About this document

1 About this documentPurpose

This document describes how to commission Nokia UltraSite EDGE Base Station(BTS).

Contents

The document gives detailed instructions on how to use Nokia SiteWizardapplications for commissioning the BTS (Chapter 2).

The document contains the following information:

• BTS HW configuration

• transmission configuration (FXC transmission units are configured withNokia UltraSite EDGE BTS Hub Manager, FC transmission unit isconfigured within the Commissioning Wizard in BTS Manager)

• BTS commissioning

• commissioning reports

• troubleshooting and fault reporting.

Read this document when starting commissioning of Nokia UltraSite EDGEBTS.

1.1 Nokia SiteWizard

Contents

Nokia SiteWizard is an application package for the commissioning andmaintenance of Nokia UltraSite and MetroSite GSM base stations. The CD-ROMcontains manager applications for the BTS and related transmission equipment ona BTS site.

The following list displays the applications related to Nokia UltraSite EDGEBTS:

• Nokia BTS Manager

• Nokia UltraSite BTS Hub Manager

• Nokia RRI Manager

• Nokia E1/T1 Manager

• Nokia BTS HW Configurator

• Nokia Hopper Manager

• Nokia SCF Editor

Only BTS HW Configurator, UltraSite BTS Hub Manager and BTS Manager aredirectly used in the commissioning.

Only one application can be communicating with the BTS at a time. Close BTSHW Configurator before starting UltraSite BTS Hub Manager, and close HubManager before starting BTS Manager.

Installation

The installation program of Nokia SiteWizard installs the applications on the PChard disk and creates the Nokia Applications submenu in the Start | Programsmenu in Windows. The applications can be launched from this menu. For moreinformation on the installation, refer to the instructions on the Nokia SiteWizardCD-ROM case.

1.2 General commissioning notes

Nokia recommends that you have basic knowledge of base station systems andequipment. Pay careful attention to all warnings and cautions.

It is assumed here that the user knows how to use Windows NT4.0, Windows95or Windows98 software.

The manual commissioning procedures assume that the physical installation ofthe BTS (units, cabling, antennas, radios) is complete before commissioning isstarted.

Caution

The different phases of the commissioning (HW configuration, FXC transmissionand BTS commissioning) generate a report. The extensions are: .hwr for HWconfiguration report, .cmr for transmission configuration report and .rpt for BTScommissioning report. It is recommended that you use the same filename for thedifferent reports of the same site.

Nokia recommends only properly trained and authorised personnel performinstallation, cabling, commissioning, and maintenance operations on any NokiaBTS.

1.3 Using Help

Nokia BTS Manager and related node manager software have a convenient,context-sensitive online Help facility.

To get help

• press F1

• click the Help button on the toolbar

• choose one of the Help menu commands or

• click the Help button in any dialog box.

In the Help Topics window you can see a set of tabbed pages: Contents, Index andFind.

Contents

The Contents page displays a list of topics organized in books by category.

Index

The Index page lists keywords in alphabetical order through which differenttopics can be reached.

Find

The Find page provides a full-text search functionality that allows you to searchfor any word or phrase in the Help file.

To exit Help, press ESC or ALT+F4.

2 Manual commissioningNokia UltraSite EDGE BTS is commissioned manually. The sections belowprovide detailed information on how to commission Nokia UltraSite EDGE BTS.

The BTS is commissioned with BTS HW Configurator, UltraSite BTS HubManager (if there are FXC units in the configuration), BTS Manager (includes FCE1/T1 transmission unit configuration). The commissioning procedure isillustrated in Figure 1.

It is necessary to connect a Frequency counter to the BOI 13 MHz test port andpower on the frequency counter before beginning the commissioning procedure.This enables the counter time to warm up and thus get accurate measurements.

2.1 Creating new HW configuration

HW configuration is defined with BTS HW Configurator.

The quickest way to create a new BTS HW configuration is to run the Wizard(Configuration | Wizard). The Wizard takes you through the task sequence in thecorrect order and provides instructions for each task. Additional information isavailable through the Help button.

If there is no predefined HW configuration file available for the BTS, you cancreate the configuration with the Create New Configuration option in the Wizard.Creating a new configuration with the Wizard requires no BTS connection, soyou can create the configuration in advance and save it as an .hwc file.

Define new BTS configuration information as follows:

1. Choose Nokia BTS HW Configurator from the Nokia Applicationssubmenu in the Start | Programs menu in Windows.

2. Choose the Wizard command on the Configuration menu.

3. Select the Create New Configuration option and click Next (see Figure2).

4. Select < New > from sector configuration list and common network typefrom the drop down list, or click Modify if you want to change the networktype of individual TSx units (see Figure 3 and Figure 4).

Alternatively, you can select one of the predefined configurations from thelist, to be modified further.

5. Define TSx configuration by first selecting the TSx unit from the list andthen selecting the basic configuration for the selected TSx unit fromConfiguration Type drop-down list. Then click Set for each selected TSxunit. Click Next to continue (see Figure 5).

There are four configuration types to select from:

• Bypass with DDU stands for one TSx unit connecting to a DDU half

• 2-way DDU stands for two TSx units connecting to a DDU half

• 4-way DDU stands for four TSx units connecting to a DDU half

• RTC stands for six TSx units RTC

6. Define RX diversity for each TSx unit. Select the TSx unit from the list.Select the combiner unit for the selected TSx unit from the drop-down list.Click Set to update the defined cabling configuration. Click Next tocontinue (see Figure 6).

7. Define antenna settings. If all antennas use High gain MHAs and/or VSWRmonitoring, select the corresponding options in the Properties for AllConnected Antennas group box. Select an antenna in the Antennas listand select a DVx or RTx unit for the selected antenna from the DVx/RTxlist. Update the defined antenna information to the configuration byclicking Set. Click Next (see Figure 7).

8. The final Wizard page contains a report of the new configuration (seeFigure 8). The configuration can be modified manually via propertiespages, after the Wizard is closed.

Click Finish to exit the Wizard.

Before saving the new configuration to a file, you can manually make changes tothe unit properties, if necessary.

Save the new configuration to hard drive from the File menu or send theconfiguration information to the BTS from the BTS menu using Send BTSConfiguration command.

Next, proceed with the transmission configuration (Section 2.3).

2.2 Using existing HW configuration

HW configuration information is defined with BTS HW Configurator. Thefollowing procedure requires a predefined HW configuration file (with file nameextension .hwc). Refer to Chapter 2.1.

Creating a new configuration with the Wizard requires no BTS connection, soyou can create the configuration in advance and save it as an .hwc file. A BTSHW configuration file (Basic Configs.hwc) with basic UltraSite BTSconfigurations is delivered with Nokia BTS HW Configurator. You can use theconfigurations as such, if possible, or you can modify them to suit your purposes.

Define BTS configuration information as follows:

1. Choose Nokia BTS HW Configurator from the Nokia Applicationssubmenu in the Start | Programs menu in Windows.

2. Choose the Wizard command on the Configuration menu.

3. Select the Check BTS Configuration and Update BTS option and clickNext (see Figure 9).

4. Select the BTS to be configured. The Wizard automatically displays theBTS HW configuration file that was used last. If the configuration youwant is not in the list, click Browse to load the appropriate .hwc file (seeFigure 10).

Click Next.

If BTS connection is not enabled, BTS HW Configurator asks if you want toactivate it. BTS connection requires that the LMP cable is connected from the PCto the BTS. For information about the LMP cable, see Appendix A.

5. Check that the configuration information is correct. The BTS ConnectionStatus list displays information about the BTS connection and the state ofthe BCF (see Figure 11). Click Next when the BCF is in the correct state.

6. Check miscellaneous information concerning the BTS cabinet type, clocksynchronization and the LTEs (Line Terminal Equipment) in the SiteSupport cabinet (see Figure 12). Click Next.

7. Check the BB2 cross-connections to the TSxs (see Figure 13). Click Next.

If there are units that have not been detected automatically, click Autodetect. TheBCF needs to be in the ‘BCF Commissioning‘ state. You can select the ViewAutodetected Units option to see the autodetected units in the Graphical view inBTS HW Configurator.

If a TSx unit does not exist in the configuration, the unit will be in brackets andgreyed out.

8. Check the TX, RX main and RX diversity cable connections for TRX1 -TRX12 (see Figure 14). Click Next.

Clicking a cabling option in the list displays the selected cabling in theGraphical view on the left. The View Settings group box specifies theappearance of the Graphical view: you can show/hide wideband andmulticoupler units and non-active cabling.

9. Check antenna unit connections (see Figure 15). To enable VSWRmonitoring for an antenna, select the antenna from the list and then selectthe VSWR Monitoring Enabled option. Clicking an antenna in the list alsodisplays the corresponding antenna cable in the Graphical view.

If the MHA type is High gain, you can also change attenuation values.

Click Next.

10. Click Import to open the HW information file (.hwi) (see Figure 16). ClickNext.

Passive unit information is not needed to make the BTS operational. For moreinformation on passive units, refer to Section 2.2.1.

11. Click Finish to save the configuration information in the BTS (see Figure17).

If you want to save the configuration report to a file, enter the path andfilename in the Save As field or click Browse to specify the location andfilename.

12. Exit BTS HW Configurator.

Next, proceed with the transmission configuration (see Section 2.3).

2.2.1 Hardware information file

The Passive Units view in BTS HW Configurator allows you to enter informationconcerning all units that are not autodetected. This information includes part andserial numbers. This information is not required during commissioning and is notneeded to get the BTS operational. It is possible to enter and update thisinformation any time before, during, and after commissioning.

Note

You can enter passive unit information with BTS HW Configurator off-line andon-line. A barcode reader can also be used to scan the part and serial numbers offstickers on the units. The SW recognizes the part number and identifies the unittype. One problem is that using a barcode reader with the PC requires the use ofone serial port and many laptop computers have only one serial port. In this case,BTS HW Configurator must be used off-line to scan in the part and serialnumbers. Once this is completed and the information is saved to a file, thehardware information file (.hwi) can be downloaded to the BTS.

If you are to change the HW configuration in any way after the BTScommissioning has been finished, you would have to perform a BCF reset inorder to make the changes active.

2.3 FXC transmission unit configuration

The transmission of the BTS and its Hub node must be configured and testedduring the commissioning with Nokia UltraSite BTS Hub Manager.

FXC transmission units can be commissioned manually or commissioned basedon a node file. Manual commissioning is described in section 2.3.1.Commissioning based on a node file is described in section 2.3.2.

If there is an FC E1/T1 transmission unit in the BTS configuration, that unit isconfigured in the Commissioning Wizard in BTS Manager (see 2.4).

2.3.1 Manual FXC unit configuration

To access the Hub node:

1. Choose Nokia UltraSite BTS Manager on the Nokia Applicationssubmenu on the Start | Programs menu in Windows.

Wait until the BTS Manager has properly started and only then move on tothe next step.

2. Start Nokia UltraSite BTS Hub Manager from the BTS Manager’s Toolsmenu.

The equipment view opens automatically when the connection has beenestablished (see Figure 18).

If the connection fails, check the connection speed and LMP cableconnection from Tools | Options | Manager options. You can also try theConnection | Connect... command and enter the connection parameters inthe Connect to Node dialog box. Using the Nokia Connection Tool, referto the application’s online Help.

3. Right-click on a unit in the Equipment view and choose Install All fromthe pop-up menu.

2.3.1.1 Line interface settings

The line interface settings available for each transmission unit depend on the typeof the unit: FXC E1(/T1) or FXC RRI.

Define FXC E1(/T1) LIF settings as follows:

1. Click the appropriate FXC E1(/T1) unit in the Equipment view in NokiaUltraSite BTS Hub Manager. A unit-specific menu appears on the menubar.

2. Choose LIF Settings on the FXC E1/T1 menu. The LIF Settings dialogbox appears (see Figure 19).

3. Select the tab for the line interface you want (LIF1 - LIF4).

4. Select the Interface in Use option, if the interface will be used. If theinterface is not in use, deselect this option and proceed to the settings ofanother interface (step 3).

5. You can type a name for the interface in the Interface Name field.

6. Select the mode from the Interface Mode list.

7. If you selected the E1 75 ohm interface mode or the E1 120 ohm interfacemode, you need to define the TS0 fixed bits. TS0 fixed bits from 1 to 3 arereserved for CRC and frame locking. Bits from 4 to 8 are used for alarmsand data transfer in national connections.

Select the CRC in Use option the way it is defined at the BSC.

8. If you selected the T1 100 ohm interface mode, define the Framing Format,Line Code and T1 Interface Type settings (see Figure 20).

9. Click Apply to accept the changes for the selected LIF tab. The Applybutton is disabled if you made no changes.

10. If necessary, check or modify the settings for the other line interfaces asdescribed in steps 1 - 10.

11. Click OK to accept the changes.

12. Repeat steps 1 - 12 for all other FXC E1(/T1) transmission units in theconfiguration.

Define FXC RRI settings as follows:

1. Click the appropriate FXC RRI unit in the Equipment view in NokiaUltraSite BTS Hub Manager. A unit-specific menu appears on the menubar.

2. Choose the Settings | Unit command on the FXC RRI menu. The Settingsdialog box appears (see Figure 21).

3. Select the tab for the FB interface you want (Flexbus1-2).

4. Select the In Use option, if the interface will be used. If the interface is notin use, deselect this option and proceed to the settings of another interface(step 3).

5. Select the capacity for the interface (2 - 16 x 2Mb).

6. Select the Power On option if the RRI unit is directly connected to anoutdoor unit (radio).

The Power On setting should not be used when two RRI units are connectedtogether with a Flexbus cable. If power is on in such a case, the units could bedamaged.

7. Click Apply to accept the changes for the selected interface tab. The Applybutton is disabled if you made no changes.

8. If necessary, check or modify the settings for the other Flexbus interface asdescribed in steps 1 - 7.

9. Click the Platform Interface tab to define settings for the platforminterfaces. (See Figure 22)

2.3.1.2 Radio configuration

If there are FXC RRI transmission units in the configuration, you also need toconfigure the outdoor units (Nokia FlexiHopper or Nokia MetroHoppermicrowave radios) connected to the RRI units. For more information on thecommissioning and maintenance of radio units, refer to Nokia MetroHopper andFlexiHopper user manuals.

If there are no FXC RRI units in the configuration, proceed directly to Section2.3.1.3.

Configuring outdoor units

1. Click a FXC RRI transmission unit in the Equipment view in UltraSiteBTS Hub Manager.

2. Choose Radio Wizard on the FXC RRI menu to launch the Wizard.

3. The Flexbus Settings page displays the type of the indoor unit and theoutdoor units connected to each Flexbus (see Figure 23).

Select the capacity for each outdoor unit from the Capacity list and selectthe In Use option for each Flexbus you want to use. At least one outdoorunit must exist and be enabled (In Use), before you can continue to the nextWizard page.

You can deselect the Commission the Unit option for a Flexbus, if youwant to skip the commissioning of a radio for some reason (e.g. far end notready).

With Nokia MetroHopper outdoor unit, the capacity is fixed to 4 x 2 Mbit/s.

Click Next to continue.

4. The Flexbus 1 settings page appears on the screen. The options on the pagedepend on the outdoor unit connected to the interface. The settings for theFlexiHopper outdoor unit are presented in Figure 24.

The Temporary Hop ID on the MetroHopper General Settings page must be thesame for both the master and slave terminal.

Select either the Manual or Automatic option for Channel Selection on theMetroHopper General Settings page. When you click Next, theMetroHopper Channel Selection page appears (see Figure 26).

• If you selected Manual channel selection, select one channel to beused. You can also click Measure to measure the signal strength ofthe selected channels and then select the best channel.

• If you selected Automatic channel selection, the Wizard willautomatically scan the channels to find the far end radio.

Click Next to continue.

5. If necessary, define the Flexbus 2 settings for the outdoor unit as describedin step 4.

6. The Summary of Commissioning Settings page displays the settings youhave defined for commissioning the radio(s) (see Figure 27).

Check that the settings are correct and click Next to start the actualcommissioning procedure.

7. The Monitoring Hop page displays the status of the hops during and afterthe commissioning (see Figure ). The commissioning may take some time,and the Status field displays the message ‘reading status’.The statuschanges to ‘Ready’, if the commissioning was successful. If thecommissioning fails for some reason, the Status field gives a shortdescription of the failure (e.g. ‘Trying... no far end found’). If thecommissioning still fails, refer to Nokia MetroHopper and FlexiHopperuser manuals for more information.

2.3.1.3 Synchronization

Define the node synchronization settings as follows:

1. Choose the Synchronization command on the Configuration menu inNokia UltraSite BTS Hub Manager. The Synchronization dialog boxappears (see Figure 29).

2. Select the RX Clock timing option for Priority 1 and select the unit andinterface that is used for synchronization (coming from uplink direction).

You can define settings for other priorities in the same way.

3. Click OK to accept the changes.

2.3.1.4 Q1 management

Q1 management settings have to be adjusted to enable remote managementthrough the EOC (Embedded Operations Channel).

Setting up the EOC is not mandatory for the commissioning procedure. The BTScan be commissioned and integrated to the network without these settings.

Adjust the Q1 management settings as follows:

1. Choose the Q1 Management command on the Configuration menu inNokia UltraSite BTS Hub Manager. The Q1 Management dialog boxopens.

2. Click the Add button. The Add EOC dialog box opens (see Figure 30).

4. Select the unit and interface to be configured.

5. Select a timeslot for Q1 management.

2.3.1.5 Allocating F(X)C transmission capacity

At this point of the commissioning procedure, you need to allocate BTStransmission capacity on the D-bus. The allocation is made with the TrafficManager, which is a graphical tool that allows you to allocate BTS transmissioncapacity independent of which Nokia UltraSite transmission unit is used (seeFigure 31). You need only to define the unit (e.g. 1 E1/T1), the interface (withFXC units), and the incoming time-slot allocation on the Abis according to thetransmission plan.

In the case of 1.5 MB links (T1), the Traffic Manager automatically reduces thenumber of time slot rows in the table to 24.

The capacity to be used is defined by selecting its signal type (TCHs, TRXSIG,OMUSIG, or TRXSIG on TCHs) and by reserving required time slots and bits.

Allocate transmission capacity as follows:

1. Open Traffic Manager by choosing the Traffic Manager command on theConfiguration menu in Nokia UltraSite BTS Hub Manager.

2. Select the line interface used: Interface 1 - Interface 4 with FXC E1(/T1)and Port 1 - Port 16 with RRI transmission units. There is only Interface 1available for an FC E1/T1 unit, because it has only one line interface.

3. Click the TCHs button and then click in a cell in the Abis timeslotallocation table. Repeat this step to allocate transmission capacity to allTRXs in the BTS configuration.

From here onwards, you have two alternative ways to proceed.

4. Alternative 1. Click the TRXSIG button and then click the first bit in atimeslot in the Abis allocation table. Select the TRX to be defined from thepop-up menu. Select the link speed from the pop-up menu. Repeat for allTRXs in the BTS configuration. Click the OMUSIG button and then clicka cell in the Abis allocation table. Select the link speed from the pop-upmenu.

Alternative 2. Click the TRXSIG on TCHs button and then click the firstbit in a timeslot you reserved for TCHs in Step 3. Select the link speed fromthe pop-up menu. Repeat for all TRXs in the BTS configuration. Click theOMUSIG button and then click a cell in the Abis allocation table. Selectthe link speed from the pop-up menu.

If you want to modify the allocation table at this point, you have to first deleteprior allocations. Click the right mouse button on the cell to be modified anddelete either one signal allocation, all signal allocations or delete all allocationsfor the selected port.

Choosing Delete all while modifying the allocation table, does delete alltransmission capacity allocation from the D-bus without a warning. If youexecute the command by mistake, click Cancel and start the allocating procedureagain.

5. Check that the signal timing (either ‘Normal’ or ‘Satellite’) is correctly set.

6. Click the OK button to send the information to the BTS.

When the link capacity restricts normal signal allocation, you can use the‘TRXSIG on TCHS’ signal type.

The signal types are discussed below in more detail:

OMUSIG

The BTS can have one OMUSIG which allocates 2, 4 or 8 bits in one time slotdepending on the link speed used (16 or 64 kbit/s).

TCHs

The BTS must be allocated at least as many TCHs as there are TRXs installed init (1 - 12). Each TCH allocates 2 contiguous time slots (16 bits) for a single TRXeach of which is marked with the TRX number. The TCHs are numbered from 1to 12 in order of which they are defined.

TRXSIG

The BTS must be allocated at least as many TRXSIGs as there are TRXs installedin it (1 - 12). Each TRXSIG can allocate 2, 4 or 8 bits in one time slot dependingon the link speed used (16, 32 or 64 kbit/s). The TRXSIGs are numbered from 1to 12 in order of which they are entered.

TRXSIG on TCHs

The TRXSIG can be reserved on a traffic channel (TCH) but then up to 4 radiotime slots (8 bits) are lost. The signal type must always start from the first bit ofthe channel.

2.3.1.6 Creating cross-connections

As there is no Cross-connections file available, cross-connections for eachtransmission unit are created with Nokia UltraSite BTS Hub Manager’s cross-connections tool. This FXC transmission unit configuration work includes alsocross-connections on the D-bus.

Cross-connections define how signals are routed from an FXC transmission unitto another transmission unit. Cross-connections are created into banks which areeither active or inactive. The cross-connections in the active banks are in use,whereas those in the inactive banks can be used for creating or editing cross-connections. The procedure below describes how to create bi-directional cross-connections manually.

Create bi-directional cross-connections as follows:

1. Start creating cross-connections by choosing the View command on theCross-connections menu in UltraSite BTS Hub Manager.

2. Open the active bank page. (The number of the active bank is given abovethe cross-connections list view.)

3. Copy the active bank into the inactive bank by choosing the Banks | Copycommand from the Cross-connections menu.

4. Go to the inactive bank.

5. Open the Add Cross-Connection dialog box by right-clicking the mouseand selecting the Add... command. Another way to open the dialog box isto choose the Add command on the Cross-connections | Connectionssubmenu. The Add Cross-connection dialog box appears (see Figure 32).

6. Define the following settings according to the cross-connection plan:

• label, i.e. the name of the new cross-connection (max. 80 characters)

• cross-connection type; in this case the type is ‘bi-directional’

• granularity (with nx64k set also its coefficient n)

7. If you selected a protected cross-connection type in step 4, specify port andcondition settings in the Protection information group box.

8. Click the Tx1/Rx1 button to open the Edit Termination Point view (seeFigure 33).

9. In the Interface tree view, select one of the FXC transmission card’sinterfaces, e.g. Interface 1.

In the timeslot table, the earlier reserved timeslots and bits are indicated by grey,while the selected ones will become blue. (If you have modified your Windowscolour settings, these timeslot colours change accordingly.)

10. Click a cell in the table to define the start bit of the frame.

11. Click OK. The Edit Termination Point dialog box closes.

12. Click the Tx2/Rx2 button to open the Edit Termination Point view.

13. In the Interface tree view, select an interface, e.g. Interface 2.

14. Click a cell in the table to define the start bit of the frame.

15. Click OK. The dialog box closes.

16. Click Apply in the Add Cross-connection dialog box. All settings areloaded but the window remains open.

17. Repeat steps 4 - 14 for other types of cross-connections, if necessary.

18. Activate the bank by selecting the Activate command from the Cross-connections | Banks menu and click OK.

19. Choose the View command on the Alarms menu to check alarms. If theAlarms window is already open, remember to refresh the view by right-clicking in the Alarms window and choosing Refresh from the pop-upmenu.

See the Modifying a bank section later in his chapter for information onhow to change cross-connection settings.

20. Close the views and the Cross-connection tool.

21. Exit UltraSite BTS Hub Manager.

BTS Manager opens up automatically if you have started the UltraSite HubManager from the BTS Manager.

Modifying a bank

You can start modifying already made settings in an inactive bank by double-clicking the particular connection in the cross-connection list view in the Cross-connection window or by selecting the connection and choosing the Modifycommand on the pop-up menu (which appears when you right-click the mouse).

If you have activated the bank, you need to copy the cross-connection informationto the inactive bank for modification as active banks cannot be modified. Thecopy command also is available in the pop-up menu.

2.3.2 Commissioning based on an offline node file

You can also commission the BTS transmission and its Hub node by creating afile and sending it to the node during the commissioning procedure with theNokia UltraSite BTS Hub Commissioning Wizard. This allows more networksetup to be done off site. The file is usually provided by network planning.

2.3.2.1 To create a node offline file

In this chapter is briefly told what steps have to be accomplished in order to createa node file for the commissioning wizard. Note that the detailed instructions ofmanual commissioning apply for all settings in this section other than radiosettings. Detailed instructions on how to create radio settings for a node file aredescribed in section 2.3.2.2.

To access the node in file mode

1. Choose Nokia UltraSite BTS Hub Manager on the Nokia Applicationssubmenu on the Start | Programs menu in Windows.

2. Select File | New in UltraSite BTS Hub Manager.

3. Install the desired FXC units and radios in Equipment View.

4. Perform the necessary settings to the units and the node. Refer to section2.3.1 (except for the radio settings).

5. Save the node offline file with File | Save as... command.

2.3.2.2 Obligatory radio settings for the node offline file

Familiarise yourself with the Nokia FlexiHopper Radio User Manual, beforesetting FlexiHopper settings for the node offline file.

To set the obligatory settings for FlexiHopper:

1. Click the appropriate FXC RRI unit in the Equipment View window. Aunit-specific menu appears.

2. Select the Settings | Outdoor Unit command on the FXC RRI menucorresponding to the MetroHopper radio. The Settings dialog box appears.See Figure 34.

3. Set the TX frequency. Use the TX frequency provided by networkplanning.

4. Set the maximum TX Power. This value is also provided by networkplanning. The value is dependent on the frequency band. For example, fora 38 GHz frequency band radio, the maximum allowed value is 16 dBm.For more information refer to Nokia FlexiHopper Microwave Radio UserManual, Product Description.

5. Set the TX power ON.

6. Set the ALCQ (Adaptive Level Control with Quality measure) OFF. Ifneeded, the ALCQ can be switched on after the hop is commissioned andthe fine-alignment of the antenna is performed. The RX input level,determined by the transmission planning, must also be correct.

7. For the ALCQ to function, you must set the Fading Margin value (dB).This value can be calculated by transmission planning. For moreinformation refer to Nokia FlexiHopper Microwave Radio User Manual’sProduct Description document.

8. Set Interleave Status, if needed. Possible values for the interleave status areOff, Depth 2 and Depth 4. The status must be the same at both ends of thehop. For more information refer to Nokia FlexiHopper Microwave RadioUser Manual’s Product Description document.

9. Click the OK button.

Familiarise yourself with the Nokia MetroHopper Radio User Manual, beforesetting MetroHopper settings for the node offline file.

To set the obligatory settings for MetroHopper:

1. Click the appropriate FXC RRI unit in the Equipment View window. Aunit-specific menu appears.

2. Select the Settings | Outdoor Unit command on the FXC RRI menucorresponding to the MetroHopper radio. The Settings dialog box appears.See Figure 35.

4. Set the Hop Mode. One end of the hop must be set as the master and theother end as the slave.

5. Set the Temporary Hop ID. This value must be the same for both themaster and the slave.

6. Use the Select all button to select all channels in the Automatic ChannelSelection.

7. Click the Apply button.

8. Click the RF Settings page to view the RF page again.

9. Set the Interleave Status, if needed. The status must be the same at bothends of the hop.

10. Set the Forced Synchronising Master, if needed. This check box is onlyenabled, if you set the Hop Mode as the master in step 4.

11. Click the OK button.

2.3.2.3 Commissioning process based on an offline node file

To commission the UltraSite BTS Hub node with the commissioningwizard:

1. Choose Nokia UltraSite BTS Manager on the Nokia Applicationssubmenu on the Start | Programs menu in Windows.

Wait until the BTS Manager has properly started and only then move on tothe next step.

2. Start Nokia UltraSite BTS Hub Manager from the BTS Manager’s Toolsmenu.

The equipment view opens automatically when the connection has beenestablished (see Figure 18).

If the connection fails, check the connection speed and LMP cableconnection from Tools | Options | Manager options. You can also try theConnection | Connect... command and enter the connection parameters inthe Connect to Node dialog box. Using the Nokia Connection Tool, referto the application’s online Help.

The units must not contain modified settings (such as cross-connections) whenrunning the commissioning wizard.

Nokia delivers all units with factory settings. If you have alreadyconfigured the units, you need to restore the factory settings. Select Maintenance| Reset | Factory settings. Repeat for all individual FXC units. After that you canrun the commissioning wizard.

3. Choose Configuration | Commissioning Wizard from the menu bar.

4. Run all UltraSite BTS Hub tests.

5. Check the results of the tests from the Testing box and fill in the requiredfields.

6. Click Next to open the Site Selection dialog box.

7. Browse the node offline file and select a site from the site list displayed.

8. Click Next to open the Accept Site Selection dialog box. Verify that theselected site is the correct one.

9. Click Next to accept the selected node offline file and the site, and to sendnode settings to the node. The End dialog will appear if no FXC RRI unitsare used.

The program then performs the node configuration.

10. This step is optional. Check and fine-tune radio hops, if radios are includedin the configuration. Click Next when the required hop statuses are OK.The End dialog will appear.

11. Check the Commissioning Report, give the file a name and store it on thedisk by clicking the Finish button.

2.3.2.4 Testing with the commissioning wizard

Once the commissioning wizard has been opened by choosing Configuration |Commissioning Wizard, the Welcome dialog box appears, showing the tests tobe run, see Figure 37

The testing phase contains activities which ensure that the hardware isfunctioning properly. In this phase all feasible tests are run in the UltraHub nodeand also in the transmission units found in the node.

You do not need to perform any other actions than start the testing process. Alltests are run as default. Although you can select which test to run, site acceptancerequires that all tests are completed successfully.

The only test run at this phase is: cross-connection test.

After the tests have been selected, the Manager program executes them, and theresults are shown in the Testing dialog box, see Figure 38.

The running of the tests will take less than three minutes.

The test results are gathered in the commissioning report. See the next section formore information about the commissioning report.

2.3.2.5 Configuring with the commissioning wizard

The configuration phase contains activities needed to make the node functioningin the network. These activities include the node ID, Q1 and synchronisationsettings for the node, unit-specific settings for the transmission units, radioparameters, and cross-connection.

Configuring the site

After the testing phase, the commissioning wizard continues with siteconfiguration.

The Site Selection dialog box opens, see Figure 39. In this dialog box you canbrowse the node offline file.

The Browse button opens a standard Open dialog where you can look for the file.

The Next button is disabled until a valid file is selected.

By clicking the Next button, you accept the selected file. The Manager comparesthe file equipment configuration against the node configuration. If there aredifferences, you are notified about them with the following message: “Fix theconfiguration and restart the commissioning process.”

After the configuration is correct, all the settings are sent to the node and units.The UltraSite BTS Hub Manager takes care of the node level settings and theintegrated FXC unit managers take care of the FXC unit related settings andpossible outdoor unit settings.

Check hops

In the following dialog box, Check Hops, (see Figure 41) you can monitorpossible radio hops and fine-tune them. Only FXC RRI units are enabled. TheUltraSite BTS Hub Manager polls each unit, and updates the status of the radiooutdoor units to the dialog box.

Click Next and the polling ends. The End dialog box opens. You can view acommissioning report there, see Figure 42.

Commissioning report

A commissioning report is gathered containing the test results and the nodeconfiguring information (node settings, the settings of each unit, cross-connections). The report is shown to the user. This report is then protected andstored into a file which can be used, for example, for site acceptance.

After the first end of the hop is commissioned, the hop status in the Check Hopsdialog box and in the commissioning report is shown as Not ready or Trying, nofar-end found until the first end of the hop is commissioned.

A complete commissioning report can be obtained after the far-end of the hop hasbeen commissioned.

2.4 Manual BTS commissioning

The BTS commissioning is done with BTS Commissioning Wizard. It is assumedhere that the LAPD links and the PCM port are activated at the BSC. The BCF isstill in ‘Locked’ state.

Manual commissioning can be done only with a non-commissioned BTS. If theBTS to be commissioned is already commissioned, you need to first run the UndoCommissioning procedure in BTS Commissioning Wizard.

BTS SW is loaded to the BTS by the manufacturer. There is usually no need tolocally load SW to the BTS during commissioning.

Start manual BTS commissioning as follows:

1. Choose Nokia BTS Manager from the Nokia Applications submenu onthe Start | Programs menu in Windows.

2. Choose Wizard on the Commissioning menu.

If any transmission card other than an FC E1/T1 is used, then the LIF andSynchronization buttons will not appear in the Set Transmission Parameterswindow.

If there is a FC E1/T1 transmission unit in the BTS configuration, click LIFSettings to define line interfaces (see Section 2.4.1) and then clickSynchronization to define synchronization settings (see Section 2.4.2) forthe FC E1/T1 transmission unit.

When you have finished, click Next to continue.

5. Click the Start Commissioning button to send the commissioningparameters to the BTS (see Figure 45).

If there is an FC E1/T1 transmission unit in the configuration, the appearance ofthis Wizard page is different. Click the Traffic Manager button to allocatetransmission capacity. See Section 2.3.1.5 for information on allocatingtransmission capacity with Traffic Manager. This will establish a transmissionconnection between the BTS and the BSC. (If the connection fails, refer toChapter 4.) When you click OK in Traffic Manager, the TransmissionConfiguration page reappears. The Back button is disabled, because thetransmission parameters have already been sent to the BTS. If you need to changeany parameters you have specified prior to this point, you have to run the UndoCommissioning procedure first and then re-commission the BTS.

During the BTS/BSC start-up scenario the BSC checks the BTS SW and ifit is not the correct one, the BSC loads SW to the BTS. This downloadingwill take from 5 to 20 minutes depending on the link speed, and the BCF isreset automatically, which means that the Supervision and Alarmswindows disappear for a few seconds, but the commissioning procedurecontinues after the BTS has started normally. If no SW downloading takesplace, the process will take about 10 seconds. After that the BSC sends theconfiguration data to the BTS.

If the oven oscillator has not yet warmed up, the BCF remains in the'Configuring' state. It can take a few minutes for the oven oscillator towarm up after the BTS is powered on. The BTS Events list displays amessage when the oven oscillator is ready.

When the BTS is ready for testing, the Wizard automatically proceeds tothe next page and the BSC runs automatic tests on the Abis link and on eachTRX installed in the BTS.

If there is no BSC connection (the BCF remains in the ‘Waiting for LAPD’) stateand you click Next, the Wizard asks if you want to give the Use Currentcommand. If you click Yes, the BTS starts to use the BTS SW in the BOI unitmemory and the Wizard proceeds to the BTS Test Reporting page. If you clickNo, the BCF remains in the ‘Waiting for LAPD’ state, until the BSC connection(OMUSIG link) is established.

6. When the BTS Test Reporting page appears, there is a slight delay beforethe automatic BSC-controlled tests start (see Figure 46). If you click theManual button to open the TRX Test dialog box and the BSC-controlledtests start, the dialog box closes automatically.

When the BCF is in the ‘Configuring’ state and the TRXs are ready fortesting, the BTS tests are run under the BSC’s control. The BSC runsautomatic tests on the Abis link and on each TRX installed in the BTS.

The TRX test takes about 6 - 7 seconds for one TRX (one radio time slotper TRX is tested), while the Abis loop test takes about 30 seconds perTRX.

When the BSC-controlled tests are over, you can click Manual to runmanual TRX tests.

If the establishment of the BTS/BSC connection did not succeed and you gave theUse Current command in the previous step, you can click the Manual button torun local TRX tests.

In order not to interfere the operation of other sites, make sure that an RFattenuator is connected to every TRX in the BTS before you start local TRX tests.

The following is an explanation of TRX test results (see Figure 46):

• TX power level should be 47 dBm, +/- 4 dBm, otherwise the testfails.

• The TRX sensitivity value in laboratory conditions is typically from-109 dBm to -111 dBm. In field conditions with interference, an acceptablevalue can be around -100 dBm.

• BER in RF part should not be bigger than 2%, otherwise the testfails. BER in BB part should not exceed 0%, otherwise the test fails.

If the EAC inputs will not be used, click Next twice in succession.

7. Check EAC inputs 1- 12 if they will be used. Mark the required EACs as‘In Use’ (see Figure 47).

The state of each EAC will change in real time as you test them, e.g. whenyou blow some smoke on the smoke detector. Then, the appropriate statechanges from ‘Open’ to ‘Closed’, or vice versa.

After testing the EACs, mark them ‘Checked’. When you have completedthe testing (or checking), click Next.

The Next button remains disabled until you click a checkmark in the Checked boxfor all inputs that are ‘In Use’.

8. Check EAC inputs 13 - 24 like inputs 1 - 12. When you have completed thetesting (or checking) or if these EAC inputs will not be used, click Next.

If the EAC outputs will not be used, click Next.

EAC inputs and outputs dialog boxes are only for testing the lines. Re-commissioning is not needed if new EAC lines are added later. EAC lines aredefined at the BSC, which activates the lines into use.

11. Click Finish to save the report.

12. Choose the Exit command on the File menu to quit BTS Manager.

13. Disconnect your laptop PC from the BTS’s LMP port.

The commissioning parameters are stored in the BOIA memory.

To start the BTS, it must be unlocked at the BSC.

2.4.1 LIF settings for FC E1/T1 transmission unit

Define FC E1/T1 LIF settings as follows:

1. Click the LIF Settings button in the Set Transmission Parameters dialogbox. The LIF Settings dialog box appears (see Figure 50).

2. Select the Interface in Use option.

3. Select the interface mode from the list. If you select ‘T1 100 ohm’,additional settings appear in the dialog box. See step 5.

4. Select the CRC in Use option the way it is defined at the BSC.

5. If you selected the ‘T1 100 ohm’ interface mode, you need to define theTS0 fixed bits. TS0 fixed bits from 1 to 3 are reserved for CRC and framelocking. Bits from 4 to 8 are used for alarms and data transfer in nationalconnections.

6. Click OK to accept the changes.

Perform the BOI clock tuning procedure as follows:

1. Connect the frequency counter to the 13 MHz test connector on the BOIfront panel using an appropriate test cable.

2. Check the current and permanent DAC value with the BTS Manager.

3. Adjust the trigger level on the counter to produce a frequency reading. Fordetails, see the handbook of the manufacturer.

4. Set the measuring period to one second for the first adjustment.

5. Adjust the displayed frequency to 13 000 000.0 Hz by adjusting the currentDAC value with the BTS Manager (use “Set as current” button). Whenadjustments are complete, save the DAC value as the permanent DACvalue with the BTS Manager (use “Save Current Permanently” button).

When searching for the 13 000 000.0 Hz frequency, it is useful to know that 40.8DAC steps equals 1 (one) Hz.

6. Adjust the maximum measuring period to achieve the required samplingaccuracy.

7. Re-check the displayed frequency. If necessary, readjust the frequency to13 000 000.0 Hz with the BTS Manager (see steps 4 and 5 above). Save theDAC value permanently, if it is changed.

3 Commissioning reportsAfter HW configuration and both transmission and BTS commissioning, thecommissioning reports are saved in a file on the laptop PC hard disk.

The reports are ASCII text files that you can open and check with Notepad or anyother word processor. The reports serve as the Site Acceptance document.

3.1 Report contents

The reports consist of sections with information about the different phases of thecommissioning.

There is no separate transmission configuration report, if there are no FXCtransmission units in the BTS configuration. In this case the FC E1/T1transmission unit is configured during the BTS commissioning.

4 Troubleshooting and fault reportingIn the case of a failure in any part of the whole commissioning procedure, analarm will appear in the alarm window (refer to the BTS Alarm Descriptionsdocument in the SW release binder). Also, you may check the cause of a failurefrom the commissioning reports.

The commissioning procedure may fail, e.g. when:

• the RX and TX cables are not properly connected, then the TRX test fails.

• the Abis cables are not properly connected (then the transmission unit LEDis not green)

• the pre-configuration failed at the BSC, e.g. the BCF and TRX objects werenot created

• the oven oscillator has not yet warmed up (then the BCF remains in the‘Configuring’ state)

• the TRXs are not unlocked at the BSC (then the TRXs do not enter the‘Supervisory’ state)

• the PCM port is not activated at the BSC.

Abis loop test measures bit transfer errors between the BTS and the BSC. If theBER value is bigger than normal that might indicate trouble between the BSC andthe BTS.

Before starting to re-commission the BTS, first run the Undo Commissioningprocedure in BTS Commissioning Wizard.

All damages, failures or faults must be reported to Nokia using the Failure ReportForm provided by your local Nokia representative.
