Norsepower in brief

• Norsepower has brought to market the first practical

auxiliary wind propulsion system

• The first rotor was tested on land during 2014

• The commercial testing at sea of the first rotor sail has

been completed on board Bore’s M/S Estraden

• The test results have confirmed the expected

performance of the rotor sail

Auxiliary Wind Propulsion• Depending on wind conditions up to 50% of service power is replaced with

wind propulsion

– Average savings depend on configuration and on the wind conditions of the

route / route area

• Norsepower Rotor Sail Solution is the first and only practical auxiliary wind

propulsion solution for large vessels

– Complementary to all other feasible fuel saving solutions

– Sea trials have been completed successfully

– More than 20 000 retro-fittable vessels

available: fits to Tankers, Bulkers, Ro-Ro,

Ropax, Ferries, etc.

Physics: Magnus Effect

• When wind meets a spinning object, a high and low pressure differential

is created, creating thrust at 90 degree angle to the wind

• Proven: Flettner (DE) and Savonius (FI) discovered the fundamentals in

1920s

• Norsepower has modernized the technology entirely by introducing

high tech materials and automated operation

Norsepower Rotor Sail Solution• Push-button controlled auxiliary wind propulsion

– Rotor sails of 3…5m in diameter and 18…30m in height

– Adjusts automatically to wind conditions

– Enables throttling back engines to reduce fuel costs without lowering the

cruising speed

– No special crew needed

• No off-hire required for installation

• Saving 5-20% of fuel costs -10 times more effective than a traditional sail

• Typical ROI for investment is around 20%

For equivalent forward thrust 10

times larger sail area is required

Installation during normal harbour stay • Installation took place in the end of November 2014

• The complete installation from the start to a rotating

rotor took only 7 hours and was made during normal

harbour stay - including mechanical, electrical and

automation systems

• 2 foundations were installed earlier

7 hours

Results from the sea trials

• Thrust production is in line with expectations

• Mechanical construction proved -system availability 99%

• Noise and vibrations are on low level

• The automation system works as intended

• The system is easy to operate and the crew is able to use it after a short training

• The rotor has a stabilizing effect on the roll motion of the vessel

• No recognizable effect on rudder angles or leeway (as expected)

Pilot project - thrust production results• Independent research body (VTT Technical Research

Centre of Finland) has measured forces produced by the

rotor in different conditions

• Thrust and thrust reverse tests have been performed by

rotating the rotor into different directions with different

speeds

• Results align with expectations

Pilot project – fuel saving results• Independent research body (NAPA Oy from Finland) has

measured fuel consumption and propulsion power

requirements in different conditions

• Regression analysis shows, that during the analysis period the

Rotor Sail has reduced the propulsion power consumption

significantly

• While using the Rotor Sail, the

net fuel consumption has

reduced in average 1.1 tons/day

NAPA Performance validation

Fuel saving results – cross wind scatter

• Traditionally crosswind

increases fuel

consumption

• The analysis by NAPA

has proven, that with

Norsepower Rotor Sail

the cross wind

decreases fuel

consumption

Verified savings of M/V Estraden with

Norsepower Rotor Sail• Average net savings (with one rotor): 2,6%

• Payback period (MGO, 500 USD/t): 5 years

“We are proud to be the first shipowner to install the Norsepower Rotor Sail, and

demonstrate that wind propulsion technology has verifiable 5% fuel savings on a yearly

basis, can be retrofitted without any off-hire costs, and is extremely easy to use in

practice.”, Jörgen Mansnerus, Vice President, Bore.

Norsepower for ferries• First practical, tested and class-approved auxiliary wind propulsion

system on the market

• Available for new builds and for a retro-fitting without off-hire costs

• Fuel savings and emissions reduction potential are up to 10% with

typical ferry configurations

– Does not disturb convenience on board

• On favourable routes ROI is more than 20% per year

• The only fuel savings technology on the market, which is clearly

visible for everybody

Example of potential installation
