Volume 4 – April 2018
Nomads News Official Newsletter of Nomads Golf Club Perth Western Australia
The ink was scarcely dry on the March issue of Nomads News and
here we are, plugging away at the April issue.
Due to prior arrangements, I sadly missed the game at Wanneroo
but I have it on good authority that the weather was excellent (and
by a look at the scores, not too shabby a day either.
We had the privilege of hosting Richard Plumb (Immediate Past
President of Nomads South Africa and WP Nomads member) and his
son, Grant at Wanneroo.
Captain Hector also handed over the proceeds of the 2017 Charity
Day to Paul McCormack, an ambassador of The Black Dog Institute.
(see more on this in the Captain’s Corner)
A couple of issues relating to late withdrawals have turned around
and bitten us. Discussions around this can be found in Shooting From
The Lip on Pg. 3 of this issue.
With our 5th Anniversary celebrations just around the corner, B and
his team are busy crossing T’s and dotting I’s to ensure two
memorable events on our calendar.
Ken Llloyd and The “Fr”-editor, locally based Nationals Coordinators
have sent out EOI’s to those interested in participating in the 10th
Australian Nationals Tournament in October. More on this on pg.15

HARTFIELD –

Captain’s Corner
Today was a glorious day for golf, but also a very special day for us as the Nomads Golf Club (Perth) as
we received the thanks from Paul McCormack, an ambassador of the Black Dog Institute for our
donation of $6,872.74 that we raised at our charity day in 2017, thanks to the efforts of my committee,
our club and friends of Nomads.
Today, we have given effect to one of our main objectives as Nomads namely, to generate funds for
those who are less fortunate than us by making our humble donation. We wish the Black Dog Institute
all the best with the wonderful work that it does for such an important cause, mental health.
Thanks again to everyone who supported our charity day and we hope to see you at our 2018 charity
day.
It was my pleasure to induct Gary Wilmot into the Nomads family. Welcome Gary, may your stay with
Nomads be long and fruitful
Fellow Nomads, I am pleased to advise that membership renewals for 2018 are now complete and we
are now in a position to pay over capitation fees to Natex over the next few weeks. Thank you to those
who have renewed and to those who have taken (I hope), a short hiatus away from Nomads, enjoy the
break and we hope to see you back in the future.
Various sub-committees are hard at work finalising, amongst others, our 5th Anniversary Dinner & Game
in July, 10th Australian Nomads Nationals in October and 2018 Charity Day in November. I urge you to
become a part of this, embrace the hard work these folks are putting into their, already full working
days, and support these events.
That’s All Folks, see you at Hartfield, May 6th
Hector
SHOOTING FROM THE LIP………..
“They say actions have consequences and every action has a reaction – I have it on good
authority that the club has been billed for the additional carts brought in especially for the NvS
match that had to be cancelled and it gets worse…..at our last game at Wanneroo we, as a
club, got charged the full player fee for the day instead of the game fee quoted. How do we
recover from this? Do we cut our losses or do we attempt to recover the loss by some ways”
Ed’s response – Thanks for raising your concerns. This issue will receive the committees’ full
attention at their next meeting.
“Thanks Mr “Fr”-Editor for another great issue of Nomads News. Each month’s edition just
gets better and better and I eagerly await the next issue I do, however, have a
question…..How many Perth Nomads actually read the newsletter or, for interest sake, follow
the Facebook page?”
Ed’s response – Thank you for your kind words. As far as I know most Perth Nomads read
Nomads News and we have a large following from other Nomads clubs around the country as
well as in Southern Africa. Our Facebook page is followed by around 180 people many of
which aren’t even Nomads members so it is pleasing to see that we’re being followed and
that our message is getting across.
PS. We are looking into giving Nomads News a facelift in the not too distant future.
Have your say and use this column to have your say (and be heard), vent your spleen, have a hissy fit, spit your dummy,

GOLF QUIPS
golf.ing, a duffer’s dictionary by Henry Beard & Roy McKie,
continued……..
takeaway – The initial stage of the backswing when any chance of
hitting decent shot is removed entirely.
tap-in – A putt short enough to lip out with a one-handed stroke or
rocket past the hole with a left-handed slap with the back of the
putter.
target line – An imaginary line from a player’s lie to the target which
the ball would follow if an imaginary golfer hit it.
tee – Small wooden peg on which the ball is placed for a drive from
the teeing ground. The condition of the tee after the shot provides an
indication of whether or not the ball was hit correctly. If the tee flips
backwards and lands in one piece a few inches behind the place
where it was inserted into the turf, the ball was probably hit well. If the
tee breaks into three or more pieces, is driven deeper than two inches
into the ground, travels further than the ball, or catches fire, it
probably wasn’t.
teeing ground – A clearly defined rectangular are 2 club-lengths in
depth from where the player hit the shot 20 to 30 club-lengths directly
forward or 5 to 10 flub-lengths to either side.
tee-off – To drive a ball off the tee. Players who have made their
drives off a tee are said to have teed off, but at this point it is almost
always correct to say they are teed off.
tempo – The rhythm or timing of a swing. Most skilled golfers pace their
swings with a deliberate count of “one-and-two”; most hackers pace
their swings with an immediate count of “TWO!”
Texas wedge – Slang term for a putter used to hit a low, running shot
from well off the green. Similar terms are “Florida Putter” for a driver
used to hit a weak, half-topped shot that doesn’t reach the Ladies’
Tee, and the “Myrtle Beach Driving Iron” for a skulled sand wedge that
sends a ball out of a bunker and into the middle of an adjacent
fairway.
tight lie – Term for a situation in which the ball comes to rest on very
short grass or a bld spot or hardpan, a poition also known as a “close
lie”, an “original lie”, a “preliminary lie”, a “previous lie”, or a “former
lie”,
tip – a free piece of advice offered by a fellow player, which is the
only thing in the entire game of golf that is worth exactly as much as
you paid for it
