About DuPontFor over 40 years, DuPont Nomex and Kevlar have been committed to providing material solutions that help improve the safety of workersfrom industrial workers to EMTs and firefighters. Together We Rise to Any Challenge was created to help document the life-saving stories of firefighters through a combination of videotaped interviews and individual portraits.

For maximum protection against fires, the body must be covered as completely as possible with flame-resistant protective clothing. This requires long pants and long sleeves, making for hot work in warm and humid climates. Understandably, industrial workers may be concerned about potential heat stress when wearing protective apparel. Learn more about the factors that can lead to heat stress, and how DuPont brands can help offer comfort and protection in protective garments.

Fires are unpredictable situations can change in an instant with temperatures reaching 1900 degrees F, leaving workers vulnerable to serious injury. So for hazards like flash fire and pool fire, DuPont created Nomex III A. A blend of 93% Nomex with 5% Kevlar and 2% antistatic fiber, this innovative fabric helps minimize break-open, and expands to form a stable and inert barrier between the fire and skin. This gives wearers the valuable seconds they need to escape from the hazard.

But comfort and fit are also an essential part of safety. In collaboration with manufacturers and mills, DuPont strives to help them make significant fabric improvements -- providing lighter weights, wicking finishes, and breathability.

Need for Inherent Fire Resistance Clothing like DuPont NomexEvery year, hundreds of industrial workers are killed or seriously injured by industrial fires or electric arcs. Many of these injuries could have been minimized or avoided if workers had been wearing flame-resistant garments. Fires are unpredictable. They can last for 3, 4, and 5 seconds or longer. A matter of seconds can mean the difference between minor burns and life-threatening injuries. A flame-resistant garment helps protect the wearer from industrial fires and electric arcs; it also provides valuable seconds for escape. DuPont Leader in Flame-Resistant Protection For more than 40 years, protective apparel made from DuPont Nomex brand fiber has helped provide superior thermal protection from flames, industrial fires and electric arcs. The unique molecular structure of Nomex makes it inherently flame resistant. Manufacturers use Nomex in their garments to help protect workers in the electric utility, industrial electric and petrochemical industries. Professional firefighters, race car drivers, U.S. military personnel and NASA astronauts also wear garments of Nomex fibers.

Excellent Performances:Nomex fiber helps garment to provide outstanding performance :

Is inherently flame resistant Does not burn or melt and drip. Provides permanent protection that wont wash out or wear away. Helps minimize break-open and maintains a stable, inert barrier between the fire/arc and skin, helping to protect the wearer from direct exposure. Forms a tough, protective char when exposed to flame. Meets the ASTM F-1506 standard for workers apparel as protection from electric arc exposure. Certified to NFPA 2112

Nomex appearance retention:Shrinkage is an important factor to consider when evaluating garment durability, comfort, and appearance. In a laboratory test, fabrics of Nomex fire-resistant fiber experienced low shrinkage, and then maintained their size and shape through many subsequent launderings.Nomex ease of care:In addition, garments made of Nomex have a better color-fastness and appearance retention versus FRT cotton/nylon, with superior professional appearance throughout the lifecycle of the garment. And they rarely need pressing; they come out of the dryer ready to wear, in contrast to FRT cotton garments, which wrinkle significantly after washing and drying.Nomex thermal performance:The inherent flame resistance of Nomex thermal technology means protection is not washed out or worn away. Nomex for thermal protection, superior lifecycle and durability:Garments made withflame resistantNomex fiber are extremely durable and resist abrasion and tears. Theyre also an excellent value, lasting three to five times longer than other standard and protective fabrics, including 100% cotton and flame-retardant treated (FRT) cotton. In lease, rental, and purchase programs, for example, the excellent wear life of garments of Nomex can help contribute to bottom-line savings.

Type 462 NOMEX (NOMEXIIIA) Type 462 staple of NOMEX is a blend of NOMEX and KEVLAR brand fibers and P-140, a proprietary static dissipative fiber. When converted to fabric it is known commercially as NOMEX IIIA and is used for thermal protective apparel. It offers all the features of Type 455 staple plus a higher level of static dissipation in fabric form. The P-140 fiber dissipates static generated from fabric-to-fabric and fabric-to-surface rubbing, minimizes the contribution of clothing to static hazards and reduces apparent electric field strength and nuisance static. The staple is dye mergeable and can be package dyed as yarn for use in knit goods or sewing threads, or piece dyed as fabric for civilian protective apparel. Except for the static dissipative properties of NOMEX IIIA, all other properties are essentially the same as for NOMEX III. Properties reported in this guide should be considered applicable to both, unless a specific difference is noted in the text.

A typical Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC) curve for Type 462 (Figure 2.6) shows the change in energy input vs. temperature. It does not show a defined melting point for NOMEX. The inflection in the curve shown at 491.5F (255.3C) represents the melting point of the P140 static dissipative fiber in Type 462. The DSC curves for Type 450 and 455 NOMEX will be similar, but without the P140 inflection at 491.5F (255.3C).

NOMEX IIIA incorporates P-140 to dissipate static generated from fabric-to-fabric and fabric-to-surface rubbing. This minimizes the contribution of clothing to static charge buildup on the human body, reduces the apparent electric field strength on the fabric, and reduces nuisance static, thus increasing garment comfort. P-140 filaments consist of a carbon core and insulating sheath, which through induction attracts static charges from the fabric until their intensity becomes sufficient to ionize the surrounding air molecules, thus reducing the accumulated static charge. Wearing garments of NOMEX IIIA does not eliminate the need to follow proper electrostatic safety procedures, including grounding of personnel and equipment in hazardous areas where ignitable gases may be present, or where static may affect electronic instruments.
