With the Nokia Flexi EDGE Base Station, operators have an innovative way to build networks, add GSM capacity and coverage, or modernize their existing GSM network. Whether working in new growth or mature markets, operators can enjoy substantially reduced roll out costs and rapid time to market, coupled with the flexibility to expand capacity limitlessly to match their growing needs.

Built from compact weather-proof modules, Nokia Flexi EDGE Base Station eliminates the need for bulky, space-consuming cabinets, opening up a wealth of new site types to provide coverage in dense areas. Modules can be stacked on the floor or a shelf, they can be fixed on walls or poles, and they are small enough to be installed in completely new locations such as bus stops, kiosk roofs and small indoor closets.

The all-purpose base station Nokia Flexi EDGE Base Station is highly adaptable. The same modules can be used to build either macrocellular or microcellular coverage. Small or large configurations are also possible, from a 1 TRX configuration right up to 216 TRX, indoors or outdoors.

This enables operators to use Nokia Flexi EDGE Base Station to meet all applications and coverage needs, whether building wide area coverage for rural areas or microcellular sites to provide capacity for hot spots or urban areas.

Flexible capacity in the smallest sizeNokia Flexi EDGE Base Station can be configured with between one and 216 TRX, providing smooth capacity growth that matches demand precisely.

By using compact modules, Nokia Flexi EDGE Base Station brings a new level of flexibility for building both outdoor and indoor sites. Furthermore, eliminating the need for a cabinet, which is often quite large, makes Nokia Flexi EDGE Base Station the market’s smallest GSM macro base station for any capacity. With Nokia Flexi EDGE Base Station, you are not forced into using a 24 TRX cabinet when you only need a 6 TRX base station, for example.

The high level of integration enables a 24 TRX Nokia Flexi EDGE Base Station to fit into the same volume as a conventional 12 TRX cabinet. In addition, a 4+4+4 TRX configuration can be built with a module stack less than 1 meter high.

Fewer sites are neededAvailable in GSM 800, 900, 1800 and 1900 frequency bands, Nokia Flexi EDGE Base Station offers industry-leading radio performance. A balanced link featuring high transmit power and excellent receiver sensitivity helps to create a larger cell size for greater coverage.

There are several ways to boost the base station’s reach even further. Nokia Flexi EDGE TRX can be used in double power mode, while the base station supports Nokia Smart Radio Concept (SRC), together enabling output power of 200W. The uplink performance can be improved by using 4-way uplink diversity and mast head amplifiers.

The modular design and small size enables network planners to pinpoint better sites for each Nokia Flexi EDGE Base Station. The base station can be installed next to the antenna, avoiding the need for long feeder cables that attenuate the signal. Nokia also supports operators with planning services to achieve optimum placement of base stations during network planning.

With these measures, the number of sites needed can be reduced by up to 50%, helping to speed up roll out and bringing down radio network costs even further.

Low site costs, indoors or outdoorsWith Nokia Flexi EDGE Base Station, site acquisition is simplified by the wider choice of possible locations, while the civil works needed to prepare a site is much reduced.

The base station modules are small and light enough to be carried and installed by a single person. No special lifting equipment is needed, outdoor shelters are unnecessary, there is no need for costly air conditioning for indoor or outdoor installations and base station commissioning requires no special skills.

The base station’s modular design and small size opens up entirely new sites that can be exploited. This substantially increases the chances of finding the optimum location for the base station site. What’s more, rentals of these new types of sites are typically lower than conventional sites.

With the market’s lowest footprint-to-capacity ratio, Nokia Flexi EDGE Base Station also uses existing site space more efficiently. Modules can be stacked on the floor, mounted on walls or fitted within existing cabinets, re-using existing transmission capability and power supply back up investments.

Using one platform also helps to reduce costs, as maintenance and deployment engineers need to be trained in one base station type only.
