North Carolina State Optometric Society, Inc. EXECUTIVE OFFICE: 2403-G Wooten Boulevard, Wilson, NC 27893 MAILING ADDRESS: P. O. Box 1206, Wilson, NC 27894 TELEPHONE: 252-237-6197 FAX: 252-237-9233 E-MAIL: [email protected]WEB SITE: www.nceyes.org A MESSAGE FROM THE NCSOS PRESIDENT Fellow Optometrists, I would like to take this opportunity to wish each of you and your family a wonderful holiday season and a happy and prosperous new year. As we leave 2011 and head into 2012, I would like to inform you on matters that the Executive Council have been working on. In the Division of State Affairs, Trustee Alex Martin has recruited Sean Smolenyak and Laurel Gropper as chairpersons of a N.C. Optometry Legislative Day in Raleigh for the spring. In the Division of Administrative Affairs, Trustee Mary Ann Masters is gathering information from district presidents about the amount of education that is offered in each district. The Executive Council will listen to feedback from the districts and consider whether there needs to be a minimum or maximum amount of education offered in each district. In the Division of Education and Manpower, Trustee Jaime Casper, along with Trustee Chuck Sikes, did a fantastic job of inviting excellent speakers to provide high quality education to the attendees at our Fall Congress. They are already hard at work on the Spring Congress program. Thank you to Scott Athans for his leadership on the optometric assistants program. Under our Division of Professional Development, Alex Martin chaired a successful New Licensee Seminar at the Fall Congress. Vice President Steve Eyler is the chair of the NCSOS Strategic Planning Meeting that will be held in March in conjunction with the spring Executive Council meeting. The purpose is to identify and prioritize the goals of the society for the next 3-5 years. Trustee Matt Vizithum, who chairs the Division of Public Affairs, has resurrected our Third Party Committee and Heather Hickson has volunteered to be the chair. In the Division of Community Health, Trustee Jill Bryant continues her efforts to get support from other professions and consumer safety groups as we prepare to become more aggressive in trying to make a difference in the illegal sale of cosmetic contact lenses in beauty supply and novelty stores. I would also like to thank Roxanne Webb for “stepping up” and doing an outstanding job coordinating the Fall Congress in Asheville. I have received many compliments on how well the meeting went, both from O.D.’s as well as exhibitors. The Executive Director Transition Task Force is continuing to work during this challenging time of uncertainty. We are working to define the job description of the next Executive Director, and are giving careful consideration to any circumstances that may present. Last, but not least, please continue to keep Sue Gardner in your thoughts and prayers. Please send her a card or visit if you get the opportunity. Jerry Ellington, NCSOS President
