’reworking away your-self), timing for hairand make-up etc to befinished and the lastpossible minute youcan get into yourdress.

Give Directions With Invitations

This is one tip that asurprising amount ofcouples don’t heed.

For peace of mind(and piece of sanity)on your big day, sendany directions or infoneeded to all guestswith their invitations.Knowing that you’vedone al l you can toget people to thewedding, means thatyourself and yourhusband-to-be canturn your phones offwithout so much as awince.

Give YourPhotographer

A Hand

Once you’ve done allyour research and arehappy with yourphotographer (theNorth County hasmany skilled photog-rapher avai lable tochoose from), youshouldn’t really needto be worried aboutgetting the shots you

want on the day. I fyou want a mixture ofdocumentary styleshots and posedpictures, assign abridesmaid orgroomsman to thetask. .

Get Some Dress Help

This is an obvious tip,but one which is oftenforgotten; make suresomebody knows howto get you in and outof your dress! Assignsomeone to this taskand make sure you doa quick dressrehearsal the week ofthe wedding, so thatyour dresser iscomfortable to takecharge on the day.

Create An‘Emergency Bag’

Your emergency kit isyour saviour for theday and wil l holdeverything you needfor any nasty l i t t lesituation. Start bymaking a list of all thethings you might needthroughout yourwedding day, from themoment you wake upto when you go tobed. A good emer-gency kit will prepareyou for anything theday throws at you, from dress stains(pack some chalk!) toheadaches and more.

Get The WeddingCar Sorted Out

If you want to avoid apit stop in white torun in a grab anythingyou have forgotten, kit out your car withall you’ll need on theway to the ceremony, and later, the recep-tion. You’ll need lotsof water to keep youhydrated for the day,and it’s also handy tohave a few nibbles inthe car too to keepyour sugar levels up.Stop into your localshop to get all the bits

you need well aheadof the day.

Assign Someone To The Gifts

Have somebody thereto take care of anycards or gifts you aregiven on the day. Aska member of thebridal party to keepeverything togetherfor you, and if there’sany gifts, to jot downnames of people on anotepad. This is agood way to makesure nothing goesmissing with all thehustle and bustle ofthe day.

Entertain The Kids

If you’re having childrenat your wedding, youshould think aboutimplementing a fewstructures to keep thementertained. If you arehaving more than fourunder agers, hiring aprofessional to do theentertaining for you isimmediately going totake a whole heap offyour shoulders. You willfind one of these here inthe North County. However if you’re onlyhaving one or two, makeup some goodie bagswith little toys from thelocal shop a few weeksbefore.

Celebrating 20 Richie’s Bike Store, which is ideally situ-ated in Town Centre Mall, off Main Streetin Swords, has developed into one ofDublin’s premier cycle stores special-ising in quality bicycles and accessories. It opened for business at its present location inAugust 1995. Proprietor, Richie McNamara is veryproud of the business he set up and as he cele-brates 20 years serving the public in Swords, hetold the County Leader about the secrets of hissuccess. “We cater for all ages of cyclists, whetherit be a beginner leisure cyclist, or a pure thorough-bred racing cyclist, we are your one stop cycleshop.”“Our fully qualified, professional staff are on handfrom 10 am to 6pm Monday to Saturday to serveyou and offer you quality and informed advice, whatever your query may be, to the best of theirknowledge and ability. We pride ourselves onhaving the ability to pair each customer with thebicycle most suited to their everyday needs.”“We run a “same day” repair service, which meansyou and your bicycle are off the road for minimaltime. Small repairs are generally done on the spotto allow minimum inconvenience to customers.Whether it’s our very competitive pricing, outstanding service or huge selection, we can guar-antee you won’t be disappointed.”Richie’s Bike Store also provides a unique service tohis many clients. “With every bike that we sell, along with the manufacturers’ guarantee, whichgenerally applies to the frames and the parts, wealso service our own bikes free of charge for as longas people own them. This is a massive selling pointfor us, as we know of no other bicycle shop thatprovides such a service,” he said.“We always stick to brands that provide value formoney for our clients. We don’t carry a brand justbecause it’s a recognised brand, and if we discovera brand of bike that is better value for money, weincorporate that particular brand into our shop.Over the years we have dealt with many brands ofbike in an effort to satisfy the requirements of ourcustomers,” he said.

Quality products and value for money are of para-mount importance to Richie and his team whocater for all people from kids all the way up to themost lightweight professional racing bikes, withsomething to suit all budgets.Richie’s Bike Store is involved with various cyclingclubs in the area, including the Garda Cycling Club.“We have also just started to sponsor another localclub as well called Chapel Lane CC. This entailsproviding them with their cycling clothing at adiscounted price, below what it costs us to buy. Wetry to give them the same quality clothing as theprofessionals use at very reasonable prices. Wealso assist them throughout the year with any eventor activity the club may be promoting. We also undertake much of the bicycle maintenancefor the Gardai. We supplied them with a largeamount of their bicycle fleet as well as some of theirmountain bike uniform and we service most of theGarda stations that have the mountain bike facilityin Dublin. We provide a wide range of cycling clothing, acces-sories. We even build bikes from scratch to satisfycustomers’ specific requests. Organisations like theCounty Council, security companies and first aidmobile units may sometimes need bikes for aparticular task and we will sit down with them andwe will match-up the bikes to their specifications. We are the sole agents for KTM Bicycles and acces-sories in Ireland and we have appointed variouspremium dealers across the country which we aredeveloping at the moment.Prior to coming to my current location in the TownCentre Mall, I worked for four years in Mc Quaid’sbike shop on North Street here in Swords, but it’sall boarded up now.On the shop floor, we have approximately 120different models, but our full stock would expand toaround 500 bikes. It is very important to Richie thathe can match the customers’ price range andprovide quality bicycles at the keenest pricesanywhere.Christmas is no longer the bonanza it once wasbecause people are out cycling all year round, withno closed season. staff members and one part-time staff member, whoare involved in sales and service. In the 20 years since the business was set up, it hasexpanded. Initially the shop was located at unit 16and six years ago, Richie acquired unit 15, such wasthe demand at the time. The Bike to Work scheme has proven to be a tremen-dous boost for Richie and he feels that this hascontributed in a major way to the phenomenalincrease in bicycle sales. “It has enabled people to

buy a better quality bike than they would normallybuy. This has encouraged people to take up cyclingand enjoy a healthy lifestyle and the fact that theycan pay the reduced cost over the period of a year, has impacted hugely on sales. People that wereinvolved in cycling years ago are now being encour-aged to take it up again, due to the scheme,” he said.“We have a loyal customer base that we are veryproud of and ourcustomer service ismassively importantto us. When a poten-tial customer comesinto our shop, thefirst question we askis, what will the bikebe used for? We willthen suggest a bikethat is suitable forthis purpose andgive them a trial onthe bike. Thisprovides securityand peace of mindfor our customers, who know that theirrequirements areparamount to us.”“At Richie’s Bikes,we do everything toensure you leave with the bike best suited toyou. There are many important things toconsider when choosing a bike. We have a largeselection and have something to suit beginnersand pros alike.”Richie also spoke about the changing trend inbicycle sales, where sales of kids’ bikes wereonce huge, but now he could find they sell up to

50 adult bikes to one child’s bike. Much ofthis he puts down to the phenomenon ofx-box, mobile phones and the internet forchildren. “Some kids up to eight years oldare so much into technology that theycannot ride a bike,” he said.Fitting is very important in choosing asuitable bike. Richie explains, “The mainthing is that you feel perfectly comfort-able. Your limbs should be able to movewith ease. This will allow you to movefaster and with more ease. This allows youto concentrate on key things l ike

breathing, balance etc. Wealso can provide an expertbike fitting service, so if youare experiencing discomfortor want to ensure you areriding your bike in thecorrect position, book anappointment with our fittingexpert as you should neverfeel strained or uncomfort-able on your bike. If this isthe case, come speak withus at Richie’s Bike Store. We don’t let you go untilyou are 100 per centhappy,” he said.

Love it or hate it, it’salmost time to wavegoodbye to the breezysummer holidays andstart getting ready for anew school year. Gettingthe new school year offto a good start can influ-ence your children’s atti-tude, confidence, andperformance bothsocially and academi-cally. The transition fromAugust to Septembercan be difficult for bothchildren and parents.

Even children who areeager to return to classmust adjust to thegreater levels of activity, structure, and pressuresassociated with schoollife. The degree ofadjustment depends onthe child, but parentscan help their childrenmanage the increasedpace of life by planningahead, being realistic, and maintaining a posi-tive attitude. Here are afew suggestions to helpease the transition andget the school year off toa great start:

Make Sure They StayHealthy

It’s important that yourchildren stay healthyand well, especially aswe are moving into a

new season and theweather will becomechangeable. Pharmaciesall over theN o r t hCounty willhave al a r g eselectionof all thevitamins,as well asother prod-ucts andtips for ahealthierl i f e s t y l ethat youand yourfamily willneed tos t a yhealthy forthe rest ofthe school year. Be sureto ask your local phar-macist if you have anyconcerns or queries, and

they can advise youwhat your next step is.This is a particularly

good option if your childis stressed or feelinganxious about theweeks ahead.

School Uniforms AndSportswear

Some schools do havean “official” uniformstore, but they vary bothin terms of price, and asto how insistent they arethat parents shop there. These shops can be veryexpensive, and by nomeans do you have tobuy uniforms from thesestores. In fact, the NorthCounty has many excel-lent ‘back to school’clothing stores, withcompetitive prices andexcellent deals on offerfor you to choose from. You will also be able tofind any sportswear thatyou need, with the localstaff on hand to help

and give you plenty ofexpert advice.

Opticians

If your child wearsglasses or contactlenses, now is the timeto make sure that alltheir eye care needs aretaken care of. The NorthCounty has a vast arrayof qualified opticiansthat can help you in thisdepartment. If theyhaven’t had an eye testthis year, now is the timeto get them one to makesure their eyes are in topcondition for the newschool term. Many opti-cians will have seasonaldeals on as well, so keepan ‘eye’ out so you canavail of these.

In the UK theLabour Party strugglesto elect a new leader. The old sages caution ofthe dangers ofsupporting a radicalleader who, as one ofCorbyn’s opponents, accuse him of “offeringold solutions to old

Council May HaveTo Return RailLeviesFingal County Council will have to return levies itcollected from builders and property owners, ifthe proposed Metro North project does nothappen. The levies were collected from propertyowners along the route. The local authority, aswell as Dublin City Council continued to collectlevies on behalf of the the Rail ProcurementAgency (RPA) since 2007 in the form of anincreased development levy.So far, this has amounted to ¤14m beingcollected by Fingal County Council, which it isbelieved will have to be returned if the projectdoes not go ahead. The levy applies to buildingsand properties in a 1 km radius of the route, asthat area is deemed within walking distance ofthe metro stations. The recession intervened with the plan, whichwas put on ice in 2012, but both Fingal CountyCouncil and Dublin City Council continued tocollect the money as confidence grew that theproject would proceed when the economyimproved. In the meantime, Trinity College will have tostump up almost xxx250,000 in Metro Northlevies, as it plans to develop a new businessschool. This ambitious plan by the university hasbeen granted planning permission and will seethe demolition of a number of existing buildingsand the construction of a six floor building. Thepayment of the levy is conditional on MetroNorth going ahead.
