à Rights sold in: France (Grasset), Germany (Blessing Verlag), Poland (Czarne), Hungary (Cser Kiado).

à A journey of 104 kilometers on a two-way street, caught between the Ionian Sea and the Aspromonte slopes.

à A journey in history and psychogeography, deciphering the minds of the affiliates of the ‘ndrangheta (the most powerful organized crime group based in Italy) is its end point.

A journey through the most powerful mafia-type organized crime group at a global level.

From the homicide of the very powerful CEO of the Italian State Railways, to the maxi laundering operations in Hong Kong; from the privileged relations with Colombian narcos to the brutal assassination of the journalist Jàn Kuciak, in Slovakia; from the biggest ecstasy shipment of all times hidden in Melbourne port, to the wars that are bringing bloodsheds to Montréal and Toronto: “driving on Route 106 means to go back to the source of the global phenomenon of the 'ndrangheta”.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Antonio Talia is journalist who worked with foreign affairs. He worked for seven years in Beijing as a news correspondent for an Italian press agency: during this period he worked on different stories related to crime and on the international proliferation of the 'ndrangheta.

Igor Kostine TCHERNOBYL

(Chernobyl) Les Arènes, November 2019, 340 pages

à Rights sold: 7 licenses for the previous edition, including Poland (Albatros), Estonia (Sinisukk).

à Public interest in this historic event following the success of the eponymous TV series (HB0, 2019). A book filled with around 100 rare shots taken by a witness at the heart of the tragedy, the only photographer to have access to the power station from the day after the explosion.

A stunning collection of the photos and documents behind the eponymous series

A reporter’s confessions. Nicknamed the “man of legend” by the Washington Post, Igor Kostin is an important eyewitness of the Chernobyl disaster.

On 26 April 1986, just a few hours after the explosion, he flew over the power station. The radiation was so strong that his film turned black. Only one photograph was saved, which went on to be seen around the world. Surprised by both the scale of the disaster and the authorities’ silence, Igor Kostin decided to stay and live among the 800,000 liquidators who came on to the accident site.

While himself being exposed to radiation, he spent 20 years photographing the power station and the Exclusion Zone surrounding it. He saw the evacuation of villages, the despair and courage of local people, the construction of the sarcophagus, men moving radioactive bricks with their bare hands, machine cemeteries, and contaminated gardens and orchards, now a wilderness devoid of human life. Kostin’s story is entwined with Chernobyl’s story.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Igor Kostin, a Ukrainian photographer born in 1939, was the first photographer on site at the Chernobyl disaster on 26 April 1986. His photographs have been published by the world’s biggest newspapers and honoured in numerous prizes, including twice at the World Press Photo competition.

Denis Demonpion HOUELLEBECQ LA BIOGRAPHIE

(Houellebecq. The Biography) Buchet Chastel, October 2019, 320 pages

à Rights sold in: Poland (Wydawnictwo Agora), Czech Republic (Euromedia / Odeon).

Based on some hundred documents and eyewitness accounts, the most recent of which have never been published before, the author redefines the border between Houellebecq’s work, the real person, and his public persona, gradually dissipating the diabolical fog shrouding this icon of postmodern literature.

He has been described as a racist, eugencist, antifeminist, Islamo-phobic fascist… But who really is Michel Houellebecq? In 2005, Libella/Maren Sell published Denis Demonpion “Unauthorized Houellebecq,” the first in-depth biography of the scandalous writer. Thanks to a meticulous and well-documented investigation into one of the most important contemporary French literary phenomena, Demonpion was able to reveal several important details about Houellebecq’s life, as well as pointing out some concealed facts, like his subject’s real last name and date of birth, and where he went to school.

Now Demonpion has picked up the investigation where he left off, presenting the period from 2005 to 2019. He recounts Houellebecq’s adventures in moviemaking, for example, and provides some clarification to the first version.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Denis Demonpion was born in 1954. As a journalist, he has practiced his profession at Paris-Match, AFP, Libération and Le Point. He now works at L’Observateur, where he is editor-in-chief of the Society pages. He is also a renowned biographer, most notably for his investigation into the life of J. D. Salinger, for which he received the 2018 Goncourt Prize for biography.

Yet one may wonder how his exceptional career came to pass. What does his life look like on a daily basis? What keeps him motivated? And above all, how far will he go?

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Frédéric Hermel is a French journalist based in Madrid since 1992. Focusing primarily on political and social issues, his career turned to sport in July 2001 when Zinédine Zidane signed as a player at Real Madrid. He becomes the correspondent of the daily newspaper "L'Equipe", "RMC" and "France Football", a position he still holds. Alain Badiou TRUMP

(Trump Critical Perspective) PUF, January-20, 104 pages

à Rights sold: English (Polity), German (Passagen Verlag) Italian (Meltemi), Argentina (Capital Intelectual).

The first philosophical interpretation of Donald Trump phenomenom by one of the most significant philosopher of our time.

Enlightened minds like to make fun of Donald Trump. The man is the symbol of a form of political stupidity that only awaits the awakening of good willing people to pass out like a bad dream. Nothing could be further from the truth. Rather than a symbol, Trump is a symptom: that of the gradual disappearance of politics in a gigantic process of unification, where the seemingly most hostile camps are actually holding hands.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Alain Badiou is a philosopher. His work is one of the most important of our time. He gave a major interview for his book Trump.

Mark Alizart

LE COUP D'ÉTAT CLIMATIQUE (The Climate Coup)

PUF, February-20, 96 pages

à Rights sold in: Argentina (La Cebra).

There is no climate crisis but a political will of the heads of states to create one by voluntarily destroying the planet.

This is the provocative thesis that is defended in this brilliant work. According to Alizar, we must thwart the “carbofascist coup” waged against mankind.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Mark Alizart is one of the most unique thinkers of his generation. He is the author of POP THÉOLOGIE (2015) INFORMATIQUE CÉLESTE (2017), CHIENS (2018) and CRYPTOCOMMUNISME (2019), translated into several languages.

Jean Baudrillard ENTRETIENS

(Interviews) PUF, October 2019, 296 pages

à Rights sold in: Argentina (Materia Oscura)

This book assembles a first selection of interviews spanning Baudrillard’s whole career, reminding us how much we miss Baudrillard: now more than ever.

Jean Baudrillard was a sensual, virtuoso thinker of seduction and disappearance; of the fatal and the true; of simulation and hyper-reality – but that’s not all. He was also a formidable orator, deploying with delight and perspicacity – in front a wide variety of audiences – the most per- plexing interpretations and the most provocative analyses of whatever subjects he was asked about. The legacy of this verbal magician, his countless interviews given to the newspapers, magazines and journals all over the world constitute what is perhaps the most precious, lively corpus, most firmly in touch with what was going on in the world and in his own mind.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Jean Baudrillard was one of the most important and controversial figures of French philosophy at the end of the 20th century. Among his books, now classics: LE SYSTÈLE DES OBJETS (Gallimard, 1968), SIMULACRES ET SIMULATION (Galilée, 1981), L’ESPRIT DU TERRORISME (Galilée, 2002).

HIGHLIGHTS

Yoann Barbereau DANS LES GEÔLES DE SIBÉRIE

(Kompromat In Siberia’s prisons) Stock, February-20, 324 pages

à English sample available.

à N°10 in the bestsellers L’Express.

à 4th reprint, 17, 500 copies in total.

à A movie based on this true story is being shot right now in Siberia.

Midnight Express in Siberia. A gripping contemporary story of escape.

“The scene unfolds not far from Lake Baikal, where I live and love and am lucky enough to be loved, in Irkutsk, the capital of eastern Siberia. It’s morning, men in balaclavas appear out of nowhere. My daughter screams. She’s five years old. I’m arrested right in front of her, then beaten – expertly – and interrogated. Worst of all I’m branded with that ignominious word I struggle to commit to paper: paedophile. These men hidden behind balaclavas and shadows want my skin. They have set in motion an implacable and brutish process of destruction that has a name, a name I know, invented by the KGB: Kompromat.

Inside Siberia’s prisons, I try to understand. In the psychiatric hospital where I’m later interned, I try to understand. I’m guaranteed fifteen years of a gruelling camp. The story of my escapes can begin. Naming the people and places doesn’t matter much. I haven’t invented anything. It’s a film, but it isn’t. It’s a novel, but it isn’t. What matters is the beautiful turning point when literature makes life more interesting than literature; what I must do is grasp it like a dagger. The baying wolfpack pursuing me were afraid this would all end up in a book. Here it is.”

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Born in 1978, Yoann Barbereau worked in Russia for over ten years, including running the Alliance française in Irkutsk. To escape his captors, he used every modern method available, outmanoeuvring the signals from his electronic tag and travelling hundreds of kilometres across Siberia using the carpool app BlaBlaCar and then on foot. His story will be brought to the big screen by Jérôme Salle, the director of Zulu which was distributed internationally.

Cédric Gras ALPINISTES DE STALINE

(Stalin's Mountaineers) Stock March 2020, 324 pages

The unpublished story of the Abalakov brothers, two mountaineers working for the glory of the Soviet regime.

Vitali and Evgeni were Siberian orphans who enjoyed rock climbing before becoming expert mountaineers. They carried out many expeditions between Caucasus and Central Asia, culminating in the 1930s with their ascents of the impressive “Stalin Peak” and “Lenin Peak” in the name of power. In a culture where mountaineering was dictated by the ideology of a new world, by conquering new territories and war, Vitali Abalakov would still become a victim of the Great Terror and the purges in 1938. He was eventually released. Despite having lost several fingers to a high-altitude snowstorm, he returned to mountaineering and achieved elite status again, heading up Spartak. His brother Evgeni meanwhile was found dead in 1948 when he was preparing to climb Everest. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Born in 1982, Cédric Gras studied geography all over the world. Bewitched by the vast Eurasian expanses, he travelled the former Soviet Union for ten years. He is one of the rising voices in French travel writing, producing books as well as documentaries. His well-received

Elisabeth Cadoche & Anne de Montarlot LE SYNDROME D'IMPOSTURE

(The Impostor Syndrome) Les Arènes, March-20, 320 pages

à English sample chapter available.

à Rights sold in: Italy (Longanesi, pre-empt), the Netherlands (Ten Have).

à A very global problem women face in every country!

à A practical guide to becoming aware of your intrinsic value, to stop being so a hard on yourself and free yourself from doubt.

à Scientific data combined with clinical case studies and interviews with famous women to address every aspect of the deficiency in self-confidence, ranging from toxic shame to self-doubt.

à A chronic feeling of not being worthy of success.

à A guide to help you regain self-confidence.

« The Impostor Syndrome » can be defined as a lack of self-confidence that makes women think their success is thanks to luck, the sympathy of others, or a mistake in being selected for the role, and that they could be exposed at any time.

Today, girls get the best results in school and higher education. They land similar jobs to men, even though, statistically, there is still a glaring gap. So, at first glance, there are many reasons to be confident. However a great many women doubt their abilities, at times to the point of being terrified that their incompetence will eventually be revealed. This phenomenon has a name: the impostor syndrome. As a whole, numerous studies show that women have less self-confidence than men. The consequences of toxic shame are serious: from paralysis in the shape of procrastination, to perfectionism – the need to control everything and everyone – which leads to burnout. Not to mention chronic stress, the depletion of emotional energy and psychological suffering (impostors believe that others have absolute self-confidence). It is possible, however, to overcome these internal blocks.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS: Elisabeth Cadoche is a documentary filmmaker and author (L’Aventure photographique, Les Feux de la rampe). She has been editor-in-chief of numerous TV programs (France Télévisions, Téva, La Chaîne universitaire).

Anne de Montarlot moved on from a career in finance in New York, to become a psychotherapist. She has been practicing in London for fourteen years.

Claire Oppert LE PANSEMENT SCHUBERT

(The Schubert Treatment) Denoël, February-20, 250 pages

à English sample available.

à A book reminiscent of works by Howard Buten or Oliver Sacks, The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat.

à Through these portraits, we also discover Claire Oppert: an admirable woman and passionate artist whose discretion and humanity illuminate the book. The author punctuates her story with more personal anecdotes such as childhood memories alongside her doctor father, her fascinating and austere studies at the Conservatory in Moscow, or her decisive meeting with the autism expert Howard Buten.

Claire Oppert established the Schubert Treatment protocol with the help of Dr. Jean-Marie Gomas. This powerful story supports a new kind of medicine, which, in addition to the body, also cares for the mind and even the soul.

In March 2012, the cellist Claire Oppert finds herself at the palliative care unit at the Sainte-Périne Hospital in Paris. A patient is screaming and struggling with two nurses who are trying to change her bandage. Claire Oppert begins playing the theme of the slow movement Trio No. 2 by Schubert. The patient suddenly calms down. Thus the Schubert Treatment protocol was born, or music to alleviate pain. Here, Claire Oppert retraces her experiences with autistic children, end-of-life patients, or even those who are said to be insane. A date, a place, and a musical work introduce each of these portraits. There are, for example, the young autistics for whom music seems to fill the void of language, or a former boxer for whom Piaf’s “Je ne regrette rien” recalls his best fights. In addition to easing suffering, music also builds interpersonal bridges: a look, a smile, a tear, and sometimes (when words are still possible), memories, dreams, and far-off places...

The results of the 112 “Schubert Treatments” published in 2016 demonstrate a 50% decrease in pain for patients. The positive effect on patients’ anxiety was determined to be close to 90%. The positive effects on the nursing staff: 100%. What’s more, this last and massive benefit contributed in turn to better care.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Born in Paris into a family of doctors and artists, Claire Oppert obtained her degree from the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow in 1993. She also earned a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from the Sorbonne and a university degree in art therapy from the school of medicine in Tours.

Julia Kristeva DOSTOÏEVSKI

(Dostoyevsky) Buchet Chastel, March-20, 256 pages

à In every reader’s life, there are certain authors who hold a special place. The “Authors of My Life” series invites today’s great writers to share their admiration for a literary classic. In a similar vein to Corrêa/Buchet Chastel’s “Immortal Pages” series from the 1930s and 40s, each volume is composed of a presentation of the chosen author followed by a personal anthology.

Born in Bulgaria, Julia Kristeva was able to read Dostoyevsky’s work in the original Russian as a teenager. Having gone on to become one of the major European intellectual figures of our times, in this book, she provides a deep and stimulating analysis of an author who has influenced her life.

“With his eyes riveted on the Bulgarian edition of The Idiot, my father sternly advises me not to read it: ‘Destructive, diabolical, and sticky. It’s over the top, you won’t like it, forget about it.’ His dream was for me to escape ‘The Bowels of Hell,’ as he referred to our native Bulgaria. In order to help make that desperate dream come true, the best thing was for me to develop my innate taste for clarity and freedom… in French, needless to say, since he had introduced me to the language of La Fontaine and Voltaire. I obviously disobeyed the paternal advice, as usual, and dove headfirst into Dosto. Awed, overwhelmed, swallowed up.”

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Bulgarian by birth, Julia Kristeva has lived in France for over 50 years. She is a writer, psychoanalyst, emeritus professor at Paris 7-Diderot University, and a full member of the Psychoanalytic Society of Paris. She has received honorary degrees from numerous universities in the USA, Canada, and Europe where she teaches regularly. In December 2004, she became the first winner of the Holberg Prize; she was awarded the Hannah Arendt Prize two years later, and the Vaclav Havel Prize in 2008. She has written nearly 30 books, all of which have been entirely translated into English.

Jacques Ravenne LA CHUTE

(The Fall: The Last Days Of Robespierre) Perrin, January-20, 277 pages

à French pocket rights sold to: Pocket.

à A riveting and entirely true story, drawn from undisputed sources, a “historical thriller” that keeps readers on the edge of their seats from start to finish.

The decline and fall of Robespierre – known as “the incorruptible” – A ground-breaking account combining history and suspense.

July 26, 1794. As the tumbrils roll, taking those condemned that day to the guillotine, Paris is all agog: after weeks of absence, Robespierre is going to speak. What will the most feared man in France say? Will he announce the end of the Terror or, on the contrary, proclaim a dictatorship? From the deadly prisons to the painter David’s studio, from the Palais Royal gambling houses to behind the scenes at the National Convention, who will triumph? Robespierre, who wants to purify the republic, or his opponents who claim they will save it? Eleonora or Teresa, each in love with a man who, if he loses the battle he is fighting, will take her down with him? Three decisive days when everything becomes denunciation, manipulation, conspiracy. Three days when winning means survival. Three days when the republic will have its blood baptism. Three days that will shake up France’s destiny.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Author of detective novels and historical essays, Jacques Ravenne (and his co-author Éric Giacometti) have created two successful series: The Investigations of Commissaire Marcas and the saga SOLEIL NOIR, translated into twenty languages. Emanuele Coccia MÉTAMORPHOSES

(Metamorphosis) Payot Rivages, January-20, 192 pages

à Rights sold in: Italy (Einaudi), Germany (Hanser Verlag), Brazil (Dantes Editora), World English (Polity Press).

à Spanish offer.

à Metamorphosis has always fascinated both scientists and fiction writers, yet it has rarely been considered by philosophers. All living things are subjected to it: metamorphosis is the most basic and original experience of life, the one that defines its strengths and limitations.

Through the results of contemporary biology research, as well as myths and literature, the author of “The Life of Plants” lays down the foundations for a philosophy of the mysterious phenomenon that is the metamorphosis.

Butterflies and frogs aren’t the only ones affected by it. The fact is, since Darwin, we have known that all species and all forms of life are just metamorpho-ses of other forms, many of which have since disappeared. Thus, humanity is no more than the meta- morphosis that myriad animal-life forms were subjected to before becoming what we now are. We expe- rience metamorphosis on the scale of our own lives as well, when we are born, going from an “amniotic” existence to an “air-supported” life form. More generally, feeding of all types is a perfect example of it: eating means being the place where the eaten undergoes metamorpho- sis into the flesh of the eater. All life, as a metamorphic act, is the simultaneous fashioning of a body and of the world in which it lives.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Emanuele Coccia is Senior Lecturer at the EHESS and one of our most innovative contemporary philosophers.

Emanuele Coccia LA VIE DES PLANTES

(The Life of Plants) Rivages, November 2017, 192 pages

à Rights sold in: World Spanish (Miño & Davila Editores), Germany (Hanser Verlag), Italy (Il Mulino), Finland (Tutkijaliitto), English (Polity Press, World), the Netherlands (Leejmagazijn), Japanese (Keiso Shobo), Portuguese (Cultura e Barbarie, Brasil and Sistema solar, Portugal), Turkish (Is Bank Culture).

à Intertwining examples drawn from philosophy, natural sciences and art, this book attempts to penetrate the mystery of these singular beings.

A singular and striking book about the philosophical side of these living beings that are often overlooked.

They are among the most prolific inhabitants of our planet, yet philosophy has neglected and even scorned them: plants have always been the victims of metaphysical snobbery. Despite our growing concern for ecology and increasing attention to issues concerning nature and animals, plants, their life forms and nature remain an enigma for philosophy. Autotrophic beings living on the cusp between the inorganic and the organic; beings entirely focused on the effort of taking shape, of fashioning their own bodies; beings with no possibility of uprooting themselves and moving about, plants still participate fully in the world around them. As such, they represent the most intense and paradigmatic form of being-in-the-world.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: After studying both in Italy and in Paris, Emanuele Coccia, philosopher, is now an associate professor at the École des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales. He has also taught at the University of Freiburg (and, more recently, at Columbia University .

Michel Cymes & Patricia Chalon SUR L'AMOUR

(On Love) Stock, April-20, 232 pages

à As a man and a woman, both specialists in their fields, at he authors went about challenging each other’s point of view with determination, empathy and humour.

A psychologist and a doctor discuss everything about love. From "orgasm" and "fantasy" to "lover" and "mother"…

“We definitely don’t understand each other... we might as well be speaking different languages!” This is more or less how a good many heated conversations between men and women end.

Eventually, once the crisis is over, we realise that – despite our love, our good faith and our best efforts – it was all a huge... misunderstanding.

It’s in an attempt to clear up this very misunderstanding (because we are old friends, one a man, the other a woman, one a doctor, the other a psychologist), that we felt we wanted to try to get to know each other so as to have a real chance of better understanding each other’s language, despite our obvious differences.

We searched through our respective professional practices for anything that might explain behavioural differences from a psychological or medical point of view. We also interviewed people around us, particularly the younger generation, because we wanted to understand how their vision of the world differed from our own.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS: Michel Cymes is a specialist doctor as well as a popular television presenter. Stock has published his commercial successes including VIVEZ MIEUX ET PLUS LONGTEMPS (330,000 copies sold), VOTRE CERVEAU and CHERS HYPOCONDRIAQUES all of which have been sold in translation. Previous titles published in Russia by Ripol Classic.

Patricia Chalon is a psychologist and psychotherapist who specialises in interactive therapy.

Alexandre Stern LE SINGE CUISINIER

(How Cooking Made Us Human) Odile Jacob, March-20, 240 pages

à The human epic told through culinary inventions and practices, from our ancestors to the present day.

à How the invention of culinary and agricultural practices, the discovery and exchange of products, through the millennia have contributed to the civilization of humankind.

à Cooking is an integral part of human evolution.

For close to three million years, our way of choosing and preparing our food has shaped our humanity, both physiologically and culturally. The past and present of humanity told through culinary inventions and practices.

In matters of food, we find ourselves today confronted with a paradox: while culinary arts achieve unprecedented heights, many, notably the poorest among us, only have access to industrial, low-quality, low nutrition food. Prepared dishes, ultra-processed food, industrial farms; in the past fifty years we have witnessed a dis-invention of culinary practices patiently developed over millennia. In this context of a loss of our gastronomic bearings, what can we learn from the past? More than any other uniquely human accomplishment, cooking has played the most important role in the evolution of our species. For close to three million years, our way of choosing and preparing our food has shaped our humanity, both physiologically and culturally.

Through a panorama of the stages in the evolution of cooking – from hunter-gatherer societies to the industrialization of our food – the author puts the origin of our food-eating behavior in perspective. This great human epic told through the history of cooking allows us to question our current practices and consider what we will aspire to in the future.

à Rights sold in: Romania (Trei).

à The transformations of self-esteem: from personal roots to collective roots.

à The transformations of social connections: from competition and every man for himself

à (status, image...) to collaboration.

Together these two specialists shed new light on how our relationships with others contribute to our inner sense of security and take us on a voyage of what it truly means to be human!

In contemporary society, our connections to others have been replaced by autonomy, individualism and new technology, whereas before these were imperative to our survival. What does the latest research in psychology tell us about interdependency and its importance for our well-being and inner sense of security ? André and Shankland lucidly explore interdependency using the most up-to-date studies to show how social interactions and proximity with others shape us at our core, and why cultivating our relationships is so essential to our wellbeing, not forgetting the benefits for our society at large. From friendships to romantic relationships to creating a family, this is an exploration of what makes us profoundly human.

An ode to interdependency or the relationships that help us live better.

CURRENT TOPICS / SOCIETY

Nathalie Gontard & Hélène Seignier PLASTIQUE, LE GRAND EMBALLEMENT

(Plastic, The Whole Package) Stock, April-20, 220 pages

à We now need to face the facts: millions of recyclers and hundreds of inventers of “new materials” won’t be able to stop the steady contamination of our environment. We must eradicate the source of the danger and question politicians and industrialists blinded by their belief in purely material progress.

A necessary book about our society’s addiction to plastic.

Nathalie Gontard has been exploring and studying plastic in her laboratory and all over the world for 30 years. Initially fascinated by this magic material’s potential, she watched as stealthily invaded the planet, making traditional materials look dated. She found its footprints on beaches, deep in the soil and even inside countless animals.

It’s up to us to mobilise ourselves and bring an end to this catastrophic overproduction. It’s up to us to find a way of ensuring our comfort without destabilising this little planet whose tenants we are. We must acknowledge our addiction in order to reduce our consumption to what is strictly necessary. A perfectly accessible challenge that this book encourages us to take up straight away.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS: Nathalie Gontard, a researcher at INRA (the French national instate for agronomic research), is one of the world’s top experts on plastics. She came to the attention of the general public in 2018 in the popular French television programme Cash Investigation devoted to plastic. She has continued to further her understanding by combining her research with her experience as a consumer.

Hélène Seingier is a journalist on the editorial board of the weekly magazine Le 1.

Denis Colombi OÙ VA L'ARGENT DES PAUVRES (Where Does Poor People’s Money Go?)

Payot Rivages, January-20, 352 pages

à Revealing the mechanisms of pov- erty is a way of exploring possible solutions: reforming public assistance, the gleaning economy, micro-credit, universal income and more.

Is it better to give a homeless person a meal ticket or a coin? We all think we’re good money managers who spend our income wisely, but is that really so?

A homeless person with a state- of-the-art cellphone is a shocking image... but why? Because it’s an unjustifiable expense? A sign of bad money management? Although they don’t have much, even the poor do have some money, and it inspires all sorts of delusions: people suppose that it is poorly managed, poorly spent, poorly apportioned. Yet we rarely stop to wonder about how they manage their money, what happens to it, and who gets rich from it. Based on real-life examples drawn from current events, this book deconstructs our perceptions of poverty. But asking where poor people’s money goes also leads us to explore our own relationship to consumerism: the share of luxury or the superfluous in our lives, the things we feel obliged to buy, the need – or lack thereof – for the “little splurges” we pamper ourselves with, and the extent to which other people’s opinions influence our purchasing habits.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Author of a well-known popular- science blog in which he shares a sociologist’s stance on current events, Denis Colombi teaches economics and social sciences in a Parisian high school.

Maïa Mazaurette SORTIR DU TROU, LEVER LA TÊTE

(Out of the Hole. Heads Up) Anne Carrière, January-20, 300 pages

à « Sex-Appeal » is a collection run by par Camille Emmanuelle. Essays, documents, narrations, short stories and non-fictions about sex, sexuality in the plural, love, seduction, genre and porn culture.

Contemporary sexuality seems to be at its lowest. Or disenchanted, at least. Troubled by the questions raised by the MeToo movement, but also by the international decline of libido, by power issues and unrealistic injunctions. The result being a huge lassitude. Who or what is to blame ?

A sexuality designed as a matter of orifices, an imagined conception of women as reduced to a void to be filled, whereas they do have a sex, pulsating and powerful. The first part of this essay, Out of the Hole, describes how History, culture and psychoanalysis have drastically restricted our sexual practices. Yet, as satire won’t help us find the way back to joy and pleasure, the second part, Heads Up, offers an optimistic, practical and ambitious ars erotica focusing on an ethical and imaginative basis. The programme is : a glorious and radiant sexual life, within everyone’s reach. Another approach to sexuality is possible, you just have to make it happen. Out of the Hole explains why. Heads Up shows how.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Maïa Mazaurette is a writer, a columnist and an illustrator. Most of her editorial and fictional work deals with the issues of sexuality and the place of the body in society. She is a regular columnist for Le Monde, GQ Magazine, Usbek & Rica and Le Temps, and she decodes the norms, injunctions and stereotyped representations in regard to genre and sexuality. A fierce nomad, she’s been an expatriate for twelve years and currently lives in Brooklyn.

HISTORY

Alain Corbin TERRA INCOGNITA (A History of Ignorance)

Albin Michel, March-20, 256 pages

à Under option in: Spain, Brazil, English, China, Korea, Japan, Russia, Ukraine.

à This book is a lesson in modesty for all scientists.

After a life of research, Alain Corbin comes back to basics: a history of ignorance, a history of all the things we did not know, for centuries - indeed millennia - about a fundamental subject: the Earth.

In this extraordinary book, Corbin reveals all the most outlandish theories that ever emerged. Sometimes brilliant errors, often very strange. For example, did you know that in 1778, a scholar published a book claiming that the heat of the earth came from its core, hence it would go on cooling? Others wrote that before the Flood, giant men and animals wandered the Earth, and that their remains were still visible in calcareous rocks. Ignorance was a stimulant to the imagination. The absence of certitudes opened the gates to anxieties, but also to optimistic theories.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Alain Corbin is one of the greatest French historians alive today. A pioneer in the history of representations, sensitivities and the body, he has authored several successful books.

Valérie Perthuis-Porteret VOUS N'AUREZ PAS LES ENFANTS

(You Won’t Get The Children) XO, February-20, 234 pages

à This is the untold story of the greatest rescue of Jewish children, destined for death, undertaken in France during the Second World War by an incredible chain of men and women working together.

à An exceptional historical document accompanied by photos of the camp of Vénissieux.

à A voice of remembrance and a homage to the virtuous.

As she flicked through the entry-and-exit records of children taken into a chateau in the Drôme region of France during WWII, Portheret’s attention was seized by a detail: little “V”s added in lead pencil after a dozen names. What did it mean?

She was told that the names were probably those of Jewish children hidden in the chateau under a false identity after being rescued from a camp situated at Vénissieux in the suburbs of Lyon. “V” for Vénissieux. That was where 1,016 foreign Jews, rounded up on 26 August 1942, were held awaiting “sorting”.

26 August 1942. In response to Nazi demands, the French Vichy government ordered the rounding up of foreign Jews in the region of Lyon. Early that morning, 1,016 were arrested and assembled in a “sorting” camp in Vénisseux. Night of 28 to 29 August 1942. Members of welfare organisations present in the camp managed to convince parents to sign papers abandoning their own children to the care of a Christian charity, the only way to save them from deportation.

Despite the mothers’ shouting, weeping and suicide attempts, 108 children are separated from their parents and surreptitiously removed from the camp. At the same time, gendarmes take 545 adults by coach to the station of St Priest – direction Drancy and then Auschzwitz, where the great majority of them will be gassed. In the following hours, the police launch a search for these children hidden in a former convent. In leaflets, the Resistance declares: “You won’t get the children”.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: After 25 years of research, historian Valérie Portheret has recreated the rescue from the camp of Vénissieux and has managed to identify 90 of the 108 children saved from deportation, now living all over the world, collecting testimonies from many of them. This extraordinary story captivated public opinion at the time, forcing Vichy to refuse the Nazis’ demands to deport further Jews.

Laurent Pfaadt NOUS ÉTIONS DES MALGRÉ-NOUS

(We Were “Malgré-Nous”) Le Cherche Midi, March 2020, 304 pages

à A poignant historical account of the author’s family tossed about according to the an- nexations of history. A tribute that extends to all these French Alsatians who were forcibly incorporated into the German army and condemned to suffer their fate.

à The little-known story of les «Malgré-Nous» (the Unwilling Ones) who deserted the Wehrmacht and were interned, and died, in the Soviet camps.

à A non-fiction work blending narrative and history.

1914. The outbreak of the First World War abruptly brought to an end the carefree days of the Pfaadt family, natives of Bischwiller in Alsace. Guillaume and Fredericke watch their four sons - Guillaume, Charles, Henri and Eugène - head off to the front. Much later, as tradition demands, the oldest of the four boys will name his own first son Guillaume, meaning that three generations of Guillaume Pfaadt will experience the hardships of world wars.

The brothers join the German ranks except for Henri who, residing in Paris, is enlisted into the French army. They endure life in the trenches, while back in Bischwiller the inhabitants have to comply with the strict ordinances of their German overlords and renounce their French heritage. Nobody knows if brothers Henri and Charles confronted each other on the battlefields - in which the much-loved youngest brother Eugène were killed.

After the war, Alsace once again reverts to France, but the respite for the Pfaadt family is short-lived, as is peace in Europe. Would Guillaume, who fought against the Tsarist army in 1917, have ever imagined that his eldest son might once again be taking on the Russians some twenty years later? But on this occasion, Guillaume Pfaadt refuses to be enlisted in the Wehrmacht and chooses to desert instead, seduced like so many of the other Unwilling Ones by the Soviet rhetoric. But the reality of the conditions in the Russian camp of Tambov will soon shatter Guillaume’s dreams of freedom...

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: A graduate in political science, Laurent Pfaadt is the author of several political biographies (JACQUES CHIRAC A DIT..., Mazarine, 2016; FRANÇOIS HOLLANDE DE A À Z, City, 2012; SIMONE VEIL, UNE PASSION FRANÇAISE, City, 2011).

BIOGRAPHIES

Frédéric Granier LES BEATLES

(The Beatles: Four Boys in the Century) Perrin, January-20, 566 pages

à Behind pop music’s most beautiful score, another fascinating story finally emerges. Mass culture, psychedelics, artificial paradises, peace activism --the phenomena they experienced or helped launch not only tell the history of the 1960s, they also highlight a social and cultural revolution with still perceptible impacts.

Through rare documents and unpublished interviews, with true narrative art, the author unravels the threads of an epic that was less smooth and successful than the record sales (more than two billion records sold since 1962) suggest. The author elucidates what McCartney has rightly said: ‘‘We were not only in the spirit of the moment; we were in the spirit of the century.’’

From their erratic beginnings in Liverpool and Hamburg to On April 10, 1970, the news made headlines around the world: Paul McCartney was leaving the Beatles. His departure not only signaled the split-up of the most popular group of all time, it also meant the end of an extraordinary adventure: four teenagers who came out of the cellars of Liverpool to become accomplished musicians, embodiments of the entire post-war generation’s thirst for freedom. While Let It Be, their testament song, was proving to be a final success, McCartney sued his three former associates. The dream was over. And yet, fifty years later, their legend remains.

She Loves You, Help, Yesterday, Hey Jude, Come Together, Something... The two hundred songs recorded by John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr in just eight years are still revered by millions of fans. Their twelve albums constitute an awesome and irreplaceable discography, a source of inspiration for all musicians today.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Journalist and author Frédéric Granier is a department head at the French magazine, Geo. A collector of rare recordings and films, he has written numerous books on pop culture.

Andreï Kozovoï BREJNEV

(Brezhnev: The Anti-Hero) Perrin, April-20, around 300 pages

à The author has put to use a vast body of sources, notably Brezhnev’s Diaries published in Russian as well as many unpublished USSR archives.

The book, which recounts with precision Brezhnev’s uncertain ascent to the top, his apogee and then his decline, illustrates how he enabled the USSR to reach its highest level of power, while sowing the seeds of its dissolution. The parallel with Putin’s Russia becomes self-evident and it provides a better understanding of the period in which Brezhnev was immersed, and of the political model that shaped him.

Leonid Ilitch Brezhnev led the USSR from 1964 to 1982, a period marked by a number of pivotal events: the crackdown on the Prague Spring (August 1968); the implementation of the “détente” policy, first with France (De Gaulle’s visit in 1966, numerous Brezhnev meetings with Georges Pompidou and Giscard d’Estaing), then Brandt’s Germany, and most remarkably Nixon’s United States; the invasion of Afghanistan (December 1979); the conflict in Poland, which created tension in Europe; the exile of the famous dissident Alexander Solzhenitsyn; and others.

To explain how Brezhnev managed to stay in power for so long, the author depicts him in his daily life, disregarding the usual clichés of the senile leader with his medals and reminding us that he was a responsible dictator, focused on his country’s interests. Brezhnev is seen as a seductive character, capable of feeling, which distinguishes him from his predecessors Stalin and Khrushchev whom he knew personally.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: A lecturer at the University of Lille, Andrei Kozovoï has published several books including Russie, réformes et dictatures (Russia, reforms and dictatorships), published by Perrin.

Thierry Sarmant PIERRE LE GRAND

(Peter the Great) Perrin, March-20, 500 pages

à Based on the most recent findings of Russian, German, French, British and American researchers.

Peter the Great or the birth of modern Russia. The first biography with a comparative history approach exploring the man and the myth and incorporating the most recent contributions of international historiographical research.

Peter the Great is one of the most extraordinary figures in Russian history. Tsar of Russia from 1682 to 1725, he modernized his empire at the pace of a forced march; reformed the army, the State and the Church; founded Saint Petersburg; created a navy; and initiated a genuine “cultural revolution” that helped create modern Russia. He was one of the first heads of state to have a global geopolitical vision.

His drive for conquest pointed him in many directions: towards the Black Sea and the Baltic, but also towards Siberia, Central Asia and Persia, and as far away as India and North America. The life of this sovereign thus raises questions both about Russian identity and also about the mechanisms of the world’s Westernization. The new biography compares this remarkable character with his “monarch colleagues” at the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries – Louis XIV, William of Orange, Frederic- Guillaume of Prussia – as well as with history’s other great reformers.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Thierry Sarmant, paleographic archivist with a doctorate from the University of Paris I, is director of collections at the Mobilier national (National Museum of Furniture - formerly La manufacture des Gobelins founded by Louis XIV in 1662). He has published several works, including, with Perrin, 1715. LA FRANCE ET LE MONDE (1715. France and the world). He was one of the curators of the 2017 exhibition “Peter the Great. A tsar in France. 1717” held at the Grand Trianon, Versailles.

Alain Blondy PAUL Ier

(Paul I: The Madness of a Tsar) Perrin, January-20, 333 pages

à Basing his account on multiple sources, Alain Blondy revives the Shakespearean destiny of this unpopular tsar whose actions reflected both his neurotic desire for retribution and his genius for self-sabotage.

The first major biography of the “Russian Caligula” whose dark reputation has overshadowed his intelligence and his efforts to reform his country.

History and the Russians were quick to forget Paul I. The illegitimate son of the great Catherine II, he was nonetheless tsar of Russia from 1796 until his death in 1801. A mercurial man, marked throughout his life by the wounds of his unhappy childhood, he came to power only when his mother died, after being kept on the sidelines for forty-two years.

Taking the opposite direction from Catherine’s during her reign, he reformed the country and tightened the rules regarding the nobles. His measures, numerous and trivial, displeased the court, the army and the people simultaneously. Outside Russia, he quarreled with his allies, and particularly with England over his insistence on proclaiming himself master of Malta.

Gifted in the art of making enemies, Paul I was ignobly assassinated by a group of officers in his entourage on the night of 21 March 1801. His murder, an outcome of the Russian nobility’s animosity, also appears to have been linked to underhanded maneuvers by England.

François-Guillaume Lorrain LOUIS XIV L'ENFANT ROI

(Louis XIV The Child King) XO, Janvier-20, 336 pages

à A passionate writer of historical fiction, François-Guillaume Lorrain brings to life, before our eyes, the private childhood of one of the most fascinating figures of French history. This childhood and adolescence was one of the most epic, painful and fascinating of any French statesman.

à Plunge into the harsh, extraordinary apprenticeship of solitude and power that was the childhood of Louis XIV

à A child both full of life and gravely serious – and already a commanding presence. A likeable, somewhat lost child, weighed down by his onerous destiny.

How did the young Louis become the Sun King, the monarch under whom France’s grandeur shone so dazzlingly?

The childhood of Louis XIV was both unhappy and romantic. Crushed by his teachers, watched over by Mazarin who initiated him into the art of intrigue and taught him how to be a king, whipped by his mother Anne of Austria, who let him get away with nothing, his upbringing was draconian.

Sovereign at five years old, he found himself thrown into one of the most turbulent periods in the history of France. Parliament pushes him around, princes challenge him and the people invade his palace. Louis is both a capricious, stubborn child and a young king who must suffer his elders’ contempt in silence.

Before the rising of the sun had been a “little man” and the humiliated Louis’ sole ambition became to exert his power.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: François-Guillaume Lorrain is a journalist and writer. Graduate of the Ecole Normale, lecturer in literature, he is the author of ten novels and non-fiction works. In 2019 he was awarded the Contemporary History Book Prize.

“An authentic, extraordinary novel that retraces the early years of the future Sun King […] An intensely pleasurable and seductive read from the talented pen of storyteller François-Guillaume Lorrain”. Le Figaro Magazine

“A great and finely orchestrated ballet about the education of a king.” L’Obs

Laurent Schang VON RUNDSTEDT

(Von Rundstedt) Perrin, February-20, 400 pages

A biography of Field Marchhal von Rundstedt, “the last Prussian” who served Hitler, for whom the honor of serving outweighed any other consideration.

His name appears in all books related to the Second World War in Europe, yet he is probably the least known of the great generals of the Wehrmacht. Gerd von Rundstedt (1875-1953), a Prussian aristocrat, veteran of the Great War and senior commander of the German armed forces, took part in the main European campaigns of the conflict, both as the designer and executor of invasion plans: Poland in 1939 was his project, as was, in part, France in 1940, and France and Russia in 1941.

He was an old-school officer, a great tactician, a master of the art of operations, but not a great strategist – that domain, in any case, was taken over by Hitler after 1941. He had the unique honor of being dismissed from his post three times in a single war by the Führer, who could not, in fact, do without him. For example, he was removed from his command for failing to save the situation after the D-Day landing, but recalled at the end of the summer of 1944 to preside over the military court that tried a number of his peers for their part in the July 20 assassination attempt on Hitler.

Dismissed definitively in March 1945 -- he had failed to prevent the Reich’s enemies from crossing the Rhine -- he was arrested by the Americans in Bavaria where, exhausted and suffering from rheumatism, he was being treated in a sanatorium.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Laurent Schang, journalist and publisher, is a specialist of the Second World War and the author of several books dealing with European wars down through the ages, including LE BRAS DROIT DU MONDE LIBRE (The Free World’s Right Arm) (Perrin) and KRIEGSPIEL 2014 (Retour aux sources editions).

Christian Destremau IAN FLEMING

(Ian Fleming) Perrin, April-20, 384 pages

Christian Destremau, with his extensive knowledge of British culture, skillfully paints an intimate portrait of this creative genius whose hero, from episode to episode, continues to fascinate millions of people.

Born into a wealthy Scottish family and growing up surrounded by strong personalities, Fleming, after a typical upper-class education, wandered far and wide seeking his destiny. His early years included the aborted start of a military career; a crucial passage at Reuters, where he learned to write simply and quickly; a few years in banking. He seemed headed towards a relatively mediocre future, distinguished only by his female conquests – he was inclined to be a womanizer. The war was the real impetus. Fleming joined the naval intelligence service, concocting the most daring plans and standing out due to his problem-solving abilities and lack of respect for the hierarchy. Immediately after the war, he resumed his haphazard lifestyle, between freelance journalistic assignments and stays in Jamaica where he acquired a house in 1946 named “Goldeneye”.

Fleming took up literature more or less by chance in 1952, embarking on a decade of intense creativity and delivering, one after the other, about ten episodes of James Bond. The first, in 1953, was Casino Royale. Combining exotic adventures, elaborate intrigue, outlandish “bad guys”, torture, sadomasochism, seduction and sex, the series completely renovated the genre and attracted an ever-increasing number of readers. By the late 1960s, James Bond was a major export product, an element of “Soft Power”: 007 contributed, in the same way as the Queen, to the United Kingdom’s global prestige. His influence was such, in the context of the Cold War, one wonders to what extent he might have influenced British and American foreign policy.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Christian Destemau is a historian of the Second World War and a keen connoisseur of British culture, having spent a good part of this childhood in the United Kingdom. He has written a masterful biography of LAWRENCE OF ARABIA (2014) and the highly acclaimed CE QUE SAVAIENT LES ALLIÉS (What the Allies knew) (2007), LE MOYEN-ORIENT PENDANT LA SECONDE GUERRE MONDIALE (The Middle East during the Second World War) (2011) and CHURCHILL ET LA FRANCE (Churchill and France)(2017), all published by Perrin.

Michel Faure AUGUSTO PINOCHET

(Pinochet) Perrin, January-20, 380 pages

à Based on several years of research, Michel Faure’s forceful portrait of Pinochet unravels the mysteries of an introverted, cautious and cunning man.

The life of an enigmatic 20th century dictator. Augusto Pinochet is one of the most hated figures of the last century. The author, however, views him as an enigma and approaches the Chilean dictator’s biography as a major investigation.

How did a legitimist soldier, in the great “Prussian” tradition of the Chilean army, suddenly become the brutal leader of a coup d’état? And how could this heinous putschist, whose dictatorship was marked by implacable ferocity, feel, from the very first moments he came to power, a reverence for democracy and eventually restore it? Why did a general who worshipped order, authority and vertical command open his door to young liberal economists who would deregulate and undermine the foundations of his regime by carrying out a forced modernization of Chile? And finally, how did this ill-fated dictator manage to escape justice and die quietly in his bed?

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Michel Faure is a journalist and former foreign correspondent for the magazine L’Express, for which he covered Latin America, and Chile in particular, for many years. He is the author of Une Histoire du Brésil (A History of Brazil) published by Perrin.

Computing Pioneer) Fayard, September 2019, 300 pages

A fascinating biography of Ada Lovelace exploring the little known destiny of a woman whose genius and audacity would shape the world as we know it today.

Augusta Ada King, the Countess of Lovelace and the daughter of the poet Lord Byron, was an English aristocrat trapped in the confines of a 19th century that had yet to embrace modernity. Yet it was this same sickly young woman, squeezed into a corset and caught between a cumbersome husband and an abusive mother, who developed the world’s first computer program. If not for her pioneering work with numbers, there would be no computers, no Internet, and no space exploration...

CULTURAL ESSAY

Philippe Boulanger LA GÉOGRAPHIE, REINE DES BATAILLES

(Geography, Queen of Battles) Perrin, March-20, 368 pages

à Military engagement in several theatres of operations, the securing of national territory against terrorist threat, regional geopolitical and geostrategic upheavals, mapping of viral and bacterial infections, management of natural disasters, support for determining areas to be rebuilt, learning about local cultures -- military geography today, at the heart of the digital and cartographic revolution and with new high-tech tools such as navigation satellites enabling real-time geolocation, is undergoing profound changes.

“Geography is used, first and foremost, to make war.” (Yves Lacoste). Boulanger provides a masterful treatment of military geography, its links to military operations and its future.

Geography has always been of concern to princes and strategists. Knowledge of the physical environment, routes, resources, fortified cities, populations to be administered, for example, does indeed constitute one of the foundations of conquests and territorial governance. This has been understood since Antiquity -- Sun Tzu, for one, devoted lengthy passages to the topic in The Art of War and Julius Caesar, in his Gallic Wars, wrote about the tactical exploitation of the terrain in maneuvers. It was not until the 19th century, however, that the elements of geographical knowledge in Europe were rationalized and a purely military geography emerged. It became, among other things, a means of combating the occupation of territories by Napoleonic armies.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: A professor of geography at the Sorbonne, specializing in military geography, geostrategy and geopolitics, Philippe Boulanger also teaches in various academic institutions and military academies. He has written LA GÉOGRAPHIE MILITAIRE FRANÇAISE 1871-1939 (French Military Geography) (Economia, 2002, winner of the 2003 Lucien Wyse-Bonaparte Prize of the Société de géo- graphie de Paris), GÉOGRAPHIE MILITAIRE (Military Geography) (Ellipses, 2006) and GÉOGRAPHIE MILITAIRE ET GÉOSTRATÉGIE, ENJEUX ET CRISES DU MONDE (Armand Colin, 2011).

SENTINELLE DE L’OCEAN (A Brief History of Scallops)

Équateurs, Novembre-19, 144 pages

à With clarity and humour, Laurent Chauvaud takes us to the very heart of his laboratory located at the end of the harbour in Brest, but also to the field in Ouessant, in Morocco, in Norway or New Caledonia, from the South Pole to the North Pole.

à During his explorations, he tells us stories about shells, his stunning discoveries, his enthralling profession that improves serendipity, or the art of finding what you weren’t looking for.

Once upon a time...scallops! Since its first appearance 25 million years ago in Europe on the Atlantic coast, the scallop has never ceased to fascinate.

During Antiquity, it was used as an ornament; then it became a religious symbol (on St James’s Way) as well as an artistic one (related to Venus, femininity and maternity). It was only in the early 20th century that Bretons started fishing and eating them. Thanks to recent research led by Laurent Chauvaud and others, this animal has become a scientific object, a mathematical model, a calendar, a thermometer, a witness of contaminations, an environmental record, a sentinel of past and present evolutions of the marine environment, and of global warming more generally (melting of the ice caps, evolution of temperatures, luminosity variations), and even a musical instrument through which we can hear the valves’ clapping, yet another sound that bears a message: it tells us the state of the sea.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Laurent Chauvaud is a research director at the CNRS.

Baptiste Morizot MANIÈRES D'ÊTRE VIVANT

(Different Ways of Being Alive) Actes Sud, February-20, 336 pages

à This book looks at animal-life in general, including that of humans, as “different ways of being alive”.

Philosopher Baptiste Morizot expands his philosophical enquiry into the notion of tracking, not only tracking living creatures in their natural habitat but also our ideas of them in literature and thought.

After Sur la piste animale, Baptiste Morizot’s second work in the Mondes Sauvages collection expands his philosophical enquiry into the notion of tracking, not only tracking living creatures in their natural habitat but also our ideas of them in literature and thought. In his work we set out on the trail of a pack of wolves in the Vercors snow, investigating the mysterious meanings of nocturnal howling shared with them by night. This leads us to the trail of the very appearance of the notion of animality in the history of our own culture. We then trace our ancestors right back to sea sponges, before setting out on the mark left in our thought by our “inner-animals”, the animal metaphors used to describe our feelings. Then we set out on the trail of the interdependencies inherent in a Provencal prairie ecosystem inhabited by sheep, shepherds and predators to imagine an alternative approach to life. Each trail brings us back the importance of our sensitivity to living creatures and how we have to learn to live side-by-side with them and consider them differently. The animal kingdom cannot be reduced to the stuff of children’s tales or considered as inferior life-forms. We cohabit the Earth alongside them and we share the same ascendancy, and thus the enigma of life itself. The mystery of living within a body, a body that has to interpret and negotiate its life is shared throughout animal- and human-kind: it is the vital universal condition, one which gives us the strongest sense of belonging.

Here lies the paradox: through our shared ancestry, animals are both related to us yet foreign to us, because their different bodies suggest forms of existence incomprehensible to our minds. This book looks at animal-life in general, including that of humans, as “different ways of being alive”.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Baptiste Morizot is a writer and lecturer in philosophy at the University of Aix-Marseille. His work is devoted to the relationship between the human and living and is based on extensive fieldwork, especially in tracking wild animals. He has also written DIPLOMATES. COHABITER AVEC LES LOUPS SUR UNE AUTRE CARTE DU VIVANT (Wildproject, 2016).

Marc Petitjean L’AMI JAPONAIS (The Japanese Friend)

Arléa, March-20, 160 pages

à Rights sold in: USA (The Other Press)

The fascinating and romantic life of Master Kunihiko Moriguchi, painter of kimono.

Kunihiko Moriguchi was born in Kyoto in 1941. He has been practicing kimono painting for almost half a century. In Japan, where craftsmanship is considered an art in its own right, he received the prestigious title of Living National Treasure, just like his father before him. In the 1960s, he studied graphic design at the National School of Decorative Arts in Paris (after an extraordinary thirty-day boat trip) and became friends with the painter Balthus who influenced his artistic career. He lived there the happy years of post-war Paris and kept a deep nostalgia and a wonderful French about it. Returning to Kyoto, he worked alongside his father who passed on to him the demanding art of Yuzen. Kunihiko will nevertheless renew the tradition by introducing abstract patterns.

His kimonos are exhibited in major museums in Japan and abroad. The kimono then ceases to be a garment and becomes something subtle and immaterial: it keeps in it the memory and the life of those who wore it.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Filmmaker, photographer and author, Marc Petitjean has made many documentaries, including Blessures atomiques and De Hiroshima à Fukushima, about Doctor Hida, doctor who survived the Hiroshima bomb; Trésor vivant, on a Japanese kimono painter; Zones grises, which was already investigating the figure of the father, between personal history and history of the years of occupation.

Alain Cabantous & François Walter LES TENTATIONS DE LA CHAIR

(Temptations of the Flesh: Virginity and Chastity from the 16th to the 21st Century)

Payot Rivages, February-20, 416 pages

à This remarkable overview provides an exploration over an extended period of time of the wide range of practices covered in the west by two terms that are often mistakenly used interchangeably, and are more complex than they might seem at first glance.

à From the hymen, an unreliable proof of virginity, to the misbehavior of priests who take a vow of celibacy, from the continence imposed on the newly married until the 17th century to the first “sex strike” promoted in the late 19th, you’ll learn everything there is to know about our difficult relationship to sexuality.

A cultural history spanning five centuries that explores our relationship to sexuality and the impact of male fantasies on the female condition.

Although they had seemed to have become bygone notions since the “sexual revolution”ofthe 1960s-1990s, virginity and chastity have actually been undergoing a huge revival. Both individuals and groups have established them as their life goal, without necessarily basing it on religious belief. Numer- ous health-centered websites extol the “advantages of abstinence,” even for couples. And around the Western world, despite a hyper-sexualized society, the “No Sex” movement has been booming.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Alain Cabantous, is an emeritus professor of history at Paris University 1, and François Walter, honorary professor of history at the University of Geneva. This is those two eminent historians of sensibilities and mentalities’ second book published by Payot, after NOËL. UNE SI LONGUE HISTOIRE... in 2016.

Guy Bechtel LA SORCIÈRE ET L'OCCIDENT

(A History of Witches) Plon, November-19, 1272 pages

à The title of reference on the true story of witches and the West, repeatedly cited by Mona Chollet in her recent best-selling “Witches”.

Who were the witches, or so-called? Did they really cast spells? Did they inhabit the cities, the countryside? Were they all elderly women? Why, especially, after having tolerated them for long years, were they killed one day? These questions have always puzzled historians, who willingly left the subject to novelists.

Over the past twenty years, there have been considerable discoveries about the life and death of witches and about their distribution in Europe - more than half of them were burned in less than sixty years in a very limited region (roughly the south and the east the Holy Empire, from Lorraine to Westphalia) - made it possible to better situate the problem.

The massive liquidation of witches around 1600 in west-central Europe was less the last murder in the Middle Ages than the first of modern times. Seen from the broad perspective of the author, it is linked to the emergence of the religious and social modernity of the continent, a phenomenon of exclusion among others in a vast history of persecution that has not stopped producing alleged ethnic or political purifications.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Guy Bechtel, doctor of history has published many books for a wide audience such as ARCELSE (1970), L’AFFAIRE GAUFRIDY (1972), 1907, LA GRANDE RÉVOLTE DU MIDI (1976), GUTENBERG ET L’INVENTION DE L’IMPRIMERIE (1992).

When power is measured by the ability to demand the impossible in terms of time, a new form of psychic violence is established which results in unbearable mental stress. NATURE

François Sarano RÉCONCILIER LES HOMMES AVEC LA VIE

SAUVAGE (Reconciling Men and Wildlife)

Actes Sud, January-20, 240 pages

An extensive interview about a life in the ocean depths, thoughts and experiences: it is only in contact with wildlife, nature untamed, that Homo will can finally become Sapiens and live in society in peace.

François Sarano started his career far from the oceans and the animal world, closer to rocks and men. The call of the wide-open sea and his love of deep-sea diving however proved too strong for him and he went to study for a doctorate in oceanography and became a professional diver. One day in 1985, his life changed when he met Jacques-Yves Cousteau. Suddenly he found himself on board Cousteau’s Calypso as its scientific advisor and, over thirteen years, worked on over twenty missions with the renowned deep-sea explorer. In his work, wildlife within the ocean depths becomes a source of wisdom, reflection, philosophy and harmony.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: François Sarano is a doctor in oceanography, a professional diver, the expedition leader of le Calypso project, research director of the Deep Ocean Odyssey research program and cofounder of the Longitude 181 association. He was scientific consultant for Jacques Perrin and Jacques Cluzaud’s movie, Oceans. He has written a number of books about whales and the ocean, including RÉFLEXIONS SUR 40 ANS D’OBSERVATIONS SOUS-MARINES (Gap edition, 2011), CHERCHE ET TROUVE OCÉANS (Seuil jeunesse, avril 2007), OCÉANS. Anne-France Dautheville MISCELLANNÉES DES FLEURS

(Miscellaneous Flowers) Buchet Chastel, March-20, 144 pages

à The stunning illustrations and lively layout make reading this book a real pleasure.

This anthology, a veritable cabinet of curiosity for flowers, contains nearly 250 anecdotes that range from serious to playful, scientific to practical, and useful to frivolous… but are always both enchanting and informative. Readers can skip from one interesting tidbit to the next, in any order they please.

Do you know when the first flower appeared? Where does the frangipani shrub’s name come from? How do orchids attract bees? Why did Victoria regia, a giant water lily from the Amazon rainforest that is sturdy enough for a child to sit on become the star of the first World’s Fair, in 1851? What legend hides behind an almond tree? What colors do flowers count on to attract pollinators?

This book contains nearly 250 articles, anecdotes, myths and legends about flowers. We learn about the existence of punishments for plants and naps for bees. We’ll run into Pliny the Elder, Malherbe, Arcimboldo, Darwin, Napoleon I, Cleopatra and others. We’ll find out what tubers, sepals and stigmas are.

Ranging from serious to playful, scientific to practical, useful to frivolous – but always enchanting – these surprising stories are like an invitation on a journey, and can be dipped into at will.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Anne-France Dautheville is a journalist and a writer. She has traveled the world by motorcycle on her own: her travels and the information she gleans from gardeners everywhere she goes have inspired her articles and books. APPLIED POP CULTURE

Marianne Chaillan ILS VÉCURENT PHILOSOPHES ET FIRENT

BEAUCOUP D'HEUREUX (They Lived as Philosophers and Made A Lot of People

Happy) Équateurs, Octobre-18, 224 pages

à Rights sold in: Japan (Kanki).

à 10,000 copies sold in France.

à This small and entertaining book shows that philosophy is not an intellectual discipline and can be seen everywhere in popular culture.

à A perfect way to practice philosophy while rewatching your favorite movies !

In this enlightening and accessible book, Marianne Chaillan explores Disney movies through the lens of philosophy.

From Snow White to Frozen or Zootopia, the Disney-Pixar universe is a provider of dreams and magic for young and old alike. Is it only regressive joy ? Many scholars proved the values of the tales inspiring many Disney movies. But what if the magic also came from a purely philosophical reading of these films? When we set upon discovering their philosophy, we find golden mines! With Aladdin, we can ponder what is the best thing to ask the Genie for. Or, more precisely, what are the conditions for happiness. In The Lion King, we initiate ourselves to the Tao by singing «Hakuna Matata». We encounter Montaigne and his reflexions about cannibalists in Pocahontas. In The Jungle Book, we wonder what is the role of the other in the making of the self. Wall-E allows us to study the robots : can they think or have feelings? Plato is at the heart of Atlantis. One Hundred and One Dalmatians initiates us to animal ethics. Maleficent, the villain from Sleeping Beauty, makes us question the roots of evil. Frozen guides us toward the Sartrian philosophy of freedom.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Marianne Chaillan teaches philosophy. She is the author of Harry Potter at the school of philosophy and The Ultimate Game of Thrones and Philosophy (Open Court, 2016).

“A great book to explain to our children that behind every Disney movie there is philosophy.” Europe 1

“An original initiation to philosophy.” Le Monde

“Marienne Chaillan shows how much entertainment and philosophy are linked.” Libération

Jean-Victor Blanc POP & PSY

(Using Pop Culture in Psychiatry) Plon, Octobre-19, 181 pages

à As a young psychiatrist used to see a lot of Millennials amongst his patients, Dr. Blanc includes pop-cultural reference in his practice, making his misunderstood field more accessible to a wide audience.

à Both pop and serious, scientific and entertaining, Dr. Jean-Victor Blanc focused his personal research on the struggle against the discrimination that people with mental disorders still face.

In this veritable pop guide to modern psychiatry (and vice versa), Dr. Jean-Michel Blanc sheds new light on key pathologies and describes mental health in a more positive way, one that corresponds more closely to his daily medical practice. When pop stars and TV shows help us understand mental disorders better…

The representation of psychological disorders in popular culture is both erroneous and paradoxical. On the one hand, troubled stars’ disorders have a certain power of fascination (Britney Spears’s popularity was never as high as when she shaved her head in front of a horde of paparazzi), and people with mental disorders are popular subjects in books, films and TV shows. On the other, those disorders inspire fear, and their often terrifying representations in art are taken at face value.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: A psychiatrist in Paris, Jean-Victor Blanc specializes in addictions among Millennials, and patients with bipolar disorder. A huge fan of pop culture, he gives conferences on “Pop Culture and Psychiatry” whose goal is to reduce the stigma surrounding mental disorders.

J.-D. Nasio TOUT LE MONDE PEUT-IL TOMBER EN

DÉPRESSION ? (A Different Way to Treat Depression)

Payot Rivages, April-20, 192 pages

A novel explanation of the causes of depression and a surprising new cure.

Depression doesn’t happen all at once; it’s the result of a slow process in which the past invades the present. The causes are both an emotional shock and a predisposition for depression. In this instance, predisposition means that the person had experienced trauma in their childhood (abandonment, child abuse, or sexual abuse) and that they have taken shelter in a world of illusion that makes them more susceptible to falling apart. So depression is tied to the loss of an illusion. How can it be treated? Nasio explains his unique graphic-interpretation method that allows patients to learn to think about themselves in less self-deprecating ways than brooding over their earlier failures.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: A psychiatrist and psychoanalyst with over 50 years of analytic experience, J.-D. Nasio is one of the most renowned popular-science writers in the field of psychoanalysis. He has written over 30 books, many of which have become classics, and have been translated into over a dozen language.

Dr Bruno Bubos LES ÂGES CLANDESTINS

(Why People Don’t Always Act their Age) Payot Rivages, January-20, 240 pages

Acting younger than your age, or older, or seeming to be ageless... We are like puppets in the hands of “underground” ages that can turn into handicaps. This book reveals a problem that is far more complex than it might seem at first glance.

Do we act our age? Should we act our age? How can we (not) act our age? In western society, those questions have taken on greater importance over the last twenty years. Hidden beneath our “real” or “official” age – the one on our birth certificates – are unofficial, “underground” ages that we can’t always control. We feel like teens again when we’re at a party, or we romp like kids at the beach. Those “emotional crystallizations” create a reservoir of specific sensations and emotional states that can constrain us, create issues, or even poison our existences (creating issues in our relationships and sexuality, addictions, eating disorders and more). How can we recognize and reign in those crystallizations in order to use them for our own good?

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Dr. Bruno Dubos is a psychiatrist and a hypnotherapist who has been practicing Ericksonian hypnosis for 25 years. He defined the concept of underground ages. As a member of the European Society of Hypnosis (ESH), the International Society of Hypnosis (ISH) and the Confédération francophone d’hypnose et de thérapie brève (CFHTB), he has worked in Rennes and taught at the University of Nantes.

Caroline Harris THE M-WORD

(Reclaiming the Menopause Conversation) The History Press, October 2020, 288 pages

à Menopause is a ‘trending’ topic due to women such as Gwyneth Paltrow, Viola Davis and Patsy Kensit speaking out • The ‘menopause market’ is set to be worth $5.28 billion by 2023

à The first collection of essays on the menopause, covering an extraordinary breadth and depth of issues surrounding the menopause

à This book marks a vital contribution to the conversation surrounding the menopause

Can we finally say the M-word out loud? A stunning collection of diverse voices shapes a new conversation about the menopause

The menopause has for so long been one of the many taboos surrounding the female body – something we simply don’t talk about. Yet, it is transformational for each and every woman who goes through it, marking a fundamental change in their lives. For some it comes with many challenges, for others it heralds a shift in the way they see themselves and the way in which they wish to be seen. For many, it marks a midway point on their journey.

Globally, there are diverse perceptions of a woman’s midlife – from the stereotyped sweaty, hot-flush-beleaguered female to the liberated cougar; the infertile ‘crone’ to the wise woman – but the reality of the experience is rarely shared, leading to uncertainty, confusion and sometimes even shame. The women in this book change that – a diverse range of original voices discuss the menopause’s influence on their bodies, their relationships, their lives at work and at home, and their place in the world. They openly talk about their symptoms and experiences, surgical approaches and science, sex and gender, motherhood and daughterhood, grief and loss, creativity and awakenings, prejudice and position, culture and context, and what it means to be ‘a woman’.

They shape a new courageous conversation about how we can and should view the menopause and a woman’s midlife.
