“Loaded Guns Don’t

Belong In Classrooms.”

The L.A. City Council last week unani-

mously approved a resolution opposing a

Assembly Bill 202.

The bill, from Assemblymember Tim

Sargsyan-Putin Meeting Produces Little News,

Seen As Crucial For Further Armenian-Russian Ties

The presidents of Armenia and Russia,

Serzh Sargsyan and Vladimir Putin, met

in Moscow on Tuesday for what many ex-

perts said were crucial talks between the

two allies.

The meeting had been expected to dis-

cuss a wide range of issues. But no state-

ments were issued after what was a closed-

door discussion.

The two leaders made comments for the

press only before going into talks that re-

portedly lasted for about an hour.

Sargsyan, who won reelection in a dis-

puted ballot last month, said it was natu-

/#(%3+/%)'0%"+%0#=$%)'!%./!"%3+/$'21%"/'7%"+%Russia, a country that is an ally of Armenia,

and Putin, for his part, again congratulated

the Armenian leader on his “convincing”

victory.

Remarkably, however, Sargsyan thanked

Putin for “good progress in the military

sphere” since their last meeting. What ex-

actly he meant is not clear yet. The last time

Sargsyan and Putin met was on the side-

lines of a summit of the Collective Security

Treaty Organization (CSTO) in Moscow

last December and during that gathering

the Armenian leader stated that CSTO-

member countries should not be arming re-

gional countries that openly threaten CSTO

members with a war.

Russia is known to have supplied new

types of weapons to Azerbaijan, which is

(approx. $0.24), per cubic meters, instead

of the regular price of 132 drams (approx.

$0.32), and they are supplied an annual

amount of 300 cubic meters at this price.

provided to Armenia’s socially disadvan-

taged classes will increase in 2013, but he

Yerevan Stone-Bronze Age Settlement

On Friday, April 12 Mr. Vladimir Tsha-

gharyan, director of Yerevan’s Shengavit

the Shengavit preserve at the Armenian

Library and Museum of America (ALMA)

at 7:30 PM in Watertown, MA. The site,

across Yerevan Lake from the United States

Embassy, dates to the 4th millennium BCE

(3,000 – 4.000 years BCE) and contains re-

mains of dwellings, stone and metal im-

plements, bones of domesticated animals,

and remnants of grains grown nearby. On

the site also are tombs of Shengavit’s early

inhabitants. It is believed that the site was

occupied for a duration of 1,500 – 2,000

years. Issues being studied include evolu-

tion from tribal societies to more complex

social structures, and Shengavit’s role in

the development of the regional culture

and the evolution of human society in the

Caucasus and the Middle East. On the site

is a small but neatly organized museum

presenting some of the artifacts recovered

from excavations.

The “Shengavit” or “Kura-Arax” culture

was established in the Ararat Valley with

connections as far away as western Anato-

lia, the northern Caucasus, southern Rus-

sia, and northern Mesopotamia. The earli-

est excavations were performed in 1936 by

Joseph Orbelli (1887 – 1961) - an expert on

the history of the southern Caucasus, the

(1943–47). Along with Orbelli a bright

pated in studying the site but was declared

Tamanian studied the site. In 1967 Sardar-

yan published his English language study,

“Primitive Society in Armenia”. There are

few other studies of this site in the English

language. The site is a 10-15 minute taxi

drive from the center of Yerevan.

Mr. Tshagharyan will visit here at the

from Pennsylvania and head of Widener

University’s anthropology department. Dr.

Rothman has spent three seasons excavat-

on the subject. Joining the speakers will be

Dr. Susan Pattie, anthropologist and direc-

tor of ALMA, who will moderate the dis-

cussion. Tshagharyan will speak in Arme-

nian with all his comments translated into

English.

This event is part of CYSCA’s partici-

pation in the Cambridge Science Festival.

U.S. Ambassador: Azerbaijani Law Enforcement Violates

Rights Of Detained Activists

Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Am-

bassador to Azerbaijan Richard Morning-

star made a statement in connection with

the last protest in Baku, noting that the law

enforcement bodies of Azerbaijan had vio-

lated the rights of the detained activists.

According to the Azerbaijani news

agency “APA”, in the statement of the U.S.

Ambassador was expressed the attitude

towards the last protest held on March 10

in Baku: “I have seen media reports that

authorities arrested several youth activists

in the days preceding the March 10 public

cy “Turan”, the three activists of “NIDA”

who were arrested on the eve of the rally of

March 10 are pressed. Thus, parents of the

arrested refused to have the service of the

independent legal lawyers. Lawyer Asabali

Mustafayev does not exclude that this was

due to the pressure of the investigation.

“Turan” reminds that activists of “NIDA”

Bakhtiyar Guliyev, Shaheen Novruzlu and

Mamed Azizov were arrested on the even-

ing of 7 March and MNS accused them of

possessing “Molotov cocktails” and drugs.

On March 9, these activists were put un-

der arrest for 3 months. On March 9 at the

evening video footage of interrogations of

the arrested activists were shown on the

Public Television of Azerbaijan. They con-

fessed saying that members of the organi-

zation were going to show a “violent resist-

ance to the police.”

A suicide bombing during a buzkashi

match in northern Afghanistan has killed

at least seven people.

US, UK and France training Syrian rebels in Jordan

Foreign instructors are training Syrian

rebels in modern warfare in Jordan, sug-

gest media reports from Europe. Sources

claim the trainees will be the security force
