NationalNightOut,alsoknownas"America'sNightOutAgainstCrime", was the creation of theNational Association ofTownWatchin1984.Thiseffortisusedtopromoteinvolvementincrimepreventionactivities,createpolice-communitypartnerships,andfosterneighborhoodcamaraderie.Thisyear,over37millionAmericansacross15,000 communities took part inNationalNightOut programs.NormandyForestwasoneofthose15,000communities. NationalNightOutisobservedinTexasonthefirstTuesdayofOctober.So,onOctober1,NormandyForestresidentswereinvitedtotheneighborhoodparktonotonlygatherasacommunity,buttomeeteachotherandthoselocalfirefighters,paramedics,andpoliceofficerswhokeepussafeeveryday.Everyoneenjoyedfood,games,andprizes.Thisonenightismeanttobeareminderthatitiseveryone'sresponsibilitytokeepourcommunitysafe.Meetyourneighbors,lightyourporchesatnight,andreportsuspiciousactivity.Ifyouhavesafetyconcernsorideasonhowtomakeourneighborhoodasaferplacetolive, letyourHOABoardknowbyemailingyourthoughtstoChaparralManagement.
With that inmind it’s not too soon tostart thinkingaboutsafetywhilewe’reout.Notlongagomostcriminalactivityrevolvedaroundhomesandvehiclesbeingbrokenintowith criminals stealing your property.Thistypeofcrimestilltakesplace,butwiththeincreasingnumberofsecuritysystemsbeingutilizedithasbecomealottoughertocommitabreakinwithoutbeingcaught.
Criminals are a crafty bunch and spendmostoftheir“offtheclock”timedevisingnewwaystotakeadvantageoftheinnocent.Locallawenforcementisseeinganewtrendwhichinvolvesthecriminalelementstalkinglocalbusiness establishments such as large retailand grocery stores,malls and strip centerswithmultiplebusinesseslookingforinnocentvictims.Theylookforareasthatareverybusywithpedestriantrafficwheretheymightbeabletograbyourpropertyandrunwithoutbeingnoticedbyanyoneotherthanyou.Bythetimeyougethelptheyhavedisappearedintothinairitseems.Thebadguyscanbeonfootorinavehicleandittakesplacebothnightandday.Wehavebeenadvisedofseveralincidentswhereavehiclewilldrivethroughaparkinglotuntiltheynoticesomeonethatisnotpayingattentionanddriveupbehindthem,asuspectwillthenleanoutawindowandgrabapurseorpropertyandfleewithouteverexitingthevehicle.Insidestores,criminalsfollowapersonandwhentheyaren’tlooking,walkupandstealpropertywithout you even knowing.There aremanyways thatcriminalstakeadvantageofyouinthesetypesofsettingsbut,justlikeprotectingyourhomesandautostherearewaysthatyoucanjustabouteliminatethechanceofyouoryourlovedonesbecomingavictiminoneofthesesituations.
Themost important thing you need to remember is“PAYATTENTIONTOYOURSURROUNDINGS”!!It’ssimplebutyouwouldbesurprisedatthepeoplethatgetwrappedupinthemomentandforgettowatchwhat’sgoingonaroundthem.Thesetypesofcriminalactsrelyontheelementofsurprise.Iftheyseethatyouarewatching
1. If possible don’t shop alone. Criminals look forunsuspecting individuals that have their hands full ofgroceriesorotheritemsandaren’tpayingattention.Ifyou’rebyyourselfandhaveyourhand’sfull,it’shardtopaycloseattentiontoyoursurroundings.
