Happy New Year
To my dear friends, may we have a Happy New Year, a year of serenity, in
which the peace process moves ahead bringing us the much needed peace to
the people of our tiny strip of land, the land thats our home.
This year our organization No2Violence against Women is gathering its strength
and starting the building of two shelters in Herzlia and Hadera. There are also
plans being laid for building a shelter in Rishon LeZion. This is a huge
undertaking that includes meetings with architects, finding a project manager,
working with professional teams, drawing up contracts and checking them,
making changes and adapting them to the satisfaction of both sides, meeting
with the municipal engineers, careful thinking and planning with the shelter
managers to ensure we meet all of the needs and requirements of the new
shelters. We have to deal with the neighbors and their objections (in Herzlia this
took over six years), including requests to the various municipal and other
authorities, the courts and even the Supreme Court!
However, the most critical mission that each and every one of you can help us
with is collecting the necessary human and financial resources that will enable
us to build nice, modest, respectable buildings with minimal furnishings that willprovide a home for women and children in their hour of need.
All the people of Israel are responsible for each other. We know our
responsibility and enable every woman to enter our shelter provided there is a
bed available. We accept J ewish women, religious and secular, native Israelis
and new immigrants, Arab, Christian, Moslem and Druze women, as well as
women with no status at all.
Together we will talk, tell our families and friends, amass more and more
strength and energy to build these new homes and get rid of domestic violence
to the point where this terrible, painful phenomenon no longer exists in our
world.

Knesset Members Visit Us
The first visitors from the new Knesset (the 19th) were Michal Rozin and Shuly
Mualem, two Knesset members from different parties, who were very interested
in and identified with the goals of our organization. They will continue with their
activities which can help us.
For many years, Michal Rozin served as the managing director of the

with security issues, but is also aware and sensitive to important social issues.
He promised to continue to promote these issues that are so important to us like
he helped women to advance in the IDF.
A letter to the Minister of Welfare
Dear Mr. Meir Cohen, Minister of Welfare,
First, its important for me to tell you that it was a pleasure for me to see you in
action about a month ago at the meeting regarding foreign workers that was
chaired by my friend, Knesset Member Michal Rozin.
I was very happy to hear that you are interested in being a frontrunner in dealing
with what is, in my opinion, one of the most pressing and painful issues in ourcountry today.
In addition, I received your answer to our invitation, stating that due to your
demanding schedule we should contact your aides: Advocate Inbar Yechezkeli
Balilios, who Ive met in the past and Mr. Albert Yosef Advisor on NPOs. Ill be
happy to contact them and invite them to our organization for a visit and meeting.
Of course, if your schedule permits, it would be our pleasure to host you as well.
It is imperative for me to explain that at the meeting where we met, I told you that
there arent enough places available in the shelters today - there are many more
requests than spaces - contrary to the statement made by Michal Chanoch
Achdut claiming that every woman in Israel seeking shelter has a place.
The Tel Aviv shelter that you visited is being renovated and has been undergoing
renovations over the last three years. Therefore, the shelter only accepts women
with children under the age of five, which explains the reason there are available
beds there. If you visit us and look at our call register, you will see that there are
almost never available beds and that the number of requests is generally double
the number of available beds.
We are extremely familiar with this topic and the methods of dealing with it
around the world. We know the myths and the realities, the ideology and the
results in the field. This is knowledge gleaned from the daily hands-on experience
that we have had in the field over the years. For us, these are names and faces,

not statistics to be analyzed. Please take advantage of our knowledge,
experience and expertise.
The ongoing power struggle between the NPOs and the Ministry of Welfare
definitely hurts women and children and as a result, harms our society as a
whole.
Im inviting you to be part of the generation that moves from words to actions
from a useless power struggle, to committed activities that will bring about a true
and lasting change for the better.
Id like to take this opportunity to wish you on behalf of our team and myself, the
best of luck in your position as minister.
Sincerely yours,
Daniela Kehat
Were busy in the Rishon LeZion shelter
In J uly in our shelter we held the Aviv self-defense workshop, which is run by the Israel police
department and sponsored by the Association for the Advancement of Women in the Prime Ministers
Office by Vered Shwed. The workshop was headed by Advanced Staff Sargeant Major Chaim
Chaknai. The closing ceremony was held at the Rishon LeZion police department. Watch Ruth Rasnicspeaking at the ceremony.
The Rishon police department also hosted us at the end of August with a fun day for mothers and
children from the shelter. Once a week, throughout the summer, the women and children were guests
of the municipal country club for a fun day.
During this past year I lectured to medical students from Tel Aviv University and had a series of
meetings with social workers and nurses from Assaf HaRofe hospital, social work students at the
Rishon municipality and nursing students at the Kaplan Hospital.
At the shelter there are volunteer activities: self defense, art classes for children, animal classes,
laughing workshops, paper mache classes, music activities, storytelling and plays, cooking, zumba
and a baking workshop.
In the beginning of March a team of paratroopers and engineers from the Bern Company painted,
planted and beautified our childrens playground and our shelter. Wed like to thank all those who did
such a wonderful job!
Happy Healthy New Year,

Moving to Our Temporary Home
About a month ago the Hadera shelter moved to its temporary facility where we will stay for the next two years.
During this time, the new shelter which we dreamed of for so long will be built. We can already accommodatemore women and children in better living conditions in our temporary shelter. After long days of hard work
surrounding the move, we got a gift from the organization management, a pampering spa day.
Now we are busy with the summer vacation, trips and fun activities to make the childrens time in the shelter
more enjoyable. During the move we updated our followers on Facebook and we have pictures and videos of all
of our activities on our site. We are filming and taking pictures of all of our activities to make our shelter a more
accessible and inviting place.
Best wishes,
Dalit Ashuri
Shelter Manager, Hadera

A Busy Year in the Herzl ia Shelter
In our shelter, over the past year, the women have participated in a number of empowering workshops including
krav maga and a communication workshop to improve the interpersonal connection they have with their children
and enrich their connection. They learned all about speech development and storytelling for young children.
One of the children who was enjoying the book My Thank You Book, which was donated by the author Michal
Boker, opened the book to the line, Thank you to the sun that rises today, and everyday, big, yellow and full.
Here he added his interpretation to the rest of the page,
Mommy says that the shelter is like the sun and the light that it shines can renew life. That says it all!And on more practical matters, the women participated in a DIY workshop to learn that they can do anything.
Rona, the owner of a renovation company, generously gave the short and focused course to teach about
building and renovation. The women did their practice work on our transition building. The experience we can
do anything was amazing as were the results of their work.
We are at the height of the summer vacation, with lots of children of all ages, spending time together with our
staff at our wonderful shelter summer camp. We play with animals, wade in pools, bake cakes and have an art
competition. And mostly we have lots of laughs and fun.
We waded in the Shofet Creek with the women and children and also participated in a wine workshop where we
learned about wine and then made non-alcoholic wine together. This was sponsored by the Latem Company.
We had a fun day at the pools and mineral water pools with a picnic and a wonderful time, courtesy of Kibbutz
Gaash. And we also had fun in the pool at Kibbutz Glil Yam.

Its very heartwarming, to see the excitement and enthusiasm of the children. For some of them, this is the firsttime theyve experienced such carefree fun and entertainment, which is the regular enjoyment for most children
in the summer. This is thanks to the kind and generous people who enable these children to enjoy a summer
without the shadow of violence over their heads.
At the same time, we are getting the children ready for school. We are registering them in kindergartens and
schools and getting them school bags and the necessary supplies.
Happy New Year,

Self -Defense Course Given by Israel's Police Department and
Association for the Advancement of Women
Chaim Chaknai has trained all of the police in Israel. So you can imagine our surprise when he showed
up at one of our shelters and managed to get the women and several staff members on their feet and
learning how to fight off a violent attack. The women learned a lot and enjoyed the course.
Their only complaint was that the course ended too fast! In five meetings Chaim magically encouraged
the women and got them to hold their heads high. The pictures speak for themselves and our
relationship with the police has improved. A big thank you to the police department and to the
Association for the Advancement of Women!
Watch Ruth Rasnic speaking at the closing ceremony at the Rishon police department.
