What is a

BIOME?

A large geographic

area that is

categorized by its

climate, flora (plants),

and fauna (animals).

What are the

characteristics of

the littoral zone of

a lake?

It is the area close

to the shoreline.

Sunlight can reach

the bottom, so there

are many plants and

animals living

there.

You are standing in water up to your knees. There are many plants but no trees around.

Looking ahead you can see the edge of a pond or

lake. Where are you?

In a marsh.

Explain how

succession happens

in a lake.

Over time the lake can fill with sediment. Plants begin to grow

as light can now reach the bottom. As the plants continue to flourish, more debris builds up on

the bottom. The decay of this material uses up available oxygen

and that changes what can live there. If enough sediment builds up...a forest will start to develop.

What is the difference between a

swamp and a marsh?

There are trees growing in a

swamp; a marsh is devoid of

trees.

Which biome is known

for having the greatest

biodiversity?

Tropical Rainforests.

What types of

adaptations would you

expect desert plants to

have?

-Waxy leaves to keep

water from evaporating.

-Spines to help radiate heat

and deter grazers.

hot?

Nope!

rain/year.

But…some deserts are cold (like

the Gobi and Great Basin…and

ice cream…oh…wait…that’s

dessert).

Describe the climate of the

coniferous forest (aka taiga or

boreal forest).

-Not very much rain (avg. 14-

Basically: Cool summers and cold

winters.

What would a taiga look like in the

winter?

It would be orange with black

stripes and it would be

What is an estuary?

An area wherein freshwater

combines with saltwater

(brackish). This creates a unique

ecosystem because of the water’s

low-level salinity.

What are the conditions in the

intertidal zone to which organisms

must be adapted?

-Being underwater at times and

exposed to the air at others.

-Drastic temperature changes.

-Exposure to heavy wave action.

-Changes in salinity.

In this ecosystem, many of the

Tropical grasslands-(like the African Savanna)

-Relatively warm-hot all year.

-Up to 50” of rain.

-Rainy and dry seasons

-Very few trees that are found in small clusters

where the are present

Temperate grasslands-(such as the US prairies)

-Have harsh winters. -10-30” of precipitation, some of it is snow.

-very few trees, occasional fires.

expect to learn if you observed

the various species of flora and

There is a high probability that

you would observe many

plants and animals with

similar adaptations due to the

fact that they have to survive

in similar environments.
