Objectives

• To increase the child’s skills and confidence in those developmental areas identified as a priority by the child’s parents and therapists;

• To increase the capacity of parents to address their child’s developmental needs;

• To contribute to the child’s readiness for, and transition to, school or other educational setting (eg. 3 year old kindy or child care);

• To provide therapy support for children on waiting lists or unable to access services; and

• To link the child and their family into other community support services.

Strategies

• Parent education sessions (eg: on language development, challenging behaviour);

• Involvement of child’s therapists, who can model therapy techniques specific to the child;

• Offering play activities which help parents and children practise new skills; and

• Provide social supports for families, linking parents with each other and into community services.
