A few months back, a friend of mine signed me up for the Run for the Toad, a 25 km trail race. At the time I remember thinking, now I’ve got to train, so I did!

Let me give you a little background on The Toad it is a 25 km and 50 km trail race just up the road in Paris, Ontario at the Pinehurst Conservation Area. Last year, as well as this year, it is the host of the 50 km Canadian Championship.

The race itself was started back in 2002 and has become one

of, if not the premier event in the country for trail runners! The course is a 12.5 km loop through finely manicured trails,

which are nice and wide, with constant hills of varying sizes and shapes, a pristine view over a meadow in one section, a small segment of road and a little bit of single track as well. All of this is packaged nicely into 12.5 kilometres of fun. Oh, I forgot to mention the steep, intimidating hill in the last kilometre (just to make you earn it). I found all of this out mid September when

Monica and I went for a run on the course. It was a very warm, sunny day so we took our time and enjoyed what Pinehurst offered.

It was a funny thing that day, we forgot our trail map and we happened upon a lady by the main parking area. Monica asked her if she knew any information about the Run for the Toad course. Well it was just our luck that the lady we had come across was Peggy, one half of the dynamic duo that organizes the race! Her husband, George, was busy talking to a fellow runner. I noticed duct tape around George’s hand and wondered why. The gentleman talking to George was heading out for a loop of the trail course and said he would gladly show us the trail, so off we went! At around 9 km in, there was George raking the trail and it all made sense... the tape on the hand... he was literally raking 12.5 km of trail. He wanted to make sure everything was perfect for the runners. I was blown away by the dedication of George and Peggy for their event. We finished up our run and were stretching when the couple returned, rake in hand. I think George’s first question was, “What did you think of the trail?” He had a glint in his eye like a proud papa. Monica and I said it was wonderful and we proceeded to have an amazing conversation!

George and Peggy just make you feel good when you talk with them. It kind of felt like they were old friends we had not seen in a while. The conversation flowed easily! The energy was ever present; it was easy to see the passion they carried for the Run for the Toad. I asked George when and why he and Peggy started the race. With the excitement of a four year old, the words spilled out as quick as I could take them in. He was down

at the JFK 50 mile race a number of years ago and he thought that it would be great to have a race up this way. He loved how the race was organized, the friendliness of the event, and the running community at large. So he and Peggy started planning and in 2002 the first Run for the Toad took place with just over 350 participants. Every year the run grew a little more, soon top quality runners from the U.S. and Canada were coming to the race adding to its profile. As George told the story his excitement grew, by the end of it I couldn’t wait to run the race.

I understand why the race just keeps growing; George and Peggy are infectious people and you want to help them. You can see clearly that their goal is to get folks out on the trails and to encourage them to be part of the friendly trail running community.

When race day finally arrived I went around and chatted with a number of volunteers and each said the same thing, they came to help George and Peggy. Everyone loves them for who they are; people meet them and want to lend a hand. They have an easygoing nature and they are always so excited to see you.

As for the race, it is by far one of the best-organized races I have ever attended. I have been to a few, big and small! From tent city which houses the dining area, a stage with music and the exhibits, to the children’s tent, there was something for everyone. The course is clearly marked with volunteers everywhere, cheering you on and helping at aid stations. The whole crew was smiling and helping anyway they could. I have got to tell you it was a privilege to participate in such a prestigious event!

Sometimes folks come to Norfolk and to their surprise, they find what a hidden gem we have here. Such was the case when I sat down last month at

the opening ceremonies of the Norfolk County Fair and was introduced to Karen Furneaux, a 3-Time Olympian kayaker, 2-Time World Champion kayaker and winner of over 50 World Cup Medals! Karen is a 2-time Finalist for Canada’s Female Athlete of the Year, 4-Time winner of Nova Scotia Female Athlete of the Year and has been honoured with the Queen Elizabeth Golden Jubilee Medal as well as the Charles Yatzman Award for Sports Person of the Americas.

So what was Karen doing in our neck of the woods you ask? Well Canadian Tire Simcoe owner, Mary Taylor, met Karen at a golf tournament recently on the East Coast. The two hit it off and Mary invited her up to Norfolk for some speaking engagements at local schools where she spoke with the children about following their dreams and never giving up on their pursuits.

Before her speaking engagements, she attended Young Canada Day at the fair and was in awe of the school competition at the grandstand taking in the full morning of events. She

admired the enthusiasm and camaraderie of the students and the variety of different athletic challenges on display.

She said that they have nothing like this back home!Karen enjoyed her visit to Norfolk and appreciated the

hospitality from the community, Mary and Mary’s family. Thanks Karen for coming to Norfolk and inspiring our youth to new heights and sharing your story with us!

PILEATED WOODPECKER

~ By George Pond

DISCOVERING BIRDSof NORFOLk with George & Vic

David karnes, a friend of Vic Gibbons and an avid photographer found this

Pileated Woodpecker at a nest hole in one of Norfolk’s large woodlots. He got a great photograph of this crow sized bird, the largest woodpecker found in North America, and kindly allowed Vic to use it as a model for this stunning painting. Vic has certainly captured the awesome size of these magnificent birds.

Pileated Woodpeckers prefer dense, mature forests. They are uncommon, year round residents of Norfolk County. They can be found in Backus Woods, the St. William’s forest and most of the larger forests of western Norfolk. Their loud resonant territorial drumming sound echoes throughout the woods, but the birds are only occasionally seen. They eat ants and beetles that live in dead and dying trees. When walking in the woods look for the large rectangular or oval holes that they drill in search of food or building a nest cavity. The chips at the tree base are often as big as a fist. A pair nest in the dense Cedar Street swamp, part of the Simcoe Waterworks property and we have recorded them on several Woodhouse Christmas bird counts.

Pileated Woodpeckers can be found throughout eastern Canada and the U.S. right to the tip of Florida. They are more common in the southeast than here in Norfolk. I hope that you get to see one soon.

As the weather starts to turn cold it's important to remember that that's

no excuse for not keeping yourself in shape over the winter months! Keeping active either at a local gym, mall walking, senior support exercise programs or even continuing to exercise outside on nice days are all great options.

I'll admit that getting dressed and prepared for the outside on ccccold winter days can be a pain, however there are lots of new clothing options that are fairly light yet very warm. New materials that are breathable yet retain heat are available at many of the sporting good/running shops around Norfolk county. Layering is very important, as this allows one to unzip or shed a layer if needed.

I ride my bike throughout the entire winter, and have two to three layers on my legs and up to three to four layers on top. Material that wicks sweat away from the skin keeps you warm and an outer layer

to prevent wind chill is very important. Footwear can also be a challenge, however there are lots of options in water resistant shoes or sprays/covers one can utilize.

So whether you enjoy walking, running, cycling or inside activities remember to dress for it and most of all keep it consistent and enjoy! PS - I haven't started on winter sports yet ;)

This is a question we hear daily during the spring, summer and, especially, the fall. Unfortunately, many homeowners do not see any adverse changes

occurring in their trees until they look dead, or nearly so. The discolouration and dropping of evergreen needles is a

natural phenomenon, and the main cause of needle loss in the wild. Evergreen needles do not survive for a lengthy period, and in fact usually have a life span of only five to seven years on healthy trees. The needles first start to die in the central and lower part of the tree, and this change progresses upward over time.

Now if there is a sudden fall of a very large number of brown needles and leaves, this signals to us that there is something drastically wrong!

This can happen as early as a year or two after a tree is planted. This is especially true in eastern Norfolk County where heavy clay soils predominate. Spruce trees, for example, do not grow well on clay soils.

You will also see spruce trees naturally lose needles as they get older. Age is an important factor here in causing needle loss and branch death, but so are diseases and pests. In landscape plantings of coniferous evergreen trees, however, pests and disease are the major cause of needle loss and dying branches.

Here are some of the more common problems, apart from natural aging that afflict spruce trees, the probable causes and ways of treating the problem. Unfortunately, these majestic trees, the most popular evergreen planted on our residential properties, incur many other pest and disease problems not dealt with here.Symptom: Rusty brown needles that eventually fall.Likely causes: 1. Internal fungus disease (called Cytospora or white blister canker). This creates cracks in the bark causing resin to drip and leave grey-white dripping streaks on the bark. The fungus also causes open wounds or blisters on tops of branches. These wounds can be greyish white or greyish blue in colour, eventually turning brown and black.

2. Feeding by spider mites which leave fine, poorly formed webs in the needles, especially near the ends of the twigs.Best treatments: 1. Properly aerate and fertilize tree out to a distance of half its height in all directions, where possible.

2. Pressure wash thoroughly once a month with water only, all needles and branches as high as possible on the tree. Water pressure dislodges spider mites.

Symptom: Chewed up ends of twigs in June. Likely cause: Spruce bud worms which develop in the needle cluster that arises from a bud.Best treatment: Spray the biological pesticide, Btk (eg. Dipel), onto the entire tree when feeding is first noticed in early spring, to kill the young caterpillars.

Symptom: Black sooty mould covering twigs and needles. Likely causes: 1. Spruce bud scales, ball-shaped insects, initially light brown in colour but eventually turning black. Often two to five scale balls cluster in one location on the twig; honey dew excretions from scales become infected with sooty mould.

2. An overhanging shade tree such as oak, maple or elm may have heavily infested leaves with aphids whose honey dew secretions become infected with sooty mould.Best treatment: 1. Pressure wash tree using water only to dislodge young scales (called nymphs) in May and early June while they are in the crawling stage. Scale nymphs fall to the ground where they cease to be a threat to the tree.

2. Spray shade tree in early spring with insecticidal soap to control aphids. The problems of other coniferous evergreens such as pines, firs, cedars and junipers can usually be treated with correct diagnosis, though some diseases are lethal.

In this week’s column we will consider two questions. First, what is your most valuable asset?

Second, in the event of loss or damage, do you have insurance on your most valuable asset? While you reflect on that I’ll share a specific example.

I was the only source of income for my [then] young family while we were living in a house that was mortgaged. My advisor helped me to realize that in the event of my death, my grieving widow would have to sell the house, rent an apartment, and return to work, while having sole responsibility for raising our three young sons. To avoid that very unpleasant scenario, I bought life insurance.

This example shows that our ability to earn an income is our most valuable asset. Buying life insurance seems a sensible way to protect our families from loss of income in the event that we should die. However, workers are eight times more likely to be disabled, rather than die, during their working careers.

Despite having knowledge and awareness about this issue, very few

people in the labour force buy adequate disability insurance. In the example described above, it would have been worse, financially, for my family if I had become disabled rather than died, through the added burden of caring for a disabled husband plus the financial costs of my disability.

Considering the following points may help you to think about how your ability to work, earn an income and your financial future could be affected by a sudden illness or disability.

• If you become disabled, your dependents will still need financial support.

• From your lender’s perspective, if you aren’t working, will they want to loan you money?

• Even if it is possible for your spouse to earn extra income (by working extra hours for example) many spouses instead choose to reduce the amount of time at work to be able to help their partner.

• The major forms of government disability benefits are: Employment Insurance, Workers’ Compensation and the Canada/Quebec Pension Plan. All three have eligibility and benefit limitations.

• Even when people have disability insurance through an employer, a review of the coverage may show that their coverage is inadequate, or identify potential benefit limitations.

If any of the above items is a concern, you may have a need for individual disability insurance protection. While no one plans to become disabled, you can be prepared with an income replacement plan. We can help you determine the disability insurance product that best suits your needs from the many that are offered through most insurance companies.

Sleep Apnea

How do you get tested if you suspect you have sleep apnea?

If you feel you could have sleep apnea the first step is to speak to your family doctor. It is important to discuss with your doctor why you feel you have sleep apnea or at risk for sleep apnea. Your family doctor can then refer to you a sleep physician and sleep laboratory.

The sleep laboratory will schedule you for a polysomnogram, otherwise known as a sleep study. A sleep study is performed during the night at the sleep lab. A sleep technician will monitor you while you sleep and the following items are monitored; eye movement, limb movement, heart waves, brain wave, airflow, snoring, chest & abdominal movement (detecting breathing efforts) and oxygen levels (via a finger probe).

After you have an initial sleep study the sleep physician and sleep lab technicians will review the results and the physician will diagnose you with sleep apnea if the results indicate you have it. If the results of your sleep study indicate that you have sleep apnea, you will be asked to come back for a second sleep study. The second sleep study is sometimes referred to as a CPAP study or a titration study and this sleep study is used to determine CPAP setting required for each individual person. After your second sleep study, the sleep physician will issue you a prescription for CPAP therapy.

Once the sleep physician has reviewed your results and given you a prescription for CPAP therapy, you will then need to visit a registered CPAP vendor. Your sleep physician should provide you with a list of registered CPAP vendors in your area. It is

important to know that who you choose to go to for your CPAP equipment is 100% your choice.

A question that I often get asked when I tell someone about the process of visiting a sleep lab is what will it cost me? The answer to this is, seeing a sleep physician and going for sleep studies is funded under the Ministry of Health, as long as you have a valid health card. The CPAP equipment is partially funded by the ministry of health as well and usually any costs not covered will be covered by health benefits (including workplace benefits, Social Assistance and/or Native Affairs).

Seniors and

The proportion of seniors in the Canadian population is expected to double by 2025. More and more seniors plan to stay young at heart—and

body and soul! Staying healthy is essential to keeping your independence and still enjoying the things you love, whether it’s taking long road trips to visit your grandchildren or cruising the oceans blue.

Today’s seniors are dispelling old stereotypes. Many look better, feel better, and are embracing a whole new age of possibilities. Along with eating right, keeping active, and preventing injuries, getting regular check-ups and screenings is key to healthy aging. As well, it’s important to know what diseases run in your family, so you can take steps to prevent these illnesses.

Bone Up on a Big ProblemOsteoporosis is a disease that causes bones to gradually

thin and weaken. Fortunately, there are many ways to fend off osteoporosis. A regular program of weight bearing exercises such as walking or step aerobics can help strengthen your bones. Bone also needs calcium to replenish itself, so make sure you’re getting enough either through your diet or supplements.

Bladder Control Problems— IncontinenceUrinary incontinence (UI) is a bladder control problem that

causes involuntary loss of urine. If you sometimes leak when you laugh or cough, you’re not alone. Just like many parts of our body, our pelvic floor muscles become weaker with age.

In some cases, these lifestyle changes may be enough to control UI:

Do Kegel exercises. These involve clenching and unclenching your pelvic floor muscles. Next time you urinate, stop the flow and release it again.

Both men and women can practice Kegels anywhere— sitting, standing or lying down.

Stick to a regular urination schedule. Timed urination keeps the bladder empty—and empty bladders can’t leak. Try starting with a timed urination every one to two hours even if you don’t feel like you have to go. It may take a little while to figure out the schedule that’s right for you.

Cut back on the caffeine. Caffeine-rich beverages like coffee, tea and colas have a diuretic effect. Since your body does need fluids, try switching to water instead.

Fortunately there are a variety of UI products available from thin, super absorbent pads, to adult diapers and bed pads. Your FHCP pharmacist can discreetly guide you to the right choices.

Travelling TipsAge should never get in the way of seeing the world.

However, many seniors have special concerns such as chronic illnesses or mobility issues, and should take extra precautions before heading off on a long trip. Here are some tips:

Get a complete medical check-up. This is especially important if you have any chronic health problems, such as heart disease, or have recently undergone surgery. As well, make sure you get any vaccinations that are required for your destination.

Discuss any mobility issues with your travel agent. Make sure you will be able to physically reach the specific sites you plan to visit.

Pack your medications carefully. All prescription and over-the-counter medications should be placed in a one quart zip-lock freezer bag, including copies of any prescriptions and/or physician statements in the hand-carry bag. If the medication you take regularly requires syringes, (e.g. insulin) make sure you take enough syringes to last the trip. Also keep in mind that crossing multiple time zones can change the times you take your medications. It’s a good idea to talk to your FHCP pharmacist about your travel needs prior to going away.

It can be used in so many places, so let’s start with the bed. For many years it has been used to support the head. Then as we age an extra pillow is often used for elevating our head to help our breathing. It is also used to support our back and relieve the ache and strain that is so uncomfortable. Sometimes we also put it under our knees. And then, there is that afternoon television program. The pillow is put under our head, under our upper arms and knees too. The pillows give so much comfort that some of the program is often missed!

There are other uses and the shape and size of the pillow is adapted for them. For instance when riding in a motor vehicle, a thick pillow under the feet will absorb the vibrations, take the strain off the hips and make the ride so much more relaxing. Now, getting a pillow dirty is often the first reaction to this suggestion!! But, use an old pillow and pillowcase that is easy to change and wash! Soon, the comfort that it brings will make the condition of the pillow not matter at all! Do try it! Also on a longer ride, a pillow under your elbow can make the trip more relaxed. Another way the pillow can help our aging lifestyle is putting our feet up on a pillow when having our morning tea or coffee and working on the

daily crossword puzzle. It really eases the strain off the hips. A ‘kitchen pillow’ is a good idea!

Now, the pillow has more shapes than the one that is on your bed. There is the one that wraps around the back of the neck, the one that is rolled lengthwise for a backrest and the large firm pillow that is put under our knees. And to put our feet up, many of us take a well filled pillow, roll it from end to end and put a tie near each end; this shape makes a great support for the hips when having our morning tea or coffee and working on the daily crossword puzzle!

Yes, the power of the pillow is very versatile for us seniors!!

And, now for a review of some Canadian geography! Name the provinces from British Columbia to Newfoundland, the five great lakes plus one, and the three territories.

And, how did you do? Did you remember Lake St. Clair and the Northwest Territories, the Yukon

and Nunavut??

The title may sound silly and it is, but do read on. Our senior years bring changes in many ways and a very significant change is how we make ourselves comfortable. And, so comes the power or influence of the pillow and how it is used to support our body parts.

When I present at various activities I am asked quite often whether panfish, perch in particular, will take “plastic baits”. The

answer is simple... most definitely.I was in a tackle shop in October and a woman came into

the store and said to a sales person, “It’s my dad’s birthday and I want to buy him some plastic baits for perch fishing.” To which the sales person responded, “I’m sorry but perch don’t bite plastic baits.” I wanted to interject but I decided not to.

There is lots of time in the fall where it is impossible to find minnows for purchase. Does that mean you have to stay home rather than enjoy time on the water perch fishing? A feeble excuse at best. In today’s world there are lots of alternatives to live bait.

I have been very successful using artificial soft baits for perch, whether spring, fall or winter. Some of the best minnow baits I use successfully are: Berkley PowerBait Minnow in the 2” and 3” sizes; Berkley Gulp! Alive! Minnow; and Berkley Gulp! Minnow. All panfish including perch feed on worms. Berkley makes different worms but my main go to is the Gulp! Mini Earthworm and the Gulp! Pinched Crawler. All fish eat insects and I like the Berkley Gulp! Maggot, Gulp! Hellgrammite and the Gulp! Alive! Waxies.

Artificial baits today are of many colours, contain scent, don’t contain scent, are lively, and imitate a variety of aquatic animals whether it is worms, insects, or fish.

I don’t care which species of fish you angle for there is an artificial bait that will successfully allow you to catch it. Professional bass tournaments do not allow you to use live bait. Even most of the walleye tournaments are restricting the use of live bait.

Fall fishing for migrating rainbow trout, or more commonly called steelhead, is happening right now. In Ontario there is a growing number of anglers using fly rods and swinging various fly patterns. But one of the latest crazes happening over the past several years is the use of

plastic beads. Walk into any tackle shop and look at all the colours and sizes on display. It appears you may have walked into a craft shop instead of a fishing shop. There are several manufacturers producing these baits.

The advantage of beads is two-fold. The weight of the bead allows the bait to be presented closer to the bottom and the translucency of the bead imitates the natural translucency of a real salmon or trout egg. But most importantly, many anglers are no longer killing a fish just for the sake of obtaining natural eggs of a trout or salmon. Anglers can now make a choice to release that female carrying eggs if they don’t need them for just taking eggs. I know many good steelhead anglers who now do not keep a trout or salmon for their eggs as they are just effective using beads and yarn eggs.

There is another alternative to real eggs and that is the Bio D Egg. This artificial egg requires you to add water to the package and create eggs that look and feel like natural trout eggs. By adding some scent they can even smell like the real thing. These eggs do not have to be refrigerated and can last several years. Over the years how many of us have left our jar of eggs in our vest or in the vehicle only to discover them weeks later due to their offensive odour?

Don’t forget you can add an attractant to any of your artificial baits whether hard baits or soft baits. The Berkley Gulp! Alive! Attractant is one of the best scent additives I have used. Available in many scents so there is one for the application you intend. I find the attractiveness to scents is the fish actually will hold onto the bait just a little longer allowing you to get a proper hook set before the fish may spit the bait out.

There are so many alternatives to live bait available today you don’t have to be discouraged if your local bait shop is closed or sold out. It is all about confidence so start experimenting with bait alternatives throughout your fishing season. If anyone ever says to you perch don’t bite plastic baits you can answer, “Sure they do!”

October has begun and we have already been back to school for a month. It’s that time of year again and the sports season has begun. Lots of students

have been taking a break from training and enjoying their summer vacation, but it’s time to start getting back to practicing.

When you are in elementary school there aren’t a lot of sports available for students, but in high school it’s a whole new world with all the sports teams. Weather its tennis, football or even swimming, there’s a sport for everyone. In grade 9 the teachers are always encouraging you to join teams. Lots of students don’t because they are nervous, but in reality it’s a great way of making new friends and doing something you love. I can speak from experience that it can be scary trying out for a sport when you are only in grade 9, but after a few practices you will feel more comfortable. In fact, it wasn’t until grade 10 that I finally decided to join a sports team at school. After joining I realized how good it felt to be part of a team and I met some new friends. It is okay if you’re nervous like I was, but you should still try out. Even if you don’t make it this time there’s always next year!

You shouldn’t stop at just one sport; there are different sports all year long. It even gives you a chance to try a new sport that you have never tried before. You might even end up loving something you have never done before. For example, I have never been on a cross-country team but I love to go running. So I decided to join the team and made some new friends that share the same interests as I do. At some schools they only allow you to be on one sports team at one time so you may have to choose sports in different seasons, but at least you are still getting out and participating.

Now that school has started it’s time to get practicing again if you hadn’t already done so on your own. Some sports may require you to practice every day of the week and others might only be once or twice a week. It is very important that you show up to these practices. When you skip practice, you’re letting your coaches and your team down. Practices are made so that the coaches can help improve the participant’s skills. Coaches can then match the person to a certain position based on their strengths. When you are on a team it is important to stay active and healthy so that you can play your best.

Practices are also a great time for team bonding. If everyone on the team can’t get along you don’t have a very good chance of succeeding. Team building allows you to get to know everyone and collaborate with new teammates. Don’t forget about communication skills. During games it’s important to communicate so that players can work with their teammates in order to win. This can be as simple as cheering someone on or calling “mine” when the ball is coming to you. When your team works together you play more efficiently and have a better chance of winning.

On your team there will always be the kids who are the star players and everything just comes naturally to them, but we have to keep in mind that they have been playing the sport for years and have had lots of practice. Everybody knows the quote, “Practice makes perfect”. Practice may not make perfect for everybody, but it definitely makes improvement. With some hard work and dedication, you can work your way up to playing as good as the other kids on the team.

By showing some dedication, working hard and lots of practice everyone can find something they’re good at. So throw away the nervous energy and go for it!
