Comparison between two studies

DISTANCE EDUCATION COURSE

NO SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCES

PHENOMENON

Study one (1)

Name of study : Assessing academic performance between traditional and distance education course formats.

Author: Mark G. Urtel

Objectives: The goal of this study was to explore whether differences in student academic indicators exist between taking a course face-to-face (F2F) and taking a course via distance education (DE).

Study one (1)

Target audience: undergraduate students at a local mid-western urban university male and female.

Assessment tool: final grade reports, electronic or hard copy grade books, and the absolute reporting rates of semester-end student course evaluations.

Resources: http://www.ifets.info/journals/11_1/23.pdf

Page 4: No significant deffirent

There was a statistically significant difference between the distance education and face-to-face groups regarding overall academic performance as measured by grade earned (p = .010). The students enrolled in the face to facesection earned, overall, a 3.16/4.00 and the students who took the distance education section earned a 2.28/4.00.

Evidence of significant difference

Study two (2)

Name of study :Student Achievement in Online Distance Education Compared to Face-to-Face Education

Author: Namsook Jahng, PhD & Don Krug, Associate Professor & Zuochen Zhang, PhD.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate how the development of technology contributed to student achievement in ODE within the last ten years

Study two (2)

Target audience: There is no target audience because this is a comparison study.

Assessment tools: there is no assessment tool but they used specific way that called meta analysis.

Resources:http://www.eurodl.org/materials/contrib/2007/Jahng_Krug_Zhang.htm

Page 7: No significant deffirent

The result of this study indicated no significant difference in student achievement between ODE and F2FE (d = +0.023, k = 20). The result of non-significance was different when the studies were grouped according to Yes- or No-pre-test.

Evidence of no significant difference:

Our Point of View”

There is no significant differences between F2F and DE . That means in both of these strategies we achieve the outcomes but with different levels. Both of them are effective because the student will achieve the same score and grade but maybe one of them will be more efficient than other and this depends on the learner style and preferences.

For me it’s really a good news because even we didn’t have the advanced technology and communication tools we can learn with any worry because we believe that technology isn’t the basic factor affect in our achievement and performance.
